It's hot and sticky summertime, and we were marketing in Chinatown for ingredients to make Chinese jelly noodles or liangfen 凉粉. I had the choice of either using fresh mung beans or mung bean starch, but chose to look for the mung bean starch as the jelly noodles would turn out to be more appealing-looking, white and transparent/translucent. Luckily, I already had the black vinegar, Szechuan peppercorns, and chili oil needed for the sauce in my home pantry, so when the shop owner asked what other ingredients I needed, I told her I only needed the mung bean starch. As we returned to our car on Smith Street along Hotel Street, our stomachs started growling and pleading like the Little Shop of Horrors carnivorous plant, Audrey II, "Feed Me, Feed Me." I spotted Pho Vietnam at the corner of N Hotel and Smith Streets and suggested we try them since we had seen them recently featured on a local news program. Entering the crowded, somewhat noisy, and clean restaurant, an older woman clearing a table gestured to welcome us in. As we took our seats, another younger woman greeted us, brought us menus, and glasses of iced water. We informed her that this was our first visit and that we needed a few minutes to decide on our meal, but quickly ordered two iced Vietnamese coffees, cà phê sữa đá, $6 each. Meanwhile, I chose a bowl of Crab Noodle Soup (Bún Riêu) $18, and my husband selected a plate of Crispy Fried Saimin with Seafood (Mì xào giòn/ phở áp chảo hải vị) $20. Within moments of ordering, the younger woman brought us our delightfully sweetened iced coffees, a generous plate of fresh herb and vegetable garnishes (đĩa rau sống) for my noodle soup, and eating utensils. While waiting, we glanced around the crowded restaurant and noted the generous food portion sizes at others' tables. Our hunger was also enticed by the colorful menu food photos adorning the restaurant interior. FOOD: - Crab Noodle Soup (Bún Riêu): the bún riêu was served in a huge and deep bowl. Its "signature" clear, savory crab-and-fermented-shrimp-paste base and rock-sugar-sweet, tomato-reddish broth were served piping hot over rice vermicelli noodles and topped with crab cakes, shrimp, pork hock, Vietnamese ham, pork blood cakes, tofu, wedges of fresh tomatoes, and herbs. I thought the broth could've been a bit more crab-tasting and less sweet but still, this bún riêu was tasty. Each time I dug out some noodles, the portion didn't seem to lessen as if there was an endless amount of noodles. Also, the fresh herbs and vegetable garnishes were cleanly-washed, crisp, and added texture and more flavors. $18 - Crispy Fried Saimin with Seafood (Mì xào giòn/ phở áp chảo hải vị): the plate of crispy fried noodles was topped with assorted seafood (mainly shrimp, calamari, and fishcake) and vegetables (cabbage, Chinese broccoli, carrots, mushrooms, and cilantro). The bed of fried noodles topped with the seafood mixture sat atop a pool of light-colored gravy. My husband was pleased that the crispy noodles weren't drowned by the gravy and kept their crispy texture almost until he finished his plate. He did find the broccoli somewhat stringy or woodsy tough. $20 Still, the service was friendly and the restaurant's cleanliness and location in Chinatown is convenient. The food portions were generous to be considered a good value, but we thought the flavors were too sweet for our tastebuds. Vermicelli with spring rolls and BBQ pork is my go-to Vietnamese dish, and this one was delicious. The pork was flavorful, the spring rolls had a nice crunch, and the roasted chopped peanuts added great texture. My wife ordered her normal when we go to eat at any Vietnamese restaurant the pho with tendon, which when it came I tried the broth and it was on the sweeter side and seemed it was more watery then flavorful which she agreed the broth didn't have the body of a good pho. The spicy pork ribs were okay, but it wasn't spicy, but had a nice flavor. The service is slow and if you don't let them know, you can sit there for a while before anyone comes back to check on your table. They have only street meter parking or public parking. I've been coming here with my family ever since I was a child. My dad grew up in Vietnam and this is one of his favorite go-to Vietnamese places in Chinatown. The menu at this place genuinely can't be beat. It has everything: pho, bánh mì, vermicelli dishes, even Thai dishes and hot pot! The prices are very reasonable and I haven't found a single thing here I didn't like yet. When I'm feeling fancy I always go for #61 (vermicelli with grilled pork and fresh herbs, mam bún cha Hà Nội ). It comes in a beautiful plate and always hits the spot! Their Vietnamese iced coffee (#3, ca phê sữa đá) is also the best Vietnamese iced coffee I think you can find on this island. I've ordered jellyfish salad from other places in downtown Honolulu and the one from Pho Vietnam is the best as