I first discovered pho in Vancouver back in 1986 on Main St. at a little hole in the wall joint called Pho Houang.Then moved on to the next family run joint called Pho Thang Long which happened to be the best I ever found in Vancouver.They closed dew to ridiculous rent increases on Main St. and did not reopen.Next I searched for an alternate source of good pho and found Song Huong at their original local at Naniamo near Broadway and followed them for at least 10 years to when they moved north on Naniamo to Graveley St.So of course another closure is imminent with their building slated for redevelopment. If you like spicy and peanut, the suggestion everyone makes for satay it up is 100% YES. I don't think I've seen this option before at a pho place but it was such a delicious broth. My husband got the rare beef and beef ball with the satay broth. I opted for a rare beef pho which hit the spot. The place moves fast. Very packed. Quick service. No fuss or frills. No trying to upsell. They don't have a napkin dispenser on the table. Maybe trying to conserve space.. for spiciness it would be nice to have a few more napkins. I ordered lemongrass chicken with rice and got a twin egg! For $16, I got a balanced meal. It's definitely worth the price. The lemongrass chicken is really flavorful and tender. The skin has a lot of flavor. It's not too oily or salty for those concerned. I would recommend this place to anyone living nearby. It's a good comfort food. Came by for dinner in a Saturday evening and it was the perfect timing since we got the last table! The staff were super accommodating of our larger party and was able to seat all of us together! The sate pho is where it's at. I've had the regular pho (typically I get the dac biet), which is pretty good - better than many places in Vancouver. But there is also the option to make your pho sate (adding a spicy peanut base to the broth), which is a huge level up at Pho Goodness. The sate pho is my go to in the city for hangover/comfort food. Haven't explored the rest of the menu much although the Vietnamese coffee is also decent. Service is variable, ambience is casual. Decent pho place on Main. Parking is available on the side streets. The place is a bit cramped. Theme is pretty bare bones, with some pictures on the wall. Some of the tables have benches instead of chairs. Staff were friendly. Pho is quite decent. Broth is nice and clear, but noticeably saltier than other places. Had a very good meal here, bun chay (tofu, vegetables, and spring roll on vermicelli) and lychee smoothie. The tofu was cooked in a sweet and savoury teriyaki sauce which was a nice change of pace from the lemongrass sauce that's more common, and it wasn't oily at all. The bowl came out freshly prepared with everything crisp and piping hot. Generous and filling portion, balanced between protein, veggies, and vermicelli (lots of each). The lychee smoothie was evidently made with real fruit because I got a few (only a few) small chunks of lychee, and the flavour was very juicy. My total was about $24 dollars (before tip), so not a bargain, but sensible for the amount of food and the good quality. As an aside, they make most their own condiments in house, and those that I had with my bowl were great. You can buy jars to take home. The vegetarian options are helpfully listed in their own section of the menu. There are sufficient options, basically one veggie version of each type of dish. The staff was very brisk but not unfriendly. Just working efficiently and no extra frills, which is common for this type of place. The wait time for my food was reasonable with how busy they were. Not much to speak of in terms of ambiance, it was a little hectic with so many people coming in for takeout and standing around near the register in the back of the restaurant, and the walls and some the furniture are showing their age, but if you don't mind those things, it's comfortable enough. I wouldn't go out of my way for this, but luckily the location is convenient, so I'd definitely return, and I'd recommend it for Mount Pleasant folks craving traditional Vietnamese. read more

The prices are reasonable : about $13 for each bowl. The quality was good. The quantity is very good! The service was OK - they were either tired or just simply not in the mood to say hello and thank you. But as I observed people come in, I noticed they were 'selective' with whom they greeted. Seems discriminatory to me! Ah well, that was my observation! They need to address the hygiene in their washroom, it was filthy! If i'd seen the condition before I ordered, I would've never eaten here. The food is good and I feel like I should give them more than 2 stars but the washroom hygiene and lack of enthusiasm in their services got me thinking.....for now i'll give 2 stars because my experience didn't deserve a 3 star. This has been my most visited Vietnamese restaurant for the past 4-5 years, so time for a little update -- especially since I've now tried dozens of other Vietnamese places in Vancouver, and I think this ranks very close to the top. Pho Goodness has several vegetarian (indeed, vegan) options on the menu, including a top-notch vegetarian pho ($12.75). The base broth is perfectly seasoned/spiced, with the perfect amount of saltiness and plenty of depth. I almost always order the spicy pho sate broth (+$1.75) to increase the intensity and richness -- the broth is absolutely decadent, with rich sate flavours, just enough sweetness, and moderate spiciness. Each bowl of (veggie) pho comes with a generous portion broccoli, cauliflower, carrot, fried tofu, and of course noodles, and is garnished with onions and cilantro, with bean sprouts, lime, and basil on the side. The place itself is a pretty bare bones hole in the wall and the service is competent but not particularly warm. But who really cares about that for a pho place, right? The pho is what matters and it is sublime here. It's cash or debit only, which is annoying but not unusual for Vietnamese places. If you're anywhere near, this is one of the best pho spots in Vancouver. read more

