Broken rice with grilled pork chop and tried egg

Who knew there would be a banger pho place in Oakville? We came for a very late lunch. There were a few tables of just 1 which was a sign that it's so good you'll make your way here to eat alone. When you walk in, you're immediately in the seating area. You can head to the back where the host counter/bar area is. We had our pick of the seats and because it was freezing, we chose to sit closer to the back of the restaurant. A lot of other customers also opted to sit in the same area. There's also a TV in the back with the hottest CP24 news so there's a lot back there. The menu had a good mix of dishes like soup, rice, and noodle dishes. They do some Thai and Chinese items as well. I went with a small pho tai. I was so happy with how good the broth was! Tons of flavour, even after I added in the bean sprouts which I always find dilutes the soup a little. At the end of a great meal, you have to pay up at the counter and it is cash only.

Just a small update, we had takeout last night and ordered the same stuff, except instead fresh rolls we got a seafood pho. Everything was just as delicious as before!

My rating is 4.5 stars. My good friend, who is also my colleague, lives in Hamilton. I'm in Markham. We hadn't seen each other since last September. We decided that it was time to get together safely. Oakville is becoming a special town for us. When we do meet roughly halfway distance-wise, it's here. We both like it. She will be moving out of Hamilton soon and has Oakville on her mind. I hope she does, too. I am discovering how cool it is. We had a late lunch date two Saturdays ago at 2:30 pm at Pho Mama. We love pho. Many of our past lunches on Fridays when we were in the office were at a local pho place. She was running late, so our time got pushed to 2:45 pm. It happens. We met just in front of Pho Mama after we had parked in the plaza. There was plenty of parking. I finally figured out where Boon Burger is after all these years! We both haven't dined in an eatery (the actual restaurant, and not a tented or patio area) since the pandemic started. For the germaphobe (friend) and a person who hasn't been comfortable with dining in these days (me), we both bit the bullet and headed inside. There was a couple eating when we walked in. The male staffer signalled whether we needed a table for two by doing a peace sign. Yes! He had us eat in a cozy corner, completely away from everyone. We felt safe and comfortable. The menu is extensive. It's Vietnamese and Thai fare. I went with the vermicelli (bun), and selected grilled chicken and pork as my protein. My friend asked for suggestions. She actually ordered my usual item when I'm not having vermicelli. She got rare beef and beef ball pho. She got a large. The largest size is an XL. To start, we got the pork deep-fried spring rolls. They came first. My rating would have been perfect without having these spring rolls. They needed to have a crispier exterior. I felt like they were more on the mushy side. Otherwise, the flavour and dipping sauce were on point. The portions are huge here! I brought my appetite, thankfully. My vermicelli was mighty filling. The grilled pork and chicken were so flavourful. The crispy pork skin was the highlight of my eating experience. Excellent! The grilled pork and chicken were tender and downright yummy. I loved the veggies and vermicelli. They were done perfectly. Mix everything with the sauce that comes with the dish and I was a happy camper. My friend enjoyed her pho. The large was huge! It looked large for a large, and not a medium that you thought was marketed as a large. True to size, folks! The rare beef was tender and the beef balls were so huge that they were cut in half. She couldn't finish it all, but loved it so much that she got it packed up. We spent over two hours eating, laughing, and catching up. She starts her workday at 7 am thanks to working with a team in India. I am fortunate that I only attend a meeting at 7 am once a month, but I tend to start work just after 8 am. I only see and chat with her online during our weekly team meeting, so it was great seeing each other in person for a change! Staff were so nice. They catered to getting a fork for my friend and little plates for our spring rolls. I paid for our lunch at the counter and let them know that their food was yummy. I paid using a debit card. Tap and done. We both needed to use the restroom before we hit the road. There are two single stalls. The one that I went to was clean. I liked the cactus arrangement on the sink. I felt so safe and comfortable during my first pandemic dine-in experience. We lucked out, for we are in a lockdown-emergency-brake situation in Ontario right now. I am grateful that we timed our outing perfectly. Other than our mushier-than-usual spring rolls, the food is top notch here. I'd come back to give the pho a try next. (139)