it was primarily comprised of jellyfish. This is where my parents get their weekly pho fix -- no negotiations. I join them every now and then if I am in the area. Parking can be a little tricky since it's street-only, but there are public parking garages nearby that are usually a good option. I love pho, but I can never finish a bowl here -- the portions are huge. They're especially known for their hot stone pho (you'll see how big it is in the pics), but even the regular pho comes in medium, large, and extra-large -- definitely a great bang for your buck. My personal favorite is the duck bamboo noodle soup. They serve the duck on the side. In the broth, they have bamboo shoots and (I believe) duck blood with the noodles. It's sooo good -- I highly recommend trying it. It's my go to dish if you're a duck lover. One tip: I'd suggest sitting closer to the front. I know it's in the name, pho, but I haven't tried it here yet. I'm always drawn to the other dishes. Growing up with a viet culture, my parents would cook all various dishes that are nostalgic to me. So this is a great spot to fulfill those cravings especially now that my parents are older. The tray of special combo comes with the veggie and meat assortment. You're also provided hot water and rice paper with a side of fish sauce. It's a version of summer roll, but you make your own. There is a lot so this is fantastic for sharing. The durian smoothie is so yummy. I get that not everyone loves the smell, but it's creamy and fresh. The vermicelli bowl is simple, but fish sauce brings it all together to make it taste amazing. The crab noodle soup is one of my favorites, a must try if you haven't had it before. They do have a large party gratuity of 18% for 6 or more. Which is pretty much the norm. I placed an online order, arrived early to pick it up, and stood there for over 15 minutes watching the staff walk around and tend to other things -- not once did anyone acknowledge me or check in. When I pointed that out, instead of apologizing or taking any accountability, she doubled down and told me they were out of sandwiches "either way" and that I'd have to cancel my order. That's it. No apology, no alternative offered, no acknowledgment that their story didn't add up. This is unacceptable. If you're out of an item, be honest about it -- don't fabricate a story about phone calls that never happened. I'll be disputing this charge and will not be returning. My husband came here twice already and we've only been living here for 2 months! The soups are so savory and delicious and the staff are wonderful! I got the bun bo hue and my husband got the pho and immediately when we had a sip of our broth, our eyes both lit up because it was good- it reminded us of a home cooked hug in a bowl of soup. We both loved that each bowl of soup had all the fixins that we're use to when we eat it at home and all their veggies that was given to us was fresh with a crisp crunch! We took my MIL there and she loved it as well- we can't wait to come back for more! I've been to Pho Vietnam for a few times for lunch with the lunch bunch and it's one of those spots that fills up pretty quickly once lunch hour hits as it is a popular spot in Chinatown. The ambiance can get a bit loud as there are a lot of people ready to eat a nice meal. I'm a seafood pho kinda gal and theirs is consistently good. The broth has a nice savory depth, the seafood is cooked perfectly, and the noodles are easy to pull apart and slurp up or place in the soup spoon to add some hoisin, chili, or sriracha for added flavor. The toppings are also fresh too. Crispy bean sprouts, fragrant basil and culantro leaves, lemon, and jalapenos. Everything comes together really well in the bowl. Now why the 3 stars? The downside to this: service and parking. Parking in Chinatown is always hectic; you'll either have to hunt for a metered stall on the street or find a paid parking lot or structure nearby. Service here is a hit or miss. Most of the time, its okay but not great. There were a few times where the server would mix up our order. The last visit, I asked for the seafood pho (even pointed and gave the number on the menu) but they brought me oxtail pho instead. The restaurant is pretty big, so we didn't have to wait to get a table. I got the medium brisket pho, and it was a huge portion! This was the smallest size, I couldn't imagine how much food would be in the larger sizes. The brisket was a little on the tougher side, and the meat had way too much fat for my liking. I do like mine more spicy, they do have chill oil as a condiment. They also have the garlic chili and Sriracha. The fat, round rice noodles is cooked perfectly and it goes well with the spicy broth. It is rich and savory. I also ordered the crispy egg roll, so crunchy outside and moist and flavorful inside. Dont forgot to have the Vietnamese Coffee. Service staff are efficient.
