Exploring the Pho, This is my 2nd time messing with the Pho and 1st time ordering in a restaurant. I am a Pho rookie working my way up through the ranks and in search of Pho wisdom gained via experience. So with this in mind, here we go..... This place is a dump. There was trash and food on the floor everywhere. Wow ! ! ! No exaggeration. When we sat at our table, it was obvious it had just been haphazardly wiped down. It was still sticky.....ugh. The place is small, ugly and crowded(surprisingly). The service was odd. I don't want to be mean, but several of the waiters had problems beyond their control and i'll just leave it at that. After we ordered and our food was brought to us quickly, the waiter never came back to check if we wanted anything else. The waiter did not speak english very well and there was a bit of a language barrier. Luckily the small menu is numbered and there aren't very many choices to confuse. I had the medium rare steak and flank Pho and Bazooka had shrimp Pho. We both had thai iced tea which was decent. My first bowl of Pho was at 7th st park in the LBC at an underground volleyball tournament for cash and prizes. This Pho was homemade and was the shit. Tasted totally different from all other soups i've tasted so far, both asian and other than. It had meatballs, shrimp, steak meat and some other meat i could not figure out. It had fat ass noodles with an abundance of green onions. The flavor was unique, sorta bitter sweat and it was fantastic. Now to Pho Hong Phat's. It was $5.50 for a medium bowl(which was actually rather large) The broth's flavor was alright. Not to flavorful in any way. The amount of thin noodles in the Pho was sorta skimpy and not too much meat either. I was baffled to why so many people were eating here. I did thoroughly enjoy 2 of the sauces they had at the table. Sriracha hot chili sauce and some other dark sweet and thick teriyaki/mole like sauce(was in a sriracha container but wasn't sriracha). Overall the soup was ok and cheap. Bazooka kept asking me "are you ok ? you look confused or scared or something" and i think that sums up my experience here. read more

Best pho in Long Beach! Been coming here since I was a kid and had to wait patiently when they renovated years back. This place only sells pho and that's it nothing else other than beverages, cash only. Customer service? Meh they tell you where to sit and take your order. After that you enjoy your meal and then you go up to the cashier to pay for your meals. The price for the bowls are a bit pricey but worth it. Considering the drive (time and gas) getting to Westminster. After the renovation the place is much cleaner, though still cramped in the main dining section. This place is family owned and has done well. Well enough that they close on Wednesday! read more

After a night of terrible decisions full of binge drinking, came here to make amends with my body and get some pho. Arrived around noon and it's pretty packed but got seated right away. Pho Hong Phat - I got the #1 in medium - Vietnamese Near Me - Long Beach, California

