    Crispy chicken Bahn mi
    Smitha A.

Blink and you miss it as you drive down little Saigon and El Cajon blvd. But do yourself a favor and make sure you walk in! The food, the service. Incredible. And it's all vegan and all gluten free. The homemade vegan gluten free bread is to die for! Crispy and chewy. Like a good Bahn mi roll should be. The crispy chicken tasted...well, like chicken. We also had the veggie gyoza. What is the sorcery they use to make the wrapped?! And their home made gyoza sauce and chili sambal are so good. Finally we had the crispy noodles. Ever since I was diagnosed with a wheat allergy, I have missed pan fried noodles most. Well, no more! I had them today and they were incredible. The veggies in the brown sauce were the real star though. Those giant mushroom. Bok choy. Crisp broccoli. So good. I already want to go back! And to top it off, vegan crème brule? It was perfection. And also vegan. Did I say I can't wait to go back? S, I owe you big for helping me find this spot!

Wow I'm not even vegan and this place was bomb!! My friends stopped by because we heard good things and I'm shocked how yummy everything was. The service was amazing, Trang and Lim were amazing and so nice! We were amazed by the HUGE menu 1800+, they truly have everything you can think of. The ambiance is cheerful, clean, and good music. They make every single thing in house from the meat alternatives, the gluten free bread, and even to the hot sauces. They do it all, it was so yummy. If I'm back in San Diego I'll be back! I got the mapo tofu and the beef spring rolls and tofu sandwich. For desert we had their creme brulee and flan! The creme brulee was amazing and they said they spent 10 hours making it. Oh also they had really freaking water infused with fruit!

I'll start by saying that this place has been on my list of places to check out for a while, but unfortunately caught me off guard with the pricing. I think the concept is wonderful, vegan Vietnamese comfort food options made from scratch. And the quality of food is great. Service is friendly, and I really wish I could say I'd come back. The first thing you see is green. Green walls, green tables, lots of green in a casual setting. The second thing you will notice is the extensive menu... it's just too many options - pages and pages of options. The third thing you will notice is the price. Not a single food item, appetizer, soup, banh mi, price under $24! That's highway robbery no matter how you frame it. $9 for a Vietnamese coffee. This hits you hard as you start trying to do math on how you can justify paying more than $75 for spring rolls, banh mi, and a coffee, after tax and tip. On one hand, you feel guilty because you already sat down and have been given delicious lemonade and the service is friendly. You want to support this place. But on the other hand the prices are absurdly disconnected from value. So you order the one appetizer and it costs $30 to split between three people before heading out. We got the Vietnamese pancake and it was great, especially considering vegan, but worth half the cost. Again, friendly service and we were given a 10% first timer discount, and really delicious dessert samples. So my advice to the owners would be: revisit your business model. The prices are much too high. The menu has too many options - it would help overhead costs and hopefully menu pricing to be able to focus on just the top 30 most popular items, and then feature a special rotating monthly list of 1-3 items if they want to keep it interesting. Lastly, the desserts were amazing. A missed opportunity to not offer larger sizes at a normal cost for those desserts. I would happily pay $10 (not $24!) for a double serving of the desserts offered. I wish the owners success, thank you for amazing service!

I don't come to San Diego often but after trying the food here, I might move here!! I'm vegetarian and I'm always looking for new Vietnamese spots and this restaurant exceeded my expectations. First off, the menu is stacked! They have a wide range of dishes, whatever you're thinking of they most likely have. I got the bun hue and vietnamese coffee. The bun hue was incredible! spice level is adjustable, but i like it really spicy so I got a 5 level spice and requested extra chili on the side. So delicious and flavorful. The vietnamese coffee was perfect! It wasn't too strong where it'll make you jitter and it's perfectly sweetened. Not too sweet! Trang was such an incredible server! She was so great at explaining the dishes and even shared that everything down to the sauces are made in house! No wonder it's so fresh and delicious! The ambiance is so comfortable with great music selection might I add. Helen, if you're seeing this, thank you for the yummy food! I hope you open a location in LA one day!! I'll definitely be back whenever i'm in SD to try the rest of the menu!

