    Tantanmen, Tonkotsu Ajitama
    Timothy Spencer T.

TLDR: It's good ramen at a respectable price. I think they understand what people want in ramen, the items outside of ramen, and what they're willing to pay for. Tantanmen: As a person who isn't a big tantanmen fan, I was shocked that I enjoyed this. The spice level was tolerable, and the saltiness level was okay, until you get to the bottom 3rd of the bowl. You get good portions and meat to noodle ratio, so it's worth it. Tonkotsu Ajitama: Creamy with a touch of saltiness. I love a good tonkotsu ramen, and I think this is a good introduction to tonkotsu. I'm glad that they have a bunch of options so people can customize how they want their tonkotsu ramen. Pork Paiko: It's not a katsu, but it gives that vibe. I think this is a good thing to pair with the ramen. I think the vibe is different enough from the chashu, where it's worth ordering. Chicken Paiko: it's chicken katsu with a different vibe. The batter has more body and is a different vibe compared to their fried chicken (karaage). Although I think the pork paiko is better, people who prefer chicken can rest easy knowing this is good as well. Fried Gyoza: I don't know what to say. It's a fried dumpling. It's not remarkable enough to be considered amazing, but it wasn't bad either. The good kind of average in general. Fried Chicken: It's a decent fried chicken at a good size. I just hope they can maintain the size, since many establishments have a hard time maintaining chicken quality after a while. Service: You pay first before being seated, and most of the stuff is self-service, so the interaction is really just when ordering and when they drop off the food. Ambiance: Classic ramen shop. Well lit, smells good, and located in an upscale mall.

Menya Ultra was the first ramen shop I tried when I moved to San Diego so it has a special place in my heart. I was very excited to see that they had opened at UTC! I swung by recently for a casual dinner with friends, and we were seated with no wait. I ordered the spicy miso tonkotsu with an egg, and our food came out quickly. The broth is silky and rich without being too fatty, and I think that is what sets Menya ultra apart from other bowls of tonkotsu-broth ramen. The spicy is SPICY, I was red and sweating but couldn't get enough. The noodles were nothing to write home about, and I do prefer the bouncier mochi noodles from other SD ramen shops, but they were cooked well. The egg was super flavorful, though the yolk was cooked just a tad more solid that I like. The pork was incredibly thin but flavorful, with a similar marinade to the egg. We also ordered the negipon karaage which is one of my favorites. So juicy, flavorful, and perfectly tender. The green onion and mayo are a perfect pairing with the crispy chicken! Menya ultra is still a solid place for tonkotsu ramen in San Diego, and I am glad I got to try out their UTC location!

Menya Ultra at UTC La Jolla is a great addition to the burgeoning food scene at the mall. The convenience of this location was great for a quick lunch. With seating outside and inside, the menu is simple with their signature ramens and sides. This visit I went with the highly recommended Ajitama Tonkotsu Ramen and a side of Nagoya style 3 piece fried chicken Karaage. The fried chicken was well battered with a good crunched served hot and juicy. Each piece was a good portion and dressed with a sweet sauce glaze with black pepper. Highly recommend getting this side as a good appetizer. When I think ramen I automatically go to a good tonkotsu and Menya Ultra's signature is the Ajitama Tonkotsu ramen a delicious bowl of a creamy pork broth, fresh noodles, boiled egg, green onions and a slice of pork chashu. This salty creamy broth with its thickness fills you up quickly. I was definitely satisfied with my meal and will definitely come back when at UTC mall.

food: spicy miso (8/10) - rich and comforting with a solid depth of miso flavor. the spice blends in better as you stir it through the broth because it's pretty powdery and overpowering in the broth. the portion size is decent and it doesn't taste overly salty. tantanmen (8/10) - nicely balanced with a bit of spice that adds flavor without overpowering the dish. you can customize the spice level with the ramen here though. it comes with a generous amount of minced pork and vegetables chasu (8/10) flavorful with a slightly smoky seared taste. it also came out as a thicker cut than expected making it satisfying though it does lean toward the fattier side service: friendly helpful and efficient throughout the visit ambiance: cozy and inviting with comic style artwork on the walls the space has a relaxed casual vibe with subtle Japanese decor. it is on the smaller side but well kept and comfortable

Yumm I love menya ultra! I have visited their Mira Mesa location a bunch but I visited this location with my family since we were at the mall. We visited on a Tuesday night and it was empty. Small shop, clean and lots of sauces for self serve. It is a more casual dining experience compared to the MM location, good for a quick meal at the mall. I ordered a regular tonkatsu with an egg. Sooo delicious, same quality as the other locations. I'd visit again!

