I had high hopes for this place because I'm a big fan of Vietnamese cuisine and this place is only 15 minutes from our home. We came on a quiet Tuesday and there was only one other table when we arrived. Nobody working at the restaurant seemed happy to see us. When the server came to take our order, he didn't ask if we had any questions or make any kind of recommendations. We chose three dishes that we actually enjoyed. We had the crispy chicken roll, the Wagyu wrapped in chard leaves, and the noodles with shiitake and tofu. One thing we noticed was that the flavor profile of all three dishes was very similar. If there are other flavor profiles on the menu, it would have been nice for the waiter to have made a suggestion. Nobody checked in on us during the meal to see how we were enjoying the food or to ask if we wanted another drink. When we asked for the check, nobody asked how our experience had been. We noticed rhat they add an automatic 18% to the bill. Maybe the automatic "non gratuity" (their language) accounts for the lackluster hospitality? I just read the two star review. Man, that person is weird. Lol This place is amazing!! It's great to have Vietnamese food, tapas style. You get to try different dishes and be able to share in your group. Everything we ordered was spectacular. We got the crispy taro roll, the clay pot with fish, dumplings, noodles with beef. I was pretty impressed with the presentation and the quality of the food. My whole group was. I immediately recommended this place to my family and friends! The inside was very beautiful too. But wait for it: the food was spectacular: cute, unique and charmingly arranged, and most importantly super delicious. So I've been brought out of yelp retirement and it wasn't for good reasons. It was my first and will be my last time going. I went with a group on a busy Thursday night. It didn't start off bad nor was it super busy when we arrived but as the night went one more people joined out group. While there was no one there we were barely accommodated with an extra seat. If anything they seemed annoyed at the addition of a person. Finally we had a final person arrive and we were refused a seat. I gave up my seat and stood in the middle of the restaurant for half an hour. Additionally, the service grinder to a halt and the second round of food we ordered continued to be delayed. Again I saw that there were other seats available but they were being refused to me. Even though other tables had extra seats available. It's one thing to not have seats available but another to just reject free ones is another. The food was okay and might've been good but the service had left a poor taste in my mouth. Really loved this place - don't know how I've slept on it, it's been around a while apparently and I've enjoyed their other location in Atwater Village - but I didn't know about the connection until I ate here. Ordered about 6 different dishes, everything was excellent. Standouts were the rice clay pot with turmeric fish - the fish being a specialty of the other location as well. Also the sourdough fish toast and the crispy chicken rolls. Noodles too. The design is modern and cozy. But this place takes it to the next level, with true tapas, authentic to the taste, and super unique. I got the spring rolls, the bison roll, the stone pot rice bowl, and the diced lamb dish. The bison roll and the stone pot rice bowl were my favorite. Bison roll was so unique and well flavored. Stone pot rice bowl, reminds me of a stone bibimbap, and it was delicious. The lamb was a bit pricey. Reminds me of diced filet mignon french style the Chinese usually serves. I loved the ambiance and interior. Super mellow and chill. This was our first visit, and everything was better than we expected. The ambiance was pretty, modern, and quiet. (They might have played "Take Five" on repeat... but it was nice to have background music that encouraged conversations.) The server was warm and helpful. There were only couples dining tonight, no families or large groups. We ordered everything the server suggested. Lemongrass chicken salad, crispy taro rolls, rice pot with turmeric fish, and later Vietnamese coffee crème brûlée. We loved everything. My bf's organic coconut juice was just out of a bottle, but it was surprisingly delicious too. I ordered a premium sake on a whim, which I didn't love... but I'm not a regular sake drinker. Overall fantastic. I've been a fan of Viet's establishments since Viet Soy was at the Silver Lake Farmer's Market, onto the restaurant on Hyperion, and today with Viet Noodle Bar. The space is stunning. It smells of temple incense, the art is great, and small touches speak to Vietnamese culture in a creative and intentional way. You feel the maker's hand in everything and it truly adds to the experience. It was also empty on a Wednesday evening. I won't go deep into the food, but it was delicious. One thing that Viet does well is bringing traditional Vietnamese flavors to new dishes while remaining authentic. He was far ahead of the curve of second and third generation restaurants in So Cal, doing things like transmuting Chả Cá Lã Vọng into Turmeric Fish Noodle and tofu pudding with ginger syrup into Organic Soy Curd. And that happens here: Bánh hỏi shows up differently than I'd experienced it before, and there was an alt take on Bánh bèo, too. But it was all DELICIOUS, authentic down to the shapes of each cut of vegetable and the care with which it was presented. Elevated, homemade, and unavailable anywhere else. This is what I think was unacceptable: my DC ordered hot water. And the server let us know that it was going to be $3. Hmmm. Hmmmmmmm. Really? Also, I ordered a rice lager. I was