Wow, what a lovely green and vegan restaurant. The service we received from Tran and the fellow, who refilled our yummy water each time, was great. The menu was overwhelming but in a good way! I'm a huge banh mi fanatic so I had to try theirs but with different add-ons, and I opted for mushroom and pineapple. It was interesting and different. But I was more blown away by the steam rice roll though. It was super soft, the way I enjoy it. It seems a little pricey, but considering how it's all made, prepared, and tastes, it's understandable. I wish we lived closer so I can try more of their extensive menu. But for now, I can enjoy some sweet goodies on my drive home back to LA. Cảm ơn!

Not sure if I trust some of these negative reviews, since some of them even said they didn't eat the food. Others you can't even see their profiles. So, I'll leave a legitimate review along with pictures. Initially, we were ambivalent about trying this place due to the high prices but they also have an exceptional rating on Google and Yelp. 4.9 on both Google and Yelp, that's rare. We bit the bullet and headed there. Parking can be tough but luckily we found parking in front of the restaurant. It was free after 8 pm on a Tuesday. If you go earlier or on the weekends, I would read the parking sign more carefully. There might be free street parking on the left side behind the restaurant. Don't quote me on that. Like I said, parking is not as easy as other places in SD. There are quite a bit of tables to sit in. It wasn't busy when we went. Yes, they do have a very large menu with like 1,000 items. We are not vegetarian or vegan but we have tried vegan places in Denver, CO. We ordered eel Helen pho roll, crispy beef chestnut and pineapple banh mi, and duck wonton noodle soup. The owner also gave us complimentary desserts, vegan corn pudding and vegan creme. She also gave us cookies and two cups of that delicious special water to go. That special water is hands down one of the best drinks I've ever had. Prices range $22-30. -eel Helen pho roll 5 - not real eel but this was very tasty. I like that the rolls don't fall apart easily. -crispy beef chestnut and pineapple banh mi 5 - the bread has a crispy exterior and the inside is moist. The chestnuts and pineapple really pair well together. I devoured this fast. -duck wonton noodle soup 5 - I really like the broth and the noodles. -vegan corn pudding 5 - this has corn with some coconut. It's a light dessert. -vegan creme 5 - this tastes like the real thing. I honestly wanted more.

Holy shit I am so impressed!!! We found street parking right in front. When we walked in we were greeted by Tran and seated right away. She went through the menu with us and gave us water. Water that tasted so freaking good! She mentioned the recipe is from the Middle East. Tran was so amazing! Plenty of seating inside. We found this restaurant on google searching vegan restaurants. This place did not disappoint. To be honest I knew it was going to be good cause being Vietnamese myself, my mom always used fresh ingredients!! Everything I ate tasted like my mom's cooking and that is extremely rare! Everything we ordered was 10/10!! I have no complaints from anything we ordered. It is expensive but you definitely pay for the quality of the food and you can taste it tooo! Can't wait to come back!!

    The amazing crème brûlée!

I had no idea this was a vegan spot when I walked in! I managed to snag a street parking spot right in front (score!), and it was well worth the effort. The menu felt a bit daunting with all the options, but I'm so glad I went with the Crispy Chicken Banh Mi. The vegetables were incredibly fresh, and the mock crispy chicken was like magic. It tasted exactly like Popeyes fried chicken but without any of the actual meat. It wasn't overly salty, and the texture was amazingly authentic. I felt like it needed just one more thing, so I grabbed the hoisin. It totally unlocked the most amazing flavor profile from the chicken! Combined with the fresh carrots, crispy cucumber, and daikon, it was perfect. I also really appreciated that they carefully peeled the seeds out of the jalapeños--that kind of detail makes me trust a kitchen immediately. You can tell they truly care about the customer. Honestly, it was one of the best banh mi sandwiches I've ever had. For dessert, I tried the vegan creme brûlée and it was SO GOOD. The sugar layer was expertly and evenly torched, and the crème itself... I don't know what kind of magic they used to make it taste like the real thing. I also had to try their chocolate pudding, and it was so rich with the same perfected textures and was just like whole milk pudding! So delicious Regarding the prices--yes, they are a bit higher, but it's clear this is how they sustain a humble business in a world where so many small spots were forced to close after COVID. They are surviving tumultuous, uncertain times, and the quality and freshness of the food make it 100% worth the price to me. I would trust these people with my life in a tsunami. I've never had vegan food this delicious, fresh, and authentic. This is a must-try in El Cajon and I'm so excited to come back and explore more of the menu!

