We asked for to-go containers & the server even helped my wife put her pho into the container & wrapped it for her. I'd like to note that the closing time is wrong here. We called to double check and it actually closes 9:30PM on Thursdays. Not a big difference but that's a plus for late eaters like me. The restaurant itself is clean and spacious with ample seating so it's good for large parties/families and there's no need to worry about long wait times. We were seated right away. We ordered: - Cha Gio (Vietnamese egg rolls) 2pc for $3.50 - Pho Tai (Noodle soup with eye round steak) $8.99 for a small - Com Bo Luc Lac (Rice with marinated beef chunks) $11 - Che 3 Mau (Three color dessert bean pudding) $4 The food itself is GREAT. The egg rolls are fried on order so they come out hot and fresh. Pro Tip: Let it sit for a few minutes or you WILL burn your mouth. A small pho was more than enough for me and they give a generous portion of meat. The broth itself is rich and flavorful and it's hard to resist drinking every last spoonful. My second stomach came through for the dessert - I REALLY enjoyed it. Jelly, mashed mung beans, and sweetened coconut cream underneath a bed of shaved ice is an unexpectedly delicious combination. Don't worry, I didn't forget about the rice. Beef steak cubes and onions is always good but coming from New York, I was really surprised at the cost. I came here during lunch time with a group of about 15 on a Sunday. We were seated right away. The service was fast and we got our drinks right away. We placed our order and the food came out in less than 15 minutes. I ordered the small #5 combination pho and split an order of shrimp rolls and egg rolls with 2 other people. The amount of food was perfect for me. The broth was flavorful and meaty. The balance of meat and noodles was great. It was the perfect meal for a cold day. This is one, if not my only, favorite Vietnamese restaurant. I found this gem nestled between a laundromat and goodwill about 3 years ago when I moved to the area. I've tried a ton of Vietnamese restaurants and they were good don't get me wrong but once I tried Pho Dai Loi 3 it was settled, I've found my favorite convenient restaurant for my Vietnamese cravings. Growing up I've had plenty of home cooked Vietnamese dishes so it's hard to find restaurants that can give me the same satisfaction that comes when my mom makes it for me. The pho here is amazing. The broth is deep and rich in flavor and they give you so much meat! It's a steal with the prices they charge! I've ordered something off of every section of the menu and I've never been disappointed. The meat is tender and never over cooked, the spring rolls are fresh and the smoothies are delicious. My favorite is the durian smoothie with tapioca. And if you love coffee you must try the Vietnamese iced coffee with sweet condensed milk, but be warned it is extremely strong. For my fiance and I to have a meal there it's no more than $20 and trust me it's filling. Other than the amazing food the service is great. The waiters are patient and are more than willing to answer any questions or make substitutions to your meal. And they are very fast. We are usually in and out in 30-45 minutes even during their busiest hours. I finally broke down & lost my pho-ginity today at Pho Dai Lai. I must say I made a good choice for my first time. Btw, don't mind some of my internal dialogue sprinkled throughout the review! The restaurants' exterior is almost missable from the road & blends into its shopping center surroundings. Inside, it's clean and bright, but has very little atmosphere. It has more of a spartan vibe, which is fine. The tables reminded me of cafeteria tables. They were outfitted with a display of condiments (duck sauce, Sriracha, Hoison, fish sauce, and an unidentifiable sauce). I was escorted to a table & immediately asked for my drink order. It showed up in just 2 seconds. Then I was asked if I was ready to order. I hadn't even opened the menu! I'd never seen a menu like this - it was going to take a min. to navigate. I politely said I needed more time. A whopping 40 seconds later, I was approached by another staffer asking to take my order. What the French toast?! Aggg, the pressure! I again requested MORE time. It was only 12:30pm - wth, was the kitchen closing early?! Finally, a third person came by just mere seconds later - I conceded & went along & ordered on their terms, aka "NOW!", even though I didn't know what I wanted! I must admit it was an angst-inducing experience that had me feeling pressured & frazzled. Thankfully, the server let me ask questions & more importantly, he asked what I like. When I said chicken & beef, I asked him which one would you get? He suggested I combine them - so I ordered a custom creation, not on the menu. How's that for a pho-gin?! I also ordered the Vietnamese egg rolls ($3.99). The egg rolls came out with impressive swiftness, along with a plate of beautiful, fresh accoutrements for the pho. The plate contained bean sprouts, a lime wedge, jalapeños, fresh mint, Basil & cilantro. If I were anywhere else I wouldn't know what to do with this - floss my teeth? Make a salad? Throw it away? Then my pho arrived seconds later in a large, piping hot bowl. Then I looked at the bowl