First meal back after our Europe trip. Time for some Asian food. We wanted to check out Toshi for sushi but they had an insane wait list of 30 people. Decided to try Pho Goodness. They have a second location on Davies Street. We dropped in on a Tuesday evening (around 8:15pm) and it was busy. Service is standard fare. Go up to the counter at the back to pay. The menu consists of starters, banh mi, pho, noodle soups, rice dishes, vermicelli noodles, vegetarian options and drinks. They also have an option to add a spicy peanut sate broth ($1.75 extra). - Herbs - bean sprouts, Thai basil and lemon wedges. - Pho dac biet (#20) ($10.95) - rare beef, brisket, beef balls and tripe. Rare beef was the best of their meat offerings. We added the peanut sate ($1.75) which wasn't too spicy but on the salty side. I've had better sate elsewhere. - Bun cha ca ($11.50) - aka. fish cake noodle soup. This came with homemade fish cakes, tomato and celery. Nowhere close to the quality you get at Hoang Yen. Broth lacked depth and the fish cakes had no meaty substance. - Bun thit nuong tom (#45) ($11.50) - we ordered this for takeout. Oddly, they don't bring it to the table and didn't let us know it was ready. Nothing really stood out at PG. Decent but there's much better Vietnamese options. 2.5 stars. read more

I had heard good things about this place and I must say, I was disappointed in the food! The broths that my friends ordered were salty and did not come piping hot. There was not very much meat and the noodle portion was average for $10 each bowl and no choice of size. The chicken banh mi I ordered was tasty but again, was way too salty that I just kept drinking more and more water. The bread itself was soft yet crispy and chicken was flavourful but there were not enough veggies to light up an otherwise heavily flavoured sandwich. We also tried their house special roll and it was okay but a little bit expensive for what you get. Overall, average pho and food for high prices. At least the place is clean! read more

This place is so good with their phó and spicy peanut saté broth! So good. Love coming here for their phó and saté peanut spicy broth. Amazing. They are usually very busy during lunch times. And the restaurant itself isn't that large. They can accommodate somewhat large groups. I'd say 6-8 people, split into two tables. But during the lunch rushes you'll be waiting a while for a table. If you come here after 2pm on a weekday it's not busy at all. But oddly enough closer to 3pm and it picks up again. The ambiance is bright in here. And there is picture of Vietnam all around the restaurant. Price is pretty good. Not different than most other phó restaurants in town. So not much to say here. It's affordable. So you're getting good value for the pho and the phó here only comes in one size. And it's a pretty decent size. Good value. Location wise it's in the heart of the city. Main Street and 14th Ave. There is some free parking around the neighborhood. But if you're not wanting to walk. Then you'll have to pay for parking. This is one of our favourite pho restaurants in the city. Our go to when we are craving for pho. Yum!!! I am so lucky to leave 30 seconds from Pho Goodness. It is pure pleasure to walk in there and enjoy the beautiful phó. Make sure to " Make It a Spicy Pho Sate" to add spicy peanut broth. It will be the best $1.75 you will ever spend on. Their lemon grass chicken is pretty good as well. I have eaten at almost all Vietnamese restaurants in Vancouver and Burnaby. We live in the Mount Pleasant neighborhood, so this restaurant is just minutes away from our front door. We have been there several times and we have found the quality of their food to be good and consistent. While my partner gives a big "thumb up" for their "Spicy Pho Peanut Sate" soup base, I would like give a shout out to their Banh Mi Ga Nuong, which has grilled lemongrass chicken. Their food is good. Pho Goodness Sake! Why isn't satay pho a thing everywhere? This is my second time returning to this place, and each time I have had nothing but a positive experience. I've noticed a lot of reviews complaining about the service but I guess I've just been very lucky each time. They have a large menu ranging from bahn mi, noodle soups, and appetizers. For any of the noodle soups, there's an option to add a spicy, peanutty coconut sate broth for only $1.75. At my first time here, my friend C and I sat down and smelled the satay broth and couldn't help but order one for ourselves. I've fallen madly in love since. The satay broth tastes a little like laksa. It's kind of like a Vietnamese version of laksa, if you will. Out of the different noodle soups I've tried the satay with so far, I feel that the lemon grass chicken pho goes best with this specialty broth. read more

After two visits here I can say the food was really good and I'll be back. The service is prompt and not overly friendly and in your face which is fine by me. They are all about being quick and efficient I guess as this is not fine dining. Lemon grass chicken with spring rolls and vermicelli was a large plate of food and completely satisfying. The big bowls of noodle soup are steaming hot and served with bean sprouts and Thai basil on the side. The kalbi ribs plate was also a winner. Large portions. I couldn't say enjoy about Pho Goodness. Never been disappointed here. Atmosphere is average, service is good, portions are large and the taste is amazing. You'll walk in to a blast of delicious broth scenting the air and instantly feel at ease. I'm not particularly adventurous with my bowl of pho. Usually it's pho tai for me with an order of spring rolls. The reality is that you're coming here for the broth. It's packed full of flavour and needs no adjustments really. Admittedly I do add some heat for a little extra sweat. There's always basil, bean sprouts and lime on the side of course! The noodles are chewy and perfect for slurping.