    Vegan Hainanese Chicken Rice

Food. Bomb. Service. Bomb. Ambiance. Bomb. Trang and Lim gave wonderful customer service. If you're wondering if they got it, they probably do! Over 1,800 dishes to try. Even the water was delicious. I tried Hainan chicken for the first time and cleaned my plate. I'll be back!

House special combo banh mi with pork belly and crispy pork

Delicious vegan Viet spot, they deserve their flowers!! Our group of 3 came around 11:45 am on a Sunday and were seated promptly. Upon sitting, the super nice waitress introduced the restaurant's story and process and recommended us some dishes. The menu has over 50 pages and so so many items, the most I've ever seen which was super impressive! We shared 4 dishes among 3 people and were stuffed! -Helen pancake (4.5/5): Came with a side of meatballs in a sweet fish sauce and fresh veggies. The pancake was nicely crispy when fresh and the meatball was savory and paired well with the veggies. -House special combo banh mi (5/5): Loaded with pork belly, crispy pork, and fresh veggies. The bread was so good and crispy and I loved the combination of flavors. -Peking duck spring roll (5/5): Came with crispy duck and a tasty dipping sauce. The crisp and flavor were amazing! -Helen special fried rice (4/5): We chosen shaken beef and it also came with vegan ham. The rice needed a little more flavor but the shaken beef was delicious, tender and had a crispy exterior. They also gave us free dessert which was so sweet! We had the raspberry shortcake cookies, creme brulee, matcha pudding and cheesecake pudding which all were good. I liked the creme brulee and matcha pudding especially! Not too sweet and the texture was great. There is a small parking lot in the back where we were able to find parking. Decent amount of tables and clean inside with an all green exterior and interior. Their water is infused with lychee and apple which was super refreshing and tasty. They were great in refilling our waters and checked on us too. It is very impressive that everything is vegan, gluten free, organic and made fresh in-house and shipped from their commercial kitchen in LA daily. You can truly taste the freshness and quality and is worth the higher price tag. I will definitely come back!

Holy moly!!! I'd been craving some real comfort food for a while, and since I'm vegetarian, this place had been on my list forever so I finally made it happen. Parking can be a bit tricky with mostly paid spots on the street, but they do have a small free lot for customers behind the Middle Eastern market next door, which is good to know. From the moment I walked in, I was greeted right away and the whole place had such a warm, homey vibe. Their menu is huge, so be prepared to feel a little overwhelmed but definitely ask the staff for recommendations, they're super helpful. I was in the mood for something soupy, so I went with the Tom Yum noodle soup. As someone who's never had meat, I've always been curious about the taste and texture, so I tried the "chicken" option for protein. The staff mentioned it also had pieces resembling shrimp and duck, which was interesting. They also brought out an herbal drink, which was unexpectedly delicious. The Tom Yum was exactly what I needed, pure comfort food. Honestly, it felt like something homemade. I packed up leftovers and when I ate it at home later,I had to remind myself it was from a restaurant because it really tasted like a home cooked meal. The service made it even better, the hostess was so kind, kept checking in, and even brought out a little crème brûlée and a tapioca dessert for me to try. Both were delicious, and I appreciated that they weren't overly sweet. Yes, it's a bit on the pricier side, but as a supporter of local businesses and the fact that they make their own tofu and mock meats, and a lot of the menu is gluten-free, it feels worth it, especially for food that tastes this comforting. I'd highly recommend giving this place a try, even if you're not vegetarian or vegan. I'm already looking forward to coming back to try their bao buns and bánh mì sandwiches.

