We found this place on a whim just looking for a veg Banh mi, but once we sat down we realized this was more than just a sandwich shop. The menu is a bit overwhelming at first because they have such a huge selection, this is truly an Asian vegan dream. If you've got some childhood meat dishes you're craving, chances are they have a plant based version here! Their dessert was also top notch, they are individual sizes and I'm not sure if that is a good thing or bad thing, because I would have demolished an entire cheesecake. The service was also wonderful, the server told me about the restaurant's owner and history, she was so kind and offered us an extra portion of a banh khot so we would have gave equal amounts to try. They also offer free lemon water (more like unsweetened light lemonade) which they constantly refill. The server said they made it all in house daily. It looks like a hole in the wall at first glance, but truly is a gem of a place! read more

Not sure if I trust some of these negative reviews, since some of them even said they didn't eat the food. Others you can't even see their profiles. So, I'll leave a legitimate review along with pictures. Initially, we were ambivalent about trying this place due to the high prices but they also have an exceptional rating on Google and Yelp. 4.9 on both Google and Yelp, that's rare. We bit the bullet and headed there. Parking can be tough but luckily we found parking in front of the restaurant. It was free after 8 pm on a Tuesday. If you go earlier or on the weekends, I would read the parking sign more carefully. There might be free street parking on the left side behind the restaurant. Don't quote me on that. Like I said, parking is not as easy as other places in SD. There are quite a bit of tables to sit in. It wasn't busy when we went. Yes, they do have a very large menu with like 1,000 items. We are not vegetarian or vegan but we have tried vegan places in Denver, CO. We ordered eel Helen pho roll, crispy beef chestnut and pineapple banh mi, and duck wonton noodle soup. The owner also gave us complimentary desserts, vegan corn pudding and vegan creme. She also gave us cookies and two cups of that delicious special water to go. That special water is hands down one of the best drinks I've ever had. Prices range $22-30. -eel Helen pho roll 5 - not real eel but this was very tasty. I like that the rolls don't fall apart easily. -crispy beef chestnut and pineapple banh mi 5 - the bread has a crispy exterior and the inside is moist. The chestnuts and pineapple really pair well together. I devoured this fast. -duck wonton noodle soup 5 - I really like the broth and the noodles. -vegan corn pudding 5 - this has corn with some coconut. Holy shit I am so impressed!!! We found street parking right in front. When we walked in we were greeted by Tran and seated right away. She went through the menu with us and gave us water. Water that tasted so freaking good! She mentioned the recipe is from the Middle East. Tran was so amazing! Plenty of seating inside. We found this restaurant on google searching vegan restaurants. I had no idea this was a vegan spot when I walked in! I managed to snag a street parking spot right in front (score!), and it was well worth the effort. The menu felt a bit daunting with all the options, but I'm so glad I went with the Crispy Chicken Banh Mi. The vegetables were incredibly fresh, and the mock crispy chicken was like magic. It tasted exactly like Popeyes fried chicken but without any of the actual meat. It wasn't overly salty, and the texture was amazingly authentic. I felt like it needed just one more thing, so I grabbed the hoisin.It totally unlocked the most amazing flavor profile from the chicken! Combined with the fresh carrots, crispy cucumber, and daikon, it was perfect. I also really appreciated that they carefully peeled the seeds out of the jalapeños--that kind of detail makes me trust a kitchen immediately. You can tell they truly care about the customer. Honestly, it was one of the best banh mi sandwiches I've ever had. For dessert, I tried the vegan creme brûlée and it was SO GOOD. The sugar layer was expertly and evenly torched, and the crème itself... I don't know what kind of magic they used to make it taste like the real thing. I also had to try their chocolate pudding, and it was so rich with the same perfected textures and was just like whole milk pudding! So delicious Regarding the prices--yes, they are a bit higher, but it's clear this is how they sustain a humble business in a world where so many small spots were forced to close after COVID. They are surviving tumultuous, uncertain times, and the quality and freshness of the food make it 100% worth the price to me. I would trust these people with my life in a tsunami. As someone who's never had meat, I've always been curious about the taste and texture, so I tried the "chicken" option for protein. The staff mentioned it also had pieces resembling shrimp and duck, which was interesting. They also brought out an herbal drink, which was unexpectedly delicious. The Tom Yum was exactly what I needed, pure comfort food. Honestly, it felt like something homemade. I packed up leftovers and when I ate it at home later,I had to remind myself it was from a restaurant because it really tasted like a home cooked meal. Delicious vegan Viet spot, they