I was craving pho for lunch, and despite the not-very-amaze rating on Yelp, gave this place a try. I wasn't disappointed. Oddly shaped like a Swiss chalet with a daringly steep roof, this place looks like it has been around for a while, but in a good way. The first thing I noticed was how fast the order arrived: just a few minutes and the piping hot bowl of pho was placed in front of me. The second thing I noticed is that the plate with basil and sprouts also contained slices of green chili pepper, a nice, welcome touch I've rarely (never?) seen at pho places in NYC. But how about the pho? My Pho Dac Biet #1 was very satisfying. The broth is excellent full of flavor and yet light, certainly one of the best I've ever had. The thin noodles were nicely chewy and wouldn't break when picked up with the chopsticks. The meat cuts were not the most flavorful I've ever had but decent. I wish there were more pieces of tripe, which always add some nice texture. My only complaint is the price: at $7.98 for a small bowl, this pho is not cheap, but I would certainly come back for mo' pho and some other items on the menu. 3.5 stars, rounded up to 4 because the broth is really excellent. read more

Enjoyed an inexpensive lunch today. I ordered a grilled pork and fried roll lunch over vermacelli noodles. The waitress said she could make any combination so I ordered grilled chicken with it which ended up an extra $2 but it was worth it. Only problem is that the meat were cooked previously and were as cold as my salad. The meat were in big pieces so make sure you ask for a knife. I also ordered a Thai iced tea with boba. My hubby makes Thai tea which is more flavorful and tastes better. My other friends had a pho combo which included a drink for about $12 and they were really happy! read more

Pho Nam, like its name suggests, is a place for rice noodle, with broth or not. Their Vietnamese pork dry noodle bowls (bún) are offered in a wide variations and I got the #53 grilled pork and fried egg roll and it's quite tasty. A friend got the tomato-based beef stew, which is my second choice and it looked fabulous. She gave me a taste and the broth was really flavorful - rich and unctuous without being overly greasy. The stew pairs well with a french roll/baguette or rice noodles. If you are looking for tasty Vietnamese rice plates, Pho Nam is definitely not the place as their rice plate options are limited and don't seem very popular. read more

I ate lunch here with a few of my coworkers. I've kept my eye on this place for awhile ever since I went to try out the Adamson's French Dip in the same plaza; in addition, I could expand my pho list. The decor looked similar to the Pho Nam in Milpitas but this place seemed a little bigger. The building looked weird and I'm sure it used to be some other restaurant. We sat down and looked at the menu. Within a minute or two, a waiter came to take our order. It's a good thing we all know what we wanted because I was starving! I didn't pay attention because I was busy checking in at this place on my Yelp app for my Motorola Droid. lol! The pho tasted exactly like how I remembered the pho at Pho Nam in Milpitas tasted like. Did a pick up order. Saw some people eating inside when I went to get it but it was mainly empty. When I said I was going to pay by card, they said cash only. I told them I asked on the phone and was told card was fine. I did not like them trying to pull a fast one on me and rejecting credit card when they clearly said they accepted it. To start off, I've been to this establishment for many years. It's a convenient way to get a quick and cheap meal. The service is usually snappy, and the food comes out in minutes. Nothing to complain about. I haven't had a problem with this place until today. I typically order the Pho Special (#1 on the menu), with their Vietnamese coffee. What I didn't order, was a side of 8 human hairs on the tendon inside my soup. The tendon was on the very top of my bowl, making the hairs pretty obvious. Did someone in the kitchen just get a haircut? Someone in the back shave their eyebrows? I pulled the tendon out to snap a better picture. I was surprised that none of the servers saw all the hairs on my food before serving me. Sure they were pretty short, but there were many on top. Average inexpensive pho. We were in the area looking for a place for some pho, and stumbled across this restaurant. We were seated immediately. The food came out fast. My bf had ordered a large pho tai and added beef balls. I ordered steak, flank, tendon. (No.7) They had forgotten the beef balls for his pho, but brought it out later in a small bowl w/ with some broth; apologizing. Immediately when the pho came, we noticed something off about the soup/broth. It was greasy looking, like layer of fat or grease on top. We can taste the saltiness of the broth. We assumed there's MSG in the soup. We didn't ask, but we've eaten so much pho before that it tasted like it. I kept having to drink water and wash it down. The broth was getting me dehydrated. Bummer... we tried to avoid drinking the soup. The egg rolls were good though. Service was fast and servers were nice. Portions were good. A large was about the the same bowl as the small, just more noodles. There's only two sizes to choose from. We ordered an appetizer, a large, and a small pho for about $25... again, cheap but greasy. On this cold November evening, I was getting over a cold, and wanted something close by to warm me up, and decided to head over to Pho Nam, one of a string of Vietnamese noodle soup restaurants in the area. We don't go to Pho Nam very often, as we have so many restaurants to go to using discount coupons, and Pho Nam never has a discount coupon. However, even my tight fisted ex-wife from Hong Kong, who never went anywhere without a coupon, relented on this one, as Pho Nam is about the least expensive sit down restaurant you can go to , outside of fast food restaurants. Pho Nam is located in a building with a very steep roof, and A shaped on the end. Quick, which fast food restaurant is A shaped on the end! Der Wienersnitzel! (whoops, almost mispelled the second n with an h!) That was the restaurant located here 20 years ago! We go on in, and there is a sign on the door stating 'cash only'. Not sure what they do, when the customer has insufficient cash -wash dishes, like in the Charlie Chaplin movies!? The wife orders the large $7.75 seafood pho, and I order the large $7.85 Beef Stew over rice, with an order of $2.85 spring rolls. Actually there is no need for the appetizer, as the dishes come all at once in about 4 minutes! I guess the cook still thinks he's at Der Wienersnitzel! That's fast for a hot dish! Vietnamese spring rolls are not my favorite, but these filled with rice and vegetables are accompanied by some dipping sauce with real kick! The wife's dish comes with rice noodles,green vegetables, 4 shrimp, 5 shrimp balls, several slices of squid, and several pieces of artificial crab -the white fish with the artificial red and white streak on the top. The dish is delicious, with a fish broth flavor and not too much grease floating on the top., and could serve 2 adults, if they weren't as hungry as we were! My beef stew dish looks like a soup, until I dip my soup spoon into the brown soup, and hit two large 4" x 1" x 1" chunks of beef. I kid you not, this is the mother of all beef stew soups! A bit on the greasy side, with a orange slime on the sides, but definitely a dish for 2 adults, even us 2 hungry adults! We get out of there for $20 after tax, before tip, and leave the cash at the front counter. Meanwhile, there are two young Asian girls emptying their purses at the counter, trying to get those last coins. This is the twilight zone Pho restaurant. Seriously. First off, the building is crazy. It's shaped kinda like an Alpine house with huge windows everywhere. Inside it looks like some 70's kickback, complete with neon striping down the walls. And it's clean... really clean. That almost put me off completely but before I could change my mind, a server quickly and politely whisk us off to a table. Yes, I said politely. I'm getting more suspicious! This was followed by extremely polite ordering, from menus that were laid out easy enough for even a Pho-virgin consumer (and veterans like me). To test them, I even ordered extra cilantro, lemons for my water and a straw. All of them were delivered promptly, with a smile.
