Only come here if you have no other pho option. We came here after a UCSD graduation. Everywhere had lines out the door. This place was empty. Shoulda known lol. They give you a dirty look after each order. Charges you 3.50+ tax for a miso soup bowl worth of extra broth. Egg rolls, the outside was burnt and tasted like old fryer oil. the inside was so mushy and soft. A vomit texture. The SALT AND PEPPER chicken wings... why was the taste so tangy?! Usually a dry rub. But theirs was a mystery sour mushy sauce. I was wondering why my pho tasted so decent... but then I realized my broth was more hoisen sauce and sriracha than actual broth. The bathroom is on the 2nd floor in a very dim lit place. Not really safe for a girl trying to use the bathroom alone. Good parking tho. Cause NO ONE was there lol. Extremely overpriced. Oh yum! I visit while on business twice a year. This place is great. The flavors, the portions, the simplicity. The dining room is simple with no fluff but the food comes straight from the kitchen hot and ready to add all your favorite ingredients. Located in a strip mall, Pho La Jolla is a simple restaurant focusing more on practicality when it comes to service and decor. I got the first pho on the menu and while it wasn't exceptional, it wasn't bad either. I also got a boba but they state outright that they use premade powder so I'm not holding anything against them for the drink's mediocrity. The one thing that killed the experience was when, in a half empty restaurant hours from closing, the waitstaff had the gall to bring me the check before I was done with the meal. And I mean visibly still eating with an incomplete drink. Either they did not realize how rude it is to do this, or they were trying to kick people out of the restaurant, which doesn't make sense. I've been ordering from this place the last few days since I discovered they make Hainanese Chicken Rice which is the Singaporean version of the Thai Khao Man Gai. I find this strange since pho is a Vietnamese dish. Ah, well. I first tried Khao Man Gai at a much vaunted restaurant in Portland, Oregon. Ever since then, I've been craving it. I even made it myself. But I'm busy right now so I ordered it to go from Pho La Jolla. It's not quite the same as Nong's Khao Man Gai from Portland but it satisfies my craving for this dish. The chicken comes with bones in this dish (unlike Nong's Khao Man Gai which is served with boneless chicken). So I tear the chicken meat off the bone, soak them in the sauce then dump the whole mix over the vegetables and rice. It's so simple and delicious and healthy. This is a go-to for me since I found a lot of Thai places in San Diego don't make Khao Man Gai, which is a pity. read more

The tenderloin sandwich is gone and replaced with sliced beef, the bread to filling ratio is definitely much more in favor of bread, and overall the good flavors seem to be now diluted. I am not a foodie, but after 15+ years, I do have some notoriety to make an educated review. First Phò, starts with the broth, if it isn't on point it just isn't Phò. As for me, I have an astringent taste for the right combination for a broth, and all I can stand behind saying is... "perfection" to Phò La Jolla.! I can't describe it any better.  Next, is the ingredients! Whether, meat, chicken, shrimp or veggie. It's doesn't matter. It's an overload of combustion and flavor. Accompanied by basil, bean sprouts, jalapeño and fresh lime. Mmmm... is the only description I can come up with. All I can say is that 15 years+ experience isn't a he said/ she said, it's a dedicated experience. Come and enjoy and you'll agree. La Jolla Phò is like no other. I got the special combination pho. There was a wide variety of meats, some were nice and tender but others were very tough and overcooked. I was also quite worried that the broth was not hot enough to cook the rare steak, it also took a while for it to soften up the noodles. The broth really didn't taste like a pho broth to me at all, I couldn't really taste the bone or veggies that would've been used to make the broth. Overall, this was still decent, albeit a bit pricey but just wasn't what I was expecting. I've been having Phỏ from here ever since on special occasions or whenever I'm feeling down. It's over-hated in my opinion. I came here with a friend and had the special combination Pho. We also shared the egg rolls as an appetizer. The broth is not the best I've had but it definitely gets the job done. It was filling and great for a cold evening. However, I could tell that the egg rolls were frozen, versus other places. I think Pho La Jolla can get even better by making their own egg rolls. The service is something that people on this site complain about quite a bit. I did notice that it was a little cold and rushed, but nothing to the extent other reviewers mentioned. The only thing I really want them to improve on is having a system for consistent hours of operation. He ordered the pho, which had a large portion, but the broth was completely flavorless, and the noodles were plain. He didn't even finish it. I got the BBQ pork sandwich, and it was honestly pretty bad--the meat was bright pink, fatty, and had an off texture. It was so unappetizing that I had to down two cokes just to get through most of it. We also ordered six wings and three cokes, and the total came out to over $65--closer to $75 with tip, which felt ridiculous for the quality. On top of that, the food took forever to come out. If you're looking for better pho, I'd recommend Pho Cadao Grill--it's way more flavorful, reasonably priced, and the service is much faster. read more

