This rating is 3.7 stars We were excited to try this new spot on Father's Day that offered pho beef short ribs. It's tucked away in a corner which was pretty hidden. There was only one table occupied when we came. The interior decor was nice and elegant. It was spacious and can seat a large party at one end of the restaurant. We ordered spring rolls and 2 of P4 short ribs beef. The server said it now comes in 2 ribs but thinner cut. The spring rolls came out first and the taste of the sauce and spring rolls itself was just ok because it lacked a bit of flavor. The pho came out next. The broth was standard but the beef ribs were nice and tender. The beef ribs were the only protein and unfortunately some of the other places we recently checked out also added other meats, tendon, and tripe to their beef rib pho. For that reason, their competitors stand out a bit more. They don't bring out the check when we asked for the bill. You have to walk up to the register to pay which I thought was a bit inconvenient. I've eaten here a handful of times now. I'm not a fan for their pho or pho broths as it's a bit sweet for my taste. I am a fan of their banh mi sandwiches and rice plates though. Tom is my favorite server here as he has the best memory and is super sweet. Prices are higher than what you would get in other Vietnamese places nearby in Mira Mesa. It's rarely been busy when I've visited or ordered take out. Each dish seems freshly made so it isn't always a quick meal if you dine in. The grilled pork banh mi is to die for. Yeah $13 is pricey for a banh mi but the bread is so delicious. It's served warm with just a great freshness to it. The grilled pork isn't all lean which I love as it provides extra flavor to the sandwich along with the fresh pickled veggies. It's also wrapped in paper when it's served. The grilled pork plate is filling and i appreciate how they'll sub extra veggies in lieu of rice. Their to go packaging is top notch as well (they have forgotten the side soup for the plate orders). I was excited to try this relatively new Vietnamese place that opened in Rancho Penasquitos. As they are newly opened, I think there are many small improvements that can be made, but overall it was a positive experience. My review is nitpicky on the basis of giving some constructive criticism to this newly opened restaurant. Interior: Spotless and nicely decorated! The conical hat display was lovely. However the bathroom floors are super sticky, and it was totally dark walking into the bathroom because of the double doors. I had to turn on my phone flashlight to find the light switch after trying to feel my way around for a moment. Service: The server was very polite! As they have a small number of staff, it was a little hard to get service a few times, including when coming in. Maybe a little door chime or a "seat yourself" sign would be helpful during times they have fewer employees. Food: Bun cha ha noi - Super flavorful, great char, and beautifully fragrant with herbs. I wish they gave more veggies though, and it also didn't come with any rau ram/Vietnamese coriander. It was beautifully presented on bamboo leaf and felt very impressive! Pho - Subpar despite being the namesake; it's a bit overdone on the spices to the extent that it detracts from the beef flavor, and it was missing a certain rich umami that I typically expect from pho broth. I think for the price, which is maybe 40-50%(!) higher than current prices at other pho places nearby, it had to be excellent to be worth it, and this did not come close. Seafood crispy fried egg noodles - Deliciously crisp with a savory sauce and relatively generous helping of seafood and veggies. My mom loved this dish the most. Overall a decent, clean, and uncrowded Vietnamese place with solid menu offerings, albeit at a bit higher than typical price. I wanted a quick bite in the area and that plaza already has a lot of solid food options, but Pho G‑Beef caught my eye. It's kind of tucked away in the corner near the smoke shop, easy to miss if you're not looking for it, but once you find it there's signage pointing you in. What stood out right away is that they brand themselves as bringing a taste of northern Vietnam with family recipes and more traditional flavors, which I was excited about, especially being Vietnamese and not having a ton of options like this directly in Rancho Penasquitos. When I walked in around 2 pm on a Thursday, there was actually a good amount of people dining in, which is always a good sign. The space is pretty big with a lot of seating, so I can see it handling bigger groups or being a regular takeout spot for locals. Service was friendly too. I ordered to go but they still brought my food out to the table which I appreciated. The menu is pretty extensive. They have rice plates, fried rice, vermicelli bowls, egg noodles, vegetarian options, appetizers like spring rolls and wings, plus pho of course. Drinks range from teas to juices and smoothies. I came specifically for the banh mi though. I ordered the S3 grilled beef banh mi, which came out to $12.50 before tax. So realistically you're paying around $13, which I will say is on the pricier