FOOD: We had come here on a Saturday night at around 6:30 pm for dinner as we were in the area, and had noticed that there were many excellent reviews for this restaurant. I had started off with an appetizer, settling on the Pork Spring Roll (Cha Gio; $5.25), which was quite delicious; crisped to perfection, and with a large amount of pork and other well-prepared items within the roll itself. I loved how large it was, and that it was cut into many pieces, making it easier to dip into the sauce that was given. It definitely set the tone for the remaining food items that were to come! Next, I had settled on the Beef Pad Thai (Pad Thai Bo; $11.99), which included a large helping of noodles, with a variety of bean sprouts, peppers, peanuts, and large beef pieces. This was one of the largest pad thai dishes I had ever eaten, and loved how the dish stayed hot (temperature-wise) for a long-time after it was served to me. I also loved the large amount of peanuts that were given on the side of the dish, which I gladly spread around the noodles. Placing the oyster sauce on the noodles made them taste even better, leaving a delicious taste in my mouth for hours afterwards. There was so much of the pad thai that I had to take it home, which was great as we had leftovers for the next day. The flavours all mixed-well in the dish, along with the large amount of vegetables, beef, and peanuts that were given; definitely a great pad thai dish! My husband had settled on the Large Pho Beef Noodle Soup (Nam Gan Bo Vien; $10.50), which he found to be scrumptious as well! ATMOSPHERE: We noticed that this restaurant was a tad on the small side, as the tables were very close together, and a draft from the door would come into the restaurant each time someone used the door. We would have liked if there was more room to get in-between the chairs and tables, as we had our toddler son with us, and it was difficult to manoeuvre around the restaurant safely. We were sitting at a table near the serving counter at the back, which was better for privacy however, we were sitting beside a large table that had a variety of food items on it, which we figured was for a large take-out order. We did find it a bit strange that the food was sitting there in the open for a long period of time however, we didn't think anything of it, and just continued to enjoy our meal. SERVICE: When we had come into the restaurant, we were greeted by a younger gentleman, that brought us to our table. We then had to get our own high-chair which we found to be a bit strange however, we noticed that the staff were busy, and didn't want to bother them any further than necessary. We were given our dishes quite quickly, and the server did come and refill my water glass after I had asked for more water, along with bringing some cutlery for myself and my son. The server then asked at the end of our stay how the meal was, and seemed excited when we had told him that it was delicious considering it was our first visit. COST: 1 Pork Spring Roll (Cha Gio): $5.25 + 1 Beef Pad Thai (Pad Thai Bo): $11.99 + 1 Large Pho Beef Noodle Soup (Nam Gan Bo Vien): $10.50 - $27.74 + Tax = $31.35 WOULD YOU RETURN? We loved how delicious the food tasted, and the large portion sizes, along with the excellent prices for the food we had received. We did find the restaurant a bit uncomfortable however, that wouldn't deter us from returning again!

Ordering Pho was different at first but when I thought about it it made perfect sense. Instead of sifting trough a list to find what you want, you pick 3 toppings. So genius! The broth was delicious and not flavoured with salt and msg. The spices and flavours really shine through. In addition you get pickled garlic, chilli garlic sauce & pickled peppers which are fire. Ordering the xtra large you definitely get ur $'s worth when it comes to size and noodles as well as toppings It's a bit out of our way but it's definitely worth it. Our new fave when we go out to Oakville.

Visited there on Jan 1st 2020. I was actually really glad that they were open on that day. Pho was good. We ordered a large and i think it was a good portion. Vermicelli was a bit disappointment because of chicken. Chicken was dry but other than that, it was okay.. I would go back for their pho.

We've been craving pho and remembered a new pho place that opened in the area and decided to give them a try. They were opened on Canada Day so it was perfect! We ordered an order or shrimp roll, bun bo hue (bbh) and a pho with rare beef, brisket & beef ball. We were pleasantly surprised with how delicious and flavourful the broth was! The bbh was incredibly spicy, packed with flavour and tons of meat. The pho was delicious and the broth didn't taste artificial. The shrimp rolls did not disappoint! It wasn't overloaded with too much veggies and it was super fresh! The service was great. Servers were attentive as we said no bean sprouts, no pork blood (in the bbh) and opted for rice noodle as opposed to bun noodles. They got everything right! Would definitely recommend Pho Mama to anyone in the Oakville area and would return!