I was feeling under the weather today, what always makes me feel better is Chicken Pho & egg rolls. I took a trip over to the UTC area to see what they got. I remember, there is a spot I heard about that has amazing pho spot & a robot that serves you. I hand to check it out. The atmosphere is chill, they was playing some 80's to 2000's music & they have IPA's & kombucha to serve you. I grabbed me a table, the server came over took my order. All of sudden, a robot rolls out with food & it severs the customers. I was pretty damn amazed with the technology. My food comes, I always order egg rolls and they are the first thing I eat. It is no surprise that this place has only 3 stars... The Owner was extremely disrespectful to me when I placed an order the other day. He was doing some accounting at a desk next to the register when I walked in, and he was noticeably disappointed at the amount of tevenue, or lack thereof, that he was bringing in. So, he decided to take it out on me... As another gentleman was taking my order, he jumped in front of the cash register and took over the transaction. First, he tried to upsell me get me to order much more than I wanted to order. When I respectfully declined, he became irritated. Then, I asked him a question about an item on the menu, and his tone became very condescending, impatient, and antagonistic. I continued to order and was kind and respectful toward him the entire time, even though he didn't deserve it. Then, as I waited patiently for my order, he asked me if this was my first time in the restaurant. I told him that I've been coming there for over 20 years! (Frankly, the only reason I go in there is because it's the closest place to order Pho). Subsequently, he tried to force me to eat in the restaurant, because it was practically empty during dinner time and he wanted to use me to draw in more customers. That's the oldest trick in the book... I kindly declined and told him that I needed to get going. When the food finally came out 30 minutes later, I nicely ask him for some hoisin sauce and chili sauce. This is where things got very weird... He turned around and gave me a death stare and said,"No!" I was a little taken aback by his bizarre outburst, but I continued to be nice to him during this most awkward moment of the interaction. I asked him again if I could please get some sauce packets, then he proceeded to tell me a long story about supply chain issues and how he would need to charge me extra. I was so disgusted by his disrespectful and unprofessional demeanor, that I simply said thank you and left, with no intention to ever return again after 20 years of patronage... The Owner of this establishment needs to realize that here in the United States of America we expect common courtesy and the most basic levels of customer service. He needs to look within himself to realize why his revenue is dropping, why his restaurant is empty, and why he just lost a customer of over 20 years. read more

When I get pho, the number of stars I give for my review is heavily influenced by the quality of the broth. That is something in which Pho La Jolla unfortunately fell short, among other things. The restaurant is pretty popular as it is located close to UCSD. It is pretty spacious but since we went for lunch on a weekday, it wasn't too crowded. I appreciate that this place has separate saucers for sauce at every table, as I've recently eaten at several pho restaurants where I've had to put my sriracha on the edge of the bean sprout plate. Interestingly, the orders were delivered by a robot. The funny thing was, though, that a human server had to follow the robot to remove the food from the robot's shelves. And the robot moves really slowly so the human behind it has to as well. Honestly a rolling cart might be the more efficient, economical option here. The food is where things went a bit sideways. We ordered sparkling limeade, pho, as well as a Vietnamese sandwich. The limeade was pleasantly bubbly and super refreshing on a hot afternoon, but it was waaaaaay too sweet and didn't have as much lime flavor as I would have liked. The pho had huge portions of both noodles and meat though the broth was meh. The meat was well cooked and each cut was cooked appropriately, but the noodles were a bit mushy. The broth was really bland to me. It didn't really have any beef flavor nor did the spices really pop. It just tasted generically savory. The bean sprouts and herbs weren't the freshest, and I saw several bean sprouts with black specks on them. The Vietnamese sandwich was also a bit of a bummer. While the bread was well toasted, there really wasn't much meat inside at all. You got meat in maybe 50% of the bites you took. It came with a side of (i believe) chicken broth that was even more tasteless than the beef pho broth. Definitely a bummer :/ the egg roll it came with was pretty good though, nicely fried and packed with ingredients. Prices were decent for pho these days, but since I'm not really a fan of the broth here, I think I will continue my search for good pho and Vietnamese sandwiches elsewhere. read more

I think the food here is pretty good. Not the best Vietnamese place I've been to but hits the spot on a rainy day. It's generally pretty expensive compared to going to a spot in Kearny Mesa or Mira Mesa but it's convenient for me since it's right next to my house.
