I have been looking for at least a decent place to have pho in the area for literally months. When walked up to Pho Pasteur (its about 8:25p this will be important later) I was optimistic that I had found the right place. Unfortunately I can not tell you that the food is good or bad. When we entered the restaurant the waitress walk up and threw 2 menus onto the table nearest the door. My companion and I asked if we could sit at a table away from the door (it was 60 degrees, cold and windy). The waitress motioned to other tables in the restaurant with what I thought was a hint of attitude but I quickly disregarded it as mild irritation with the inconvenience. Once we took our seats I was impressed by the menu. Lots of selections all at very reasonable prices. I was pleasantly overwhelmed. Within 3 minutes of sitting the same waitress came back to take our order. I told her, "Not sure what I want yet can I have more 3 minutes." As I looked back down at my menu she shot back, "No, you order now." (Now before I go further let me tell you that I am using her exact words and not trying to make some disgusting joke about her accent) I told her, "I don't know what I want yet. I can't order now." "You order now, we close at 9" she tells me this as she angrily motions to the clock. As I lean over to look at the clock I ask her, "Are you telling me its to late to place an order." (the time is 8:29p) She then turns her back walks away and yells back across the restaurant "one minute". Needless to say me and my friend got up and left. read more

I don't usually come here for their pho, but I've had it a few times. It pretty good but I prefer their combo 45. That's the pork, 2 fried chicken, an egg roll and rice combo plate! The rice is nice and sticky, just the way I like it. The chicken has a crispy crunch to it when you bite into it but still juicy on the inside. The pork is cooked with a sauce that's sweet and they char it a little to give it some crunch. Not much to say about the egg roll other than it being awesome. They give you a side of soup which is the basically the broth they use in their pho. This meal is great for the carbs and protein after a day of working out hard at the gym. #1 pho place in my heart!!! No other pho comes close.. Rice plates are yummy as well but do consider that I grew up on this pho. I realized when I go to San Jose or LA, the seafood pho I get taste very different. They taste almost like udon broth where Pho pasteur's is clean chicken or seafood broth. I used to get the rare steak pho then when I got older, I became less fond of meat in general or meat in soups. But best seafood pho :) Always gotta have fried eggrolls. Pho Pasteur #2 used to be my favorite but their broth became really bland which could mean they watered down the broth or took out the msg.. I just come here now. When you order with the guy with glasses, he will likely to mess up your order he doesn't conprehend english very well no matter how hard I try to speak slow he just has the confused look and walks away and manages to bring the wrong things. ....and yes if he serves your soup, he does have a really long thumb nail that will kind of throw you off but it hasn't taken a dive in the soup yet but I do notice that all the time now and pray that he won't dunk his thumb in my soup when he brings the soups. My favorite place to get pho in Union City. Normally always has open seats when you enter, orders come out in less than 10 minutes and tastes great. Newly remodeled as well with tile floors. 50 cent difference between a medium and large. Prices are very reasonable. I don't think there's anything more than $10. Bring cash! So I've never actually had Pho before. I was taken here by a local Bay-a-nite because of how awesome Pho supposedly was, and she was not wrong. Considering I'm a traditional American white guy, I looked at the menu and thought, "Oh god what is this." So I had the person I was with pretty much order whatever she wanted for the both of us. I was in fear of the smell of cilantro when I walked in.. Because I am one of the people who despises cilantro, passionately. Even a whiff of it is a turn off, and eating it is like eating soap. But, thankfully, they were able to make one bowl of pho with cilantro and one bowl without for the two of us. It came in like 30 seconds (that's what she said). I wasn't expecting the food to get delivered that efficiently, but damn that was impressive. I was eating before I could even grab my fork and put my wallet and phone away. FOOD: MUCH YES. Jalapeño: Hotter than Gollum when he hit the lava in Mount Doom. Peach Smoothie: Exceptional. Exquisite. Astounding. Magnificent. Truly an awe inspiring creation of the modern era. Milk tea: It was milky and tea-y. That is sufficient. The only downside to this place is the that jalapeño was so hot, that my lips were burning the rest of the night. Eventually even my chapstick started to smell and taste like jalapeño so it was pointless; I kept putting more and more jalapeño on my lips and it kept getting worse. This place is busy no matter what time of day you go to. We order the pho soup with the beef and the seafood one and the chicken wings. The food came out super duper fast though like in 5 minutes. One warning though if you plan on going to the bathroom the floors are slippery and geasy and do not look at the kitchen as it looks very dirty.So get the chicken wings they are very good and crispy. read more