Thought I'd leave this place alone, but I see people trashing my favorite pho place so I had to intervene. The renovations in the past year have definitely improved the place. Now every day you can watch sports on the flat screen tv, and with the new blinds the window seats aren't sweaty anymore. Best broth in town. Extreme yummy fresh meat. I have NEVER seen the sauces less than 3/4 full. Yeah some of the staff aren't very talkative or smiley, but it's pho, stupids. My friends and I are here at least 1-2 times a week, and it PAYS to be a regular (took a few months, but we now get smiles every time). Pho is a perfect food: it is carbohydrate and protein, fat and salt, herb and MSG. Since childhood, I've sought the finest examples of my favorite food (and recruited the husband, who is now a bonified pho-natic) and have come up with a pretty solid rubric in grading pho experiences. Here is Pho Hong Phat's score card: Location: Not in Orange County--score! This is of lower importance, but its two mile proximity to my home does bode well for my favor. Condiments provided on the table: Sriracha and hoisin, red pepper chili paste in oil, fish oil, sugar, pepper. Soild, man. Plated Accoutrement: bean sprouts, lime wedges, thai basil. Again, this is solid, with no frills. I always hope for saw leaf, though. I think it's a regional thing-Northern style vs Southern style -- but I love that saw leaf. Oh well--moving on! Menu: Standard fare: rare beef, well beef, fat brisket, tendon, tripe, meatball, chicken, shrimp, crab. The menu is completely utilitarian; this is a pho restaurant for serious pho eaters--no pictures, no pork chops for finicky brothers-in-law. Its pho and nothing but the pho. Broth: As many have noted, the broth errs on the side of sweetness. I'm all for it! Extra star anise? Onions? I'm not sure, but the broth is light and aromatic, served up boiling hot and lightening fast. Maybe a three to four minute window of time between ordering and receiving. I like that; I'm a woman with much to do. Obviously. Noodles and Meat: Nothing special to note--good or bad. Ambiance: This is not a member of the new wave of fancy flat-screened Pho places in Garden Grove and Westminster. Between a barbershop and a Walgreen's, Pho Hong Phat is modest and shingled, and the inside looks more like your dysfunctional uncle's duplex than a restaurant, but the kitchen is bustling and the living's easy. This is hangover central on Sunday mornings, and some days I'm thankful not to have to wipe the mascara from under my eyes before steaming them up with a hot bowl. Price: Six bucks? This is a great hidden gem for Pho! They are cash only so come prepared! They are always packed and parking can be tough. They offer huge portions and service is fast. I ordered a meatless pho (I know, what was I thinking) and surprisingly, it had a lot of flavor, even without the meat and was very good. There is absolutely no reason to look beyond this joint for pho (unless you require pho after 5 pm or on a Wednesday, because you can't get it here in that case). The rare steak pho is perfect. Absolutely the best pho I've ever had. The broth in a word is complex. Is that cinnamon? Cloves? Hmm, let me take another taste. All of the sides are super fresh and in abundance. Tremendous value and you'll lick the bowl. Down side to this place is the screwy hours....I kind of feel its a gamble to plan on eating there...I'm still not sure of the schedule. I would say the ambience is a big draw (sorry Monica). After a few visits you'll notice a solid crew of regulars...Cops, students, an extra from Apocalypse Now...a real family establishment. You get a clear view of the kitchen where you see cauldrons of boiling liquid and tubs full of chopped garlic. All fresh and instilling confidence in your order. The icing is the tip jar. The pho here is okay at best. Being Asian myself I have an extensive knowledge of noodle soups. I'm sad that this restaurant is called "the best pho place in LB," BUT it's really not. The broth is bland and I usually have to put ALOT of hoisen and siracha sauce for it to taste normal. My friend and I got sick right after eating here. If you are a pho novice, this place will be good for you. But if you are a pho expert, stay away from this place. read more

