This is one of the nicer Vietnamese restaurants in Chinatown. When I say nicer, it isn't fancy or up scale, rather very clean and spacious. A lot of the other restaurants tend to be cramped and have questionable food safety. They also have an extensive menu that is far broader then most of the Vietnamese restaurants that I have gone to that seem to just focus on the basic classics. Their sweet and sour catfish soup is impressive and 2 to 4 people could share it easily. It is loaded with lots of goodies and a great broth. They have a lot of items on their menu that are meant for sharing, so it is perfect for family style dinning. Although green papaya salad sounds very basic for a Vietnamese restaurant, they really load up the Thai basil on it which really kicks up the fresh aspect of the dish. I wouldn't call it the best I ever had, but defiantly close to it. They have everything from mild to wild, so I think anyone would find something they would like there. It is also nice that they have a liquor license, so you can have a beer with your meal which I think perfect with this kind of food. This restaurant is in my rotation of vietnamese food. They have a large menu and although I usually eat Vietnamese noodles soups. Everything I ever ordered here was great! They have yummy pho, broth is delicious. I also love bahn cahn cua, Vietnamese crab soup udon. We also got their deconstructed banh mi before, the meat came on a hot plate with a side of warmed crunchy and soft French bread which was so good! Always wanted to come here cause a Vietnamese friend said it's his favorite restaurant, and my friends mom said it's hers. 1 star for food (portion and flavor), 1 star for cleanliness. Parking: metered street parking right outside. $3/hour as of beginning of 2022 Service: Definitely not my best experience with service. greeted and sat promptly upon entering. Got our order & food out quick, but that was it. No one checked back with us, my water never got refilled. I wouldn't mind if they were busy, but instead of tending to current customers, our server was busing/cleaning tables even though there was no one waiting and no line. Had to go to the counter to get my check because no one checked up. Food: very disappointed with the food. Portion and flavor was good. I got the #31 water spinach noodle soup. I was missing like half the toppings (pork hock, blood cake, tofu). Since no one checked up on us I really get a chance to complain and I felt like it just wasn't worth it. So good we ate here twice! Visiting Hawaii during a pandemic is rather difficult when it comes to dining options as you'd either have to make reservations wayyyy in advance or be prepared to for 2-hour long wait times. Although we did prepare and made some reservations we also had to deal with last minute schedule changes and finding a last minute eatery is a challenge. Pho Vietnam to the rescue! Walking around China Town and starving, we happened to come across this little gem. With our stomachs growling, we had a look at the EXTENSIVE menu full of authentic and rare dishes we felt like we were in Vietnamese food heaven! I was having such a difficult time picking a dish to order. Page after page the menu boasts some of the best VN dishes, with some items rarely found at other Vietnamese restaurants. Luckily we ate here twice so I could at least try more than 1 of their delicious offerings. The soups were spot on, flavorful AF, and the portions are very generous. They don't skimp on fresh veggies and herbs either. Their smoothies are made with fresh fruit, not the disgusting powder that most places serves. Just as impressive: their stellar service! Each table is equipped with a call button for your convenience. The 2nd night we came in rather late, approximately 40 minutes before closing. I was very apologetic for our arrival. Well, there were heaps more entering after us, up to the point of past their closing time. They greeted each guests with friendly smiles and energetic attitude. They were efficient in serving and cleaning up the place, they were like machines! I talked to our waiter about his hectic schedule and he assured me that he was happy despite having to stay over time (and having to deal with some fussy patrons!). Thanks Paul C for the reminder to update my review. I've been back a couple times since my first experience and I have to say that I'm disappointed that it's not nearly as good as the first time I came. Not sure what changed or what happened. First experience was 5 stars, second visit was 4-3.5 stars and after that, 2.5 stars. A few friends who came contacted me to let me know that they were not impressed or was very disappointed with the food. I still think my first experience here with the Bun Bo Hue was good. Haven't had it since my first visit since I tried other new menu items each time I came. Hopefully it's still the same. The pho here is sub par IMO after having it. I also got it for my family and they said that it was very disappointing. My sister said that she didn't feel great after eating it (possibly too much MSG?). Bun Rieu wasn't to my liking. I literally only ate 1/3-1/2 of the bowl. Banh Cuon was refreshing but kinda bland in flavor for me. Thankfully they have good sauté sauce that I drenched the plate with. Banh Mai with Beef Stew was ok, little too watery and not enough flavor for me. Pork Belly with Shrimp was flavorful but not what we imagined dish to be. Banh Mi was good and very filling. I've been here many times! Each time, it has been a different name though. Pho'Hana, Charm 3, Vietnam Cafe Pho Saigon, and some other one in between. Tramle? Now, in 2021, it's called Pho Vietnam! I wish them the best of luck because the predecessors didn't seem to last for many years. The solid pho broth and food is definitely a good