excited because most rice lagers use Jasmine rice but claim to be Japanese. And clearly Jasmine rice is Southeast Asian, which would be an interesting counterpoint to our food. The beer came out as flat as from a day old keg that had been sitting in the sun. I let our server know and he did nothing about it. I don't even know if he grasped what I was saying. But how much do you have to know to understand In fact, come to think of it, the same lack of training that would lead someone to pull a flat beer would probably lead someone to not realize that the solution here wasn't to mumble out an excuse and disregard what I had mentioned. Unless this was a down low bia hoi (fresh beer, a Vietnamese thing) experience. And I don't think it was intentional. At eleven dollars. The single most I've ever paid for a beer. Also, I thought that they were being progressive by not having a tip option in the POS device but it turns out they add some sort of tip. I thought that went out a long time ago. I could eat at this place every day- it's that good. I love Vietnamese food but this is unlike any other Vietnamese restaurant that I've ever been to. In fact, the dishes are unlike any other restaurant I've ever had. The flavors are definitely Asian, perhaps a little bit fusion, but they are so well balanced and flavorful. Things that you wouldn't expect to be tasty such as sautéed vegetables were amazing. We've had the Chard wrapped Wagyu beef roll, the Rice claypot with fish, Sourdough Fish Toast, fresh roll with turmeric fish, Weaving Rice Noodle with shrimp, Stir fry rice noodle with beef, Chrispy chicken dumpling. Missing the essence of the Viet's special balance of seasoning. The cooks here don't understand that balance, IMO. Started off with the cabbage salad w/chicken. The seasoning was mostly salty, lemongrass barely showed up and the breast meat was overcooked. Watercress beef was nice but a bit too sour. Fresh spring rolls w/the tiny Banh Hoi noodles didn't work. Noodles were way too soft, mealy/mushy to include in the roll. Didn't have that bouncy texture I love. Also, not enough herbs/lettuce...very disappointing. The dipping sauce was again, too sour. Rice....not memorable. We ordered the taro crispy rolls that never arrived. Asked for Viet iced coffee...waiter said, "we don't serve that, it's too late to drink coffee anyway"...alright then, give me your other caffeinated drink, tea. Server was a very nice guy who was by himself, full house on a Saturday night. Needless to say, we saw him 3x, at the beginning, when food came out and upon check settlement. Exciting, elegant, and evocative executions on classical Vietnamese compositions at this new Eagle Rock establishment. We ordered almost the entire menu to share among four adults and two children, and we were enamored by each and every dish. Flavorful, excellent temperature and textures in evert bite, meticulously crafted by the humming laser focused back of house chefs and staff. The host, waiter, and bar tender - all one gentleman, and perhaps an owner? Investor? - advised and accommodated us on this culinary adventure enthusiastically and entirely from start to finish. And a nice selection of beers, wine, and sake to enjoy with all the tapas. A lot of promise for Viet Tapas Bar in this quaint stretch of Colorado Blvd, just across the street from another Eagle Rock institution: Casa Bianca. This intimate hidden gem is serving some of the most elegant yet uncomplicated food in LA. The quality ingredients and authentic flavors feel comforting and daring all at once. The service is welcoming and makes you feel right at home, but like you are visiting your epicurean chef buddy's place and he's cooking something special, just for you. The ambiance is minimally elegant yet inviting. A chill playlist wafts through the restaurant creating a vibe that feels effortlessly cool On our recent visit there were two new additions to the menu, the Wagu beef noodle roll, which had delicious, melty, beautifully seasoned beef beneath a delightfully thin blanket of noodles. This comes topped with green onion and crumbled peanuts accompanied by a light clear sauce which lit up the flavor combinations in a way that fires the synapses of your mind with every bite! We also had the wonderful shrimp noodle plate with bright pinkish red shrimp, cooked to perfection. The shrimp taste more like prawns and were uncomplicated by anything overbearing. The noodles basil and sauce serve to highlight the flavors of the shrimp. This dish reminds me of my favorite Thai dish, Pad Kee Mao, but stripped down and simple. Uncompromisingly uncomplicated and simply delicious. The crispy chicken roll is not to be missed which is accompanied by fresh veggie garnish that you mix and match to get just the right balance of rich fried crunch with succulent chicken and the bright DIY garnish of fresh vegetables. And don't sleep on the unassuming crispy rice with fish sauce which is just comfort food perfection. I imagine the salt and pepper glutinous corn must be inspired by a particular street food vendor in Saigon who caters to drunken nightclub patrons and locals working late into the night. They are so familiar yet seemingly teleport you to another world entirely. Again, nothing fancy, just great ingredients prepared with the kind of deliberate refinement that is just enough to make them special. Washed down with a crisp Vietnamese or Japanese beer, sake, or glass of wine. My wife has enjoyed a yuzu or ube soda on each visit. I am remiss in sharing my pure love for this little intimate escape from LA as I want it to remain our secret spot that we can walk into on a whim without a reservation, but it is just too good to not talk about.