side, especially considering it's also probably the smallest banh mi I've had. Compared to spots in Mira Mesa, you're definitely paying a couple dollars more, probably because of location. It took about 10 minutes to come out. I did ask for no cucumber and got a verbal confirmation, but when I opened it later there were actually a lot of cucumbers in there. Not a huge deal for me since it's preference, but still something to note because if it were an allergy situation that would be a problem. Once I picked them out, I noticed the spread right away. It had this slight orange tint, almost like a sriracha aioli. At first I was a little thrown off because when a place emphasizes "traditional," you expect the usual pate and mayo situation. I've had garlic aioli before, but never something like this. But honestly after the first bite, I didn't even care about that. It was really good. The grilled beef was thinly shaved and well marinated, so it wasn't dry at all. That aioli added a nice level of spice, which actually made up for the fact that there were no jalapeños. The flavor worked really well together. The pickled carrots and daikon were cut very thin, almost more like what you'd see in vermicelli bowls, so you don't get that same crunchy bite that I personally look for in a banh mi. That was probably the one thing I felt was missing. The bread though was really good. Lightly toasted, tasted fresh, and held everything together well without being too hard or cutting up the roof of your mouth. Even though the sandwich itself is smaller, it was still filling and had a decent amount of meat. Overall, yes it's smaller and more expensive than what you might be used to, and there were a couple small misses like the cucumber situation and less crunch from the pickles, but the flavors were there. That spicy aioli and the quality of the beef really carried it. I could see this being a convenient local spot if you're in the area and don't want to drive out for Vietnamese food. It's not the most traditional banh mi I've had, but it's still a good one, and I'd come back to try more from the menu. read more

This was our first time here, and unfortunately, it will definitely be our last. If I could rate it a 0 star, I would. We ordered a kid pho with meatballs for our daughters, and shortly after eating, both of them got food poisoning. I even tasted the broth myself afterward, and it was clearly sour. Pho broth should never taste sour unless you add lime, which we did not use. My older daughter, who ate more of the pho, had it the worst. She developed a severe stomach ache, was crying in pain, and eventually threw up everything she ate. It was honestly a scary and upsetting experience as a parent. We contacted the restaurant, and instead of showing concern, they immediately dismissed the possibility that their food was the cause, insisting their pho is "made fresh daily." Fresh or not, there are many factors that go into safe food handling, and something clearly went wrong here. Very disappointing experience overall--not just the food, but the lack of accountability. Can you believe this place has a happy hour? I caught the sign on the way in. The interior is lovely. It feels newly renovated, bright, and spacious. I especially loved the decor touches like the Vietnamese rice hats on the walls and the large floral planters throughout. I came specifically for the Bun Cha Ha Noi. Plenty of parking in this plaza. The restaurant is pretty spacious. When you walk in, there's a bit of a corridor/walkway so no one can see you and greet you. We waited at the sign that said please be seated but since no one came for some time, we went in further until someone noticed us. That was all fine because they actually seem a bit short staffed. There were only about 4 parties dining at the time but only one woman seemed to be working (more in the back). We ordered our food and it did take a while to come out (we were too spoiled by the efficiency at pho cow Cali Express). The pho was great- not as much msg taste as some other places, and the meat seemed to be really good quality as well. I tried the vermicelli with pork patties and it was plated impressively. Pho G-Beef really turned it around! When this place first opened, I was super psyched that a pho spot was walking distance from where I lived. Went to the soft opening but was super disappointed with what I got: a watery, cold, overpriced bowl with less meat than a vegan spot. I vowed to never come back. A year later, with a healthy dose of peer pressure from my extended family, a reluctant return visit brought me back to give them another chance. And boy did they deliver! Every time I go to a viet joint, I tell myself I'll try something new. Then cave and default to the ol' pho dac biet. And this time was not at all comparable to the first time. The broth was rich, viscous, and had a nice heavy mouthfeel. The bowl was absolutely stacked with various cuts of meat, I was half-suspicious that they were going to charge me for an extra serving. And the cuts were so fatty and flavorful, feeling much more premium than other pho restaurants. I left feeling absolutely stuffed and happy. Not much