deserve their flowers!! Our group of 3 came around 11:45 am on a Sunday and were seated promptly. Upon sitting, the super nice waitress introduced the restaurant's story and process and recommended us some dishes. The menu has over 50 pages and so so many items, the most I've ever seen which was super impressive! We shared 4 dishes among 3 people and were stuffed! -Helen pancake (4.5/5): Came with a side of meatballs in a sweet fish sauce and fresh veggies. The pancake was nicely crispy when fresh and the meatball was savory and paired well with the veggies. -House special combo banh mi (5/5): Loaded with pork belly, crispy pork, and fresh veggies. The bread was so good and crispy and I loved the combination of flavors. -Peking duck spring roll (5/5): Came with crispy duck and a tasty dipping sauce. The crisp and flavor were amazing! -Helen special fried rice (4/5): We chosen shaken beef and it also came with vegan ham. The rice needed a little more flavor but the shaken beef was delicious, tender and had a crispy exterior. They also gave us free dessert which was so sweet! We had a really delicious meal here! We tried a bunch of meats - sea bass, pork belly, crispy pork, Vietnamese sausage. I like Vietnamese mock meat preparations and this restaurant does it much better than other such places. The meats taste very fresh and flavorful. The server did say they make everything in-house. The restaurant is neat, nothing fancy. We were the only folks at the restaurant and found the service attentive. They promptly filled our glasses with the sweet fruit water. They also offered us complimentary vegan flan and tapioca pudding which my non-vegan family also enjoyed. First of all, the water here is amazing! It's infused with lychee and a certain type of apple. It's delicious and free. Everything my friend and I ordered was great--banh mi, udon soup, lemongrass tofu. It was all very fresh and clean tasting. I really enjoyed my meal and the atmosphere. As a vegetarian/vegan Viet food enthusiast, I'm so glad I was introduced to Thanh Tinh Chay!! I usually judge vegetarian Viet food off of their bun bo hue, so that's exactly what I did this time around. After flipping through 50+ pages of their extensive menu, which is so amazing, I finally came across the soup selection. I was quite taken aback that a bowl of soup was $28. My bun bo hue was level 4 spicyness, and it definitely hit the spot. After finishing my bowl of soup, I had a chance to speak with one of the servers- which side note, both servers were so sweet and accommodating. She informed me that all the ingredients are prepared from scratch down to the noodles and tofu, which changed my perspective on the pricing of the dish. The servers were so amazing as they provided me and my friend free dessert! The flan was delicious, but we both enjoyed the corn pudding even more! We also were given a discount after the servers learned that my friend liked this spot so much that she brought me. I cannot say enough about this place! The free naturally sweetened water they serve is sweet but not too sweet. Everything e have tried here is delicious. I usually get the chicken and rice. I came in here for some bao beo and I forgot that it's a vegan place. I went in there before but never got to order anything, but this time I wanted to give it a try. The lady at the cash register who was probably the owner was extremely nice. I ordered the bao beo and also bought a few of the small dessert cups to go with the bean sticky rice with coconut milk. Wow! The food here was so fresh and amazing. I came here two days ago and already want to come eat here again. I was very surprised by the large menu but that does not take away anything from the food. My friends ordered two types of the noodle soups. both delicious. crispy lotus and fried tofu were delicious sides. My "vietnamese sausage" banh mi was very good as well. Desserts were delicious too. Loved how the nice server explained the background of this location and how it came to be as well as how they make and get all of their ingredients fresh. Thanh Tinh Chay is an absolute gem. I was astounded to learn about this place after years living in San Diego. Our server Trang was extremely helpful. She told us that the owner, Helen makes all the mock meats in her industrial kitchen in Los Angeles using gluten-free, organic, soy ingredients. I recently discovered this little gem and was able to make my way down after being in the area. I would have never guessed this little vegan spot was here. You can see the green letters from the street view but the area itself is a bit sketchy. You wouldn't know it from the inside though, clean with plenty of seating. After talking to the server a few times, we settled on steamed tofu and white rice for our girls, a side of French fries, a crispy ham classic banh mi for mi and my hubby ordered the Pham tai banh mi. We were explained how everything on the menu was fresh and made in house- all organic, non-gmo. The owner takes pride in the quality of her food. We were treated to some fresh lemonade-tasting water that was refreshing and not overly sweet or too lemony. We enjoyed it. When the food arrived, everything was fresh and tasty. My husband loved his sandwich. I enjoyed my sandwich too but the meat although crispy was a bit too dry, it had a nice flavor though. I would order