with no silverware. More anxiety. How the hell do I eat this stuff?! Wait, that plate - does that have anything to do with it? Oh Lord, I hope they don't give me chopsticks - I suck with chopsticks! The herbs were moldy, bean sprouts soggy, shrimp tasted pasty, and the broth was water w a slight coloring. The shrimp spring rolls were extra cold and hard. Very disappointed today. If I hadnt hiked ten miles today and starving I don't think I would've finished. They are lucky I was hungry or I would've wasted food which is against my own values. Don't know what happened here. 2nd Chances List Visited: Wednesday 4/20/2016 THE SCENE Pho Dai Loi 3 was one of the places my very first adventure into this delicious Vietnamese noodle soup began. New flavors don't always click well with me. So, often times my first impression is either a 'love it' or 'hate it' deal. Unfortunately for this restaurant, the smooth floral richness of the broth that I love so much now, I hated back when I first sampled this soup. However, because I'd heard such great things about pho, I committed to trying it at three different restaurants to give it a fair chance. The second restaurant was a little better, but I was still not a fan. But on my third attempt, I struck gold and my love affair for pho became an obsession that lasted over a year! At one point I was eating pho 2 to 3 times a week and sometimes twice a day. The smell alone was enough to cause my mouth to water like Niagara Falls. I've had many food obsessions in the past, but nothing has ever quite taken a grip on me for so long and so unrelenting as pho. My cravings have finally subsided and now I can get back to living a normal life of all different types of foods... LOL! However, today I was having a relapse and thought it might be a good opportunity to go back and try the place I got my first experience. 200 bowls of pho later and I can finally give a more experienced to viewpoint rather than my early novice one. And the verdict? It was a definite improvement over my first experience and very enjoyable. FINAL THOUGHTS Ironically, my absolute favorite place for pho in Atlanta is Pho Dai Loi 2 (their sister store on Buford Highway) and current my 3rd favorite is the restaurant that started my obsession is Lotus Vietnamese, just a few miles down the road. While Pho Dai Loi 3 does indeed deserve a star upgrade, they fall a little short of being as good as their second location. Just when you can't imagine anymore Vietnamese restaurants popping up on Pleasant Hill, here comes Pho Dai Loi. This Pho Dai Loi is the 3rd location for the family that run this establishment. The restaurant is located right behind the Walgreens at the intersection of Pleasant Hill and Club Dr. This location is a more modernized and smaller version of the sister branch on Buford highway. Since the location used to be a Chinese restaurant, some of the Chinese decor is still left behind. Service is as good as you'll get at any Vietnamese establishments. As far as the food goes: it is just as good. The item on the menu is all the same. I arrived today shortly after 1pm and was surprised to see so many employees of the Buford location working here now. I ordered my usual; Bun Bo Hue. Spicy beef broth broth infused with lemongrass, served with various kind of meet and rice noodles. One of the thing that I love about Dai Loi is that they don't skimp out on the herbs. So many places these days failed to provide the necessary herbs to accompany your meals. Here, they give it to you, and plenty of it. This location is probably the least busy out of the chain, which is why I love coming here. I always get sat even before I can open the door all the way, and food comes out at lightning speed. I've never seen the place more than half way filled. I think most of their business come from take-out. Service is incredibly fast, but somehow food never fails to be incredible. I find it funny that sometimes they'll just stand their after handing over the menus...They're always more than willing to make tweaks in the dishes as well. I have a sensitivity to bean sprouts, and they're more than happy to wrap new spring rolls without them. The setting is simple and has a really homey feel. It sort of feels like coming for dinner at your aunt or grandma's house. The employees and owners are usually huddled around the check-out counter talking, eating, or cleaning something, which makes it easy to get their attention. I never mind their chatter since I don't understand Vietnamese at all besides a few words and phrases. I actually like the background noise. They also play vietnamese songs as a final touch to their ambience. My favorites are the bun bo hue, bo kho, pho dac biet, the marinated beef chunks, and any of the rice combo dishes. The spring rolls were so huge that I actually should have gotten just one order. I just moved to Duluth. I used to live really close to the Buford Hwy Dai Loi, which I eventually stopped going to because of the pigeons and service experience. But! I have been to Pho Dai Loi 2 on Buford Highway and now trying Pho Dai Loi 3 in Duluth on Pleasant Hill. As soon as my BFF and I entered the restaurant, we were shown to a table. We may be the second table that was there during the very cold evening. There were