Their infused water is sooo good

Heard good things about them and finally went to try after hearing they made it to Yelp's top 100 list, which is so deserved! The restaurant is a green color inside and out and cutely decorated. The woman working was super friendly and helpful in explaining their impressively extensive menu (over 1000 items?!). Came with my sister and vegetarian cousin and we all agreed everything was DELICIOUS! The 3 of us shared 4 dishes and were stuffed! Peking Duck Roll (5/5): I loveee spring rolls and haven't seen Peking duck in a vegan spot so this was new. I love the texture and flavor and crisp! Classic Banh Mi- House Special (5/5): we heard the banh mi is their signature dish, so we ordered the house special which comes with pork and pork belly. Sooo good and crispy Helen Special Fried Rice (4.5/5): we got it with the shaking beef, which was the highlight of the dish, and also included small pieces of ham. I thought the rice could've used for flavor though Helen Pancakes (4/5): reminds me of little mini banh xeo. Topped it with the meatball and it was good to eat fresh with lettuce when it's still crunchy We were seated immediately when we came for a Sunday lunch, and found parking in the small lot out back. Their fruit-infused water is also so yummy and they were great in refilling our cups lol. They also gave us complimentary desserts which was so sweet of them! I especially enjoyed the matcha pudding and creme brûlée. Everything is vegan, gluten free, non-GMO, organic and made in-house and shipped from their LA commercial kitchen daily, so it explains the higher price but you can absolutely taste the quality. The texture and flavor of the "meats" is truly incredible, I'm in awe. I will definitely come back!

First of all, the water here is amazing! It's infused with lychee and a certain type of apple. It's delicious and free. Everything my friend and I ordered was great--banh mi, udon soup, lemongrass tofu. It was all very fresh and clean tasting. I really enjoyed my meal and the atmosphere. The staff was very friendly and attentive, and they also gave us numerous desserts to try. Certainly recommend (for vegans and omnivores alike)! Update: I've been back several times, with my brother, friend, and parents. Every time I come here the staff is so welcoming, kind, and thoughtful. The food is prepared from scratch at a commercial kitchen in Los Angeles and shipped to San Diego multiple times per week. When I say they make the food from scratch--I'm talking the bread, the chili sauce, the soy sauce, the mock meats, the noodles, absolutely everything. This restaurant is an incredible labor of love, and the food is unbelievably good. Whether you're vegan, vegetarian, omnivore, or carnivore, this is hands-down one of the best Vietnamese restaurants in San Diego and even Southern California.

Hello. What cooking oil does your restaurant use? Thank you.

Call the restaurant they are super friendly and the food is really good!

Is the menu gluten free and safe for people with celiac disease?

They have a ton of gluten free options !

Will you be closed the whole day on Thanksgiving 11/23? open the days before and after as usual?

We only closed on Wednesday the 11/22. Normal hour for 11/23 and 11/24.

    Do you take reservations?

I called and they generally do not take reservations since there mostly is ample seating space at any time of day.

Are all of the menu items vegan or only some?

    Everything is vegan

Is the house special sandwich the replacement for the bahn mi sandwich? If so,is it still the same size sandwich going for double the price?

My name is Helen , I am the new owner this restaurant . I took this restaurant from previous owner, she lost business because her price and I step in to change better ingredients, most my ingredients use organic products to make good quality food…

Eventually, I told my husband to flag down a waiter just to find out what was going on and how we were supposed to alert someone that we were there. When he finally spoke with an employee, we were told that our number had been called and that after five minutes they considered us a "no-show." That explanation made absolutely no sense because we had been standing inside the restaurant for at least 15 minutes, and during that entire time, we never heard anyone call a number or a name for ANYONE. To claim we were a no-show when we were physically standing there waiting to be acknowledged was extremely frustrating. Unfortunately, things didn't improve much from there. I'm from Dallas, Texas, where we have plenty of great Vietnamese restaurants, so I know what good pho and Vietnamese food should taste like. Unfortunately, this experience fell short. I ordered the chicken pho, and my husband ordered the bbq pork vermicelli. For appetizers, we ordered the egg rolls and the pork paste spring rolls. I did enjoy the pork paste spring rolls, but the egg rolls were very greasy and tasted like they had been re-fried. My chicken pho was also disappointing. The noodles were cut in half and were so mushy that they practically disintegrated in the broth. The service was also lacking, and the staff did not come across as particularly friendly or welcoming. While the pork paste spring rolls was a bright spot, the overall quality of the food and service left a lot to be desired. Don't believe the hype.

With the friendly, advice of the waitress at the bar we ordered a good variety of food, without it being too spicy for me. The ambiance was perfect. We plan to go back.

