Stopped in on a Saturday night for a light dinner a few beers and to check out the band. The place was fairly busy, but our service was still quick and attentive. My beer never went dry, my bbq sandwich was really good and the prices were decent. The place had a decent rock and roll party vibe. The sound system was well mixed and loud enough to cut through the din without being obnoxious. The only downside for me is that I'm an ex-smoker and had to cut out early because my eyes and lungs were burning from the thick cigarette smoke. This local gem has good drinks and food with even better music. Some of the towns most talented musicians play here. The place is clean and located in downtown Mishawaka. It has dim lighting (once the sun sets) and is one of the few bars left that allow inside smoking. Despite being average size and smokey, something about this place is classy (as bars go). This is mine and my boyfriend's hang out. Now, if you don't like loud, smokey bars, this is not the place for you at night. It's a lot less smokey during lunch, especially if you sit in a booth so if you're wanting to try it out, that may be the best time for you. Outside of that, they have great food and drinks with specials every day. Monday is Family Feud Trivia. Wednesday is karaoke. Thursday is open jam. Friday and Saturday is live music. I really like the ambiance of this establishment; they did a very good job with the architecture and decor. The decor gives the bar & grill a dignified feel. My favorite pick on the menu is the fried chicken salad. It can get crowded and noisy at peak hours. They have a small stage there so they can put on live music, this is often done in the evening almost every day of the week. I suppose that is the main draw of the place, so make a note of it if you like such things. read more

Went here on a late summer weekday evening. Place was not crowded and the service was attentive. No problem with the food (it was pretty good for bar food if I'm being honest). My issue is the cigarette smoke. Before you get all wound up, yes I know this is a smoking place and yes I know this is the neighborhood bar with pool and sports amd the like. But at least open some windows or something. Invest in a ventilation system of some kind. Inhaling cigarette smoking for hours and hours across days or months cannot be good for their staff. I have asthma, and I shouldn't have to struggle to breath or not go to a restaurant simply because the air burns my lungs. read more

I stopped in last night (Saturday) live band was decent - not too loud and nit hip hop. If you're a non smoker like me you can't get away. they do not have designated sections for smoking. I say at the bar, a smoker lit up next to me, i moved to the other side and a smoker sat again, moved to a table and damnit, here comes another smoker. I was happy when they banned smoking, now that smoking is back, i will not be. Any bars that allow smoking will not get my patronage. read more

Once you get used to the smoke filled air you realize you can't even get a beer because the one bartender is only serving people in the waitress station. So if your sitting at the bar you're not getting a beer. Grossly understaffed, great local talent but not worth doing a load of laundry when I walk in the house tonight. read more

Wanted to try this place. Great affordable restaurant menu. Open at 11:00am during the week. Check out their weekly dinner specials! I'm coming back for the prime rib on Tuesdays. Trevor was behind the bar. Most people at the bar this time of day...about 1:30pm. Really nice booth seating on the restaurant side. Large, comfortable, very clean look to the place. Great downtown corner location. I got the fish basket. Can substitute fries, with several sides choices. Homemade soups by the chef. Music in the evenings. There's an open mike night. A special looking old school restaurant and bar can best describe this highly visible eatery in downtown Mishawaka. This being Mishawaka it is often a rocking and edgy crowd patronizing this place and it will not ever vmbe mistaken for a swanky Chicago bar and that's what's good about this place and that it is not pretentious. The fries and rib meal I ordered was excellent and I enjoyed the stop at this aging buildibg and eatery as not every business in life needs to have $uch expensive furniture and accessories. I've been ordering food from The Phoenix since they opened years ago, and I still believe it's one of the best "bar burgers" in town. The Phoenix is located at the heart of downtown Mishawaka, so parking can be a little tricky at times. There are separate dining and bar areas within the restaurant. Nothing spectacular in terms of the way the place is designed. The atmosphere is a little out of my taste, as I don't like being around cigarette smoke, but it's generally a very friendly environment, and the hosts are very attentive as well. But the food is where it's at. As long as you're not expecting five-star fine dining, I think you will be pleasantly surprised. I'm a huge fan of their burgers; medium-well, no condiments for me. The meat is seasoned and flavored very well, and the two slices of cheese, all come together for a "melt-in-your-mouth" flavor. The fries are delicious, as well. I enjoy their steak fries, which are seasoned. Once in a while you'll get a batch that's a little overcooked, or maybe you'll be shorted on them a little, but they're very enjoyable in terms of their flavor. The breaded mushrooms are also a home-run, served with a side of house-made ranch. They're usually very hot, and are full of flavor. Cooked and fried slowly so they maintain their juices. The onion rings are good as well, but as with most places, they don't seem to give you enough. Usually 6-8, but it would be nice if more places gave you 12-14. Like the breaded mushrooms, they're fried slowly to maintain the flavor. And best of all, they brought their prices back down over the Summer, after raising them in 2011 for whatever reason (economy?). Three burgers used to cost $26, but now it's about $20. So if you're looking for some good bar food, then The Phoenix will hopefully hit the spot for you. read more

We came here for dinner on a Thuraday night. They had a great well drink special for only 2 bucks. The BEST thing about this place qas the price. They were a couple dollars less than average on all their meals and they included fries for no extra price. Their burgers were 5.95 which my friend got. I got the prime rib sandwich with mushrooms, onions and cheese. It was only 7.95 so I expected some shaved meat or being small but I was surprised to see it was a whole prime rib. Definetely worth the money. I paid a 2 buck upcharge to get the fries loaded. I was happy with the food and delighted at the bill. read more

Very attractive decor for a downtown bar. Haven't tried the food. The crowd is mixed with younger and older types generally mingling quite well. Never had an issue with anyone and have been many times. The only thing I have issues with is when Mishawaka does the "death march" or an above average band plays, sometimes there's standing room only. At some point, they should just stop letting people in, or build a area outside for spill over crowds. There's plenty of street room outside. read more

I went here for the Murder by Death show on 4/3. Seems to be functional as a bar, but might be the worst concert venue I've ever been to. Here's a thought: putting the bathrooms, kitchen, and storage near the stage tends to make it difficult for people to traverse the place when a band is playing. I'm sure the band love people shuffling in front of them during the set trying to take a piss or waitresses constantly going back and forth with trays full of tayto skins. I've learned to live with smoking in bars, but this place has terrible circulation. Be prepared to smell like the Marlboro Man upon exiting. read more

The Phoenix has been one of our favorites for years. Great live bands on the weekends (never a cover!), reasonably priced drinks, friendly staff, fresh homemade soups daily, and surprisingly good food for a bar. The place is downtown with free parking. YES, this is a smoking establishment therefore it does smell like smoke...with THAT said The Phoenix is a bar you can have a good time at! They have live music on the weekends and although it can be a little loud at times, the owner is always at the door and if you ask him - he will have them turn it down. However the dance floor is not very functional at all. The crowd is a nice mix of young and older people, it is a good place to meet your friends for a drink and hey! if your mom decides to join you-she would be comfortable too! lol I also like how the staff are personable. A few Mishawaka bars that I have visited (bartenders especially) act like when they take your drink order you are bothering them and you had BETTER tip stellar or it's instant attitude...it's nice that you don't get that attitude and arrogance with the staff at the Phoenix! That and the drink prices are very reasonable. The food is touch & go...the steak is not something I would order again. However the Italian beef sandwich, the smothered prime rib or wings are awesome choices. Overall: a good starting point for your weekend festivities! read more