to say about the customer service, it was perfectly standard. Worker pointed us to our table, brought us food, checked us out when it was time to go. Environment was casual, not super loud and we were able to hold a conversation without issue. The side seasonings and sauce were good as well. Of course they had the hoisin and sriracha. The hot chili oil, salt, and pepper. But there was also this thinly sliced garlic in vinegar that I feel they prepped in-house. It didn't look like something you could buy from the local oriental market. Overall very pleased with this place. Though I've since moved away, I intend to return whenever I'm in the area. The wide array of menu items were intriguing and looked promising. I ordered take out of the Coconut Shrimps and Vermicelli rice noodles with pork and egg rolls. When I got home and unpacked my meal, there was a dead fly stuck on the plastic bag/top of one of the containers. Unfortunate first red flag. We came here twice this past week just to check out Northern Viet food. I saw a video on social media that mentioned northern pho tastes different than southern pho. We've only had southern Vietnamese food so I was excited to try this place. First time there we tried pho. I had the short rib pho and my hub had the pho g beef special pho. I gotta say, the broth was too salty, but I wouldn't say it's so bad I cannot even finish it. Knowing that northern pho has a different flavor, I was ok with it. But if you ask me, I still prefer southern pho. Second time there we ordered the roast chicken with fried rice, and northern vermicelli with pork patties. Both were delicious, especially the vermicelli dish. I had it once somewhere in Mira Mesa, both places are good but I would prefer Pho G-beef for better ambiance. Stopped in for an ice coffee rather than going over to BobaPop, was a mistake and won't do that again almost $7 for a Vietnamese ice coffee but it is nearly ALL ice. A fairly large restaurant. Huge menu of Vietnamese food including pho and other Vietnamese dishes. We usually share a plate of egg rolls, and they make great egg rolls. Served with a lot of lettuce for wrapping as well as mint, pickled carrots/radish. Not sure what the difference was but they were some of the best Vietnamese egg rolls that I've ever had. Pho was good though not great. There was a very nice plate of veggies to add to the pho, but the broth was not the greatest. Not bad by any means but there's better in SD. I like how the vermicelli noodles were warm and how they added a lot of cucumbers and pickled daikon to balance out the big portion of grilled pork. Pho G-Beef is an inviting new spot tucked away in Carmel Mountain Ranch in the Vons shopping center. I was pleasantly surprised by how bright and airy the interior felt. I remember the old Chinese restaurant that used to be here, and this place is definitely an upgrade--plants, flowers, and plenty of natural light make it feel bright and comfortable. The staff was friendly, and I appreciated how they offered a veggie broth option--super important for our family since we have a beef intolerance. We got the spring rolls, and they were pretty good overall. Fresh, nice texture, well seasoned. That said, we did find a long thin black hard piece with the rolls, which was kind of alarming. Maybe from a metal brush or something? It was definitely inedible, and after seeing a few other reviews mention plastic or other foreign objects in their food, it startled us a bit. The experience wasn't completely ruined, but it did make us question how careful they are with food prep. On the plus side, we asked about a tofu banh mi even though it wasn't listed on the menu, and they kindly made it for us--big points for that. It ended up being tasty and satisfying, with crispy bread and flavorful tofu. This is the kind of place that shows promise, especially if they keep the quality control in check. I want to love it more than I do right now. If we hadn't found that strange black piece, I probably would've already been planning my next visit. Unfortunately, had a less than good experience here. Low staff so service was quite slow and forgot my simple request to have pho without onions. Pho veggies arrived AFTER I had already finished the food. For the price, I was expecting at least decent food. I've had northern vietnamese food, but this was very mediocre. Kids pho was this tiny bowl of plain noodle and roughly 6 half pieces of meatballs, 10 dollars, maybe I'm cheap? Maybe that is overpriced, you decide. Probably higher rent due to location, I understand. I also noticed the hand soap was out in the men's restroom (closer to closing time) and a male worker entered after me. I can't imagine someone touching my food without using soap on their hands. It's truly a bummer because this place is conveniently closer to home. Given price, slow service and mediocre food, I likely won't return. But the experience wasn't horrible enough to not recommend a try at least once. See for yourself, hopefully things improve and I hope they can make a profit, restaurants is a tough business with razor thin margins. There's no malicious intentions in my review for this place.