Went here for lunch today after picking up my truck that I left parked near Alex's Bar last night, whoops. I'm so glad I did though, this place was really good. Like other people have said, there is something extra tasty about the broth, and everything is really hot and fresh. It really does look like someone's house made into a pho restaurant and the small is the perfect size for me to eat the whole thing and drink the broth. Open 8am-5pm everyday, closed on Wednesdays. Those are some wacky hours...I guess this place is more of a lunch spot. Went around 11am with my parentals and noticed it was quite packed...which is good for some, but I looked at the clientele and realized there was like no Vietnamese people here. Well, we are in Long Beach and there are like no Vietnamese people here so I thought mehh, maybe they have really good pho. And then I saw the workers and we ordered pho through one of them. The woman spoke to me in English with some Vietnamese...and then it hit me, all the workers were Cambodian! FML! Cambodian people cooking Vietnamese food to a buncha White/Mexican/Cambodian people? That's all bad, these people aren't gonna know wsup. You can give them can chua with bun and call it pho and they'll eat it right up lol jk. I guess they couldn't understand our Vietnamese and they put the meat separately for mine, but not my parents. Hot tea wasn't in a kettle and didn't come with those little tea cups, but rather a plastic one. Ordered coffee, but it wasn't the Vietnamese drip filter. Probably the best bowl of Pho that I've ever had. I literally used to come her for breakfast almost 3 days a week (when I lived down the street).... that's how amazing it is. The family that owns and runs it are the sweetest, and will start to remember and recognize you after your 3rd visit. I've been here what 5 years ago? When I first moved to Long Beach. Wasn't impressed. Frankly because I come from Little Saigon. We were spoiled with excellent Pho around each and every single corner. Word on the streets is the same owner who runs Pho Kimmy in OC runs Pho Hong Phat. Don't know if that is true but I had to see for myself. Second time around, different story. Pho was better. STILL NOT OC PHO. but to be honest you really don't have that many options in Long Beach and it was Decent. They only serve Pho so don't expect to roll through trying to order spring rolls or rice dishes. PHO is what they do and that's it. Pricing is reasonable for LA county and if you are having a hankering. This is the spot to go to. I live down the street so I will frequent maybe once a month. I know i know, the best pho places are in Westminster, etc... But, i work in long beach and i only have an hour for lunch so..... This place was ok, i actually want to give it 2.5 stars but it wont give me that option. I ordered the rare steak, which is good, but the amount of meat they give you is not enough, i had to order extra meat for $2. The price of the pho is cheap though so i give them that. Biggest bull ever is that they dont have egg rolls!!!! That is just unacceptable in a Pho restaurant! I had to go across the street and get small fries from mcdonalds just to fill me up afterwards. Pho is Long Beach sucks! Not authentic Vietnamese pho. For a place that strictly specializes in only pho, this place is pretty weak. I usually finish the soup at pho places, but in this case I just took one sip and just ate the noodles and beef. I didn't know pho places serve chinese breakfast rolls. Pretty weird. WTF! You're better off heading over to Garden Grove/Westminster for sure! Or Cerritos, they have better pho places than LBC, but Westminster has the best in OC. 1 star for weak pho. 1 star for hustling all the non asians who don't know shit about pho. Note: This is the start of a series of reviews for Pho in Long Beach, California. Pho Hong Phat is a great little Pho noodle shop in the heart of the Zaferia section of Long Beach. The Pho here is delicious and served fast. Located right on the corner of Coronado and E. Anaheim, it is right down the street from a fabulous mid-century modern furniture store called Urban Americana. Out of the four Long Beach Pho joints I will review, the presentation and the freshness of the ingredients is excellent. I usually get the rare steak Pho with a extra side of steak. The atmosphere has a certain New Your City quality due to the fact that the restaurant is on the corner of Coronado and E. Anaheim and is frequently visited by local artists, musicians and artisans which lends itself to a bohemian feel. The Pho is delicious and the staff are attentive. Be sure to get there earlier in the day, as Pho Hong Phat closes at 5pm. Pho Hong Phat is a cash only joint, so you will need to be prepared, but the prices are a bargain, so you won't need that much cash to fill your belly. read more

Let me preface by saying I'm not one to enjoy dining out because let's be honest -- most restaurant establishments have servers who quite frankly despise serving you. That's NOT the vibe that I get here. It's a family run business so the service here is awesome. Food comes out quickly and the staff is genuine and kind to their customers. Case in point: today I was a bit sleep deprived and I knocked over a glass of water. Without hesitation the servers came right over to clean up the mess and made me feel less embarrassed than I already was by reassuring me not to worry. Solid people, solid food. I'm impressed! Now onto the food. They specialize only in pho which leads me to believe this is why they are the best in town. The broth is savory and perfect. It doesn't have that nasty chemical, sweet or overly oily/fatty broth that you will find at other pho restaurants nearby. A bowl of pho here is so comforting and nostalgic. Another reason why I know this establishment is legit is because although there is limited street parking, the restaurant is always packed around lunch time especially on cold days. People will gravitate to good food despite any obstacle :) My daughter and I love the meat here. The tendon and fatty brisket is of excellent quality. It's to the point where I never eat pho meat at other restaurants. Also, they have fried bread/donuts. Make sure to ask for it if you're really craving carbs! Pho Tasty in Cerritos is wayyyyyyy better!! The pho here is very bland! And trust me..I know my pho, since I eat this thing 5 day's a week. On top of that...the server which I think was the Owner was very rude to me and the party seating beside us; 2 mins after taking our order, I asked him, if I can add two Chinese donuts with our order and he told us it's too late and said we should've added it when we placed our order...are you serious?!!! I also noticed they treat Caucasians(white ppl) with way more respect and eagerness to serve them. If you're a minority...don't expect top notch service unless there's no Caucasians in the building! Pho is one of my all time favorite foods on the planet..I have made it at least a bi-weekly meal for the past 10+ years. I have tried it in every city I have lived in (Portland, SF, LA, Tucson, NY) and I have to say this is one of my favorites. The broth is super clean, served piping hot, and its very flavorful. I order Pho Ga, with white meat chicken...and the chicken is lean and tender...no gross mystery meat! The best part about this place is the delicious chinese donut bread you get and dip into the broth. Sounds weird, but it is really fucking good. Service is always nice and fast. read more