this sandwich again but try a different filling. Our girls seemed to enjoy their food, especially the French fries which didn't taste greasy. Our server surprised us with some deserts to try and everything we sampled was delicious- chocolate pudding, flan, crème brûlée. My daughter said the chocolate ice cream was really good. The lovely waitress gave us thorough background on the history of the restaurant and how everything is made from scratch. Finally got a chance to try Thanh Tinh Chay and can confirm that it is worthy of the hype it has received - I couldn't believe all the food is vegan! It is clear that so much care and thought is put into every single item (including the water, made from fresh apples each morning, with lychee, lime, and other ingredients), which is especially impressive given how large the menu is. The wait staff are extremely attentive and clearly passionate about the food, stopping by each table to explain the cuisine and specialties in detail, and our waters were never not filled to the brim. Absolutely loved the house special classic banh mi -- the crispy "pork belly" was exceptional. The complementary desserts were also amazing -- couldn't believe the crème brûlée (made through a very elaborate 10 hour process) was vegan! I wanted to give Thanh Tinh Chay the more detailed review with photos that it deserves. I feel lucky to have tried many of the dishes on their very large menu considering that I don't live in San Diego. I really prioritize going there for more than one meal every time I am in San diego and try as many things as possible there since the first time I went in 2022. This is the most interesting, creative, made from scratch, authentic and delicious experience for vegetarian and vegan vietnamese food. The dishes are very complex and every single element is made from scratch in- house-- Every veg meat analog, "egg" noodles, tofu etc is made there from scratch in- house and everything is done so perfectly and deliciously. Most of the dishes are made gluten free as well. You can see some photos on the wall of how some of these are made. The prices are high for the serving sizes if compared to regular vietnamese food but the quality and the amount of work and thought put into their food explains the higher prices. In addition, they seem to always treat their customers with a dish or a dessert on the house. I like their flan and jelly cookies but otherwise prefer the dishes to the Vietnamese desserts in the cold case. I have tried so many of their perfectly executed, interesting and complex dishes and they are all wonderful. I have tried and enjoyed these dishes: -Lotus salad (Love!) -Grilled beef in lolot leaf (So good!) -Fermented tofu soup: Vermicelli, bitter melon, eggplant, tofu loaf, "fish" cake, fresh mushroom, and fresh mix cabbage -Eggless Noodle Soup with BBQ "Pork" (Mì Khô Heo Quay) Egg noodle, house sauce, tofu loaf, fish cake, tofu, cilantro, celery, and comes with veggie soup on the side. Gluten free. -Thanh Toan House Special: Steamed rice comes with lemon grass tofu, shredded "pork" skin, eggless meatloaf, BBQ "Pork", crispy "pork" slices, fresh lettuce, tomato, and cucumber -Bahn mi sandwich (They make GF bread I believe) -Rice paper mix with shrimp app -salmon/ sea bass roll -Papaya salad with beef jerky and shrimp cracker -mushroom- lotus salad -Viet omelet with shrimp app -Spicy beef noodle soup: Thicker vermicelli, beef slices, tofu, fresh mushroom, pineapple, lemongrass, beancurd, fish cake?, and mixed cabbage. Everything is done in a thoughtful way-- even the complimentary water has a delicious mix of herbs in it. Not many places where I can't wait to have so much of the complimentary water! I don't remember everything I tried and not sure I can lable my photos correctly but this place is a must visit. If you are vegetarian, vegan, and/ or gluten free I would say even more-- do not miss this experience! This place really offers a rare opportunity to try so many authentic vietnamese dishes you might not have the chance to try elsewhere. Although the atmosphere is not particularly fancy, They make it feel really special with their service and delicious food and how thoughtful everything is. A 10+ stars from me! (and I am careful even with 5 stars :)) My general rating system: 1 star: I would stay away 2 stars: Has some good things about it but I generally don't recommend. 3 stars: Pretty good. The list of the top 100 restaurants for 2026 came out and I saw that Thanh Tinh Chay was #21 so I had to try it. When I sat down I was promptly attended to and told their entire menu was vegan. I hesitated as I am by no means a vegan. I figured, well I'm here so I'll give it a shot. I ordered the Classic Sandwich Banh Mi House Special combo of "pork belly" and crispy "pork". My sandwich had a nice crunch and all the classic flavors of a "typical" pork belly Banh mi. I was given their own house made beverage concoction which had a nice sweet lemonade flavor. I was told everything in the restaurant was house made. I also tried their flan which was very delicious. I had a very pleasant experience with the food and the staff, who was very friendly and informative. I was given a little history about the owner and also told what ingredients were used in each dish when I asked. I highly recommend this place especially if you're a vegan. read more