Based off the food and customer service, I would realistically put this place at 4 stars. However, the atmosphere drops it down to 3 and I'll explain why... Atmosphere: I walked in and was immediately met with stuffiness and the sweat of musky sweat in the air. It was actually pretty fucking gross. Yeah, doesn't make for a very appetising experience. On the flip side, the decor is what you would expect from a pho joint. For some reason, they all love the green colour scheme and long tables (why is decor for Vietnamese restaurants so predictable?!) Customer Service: Great! We were served by a slightly elderly gentleman, and he was very gracious and polite. Our pho also came out quickly, which made for an efficient meal. Food: Pretty tasty. For a perfect pho, it's all in the broth. The flavour needs to be basic and refreshing, yet sophisticated and complex with loads of herbs mingling together in harmony. Pho Pasteur definitely has it right. I ordered a simple Beef Brisket pho and it was absolutely delicious and reasonably priced as well. --- Overall, I couldn't fault this place. I've been here a couple times with my aunt and uncle. It's pretty much our go-to for a quick, warm meal. This place is alright. Ok pho. Good bargain, I got the #15 rare steak and tendon pho the most recent time I went and got at least 6-7 good chunks of tendon which is awesome. One thing I would like is hotter pho (temperature wise). Even in the middle summer, I expect my pho to be steaming hot. That way, it's warm until the very last bite. The fried chicken wasn't too spectacular. The flavor is a bit bland and the chicken is a bit overfried so the meat isn't as soft and juicy as it could have been. Overall, good place for a quick bite. It does get busy around lunch time though so come a bit early or be prepared to wait a bit. read more

Ah my favorite place to stop by for Pho! I always order the #22 medium & it always fills me up! This place is great! It's nearby my work place so if I really wanted (even with 45 min lunch periods) you could stop by, order, eat, & be back before your lunch ended! The reason being is that the Pho is served up only after waiting like 3-5 mins tops! The prices aren't bad either! Really cheap actually! Anyways, the portions are awesome, the staff is very attentive & I usually run into friends/family/Visigoths whenever I stop by here. The only thing that I suppose they could improve upon is the fact that it's cash only! I usually don't carry any cash on me these days so if you know that I'm heading to my ATM then you most likely know where I'll be headed afterwards haha. Overall the parking here is alright. I never have issues finding a close by spot. It typically gets real packed nowadays and they only have so many tables. So if you intend on dropping by at like 12-2ish you might have to wait an extra 5 mins for a seat if you're expecting to dine in unless of course you don't mind sitting with random people which isn't bad either as mist people I see here seem to be pretty friendly! I think I will always be a fan of this place. I used to come here in high school all the dang time with my little group of friends. The food is consistently what you would expect. Every time I come, I experience a wave of nostalgia, the jokes we used to crack, the times we sat after a day of starvation, breaking fast (this wasn't a good idea) and etc. So, personally, this place has sentimental value. This is a union city staple. From the crappy parking in an Asian parking lot where seafood city is to the best pho you will have in the east bay. I've been going here for years from when I'd be sick to when I'm hungover to just craving pho, this place is where to go. Service is good enough. It's gotten better over the years and the food comes out quick. The price is awesome for the quality food you get but the one downside to it is like any pho place you have to pay cash only. (Unless they changed that now) . It can get busy at times because how good the food is, but you can pass by and look as your looking for parking so if it is then you can make your decision from there. But if I were you it's worth it. The bun is good. The rice plates are fulfilling and they give you so much on the plate. The hubby and I needed to grab a quick bite before heading home after Back to School Night at AMS. We arrived about 8 p.m. on Wednesday, September 16th. We walk in and sat ourselves since there was no one around to greet or seat us. I even got our menus. After about 5 minutes, a random guy came to our table and without so much as a hello, took our order. They need to work on the table side manner. We ordered fried eggs rolls. They were your standard fare. You can't really go wrong with fried. We also ordered Pho. The broth was pretty good. Not overly salty as other places we've been to, but the meat was awful! It was grizzly and obviously very poor quality. I didn't get meat....I got fat. We usually frequent Nguyens' in Newark and only came to Pho Pasteur out of sheer convenience. I've gotten the pho and the rice plates and they are both decent. They have very little selection of rice places, maybe like 5 choices... It's always packed, but i'm not really sure why... i mean, it's decent but c'mon. The prices are reasonable, I ordered two rice plates (enough to feed 3 people!) at $7.99 each for a total about $17.00. The rice plate with pork chop and chicken wings comes with two huge deep fried chicken wings and a deep fried egg roll. This is the place to get your quick fix of pho. It's totally not your Slanted Doors kind of place. But it's cheap, fast, and food isn't bad. Just remember to bring CASH! And if not, there's a Rite Aid or liquor store 1 minute away. This place has been hit or miss for me. I absolutely LOVE pho and was looking for some place local near home for a quick pho fix. I've come here 3 times now and i could only get through half a small bowl of pho, bc of the aftertaste. The last time i went, i asked (to double check and make sure) what their broth is made of, and he said a combo of chicken beef and pork? I felt sick to my stomach. I told him I can't eat pork and if they had a diff option or vegetarian option. He said they could do just beef broth. I ordered chicken pho with "beef broth" and i still couldn't finish it bc of the gross aftertaste, so don't know whats up with that. I haven't had any of their other dishes like their vermicelli bowls, etc so i can't speak for the quality of food for those dishes. I just wasn't satisfied with the pho. This review is coming from someone who used to live right next to Little Saigon in San Jose, CA so I'm sorry for the 3-stars. Pho Pasteur is great, don't misunderstand. We eat here at least once a week, if not more. It's not as great as my other favorite pho spots in the Vietnamese-mecca of San Jose but good enough to come back to every week. (Well, they are after all the only pho place near our house now. Haha.) Broth is good and consistent. Portions are decent. Restaurant cleanliness is about average for a pho restaurant. Yes, the tables and chairs are sticky. You know, typical. I especially like that they cater to the Filipinos of Union City with their fried chicken. Lol. It is really tasty. =) read more

