Came back to Pho Nguyen with my girlfriend to give their bun bo hue a try, and I've definitely got some updated thoughts after this visit. Honestly, this place might be my go-to spot for both pho and BBH in the Bay Area now. The bun bo hue really stood out this time--the broth was super rich and packed with flavor. You can tell it's been simmered properly, with that deep, savory base and just the right level of spice. The portion was solid too, with a good balance of noodles, meats, and toppings. I also tried the pho again (gf got no.10?), and it was just as impressive as I remembered--honestly, pretty much perfect. The broth was clean but still full-bodied, not greasy, and had that comforting depth that keeps you going back for more. The meats were tender, and everything tasted really fresh. After this visit, I'm officially updating my rating to 5 stars. Between the consistently high-quality broth, fresh ingredients, and overall execution, Pho Nguyen has really earned a top spot for me. This Saturday, I went with my boyfriend to eat rice plates and they hit the spot. Plenty of nuoc mam, pickled vegetables and a good ratio of meat to rice. The eggrolls were perfectly crispy and well filled and the pork chops were nice and tender. For 18.50, it was a fair price for how filling it was. Came for hot noodle soup during a cold day. One of my favorites is their #32 My Tho Seafood and Pork Noodles. The broth is delicious. The seafood and ground pork go well together. The spring rolls are fresh and I like it that they give you separate little containers for sauce for each of us. The side of egg cake is tasty too. This place is clean with simple decor. Service is decent and food come out fast. The guy who works at the cashier is very friendly and nice. If you come during peak lunch hour, parking can be crazy and a bit challenging. I came here for the bún riêu, and it did not disappoint. The rice vermicelli noodle soup was filled with crab, pork blood, Vietnamese ham, shrimp, and tofu in a tomato based broth that was savory and well-balanced. This is one of the Vietnamese restaurants that serve Bun Rieu and they made a good tasty one . Bun Rieu is a noodle soup in Tomato base broth with crab and shrimp paste . It also has pork blood ( optional) , slice of pork ham , pork meatballs, prawn , tofu , fresh tomatoes, etc . The shedded cabbage and bean sprouts are on the side for you to add to the boiling hot soup . Pho Nguyen made their Bun Rieu so tasty and the broth are rich in flavors. The size is enormous. I could only finish half and take half home . The crab and shrimp paste ( with eggs scrambled) are so delicious and they gave me three big chunks of it ! I tried other dishes like grilled steak and tomato rice , lemon grass pork chop , crispy spring rolls, beef pho , etc . Came here for lunch last Wednesday a little after noon. They're quite busy but we didn't have to wait for a table. Service was friendly and the food came out fast and hot. I was craving for bun rieu and saw a couple of reviews claiming that Pho Nguyen had the best in the Bay Area. While I wouldn't say they're the best, their broth was indeed very flavorful with a strong tomato taste. Not sure if they used MSG, though. Plenty of fish sauce provided too and it came quickly. Service was efficient and it was a pretty typical setting - no frills but just fine. By far my favorite spot for com bo luc lac (shaken beef and rice) now!! The staff were very welcoming to us, including my small dog. It feels like your usual mom and pop viet restaurant with the casual decor and loud convos. FOOD: *Com bo luc lac: The meat was so fresh!!! None of that extra starch slurry or baking soda wash. They cook it so well that each cube is tender, medium rare-medium perfection. Can be eaten with or w/o the sauce on the side because it's that good! Honestly the only critique I have is that the edges of the rice dome or on the drier side, but it's fine if you add a spoonful of the green onion side soup! I appreciate how they chopped the lettuce into smaller pieces so it doesn't go to waste as a plating veggie. Also, it wasn't oily yay!! All of the vegetables were standard, but my other big takeaway? Portion size is amazing! Wait time for our 3 dishes and coffee was 15-20min and the place was busy! The pho and noodle soups are always very good; the broth isn't oily like most places, but I still get a side of nuoc beo for flavor. This place deserves way more than a 3.7 star rating on Yelp, imo. It's some of the best Vietnamese food in Milpitas and arguably in the surrounding area. I grew up with a Vietnamese heritage and it's hard to find a place that has good quality to portion to price and tastes authentic. It's also consistent. I usually order pick up and it's fast. My usual go to's are the egg rolls, spring rolls, white meat chicken pho and I get fresh rice noodles when I'm feeling sick (easily 2 meals), or combo vermicelli. The beef pho is also good and usually recommend eating in store for that. Not many places have good chicken pho and it's usually hard to decide what to order since everything is bomb! The portions and packaging including the veggie sides are well packaged and they give a lot compared to other Vietnamese spots (ex: Tay Ho in Santa Clara portions are terrible and similar price). Most of the entrees I feel like could be 2 meals even the vermicelli I have a hard time eating it all one sitting (at least when I get orders to go). Staff are also nice when entering and picking food up. My main wish is they could be open later and have a day off other than Tuesday! read more

It was also very clean inside and the tables were spaced optimally - often times, tables in other restaurants are too close for comfort. I ordered the Number 1, Pho Nguyen Dac Biet. The small bowl was more than enough for me. I would have liked more balance between the beef and the noodles. The broth was tastier than what I've had for other beef pho at other restaurants in the area, and there was an ample amount of side veggies. The food was good for its reasonable price. Came for lunch on a Friday afternoon. It was a full restaurant since it was lunch time but cleared up over time. Spacious spot! Convenient parking since it's located in a plaza. My boyfriend's been coming here for years and has been wanting to bring me to try. I ordered a large #5 pho (rare steak, flank, tripe) and I added beef balls. Great deal to be able to add beef balls for only $2 (versus having to pay $4 for a side of it). My bowl came out hot and that's how I like it! Big menu, bare bones dining area with actually a decent amount of seating, and no frills efficient and fast service (even the older family members over 50 years old can hustle). #asianeats Small Pho w/Rare Steak and Tendons ($15ish/4*) Solid, good broth that has good flavor even before you do anything to it. Lots of noodles so definitely a filling bowl. Tendons a little chewier than I prefer but still quite doable. Requested the steak slices to arrive on the side versus in the hot broth, which proves to be the move. Just wished they had fish sauce tableside that I could chili up to make the bites go boom. Oxtail Pho w/ Minced Steak ($18ish/4*) Massive bowl with serious meat, only high tier carnivores should apply. Lots of oxtails but the thin cut variety. I love oxtails but this was too al dente for me. Oxtails should be much more tender but maybe they do it this way, so it doesn't fall off the bone. There is a skill to that, that requires precise timing. But I had to do some serious biting and pulling here, some pieces were better than others. The minced steak was money and just love how it absorbs into the broth. Fried Rice ($11ish/2.5*) Got this for take-out once to use for work lunches and it was quite underwhelming. No wok hei or wok flavor and no chunks to make it pop. Sure there were chunks of chicken but it raised no brows. I think I've had better fried rices from steam table Chinese restos. Preserved Lemon w/ Club Soda ($5/4*) Solid drink that I'm pulled to get with a serious bowl of pho on a warmer day. It's literally 2 drinks as they give you a whole can of club soda and only half a can fits in the cup at a time. Just make sure you stir that drink aggressively each time you add the soda to pick up all the undiluted lemony goods on the bottom of the cup. Viet Iced Coffee ($5/4*) Solid on par with any pho joint in the 408. So nothing to rave about, just a standard yet decent bowl of pho. But it is repeatable if in this corner and for a pho joint I suppose they did their job. Props. read more