Vietnamese music playing in the background. Nice. The menu looked very much like the one at Buford Highway. A few minutes later, the waiter came with our drinks. I had asked for some very hot water on the side but he spoke little English. BFF repeated and said she would like some hot water. He understood it this time. We also ordered some Vietnamese hot coffee and waiter thought we wanted more hot water to dilute the strong coffee. That is not the reason why I needed hot water but that is fine if the hot water comes in. BFF had # 19 Pho Chin Nam, noodle soup with well done flank. The bowl of noodle soup came in three sizes, S, M and L and we both ordered the medium size. It had a generous portion of pho, flank meat, onions and parsley in it. There was also the fresh side vegetables of cilantro, bean sprouts, spicy jalapeno slices, basil leaves and cut up limes. BFF liked his pho and was happy with his selection. I had # 22 Pho Ga, noodle soup with chunky white chicken in a savory chicken broth. It was delicious but the soup came out lukewarm. I was looking for steaming hot soup and the lukewarm soup was a big let down to me after all the good reviews I read. Since the waiter spoke little English, I did not want him to reheat my bowl of pho in the microwave and my chicken slices to turn out tough. Someone, please teach me how to say in Vietnamese, " I want HOT pho". It was freezing outside and a hot bowl of pho would be so nice. However, I ate what I could and passed off the rest of my pho. As soon as I entered the establishment, I saw three employees standing there ready to seat me. My friends were already there so their readiness wasn't needed. Lol. The inside was a tad small. Parking was plentiful since this location was in a large strip full of businesses. Although I did not have food here, I'm sure the food was good. Pho Dai Loi's reputation hopefully follows them to this location. Everyone had a different menu item (buon, bun rue, pho), and everyone seemed like they enjoyed their food. Goodbye to 2011 and Happy New Year 2012! For the very first day of the year, a few friends and I decided to give Pho Dai Loi 3 a try since I love Pho Dai Loi 2 so much. As a bonus, it's so much closer to my house up in Buford (no, NOT Buford Highway). I used to go to another popular pho restaurant in Duluth whenever I wanted good pho and didn't want to drive all the way down to Buford Highway, but luckily I won't have to do that anymore! I ordered what I usually get at their other location - a small #12 (Rare Steak and Fatty Brisket) pho and spring rolls. The spring rolls were good, as usual, but I noticed that they put more basil leaves in the ones at this location vs. the Buford Highway location. And I love, love, LOVE their dipping sauce, which is (correct me if I'm wrong) Hoisin sauce mixed with peanut butter and sprinkled with chopped up bits of peanuts. I love the sauce so much that I usually have to ask for more to dip my meat from the pho. Although the pho here was almost as good as Buford Highway's, the soup wasn't exactly the same, delicious flavor that I have come to know and love there. By the way, they put cilantro in your soup, so my friend and I made sure to ask them for "no cilantro." (Forgot to ask for no onions, though, so I had to pick them all out. =P) The small size also seemed to contain less noodles and meat than Pho Dai Loi 2. The service here was great! Our server was very friendly and was also kind enough to give me their Wi-Fi password when I had asked if they offered it. YAY for free Wi-Fi! Overall, Duluth's very own Pho Dai Loi 3 deserves 4.5, but I will have to round down to 4. It's hard for me to explain why, but the pho is not QUITE as good at this location, and they gave me less pho in their small bowl. However, the menu and prices are about the same as Buford Highway's. As I walked in the smell of good food flooded my nostrils and I knew something good was brewing. The pho was overall very solid but I only had a few problems. The meat had an odd consistency and is a little thicker than usual. Besides this the broth was on point and filled with flavor and the noodles were noodles. The overall cleanliness of the place is subpar as the floor of the restroom is covered in piss-yellow stains. This place is ALWAYS awesome. The pho is amazing. They obviously don't use msg or too much msg like other places. Their portions are worth it and their service is superb! I've been here a few times within the past few days. I've had the bun (vermicelli salad bowl) with grilled shrimp, grilled pork, and eggroll. This was perfect for me as they didn't put any bean sprouts in it, which I normally don't like in this dish. The lettuce was sliced in small pieces and the pork was very tasty. Service was great as they were very attentive to any requests we made. On another note, I've also had the rice dish with lemon grass chicken, in which I added an egg on top. Umm... Was I eating chicken? The texture was quite off... Perhaps processed chicken with some fillers.. Not 100% chicken?? Eh, if it was good I might not have cared as much but it wasn't. No lemon grass flavor at all!! FAIL!!! I also had thai tea. It was overwhelmingly sweet.. I am pretty sure it was 85% mocha mix and 15% tea. Diabetes any one?? read more