This is my utmost FAVORITE pho place in all of the pho restaurants I've been to, and trust me, I've been to plenty. Their broth is deeper in color and flavor. Its full bodied and superr flavorful. Their beef and rare steak is to die for! Both super tender, nearly melt in your mouth, and sliced paper thin. Just the way meat in pho is supposed to be. The rare steak is soo fresh too, it doesnt have a musty smell to it. They also have chinese donuts to dip in their pho too. At first I was skeptical, because this is the cambodian way to eat it not the vietnamese way, but when i tried it, there were fireworks going off in my mouth it was DELICIOUS!! Parking at this place sucks, and it gets really crowded around brunch time (10am - 12pm), so come early! read more

Pros: Cheap Cons: Only takes cash, needs a makeover and tad more etiquette on the service. Experience: We came here because we wanted our lunch to be delicious with a new pho restaurant. The server sort of rushed us because we were one of three customers so we were being watched. The menu was a little confusing and rather worn. However their prices were very much affordable. Once we ordered our large bowls which were huge we got our food pretty fast. We put our condiments like you would with any pho however the broth was just so unsatisfying. It had no flavor and we kept adding as much as possible to make it taste somewhat good. All we could talk about was how much siracha to put so it's not too spicy but still enough to give this pho some flavor. Conclusion: It's not a place I will ever go again. read more

Ok. Here's the deal: This place is not pretty to look at (even though they just renovated it). This place has terrible atmosphere (crowded, loud, down-to-business). But this isn't where you go if you want pretty and calm. This is where you go for Pho. Now, I've learned that in LA, you can get Pho that is "clean" - that is, clear, mild in flavor, and all around lighter; as well as Pho that is "dirty" - which is dark, heavy, and stronger. Both are good, and both can hit the spot. This one is the latter. The broth is dark, strong, and acidic. And it's wonderful. It comes out good, hot, plentiful and fast. The noodles were cooked well, the seafood I got in mine was perfectly cooked, and the condiments were fresh. My friend and I dressed it, ate, and within a few minutes we were both sweating - the cleansing sweat that you get from a perfect bowl of Pho. My hangover was gone, my lingering cold symptoms were purged, and I was left with that feeling of internal happiness that comes from perfect Vietnamese Noodles. You come here because you come to take care of business - food business. You sit, you eat, you pay cash (15.00 for the two of us) and get out. read more

This place is overrated. My boyfriend and I came here for the first time because the restaurant we wanted to go to was closed. No one greeted us at all. They only thing they said to us was "ready?" I felt very unwelcome when two nice white lady walked in and all the staff rushed to them and greeted them warmly. The food was very bland, I didn't care to finish my food. When it come time to pay we asked for a check and they guy that took out order just pointed at a direction and walked away. We were confused but waited a bit longer and asked again. He did the same thing, just pointed. So my boyfriend asked "are you telling me I have to walk up there and pay?" The guy just said "yea," and walked away. We will not return to this place. Food was affordable, but we would rather pay more to enjoy the atmosphere and food. It's very awkward when you don't feel welcome at all. read more

