Pho District Cafe - Khao Soi Soup - Vietnamese Near Me - Los Angeles, California

So, I changed the spark plugs on my car today - first time doing that. If you haven't done it before, just watch a few YouTube videos, take your time, pay attention to details and it should all go well. It did for me. Anyway, that's not the point of this. The point is: while taking a quick test drive through the neighborhood after everything was buttoned up, my wife and I realized we were quite hungry. She had been down a rabbit hole on her own project an we had both forgotten to eat - you know how it is... As we were heading south on Eagle Rock Blvd, about to take a left on York to head back home, I suddenly remembered that there's a Pho place on that corner that we had been meaning to try. So we swung into the little parking lot and in we went. First off, the atmosphere is perfect for a small Vietnamese/Thai spot in a strip mall: clean and casual with cool murals on all the walls; pleasant house music playing in the background at a perfectly reasonable level. There is a bench along one wall, with 4-5 tables, and a section of about 5-6 tables on the other side of there room, next to the cash/counter. The tables are spaced well enough apart to not be cramped in any way, while not feeling sparse or empty - it's really well spatially balanced and I appreciate that. Lighting was bright enough without being glaring. We sat along the wall (me on the bench, my wife across from me) and a perfectly pleasant woman - not sure whether she was the owner of manager - came by with menus for us. A quick perusal revealed a moderate selection of Vietnamese and Thai mainstays - Pho, Ban Mi, Pad Thai etc. Not an overwhelming variety, but certainly many great options. We were straight up looking for pho, so it was an easy order: one Pho Tai, one Pho Ga. She took our order, brought us a couple of ice waters and was back within 10 minutes carrying two large bowls of pho. Large. Like, I didn't fully finish my broth large, and my wife took half of hers to go large. Love it. The bowls were served atop big plates loaded with plenty of the standard garnishes of Thai basil, bean sprouts, lime and jalapeño. It was all delicious and fresh. The broth was exactly what I had hoped for: hot and flavorful, with a rich clove-y aroma. It reminded me of the pho at one of my favorite Vietnamese restaurants back in Montreal..! Both bowls had plenty of light, thin, satisfying noodles - and they weren't all stuck together in a clump, as is sometimes the unfortunate case. I always mix a little dish of hoisin and sriracha, as I did this time, but the owner (?) also brought over a couple of little jars of homemade chili sauce. They were both quite spicy and flavorful - the paste was quite complex and the more saucy one was somewhat brighter. Try them! All and all this was a pretty perfect impromptu, casual drop in dining experience: easy, quick, delicious and friendly. With leftovers and a little extra chili paste! First to review this new Vietnamese/Thai restaurant on busy York Blvd and Eagle Rock Blvd. I think it's off to a great start. I went for takeout tonight. Exterior: so new that the sign's not up yet. It still very much bears the weatherbeaten sign of a the previous Thai restaurant at this location. Parking is really tight at this strip mall. Interior: red tables, simple chairs, nothing special. The place is still so new that I could hear drilling and hammering in the back. Phở Dặc Biệt: At almost $20 with tax, I would be cautious about spending this much but several things made it worth it. The portions were huge. The rare steak, brisket, and tripe were delicious. The meatballs were a bit bland. The broth was hot and very aromatic. Hard clove and anise notes. It could, in my opinion (and aware that not everyone else's), use a tad bit more saltiness. The broth came with mixed herbs already pre-diced into it. I would have appreciated some sprouts, cilantro, holy basil, and lime on the side though. I also got hoisin and (always- never the Sriracha) house spicy sauce on the side. Egg Rolls: Crisp with a good sweet fish sauce. Nothing special, and the egg rolls possibly not made in-house. Overall, I think they make a solid pho especially in terms of serving size. And while the broth could do with some tweaking and some additional accoutrement would be nice, I'd be happy to come by and have some more. Unfortunately it seems like this place isn't consistent. I ordered a Rare Steak Pho for pick up and when I came home realized that I hadn't been given the usual packet of sides (bean sprouts, cilantro, and limes). When I called to ask if my order should have included these sides, I wasn't offered any sort of partial refund. When I put together my ingredients (which are packaged separately for to-go orders, and which I still think is a thoughtful way to ensure that food stays fresh and at its best while you're transporting it home) I found that my meat was flavorless and dry and that my broth tasted like hot water. In addition, the first time I ordered take out I was impressed by the portions for the price, but this time I received lots of noodles and very little meat, which was disappointing for $19. I don't think I'll be back, since the quality of your foot seems to be a bit random. read more

Finally there's a good pho place in the area !!! Cute little restaurant that opened up recently, but the food was bomb. Normally I feel like I have to add so much lime etc at other pho places, but the broth here was really good! And portions are big! Tried this place for the first time tonight. I had the eggplant with chicken, medium spicy and it was tasty. Also, sampled the pad thai and it was great. A very strong peanut flavor and good toppings. I look forward to coming back and trying more items. Very clean dining area with a lot of tables. The stars of this place were the soups. Our table ordered the Beef Pho with the steak, Chicken Pho, and Chicken Coconut Soup; they were all delicious. First time we came here we ordered two pho's, spring rolls and two thai teas. The portions were huge brisket were long thin cuts which i liked. the meat balls were also huge. we thought, wow we found a local new place. However, the second time we ordered two of the same pho's to go. this time the portion was small. my noodles and meat sank into the broth. the brisket was little squares and the meat balls we're small. don't get me wrong the broth and soup was still tasty. i just wish it was more consistent with how i remembered the pho was from the first time we went. Our family had dinner on Friday night here, and were delighted by both the excellent service and our food--the three of us ordered different Thai dishes. We noticed right away how clean and sweet the ambience of this small cafe with its fresh bouquets of flowers and tasteful wall decorations. Our wait person, Sofia, was the best! She brought us what she called a welcome drink, a steaming pot of jasmine tea, which she did not charge us for. My husband had squid, vegetables and flat rice noodles, I had chicken pad Thai and our daughter ordered a chicken/eggplant dish. This cafe is definitely a gem we will return to. read more

My hubs and I have had lots of pho growing up and while I grew up in SGV with lots of viet restaurants this one could use a bit of work... firstly the spring rolls were not right, they looked and tasted like Chinese egg rolls, the skin and filling is not viet. I got a bun and the beef did not have any char and it tasted chewy and like it was steamed. I got my son a pork banh mi and the pork again was not charred properly and the bread had (panini) marks on top(?) it did not look like a proper baguette roll which should be light and crispy which it was not, I'm sorry to say my son didn't care for it. Lastly my husband ordered a khao soi and the crispy noodles got soggy fast and the soup tasted flat... it needed more umami. We ordered takeout and while service was a tad mediocre at least the staff was nice and the place looked clean.