The manga walls are a cool touch and having counter service for ramen is a nice option. I personally feel there is a lot of competition in the ramen dining space and it felt a bit uninspired. Nothing bad but it just didn't stand out! My main gripe is that the ramen does not come with the usual fixings. You either sacrifice chasu slices, egg, or other accoutrements (or pay ala carte) I got the 5 slices of chasu tonkotsu ramen - the meat WAS tasty and very umami but overall I felt like something was missing. In a perfect world a dish has to succeed as a whole and be more than a sum of its parts and I'm not sure Menya accomplished that!

Came on a weekday lunch and it was great! Plenty of seating as they have indoor and outdoor seating. Plenty of parking as it is located at UTC. Great service. Clean restaurant. All the food looked super yummy too. Would definitely come back!

Only one slice of pork in a $20 bowl of ramen is crazy

Food, service and sauces were great, one piece of pork in a $20 bowl of ramen is wild :(

Huge portions, but super super fatty and rich broth. It was good, but it was a lot heavier than I anticipated. It was nice they had a condiments bar with garlic and ginger-- cause man, the ramen really needed those condiments to balance that richness. I got the one that came with a meat cutlet too, and whoa, it honestly should've been a ramen bowl shared with a friend! The char sui was okay. Broth was pretty salty as well. Place was clean. You order at the front, pay and seat yourself. Staff was friendly. You also self-serve drinks/water too. Definitely come on an empty stomach.

With UTC's parking garage, this is a convenient option for ramen. Order at the counter, take your seat and be served within minutes. The ramen is pretty standard in my mind, the noodles a little more chewy than some places. I don't have the most discerning palate when it comes to ramen, but the broth was flavorful and there was plenty of veg and meat in the bowl, so I was content.

    Basic Tonkotsu ramen, it's great!

I got the low sodium version which I initially thought was a little bland, but it's actually the perfect saltiness when enjoyed with the broth. I might ask for some pepper or chili oil next time. Service was excellent!

Im at repeat customer. Service is always good and friendly. The Ramen ruins pretty much any other ramen you will try. This is one of the Final Bosses of Ramen. Any variant is good. Get the egg and get the clbraised chashu if its available. Then relax in a chill and fun environment.

Update: I did enjoy the karaage chicken over rice and the fact that they had all these different sauces on the side that you could help yourself with basically there is a mix of self serve, and service that is really indicative of the sit down Ramen type of spot. This is trying to be. I updated my review because my kids did really enjoy their Ramen. It did taste salty for me and I would say the overall flavor of the broth was rich. That many would say they enjoyed that type, but for me a lighter broth would just be preferable. They give plenty of noodles and the service was attentive at 5pm today. I honestly returned because I had a gift card but I'm glad I did try it again because it is a four out of 5 Star place.

A normal meal. A casual San Diego ramen situation. Incorrect. What actually happened was that my child experienced a culinary event so powerful it rearranged her internal belief system. She took one bite and immediately declared it her "favorite meal ever" and "the best sushi on earth," which is impressive because those are two separate categories of food, but honestly I respect the conviction. At that moment, she became a tiny ramen prophet. A noodle evangelist. A sushi sommelier of chaos. I was no longer her father. I was merely the adult with a wallet and transportation. The ramen was fantastic. The sushi was fresh. The whole place had that magical "we actually care about what we are doing" energy, which is increasingly rare in a world held together by parking apps and spiritual fatigue. Then, as if the first visit had not already altered the timeline, my daughter made me go back the next day. Not requested. Not suggested. Made. There was no negotiation. She had tasted the mountain and demanded we return to the temple. So we did. And it was still excellent. BESHOCK is now officially part of our family lore. Somewhere between "remember that time we saw the ocean" and "remember when your daughter discovered ramen and briefly became a food critic possessed by a joyful sea dragon." Highly recommend. Bring your children only if you are emotionally prepared for them to ask to come back immediately.