I had the #14 large pho for lunch. It's the pho w/ everything in it. This is a popular lunch spot. Everytime I've been here it's always crowded. The pho is pretty decent for Long Beach. If you are in the area and craving for pho give it go. PROS: -Broth is pretty solid, above average 4/5. -Inside is re-modeled and looks pretty nice. -Cheap. Large is about $6 or so. CONS: -My friend found a hair in her broth (ugh). -The noodles could taste better. I didn't enjoy the noodle texture. The beef is pretty standard too. The beef should melt in your mouth but this was a bit dry. -Parking sucks. Street parking. Best pho in Long Beach! I've been coming here for years and although it may not be the cheapest pho, it's a price I'm more than willing to pay for the taste and quick service. You sit, order, and within a couple minutes your bowl is there in front of you. I always get an extra large pho tai add meatballs (the meatballs are very full of flavor, highly recommend!) Coming from the Oakland/Bay Area, I might be spoiled. Also having a mom that can cook well is a plus too. With that said, I can make better Pho than this place. it's decent for people that grew up with something like this. the Broth was bland and cloudy. there was no meat in my bowl (i asked for chicken). I got the Pho with meatballs and was very happy with it. Mind you, I'm not a Pho connoisseur , but I live near westminster and eat Vietnamese food frequently. This one is always busy and has lots of customers, which is a good sign. It seems to be popular in the neighborhood. For those of you new to Pho, the key is in the additional ingredients. You can put basil, chilis, etc. to your taste and tailor the broth to your taste. I would recommend this place for sure. read more

This place has the best pho that I have had so far. I have had pho in at least a few dozen places in several different countries and have never come across a broth base as complex and flavorful as the broth in Pho Hong Phat's beef broth. I have friends who eat here six days out of the week. Why not seven? Because it is closed on Wednesdays! In addition to the broth, what makes this places exceptional is: 1) the owners and staff are friendly, quick and helpful 2) they don't skimp on anything, including incredibly flavorful basil and juicy limes 3) their homemade nectar of the gods aka homemade chili sauce! This place has very excellent pho. I have been here probably twenty times, and it's always been delicious. Typical for a pho place, you had better order everything you want the first time you see your server, because after that he's done with you. However, I'd say the atmosphere and the clientele have slowly been deteriorating over the past year or so, and I'm done here. I know that on Anaheim Street you have to just take it for what it is, but this place has gotten a little too unfriendly. Some of the patrons are getting confrontational, the place is dilapidated, and they've developed the habit of leaving the doors open to drown out all conversations with the noise from Anaheim St. Maybe I've just had a few bad experiences that other people haven't, but there are enough pho places in Long Beach and Westminster that I don't need to sweat losing one. Edit: I was craving pho one day and remembered that this place does take-out. Problem solved! It's physically impossible for you to get there before your food is ready. Back in the days when this place was called Pho Hong Long, I used to come here A LOT, sometimes 3 times a week! It totally ruined my diet. My co-worker even called me fat and said 'You shouldn't be eating Pho'! The portion has gotten smaller, the broth lighter (somewhat inconsistent because at times it was really bland that I had to add a spoonful of fish sauce!), quality of meat stays the same with expanded menu items (mainly drinks and a couple of other items), and much better service. Parking still sucks (only street parking) which really affects their business. Realistically it's 3 to 3.5 stars, but the owner's friendliness deserves the extra 1/2 to 1 star. read more

My very first time here, a friend if mine actually heard good things and wanted to give it a try. The restaurant is located on the corner across from food for less, from what I can see there's only street parking. Small cute restaurant, decorated like your typical pho joint. We seated ourselves. The menu is on the table placed in a frame. You can get your pho in 4 sizes. S M L XL. I got the small #14 which had rare steak cooked steak tendon and tripe. I also got a Thai tea. It came out within in 2 minutes of ordering. The pho had plenty of noodles & meat but I barely got tendon or tripe. I probably had 3 pieces of tendon and very small chunks of the tripe. I was a bit disappointed BUT the broth was delicious. The Thai tea was ok not sweet enough and a little too much cream. While we were there the restaurant was showing a woman their LA restaurant plaque they received which was pretty cool. To finish this off, yes I'd recommend giving this pho spot a try, not bad for the price, 2 pho 1small and 1 large with 2 Thai teas came out to about $16. Good meal for under $20! read more