This has become our go-to pho spot. It can get really busy and we sometimes have to wait for a table, but it's always worth the wait. Pho #13 (rare steak and brisket) is my usual order and it never fails to be delicious. I love that they offer small, medium, and large pho sizes; you don't find that too often. They have a great meat-to-noodle ratio at Pho Pasteur in my opinion. I'm get disappointed when pho places give you too many noodles and not a lot of meat. My only complaint is that it is cash only, but that is pretty typical of pho places also. read more

This spot is 1 of the 3 places I visit for a bowl of noodle soup in Union City. Its quick. Its relatively clean (they remodeled last year) and the pho is goood. This is one of our most absolutely favorite Pho restaurants. The Pho is great anytime you're sick or just fiending for soup. The fried spring rolls are just so awesome. The broth is awesome and the sliced BBQ pork is great. Brian always order the won ton egg noodle soup with sliced BBQ pork which is always perfect for him when he's sick or just fiending for soup. I always order the pork and shrimp rice plates or the beef stew soup with egg noodles when I am feeling sick and need hot, tasty broth (although they do include a lot of tendon which I am definitely not a fan of!) but the broth and combination of egg noodles and a little bit of lime and cilantro and it's perfect! The Nuoc mam (sp?) is so perfect. Especially if you drown everything in it! Brian loves the shredded, pickled carrot and vegetables that they include as a side with your rice plate. I really used to love coming to this place. The food made it worth the 20 minute drive even though there's a bunch of pho places within a 5 minute radius of me. But the last time I came here it wasn't as good. I don't know what it was but I definitely wasn't as satisfied as I was in my previous visits. I decided to give it another chance and here I am sitting here today completely done with this place. The food still wasn't as good as before and I found a short hair floating in my soup. I know it's not mine because it's very thin and fine and I have long insanely thick hair. the lady did end up taking it off the bill so that was good but i really had to ask her to do it because she kept ignoring my request and just wanted to bring me another one. and she wasn't very nice about the situation either. For starters..... remember this is a CASH ONLY restaurant!!! And most of the time I come here there is usually a wait to be seated and sometimes the line is out the door. As for the food at the restaurant they do have a big selection to choose from which is a plus. I usually order the well done brisket and well done flank soup which I can never go wrong with. If I could give half stars, I would. Solid 3.5 star pho. It's not bad, and as some reviewers have noted, it's pho when you're craving it. I think what makes me round down to a 3 instead of up to a 4 is the broth. It's just ok. Definitely not bad, but not especially memorable either. If you're in the area and want pho, it's worth it. On an interesting note, there's one guy that brings out the pho bowls and he serves them with one hand. The impressive part is the grip he uses: four fingers under the bowl, and the TIP of his thumb at the rim of a very full bowl. I'm guessing he doesn't use the fat part of his thumb so that it doesn't end up in your broth. I've seen him do this with my extra large bowls, and the sheer strength and dexterity he demonstrates is actually quite the show. read more

This place was PACKED when I went, but we were seated promptly and our food came just as fast. Spring rolls, chicken wings, and a couple bowls of pho. Nothing too fancy, it was just okay. I like combination bowls and this didnt have much variety in it, but the size and what WAS in it was worth the price. The bathroom was old and dingy, kinda made me think twice.