start. Pho Vietnam is located in Chinatown, at the corner of Hotel and Smith St, and across from Lucky Belly and Livestock Tavern. There's metered parking, private lots, and loading zone parking (after 4pm) that's the nearest to the restaurant. Pho in Chinatown always seems to be much better than out of it. What drew me here was the House Special Pho in a Stone Bowl and Grilled Eggplant. Inside, Pho Vietnam looks pretty much the same as its predecessors. Same chairs, same tables, and lined with artwork and it's dishes along the walls. Everywhere is clean and the tables are spaced out. When you enter, there's a notebook to write down your contact information for covid. The menu is pretty extensive and offers a variety of foods, such as the summer rolls, salads, bahn mi, soups and noodle soups, meat and seafood dishes, congee, clay pot dishes, vegan dishes, an assortment of beverages and desserts, and beer. Wr started with the Grilled Beef Roll. For this roll, it was all right. The beef was just cooked to a nice tenderness. It wasn't dry or tough, but it didn't have any grill marks or sear. A majority of the roll was noodles and lettuce. There's basil and mint, but not enough to notice it. The peanut sauce was lacking taste. It wasn't peanuty or savory or flavorful. I needed to add hoisin, satay, and a touch of fish sauce to make it better. It was an acceptable roll, but the peanut sauce needs some tuning. I first saw a photo of the Grilled Eggplant for another restaurant. It looked good to me, but the price for one eggplant was outrageous. Then I saw it offered here, at a much better deal, so why not try it here? It wasn't perfect, but good enough. The eggplant appeared to be boiled to an ultra soft and tender, sliced in half, then grilled on a flat top. I got smoky, charred, and some burnt (in a good way) flavors. However, the eggplant was too soft to gain any caramelization or crisp from the grilling. The scallion oil added a very subtle scallion flavor, and the fried shallots added a nice sharp and sweet flavor with a nice crisp. However, it really needed some salt because the eggplants were pretty bland. The accompanying sauce saved the day. It had a nice savory taste with a hint of sweetness and spice. Dunking the eggplant in it really enhanced the dish, and balanced out the smoky char flavor of the grill. The main reason we came to Pho Vietnam was to try the Pho in Hot Stone Bowl. It's like a do-it-yourself pho hot pot with a majority of the ingredients on the side. It looked interesting! We ordered the combination. In the Stone bowl had two beef balls, and scallion stalks. The side had rare beef slices, beef tendon, tripe, brisket, flank, pho noodles, raw onion slices, and scallion and cilantro. Also comes with the usual basil, bean sprouts, lemon, jalapeño, and culantro. I first tried the broth, and wow, was it packed with flavor. A nice hearty, beefy flavor with the aromatic spices of star anise, cloves, cardamom, coriander, cinnamon, and etc. There was also a subtle sweetness and umami flavor, so it's probable a touch of MSG was used, but that wasn't overpowering. Still a solid, flavorful, hearty broth. Note to self: don't put everything in at once because the bowl can't fit everything! I dropped the tendons and tripe in first since they can handle more cooking. But the correct way is probably putting in the noodles to loosen them up, scoop it into your bowl with some broth, then slowly put in the other ingredients. It was a fun and unique way, and everything was prepared very well. The beef parts were all fresh, tender, and tasty. All the vegetables were fresh. I enjoyed all of it! A bonus item that came with the Stone Bowl Pho was a small plate of Chinese Crullers (fried dough typically for rice soup). I've never incorporated that in Pho, but it works! Soaked up the wonderful broth nicely. Added more heartiness! Overall, I enjoyed the food here, and will definitely come back to try more things. The pho broth was flavorful, rich, and tasty. The Stone Bowl was a unique way of eating Pho. I probably wouldn't order the grilled eggplant or rolls next time, but there are over 100 other choices. The service was good. The lady was friendly and patient. The food came out quick and orderly. She won't be walking around to see how everything is going, but there's a call button near the table if you need anything, but all the condiments are on the table. The fish sauce was excellent, and the satay sauce was very good. Flavorful with a nice spicy kick. Hope Pho Vietnam can break the trend and stay for years to come! read more

One of the more authentic style Vietnamese restaurants on the island. I ordered the Choice of 3 Specialty Tray - So Good! Heo, Ga, Nem Nuong (grilled pork, grilled chicken, grilled pork paste) they use Banh Hoi noodles instead of Bun (vermicelli) my favorite way to eat this dish. Also includes rice paper wrappers. I had to ask for the typical dipping fish sauce (nuoc cham). Plenty of herbs and lettuce. They have a variety of options for this tray style where you make your own little wraps. You should try one! WARNING DON'T DINE HERE. I've loved my past experiences but this ruined it for me. Just received my DoorDash order and when I lifted my sauce I found a big cockroach. When I called to request a refund, they refused to give me one saying that the food was already here and said they wouldn't do anything about it. Only after I said I would leave a yelp review they said they needed to inspect the food first and to bring the food in person and said I couldn't just send them a picture. NEW FAVORITE VIETNAMESE RESTAURANT! Spacious and clean! No need to worry about being crowded near other patrons as the tables are spread out well. The restaurant feels very open and has good lighting. Menu is very expansive