Grilled pork vermicelli with spring roll

This place is amazing - some of the best pho I've had in years. I'd been craving pho for a while, so a few weeks ago I went to another place in Oakville that had been around for a while and it kind of disappointed. So I was hoping that Pho Mama lived up to the reviews, and it did. We ordered takeout and when we arrived to pick up our food we were greeted by friendly staff who already had our food ready and waiting. I loved that you can "make your own pho", meaning that you choose what three toppings you want. It's not like some pho places where there are a million options, each with a different combination of things. This is simple - you just choose what you want in it. We ordered a large Pho with beef brisket and two portions of lightly fat beef. The broth was really flavourful and not bland or artificial tasting, and they didn't skimp out on the amount or quality of the toppings as well. Because we ordered takeout, the beef/broth/noodles/bean sprouts came separately. You just put it all together when you get home. We also ordered the bbq pork vermicelli with spring roll. The bbq pork was so full of flavour and nicely cooked, and the spring roll was perfectly crispy and tasty as well. The portion size was also pretty good for takeout. The two dishes were enough to feed the two of us, and it came out to around $20 + tax.

One of my new go to's for Pho. I like the pho concept they have here. You pick what goes into your pho. No preset pho dishes. I load mine up with lightly fat beef. So delicious. You have the standard meat selection and the option of choosing 3 meats. There are 3 sizes to the pho. Sm, Lg and XL. No in between.

They were quite busy with takeout orders which I took as a good sign. We ordered the Beef Sirloin Noodles level spicy and numb(4/5), Breaded Shrimp (5/5) Seafood Fried Rice (4/5) and Lamb Skewers (4/5). Beef Sirloin Noodles were delicious. The broth itself was not overly salty compared to other places we've been to. I enjoyed the addition of peanuts to this dish for that extra crunchy texture and nutty taste. The noodles were cooked perfectly. They were bouncy and chewy. The beef itself was good. Some were a tad bit chewy. I wish there was more bok choy. We'd also opt for extra spicy and extra numb next time. Breaded Shrimp was enjoyable. You can't go wrong with this dish. It was crispy, and the batter to shrimp ratio was decent. Seafood Fried Rice was good as well. Again, we liked how it wasn't overly salty. We were able to sense the taste of the seafood. I wish they added more scallops since we only got two pieces in the whole dish. Lamb Skewers were satisfying flavour-wise. We really liked the seasoning on them. It was on the chewier side but it was manageable. We'd like to try their other skewer options next time. Overall, such a good spot for affordable and delicious food. I'm glad my family recommended this place. I'd like to point out that a customer was being problematically entitled and rude yet the female server stayed professional. I thought she handled the situation quite calmly which I wanna commend her for. P.S. The restaurant has a sign on their door saying not to bring pets inside. Spiced dry lettuce root was a bit too oily and needed more salt but still tasted good. Spicy beef noodle was also really nice as well but felt like the spices were bit heavier than years ago. Who doesn't love finding somewhat hidden gem of a place?…read more This location is unassumedly in a strip mall with a music store and pet care business and was such a delight to enjoy. The menu is pretty straight forward but so many options with Taiwanese and Chinese street food type options and fresh noodle and rice dishes. We tried the cuttlefish ball and sweet and sour cucumber salad eppetizers, the original noodle dish with sauce on the side, non vegetarian street noodle choice and the braised pork on rice dish that comes with optional seaweed soup on the side. Everything was tasty, but the seaweed soup was the least favourite for our table. Cuttlefish balls were crispy on the outside, juicy and bouncy on the inside with a sliight sweetness. The Cucumber salad used black vinegar as the base and were not too strong or punchy but provided a nice crisp relief with the other dishes. The egg noodles were just great. Firm and chewy and did I mentioned never ending?? If you need more noodles to gobble up whatever sauce or broth you order just ask! And a bowl will quickly appear at your table, included in your price. The flatter egg noodle was very light and the rounder egg pasta more chewy, both were delicious and held on to the sauces perfectly. The braised tea/soya egg were hard boiled and flavourful and this rice dish was very kid friendly too, a great way to introduce kiddos to the menu. Service was quick and friendly and well worth a detour to visit.