Then we waited another 10 minutes for the gyozas, followed by another 10 minute wait between each of the next two dishes. Meanwhile, we could see staff talking and laughing by the bar while customers were waiting. Not once did our server acknowledge the wait time, apologize, or even check in with us about it. By the time our main entrée finally came out, we had already been there for about an hour and a half and it was 12:30 AM, with the restaurant about to close. We were so tired and hungry that we just asked for a to go box, threw the entrée in, and left. The food may have been good, but unfortunately, the service completely ruined the experience. The lack of communication and acknowledgment of the incredibly long wait was especially disappointing.

After finishing the entertaining and riveting apocalyptic movie, we weren't sure where we were going to eat for dinner because our first restaurant choice Ramen Nagi closed at 9pm. My son's pahtner mentioned that the Ramen Nagi in San Jose had a last seating of 9pm, so we walked briskly to the restaurant and I learned that as long as you're in line before the closing time of 9pm, you'll get served. Three of the four members in our party talked glowingly about Ramen Nagi, so I was excited to grub here for the first time. After eating their Original King ramen, the chicken karaage, the gyoza, and receiving quality customer service, I wholeheartedly concur with my family's positive reviews and understand now why the restaurant was packed at closing time and why Ramen Nagi is highly rated with 4.4 stars and 738 reviews. Ramen Nagi is located within the shops of the University Towne Center (UTC) La Jolla mall. The restaurant is located towards the west end of the mall where you'll find Raised by Wolves, new spot Chef Fei, it's across from Katsuya Ko and Alo, and it's next door to Van Leeuwen Ice Cream. Parking is paid parking at the mall, but the first hour is free. There's bright indoor seating and minimally lit umbrella covered outdoor seating. Being the foodie that I am, I prefer indoor seating, so that the lighting would be conducive to seeing the food and taking pics. Look for the banners with Japanese verbiage and a large red lantern in front of Ramen Nagi. Adjacent to the outdoor seating, there's a water feature that gives off relaxing vibes. The customer service from all of the staff we interacted with was outstanding and is probably why it's such a popular eatery. To be completely transparent, I'm not a fan of having to make my food selections on the provided sheet of paper while waiting in line. I don't know if that's normal SOP and maybe it was because we were one of the last diners and they just wanted to speed along the process. I'd rather take my time, peruse their menu, and order what I desire. Luckily for me, my Pahtner had eaten at Ramen Nagi, so I just trusted her choices with a personalized deviation. What I ordered, through my wife's recommendations, was the following: Original King ramen flavor, normal strength of salt, normal richness in oil, normal garlic, chashu pork, green onions for vegetable, #4 for my spiciness, normal thin noodles, tamago (egg), and for appetizers, chicken karaage and gyoza. I felt rushed to pick my selections. For my spice level, #4 made me sweat, so be cautious when choosing spiciness unless you can handle a lot of spice. I really enjoyed the taste of the broth and the components I chose, but the chashu was not as tender as I would have liked. The ramen was a satisfying bowl that I consumed delightfully. Make sure to order both the chicken karaage and gyoza. The karaage was succulent, tasty, and would have eaten well with white rice. The gyoza was unique as it came out not looking like the dumplings I'm accustomed to. It came out flat and covered in a crunchy texture. That too was memorable and yummy. My family and I had quality time enjoying The Dog Stars and dining at Ramen Nagi. I understand now why my family recommended eating here and now I recommend everyone try out this delish ramen restaurant.

The broth had that long-simmered pork bone depth without being overly heavy, and the garlic oil gave it a smoky, almost umami-bomb finish plus a touch of seafood with that 燻 and 鮮. We also grabbed an extra chashu plate on the side which melts in our mouth, lightly charred at the edges. The space has a fun, energetic izakaya vibe exposed brick, big fabric noren banners hanging from the ceiling (the "Universal Noodle Creator" branding is a nice touch), and an open kitchen where you can watch the cooks in action. It gets loud and communal, which made for a lively date night rather than a quiet one good to know going in. Service was quick, water and shichimi/pepper grinders were on the table, and the seating (bench-style, close quarters) has the casual ramen-shop energy. It's just missing Naruto walking into this shop. If you like bold, funky, garlicky tonkotsu broths, this is a must-try. Will be back for the other flavors on the wall menu. This place doesn't do take out but takes your order as you wait in line. You can order the takeout after you sit and pack the food yourself.