ranging from the typical appetizers, pho, many noodle soup dishes, banh mi, vermicelli, congee, clay pots, drinks, desserts, and even Thai options & vegan options! Check out the menu on their website! Prices are average compared to other Vietnamese restaurants in Chinatown, but the servings are huge so you definitely get your money's worth. I am not a Vietnamese food connoisseur but I am able to identify which restaurants/foods leave a great impression on me and which don't. Today we tried their Vietnamese iced coffee ($4) combination pho (large $12), bun bo hue ($13), and Vietnamese crepe ($13). All so, so good. Bun bo hue is my favorite dish to get if it's on the menu. Not every Vietnamese restaurant serves this so when it is available, I'm most likely opting for it. That being said - Pho Vietnam's bun bo hue is my favorite thus far. You can see lots of minced lemongrass they use for the sate in your bowl of soup. The spice level is perfect - enough to acknowledge that it's spicy, but not too much where it gets too uncomfortable to enjoy. And I also personally hope for banana blossom, pork blood, and steamed pork to be served in my bun bo hue. This place checks off all of my boxes! The pho broth is very savory and its flavor is dense. The meat is tender. And for both noodle dishes, they do not skimp on the meats and toppings. The Vietnamese crepe is huge too! And this is also something I like to order as again, not as many places serve this item. A single order of banh xeo could easily be two meals on its own. Served with an array of veggies and herbs & the nuoc mam (fish sauce) to dip it in. The only "con" I can think of is that their AC is pretty lacking. They have fans on and blowing all throughout the restaurant so that helps, but it can get a little warm throughout the meal. Don't let that deter you from their awesome food though. It's not too bad at all. And takeout is always an option, especially during this ongoing pandemic. All in all, I look forward to being a regular at Pho Vietnam. I know this particular location has a pretty high turnover rate as I can remember other restaurants being ran at this same spot, but I sincerely hope Pho Vietnam is here to stay. read more

The food is actually really good, other restaurants can't compare to here in my opinion, saying this as a girl who grew up in literal vietnamese/ Chinese Town in California where there is a vietnamese restaurant every the other door. I love the pho here. hands down the best broth and portions for the price on island.. i had to give 3 stars tho because of my recent visit. first off, I was seated at a table of 6 bcus it was busy and that was the only seating available which i was okay with.. two guys came in and they asked if it was okay that we share the table, which i was fine with. 1 girl took my order, this was before the two guys sat down next to me. then aunty cane over to the table and took those guys order which was ready in under 10 minutes. I asked if I can just wait and she said yeah. There were people waiting prior so we both waited outside. Then we notice a family went in and asked in their language. The people who was ahead of us finally got there table but they gave the next table to the family, even though we've been waiting long. A customer saw us and made a notice to the workers, and told us she just had to say something which we were thankful for. Finally a table was about to be cleared then out of nowhere a huge family cuts in even though they saw us and stood right next to the table while a worker was cleaning it. After, they sat, my husband lost it cause the other worker who was notified by a customer only stared at us the whole time it was happening. We left and took our business elsewhere. Underrated pho restaurant in Honolulu! A hidden gem my dad found in Chinatown. Better than those overrated pho place. Service is your typical Vietnamese restaurant, but it was quick. All the food are delicious and the chill oil is very spicy, which I like. I got the stone pho thing and 2 people can eat if you don't eat much. The pho was flavorful and don't need any hoisin sauce at all. I tried some of the soup of the hu tieu mi nuoc with chill oil and it was very flavorful and tasty as well. Ordered the large chicken pho and the spicy beef noodle soup which did wonders to curb our soup cravings! The pho had a very nice and aromatic broth with tender chicken and plenty of green onions, and the beef noodle soup had a flavorful and rich broth with super soft round noodles and a variety of meats. Beef slices, pork blood jello, tendons and more which all created a very hearty soup filled with a ton of aromatics! It came with a side of vegetables including jalapeños which added a nice optional spice to it. The menu had a good variety of options without being overwhelming and the restaurant itself was very clean, the items were priced very reasonably for the size of the dishes and when the servers are talking loudly to each other, you know it'll be legit! This place was a hidden on the opposite side of the busy street of Chinatown. I recently discovered it with my bf. You can find street parking or there is a parking lot right across. I have ordered and try the special tray combo that comes with bbq beef, bbq chicken, shrimp paste, pork meatballs, and bbq pork along with rice noodles and lots of veggies. The food was flavorful and well seasoned. I really like the bbq pork and meatballs, it had so much flavor! I also ordered the bun bo hue (spicy beef noodles) and the bun mam (anchovy fish with seafood broth). Both dishes was flavorful and taste great. The noodles came with a lot of meat , noodles and seafoods. Tasted just like mama homecook broth ! The only reason I take off one star is the slower service and restaurant is a bit hot and humid.