You don't pay but you need to put your order through here. They don't come to your table. It was confusing because my friend and I were only ordering for ourselves on our own phones, which made sense to us. However, because I put my order through first, it only accepted mine. We were waiting like 10 mins after my order came for my friend's order. Turns out hers didn't even go through! You need to order for the whole table on one phone. Anyways, she got her order 5 mins after adding onto my order. We both ordered Mild spice, mild numbing with egg noodles. This was just the right amount of spice for me. They actually give you a lot of noodles. I couldn't even finish it. They're super bouncy and have a great chewy texture. The beef brisket was tender and there was a lot of it. If you don't like fat or can't handle some fat, don't get this. But I like fat and this was delicious and flavourful. Taste like a classic Chinese beef brisket. I appreciated the cilantro. It gave it a different depth of flavour with each bite. The broth was perfect, especially on a cold winters day. Not sure I would return but it was an ok meal and a decent amount.

I saw the quick service Noodlebox and stopped in. The signs on the window promised fresh, customizeable, wok-fired Asian-inspired noodles, rice, and salads. That sounded perfect for a healthy-ish meal. Parking was easy, and we were the only customers in the restaurant at around 1 pm. That should've been a major clue that this wasn't going to be the best meal. Nobody seemed to be working, and we stood at the counter for what felt like forever. It didn't really matter because the menu is so large and confusing, and we needed the extra time to decide what to order. Yes, you can customize everything, from the protein, veggies, sauces, spice level, and they do offer lots of vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free options which is genuinely great. The problem is that the food just doesn't deliver. The flavors we tried were bland and unexciting, like someone described "Asian-inspired" dishes to the kitchen from memory. The menu seriously over promises and under delivers, big time. They do have spicy options, which my husband ordered because he likes super flavorful food. He was so disappointed because the higher heat levels barely registered. If you're expecting real kick, you're going to be disappointed. I guess this is classified as "spicy" by Canadian standards. The noodle quality also seems wildly inconsistent. His bowl was fine, while mine felt overcooked and mushy. The ingredients also felt cheap, which doesn't help when you're paying premium prices for fast-casual food. Speaking of prices: brace yourself. It's easy to hit well over $20 per person, and adding protein is almost insulting. You'll get a few tiny, smaller-than-bite-sized pieces of chicken or meat scattered around like an afterthought. For that price, it shouldn't feel like a garnish. My advice is to skip the proteins because it's nonexistent (the veggies are more plentiful, which I preferred anyway). Service and timing didn't help either. Because everything is cooked fresh, wait times can be long. We waited over 30 minutes to get our noodle boxes, which was a real pain since we were trying to make good time and get back on the road. Fresh food is great, but slow and inconsistent service makes it hard to justify this as a quick and convenient stop. I got the Pad Thai which was borderline inedible. It's not authentic in any sense of the word and actually tasted bad. My hubby's Singapore cashew curry chicken box wasn't any better. We both left sorely disappointed. Overall, Noodlebox feels like a Canadian chain that's coasting on its reputation. It's such a cool concept, but we found it to be overpriced, inconsistent, and underwhelming. If you're hungry and in a rush, this is probably not the place you're looking for.

Bonus point: they have high chair unlike one of the other locations I went to. The food came out really quickly which was perfect as we were all starving. Noodle was cooked to perfection and the soup had a nice flavour. This is a great meal for a rainy day. The only problem we had was the menu price for extra noodle was not matching the charged price. Apparently the menu had not been updated. It was minor, just a dollar difference so we didn't make a big fuss about it. I wish they would have honoured the menu price though.

I was so happy Gols noodles opened up near me in Oakville!…read more For the first 6 months when they opened there were no bbq items on the menu. Now they finally have it available. The restaurant is clean and modern. I would say the service is a bit slow. They are extremely busy taking orders via takeout and uber eats that they neglect the people dining in. There are 2 people running around and they looked extremely stressed. I took out one star for the service. However food wise it's top notch! I came upon Gol's in Waterloo and it was so good. Happy to say the food is just as fantastic at this new location. We shared this giant bowl of noodle soup which is only $1 more going from a small to large. It's huge and you and you should share it with someone and get some bbq items too. You can choose from the thickness of the homemade hand pull noodles. The noodles are made in house! The bbq items are so amazing!! It's flavoured with the northern china spices. I loved all the items. My fav are the lamb skewers and squid! Will definitely come back!