Phuong Trang has been a San Diego staple for decades. It first started in Linda Vista in 1988,…read moreserving traditional Vietnamese family-style meals before moving to its current home on Convoy in 1992. Today, it's one of the most well-known Vietnamese restaurants in the city, and after this visit, I can definitely see why. One of my favorite things about coming here is the location. Even though it's right in Convoy, parking has never been an issue for me. I usually avoid the area because finding a spot can be a headache, but Phuong Trang has a large parking lot that makes stopping by so much easier. I came in for a quick takeout lunch. One thing to know before you go is they don't accept Apple Pay, so make sure to bring a physical card or cash. The staff was incredibly welcoming. They greeted me when I walked in, gave me plenty of time to look over the menu, and never made me feel rushed. That kind of hospitality really stood out. I ordered the Char-Grilled Beef Vermicelli and the Shrimp, Pork & Jellyfish Salad. The salad comes with shredded green papaya, celery, cucumber, carrots, shrimp, pork, jellyfish strips, fresh mint, crushed peanuts, and shrimp chips. The salad was refreshing with plenty of shrimp and jellyfish throughout. I especially liked the crunch from the green papaya. My only complaint was that the dressing felt a little one dimensional. I wish it had a little more brightness to bring out the fresh herbs and vegetables. It was still enjoyable, though. The Char-Grilled Beef Vermicelli was my favorite of the two. It came with vermicelli noodles, fresh herbs, pickled daikon and carrots, crushed peanuts, plus five grilled beef rolls wrapped around scallions. The beef had a delicious smoky flavor from the grill. The only downside was that the inside of the rolls was a little chewy since it didn't get the same char as the outside. Even so, every bite was packed with flavor, so it wasn't enough to take away from the dish. Between the friendly service, quick turnaround for takeout, and solid food, I can see why Phuong Trang has stayed so popular for all these years. I'd happily come back and keep working my way through their menu.

It is such a comfort food place for me, having grown up eating Vietnamese dishes. The restaurant is clean and efficient. The banh beo (small steamed rice cakes with shrimp) and nuoc mam (fish sauce) it comes with is so good - you can either get each rice cake in separate bowls (as pictured), which is perfect for sharing, or just have them all on one plate altogether if you'd prefer to enjoy them all for yourself. Pour the fish sauce over the banh beo before eating! They have lots of options for bun bo hue (spicy Vietnamese noodle soup) depending on what toppings you want, and you can choose between the small and large size. Each bun bo hue dish comes with a side of bean sprouts, lettuce, and lemon that you can put into the broth. Their broth, meat, and noodles all taste very good. Would definitely recommend checking this place out!

Banh beo: undercooked, good nuoc mam Bun Bo hue: lacked depth of flavor, no lemongrass or aromatics that define the dish, fish cake ball was great and wish there was more of it Com tom nuong: they brought it to us missing the shrimp patty. Shrimp was cooked well and broth was clear and savory. I never expect great service in Vietnamese restaurants but there was one lady who looked like she'd rather be anywhere else but there. It made the whole experience a bit depressing. Flies also were around our food as we ate. I would not come back or recommend it to friends.

Ive been here twice now and heres my honest review on this place:…read more Ambiance: More formal than casual but definitely leaning more towards casual-formal than formal-formal -- the place itself has a nice vibe with an island bar in the center surrounded by high tops, tables, and booth + table seating. If I had to describe it in one word I would say "aesthetic". Service: Great, the servers check in a decent amount of the time and you can usually flag them down if you need anything Food: This is where my review goes downhill. The only thing I would say is worth getting at this restaurant is the baguette with butter (no add-ons, caviar or whatever they have going on at the time -- its just not worth it -- when I got the black truffle on my butter the shavings were so thin they might as well have not been there since it made no difference in flavor) The tamarind wings are one dimensional -- the wings are fried well, but lack in flavor, its straight *overwhelming* tamarind with no other notes. House made egg noodles lack any sort of noticeable flavor, most of it stemming from the Lap Cheong but most definitely not worth the price tag that it holds ($36) The dry aged duck is where I feel the most "scammed out of". Ive gotten this both times i've been here. Both times its been overly salty. I understand its dry-aged, but the saltiness overtakes any other flavor of the duck. The sauces try to make up for the lack of flavor but they just cant carry the entire dish on their own -- especially not for a $100 price tag. The first time I ordered this dish (Jan 2026) the duck came out cold-warm, and the second time I came here (July 2026) it came out warmer.
