The ambiance is relaxed and not too loud inside. One thing to note is that the portion sizes are not large so definitely order an extra dish or two for your party size. The standout dishes here are definitely the mandarin chili wings, chili crab noodles, and the duck! The chicken wings were super crispy and had a nice orange/mandarin glaze! Had a reservation at 6pm on a Saturday night. We arrived 10 mins earlier but were sat right away. We ordered the baby bok choy dragon salad, house chicken, duck breast and the chili crab noodles. All dishes felt very creative -- the salad had fresh pieces of lychee. The chicken had a chili sauce that was not too spicy and some pieces of wood ear, and the skin was crispy. My partner really enjoyed the cuttlefish, while my favorite was the chili crab noodles. Glad I somehow snatched a Friday 6:45pm reservation, party of 4 day of. Whenever I try to walk-in, it's always a 45+ min wait. Love the interior. Each wall and section has its own vibe that all mix well together. Really pumps up the energy. Very large space in general which feels like a rare NYC occurrence. The yaotiew is fantastic start. Yeah, the donuts are a great fluffy texture but the accompanying sauces really steal the show. Would ask for more next time. The baby bok choy salad is passable. I can sense the Asian influence but this falls short in comparison to every other order. The cuttlefish has a satisfying bite, but I'd also pass this next time to create more space for the main dishes. The duck breast is amazing. The warm shells let you assemble a flavorful, saucy wrap. All pieces in our dish was the thick cut of the cuttlefish. Chewy. The heirloom tomato sauce it came with was sweet and delicious. The scallop was cooked well. The vermicelli is a little dry, but had some good flavor. The mandarin chili wings were really good! The zesty sauce was full of refreshing citrusy flavors. A nice experience to eat modern takes on well known Chinese dishes. My friends and I loved the chili crab noodles the most; the fried rice was good but pricey for a fried rice that tasted like a typical fried rice. We were disappointed by the Duck breast. I acknowledge and appreciate how they were inspired by the classic Peking duck dish; they incorporated aspects like having spicy cucumbers, a sauce that also included hoisin, and served steamed wraps with the dish. But the duck meat itself was so thick that it's strange to eat the wraps with the duck; the sauce was overpowering and not complementary to the simple duck meat, and the spicy cucumbers were also too strong on its own to accompany any other parts of the dish. TL;DR Don't order the duck breast. I give a 4/5 because I appreciate the work the owners are doing to keep NYC's Chinatown culture alive for the next generation. read more

Came here on a Sunday night at 6pm reservation and it wasn't very busy when we walked in. We were greeted with a friendly hostess and even though one person in our party was running late, they were willing to seat us right away which we really appreciate because most restaurants in nyc require your whole party to be present in order to be seated. Our server was very helpful in explaining their menu and recommending dishes to us since we had 2 young kids and we wanted to make sure the dishes weren't too spicy for them. Their menu is quite limited. But he recommended ordering 1-2 appetizers and 3-4 main dishes for 3 adults and 2 kids and that's exactly what we did and ended up ordering their olive yaotiew, chili and wonton, mussels, chili crab noodles and duck breast and here are my thoughts on each dish: Olive Yaotiew: a modern twist on the traditional Chinese crullers that adds another level of earthy and savory flavor from the olives. It comes with 2 different jams. The lop Cheung jam was creative and I liked how the subtle sweetness balanced the so well with the saltiness from the yaotiew. However, the fig mostarda was a little too sweet for me and I would have liked it if the yaotiew was a little more fluffy and airy on the inside. Chili and wonton: the wonton filling was moist and flavorful. We had requested to have the chili sauce on the side so my kids would be able to eat it and I found the sauce was a little in the spicer side so I would recommended to request it on the side if you cannot handle anything too spicy. I did really like the sauce as it was rich, umami, and garlicky. Mussels: very rich in flavor with just the right amount of creaminess. The pearl noodles were cooked to the perfect doneness which was springy and chewy, and soaked up all the sauce which was heavenly. The breadcrumbs helped add another level of texture. This is definitely a dish I would order again. Chili crab noodles: even though the name of the dish says chili, it in fact isn't very spicy. I loved that the noodles were al dente, but I thought the sauce lacked depth and the spices overpowered the crabs. I couldn't really taste any crabs and it might be the fact that I was the last to get the noodles but I didn't find any crabs in it as well. So this dish was a little disappointing for me as I was told it is one of their most popular dish. Duck breast: this was my favorite dish. The duck was cooked to perfection. It was moist, tender, and I particularly like their skin which was crunchy just like 燒肉. This almost feels like a hybrid between a roast duck and bbq pork belly you get from a Chinese bbq shop. The spicy cucumbers were a tad too spicy for me but they were flavorful and crunchy. The only thing was the steamed flour wraps were not very hot. In fact, the ones on the top already cracked and curled up on the sides as soon as it was brought to our table. As our food started coming out, our server brought us their salt and pepper cuttlefish and told us it was on the house. We were surprised and was very appreciative of it. It's definitely not the traditional grid cuttlefish was this batter is thicker. But the cuttlefish inside was still tender and the tomato jam tasted like a sweeter version of the sweet chili sauce. We finished off our meal with the only dessert that have to offer, which was the mango pomelo pudding. It's as good as it can get since mangos are not in season right now (January) and we also can't get good mangos here in the US so it's not really their fault. But I did find the pudding a little hard to my liking. So I probably won't order it again unless mangos are in season. Service was phenomenal. Our server gave us just the right amount of attention. He made sure to follow up on our requests and needs but never too much that we felt we were being bothered. Overall, phoenix palace offers a modern twist on Cantonese cuisine and I feel it's also a hybrid between Cantonese and sichuan cuisine as well as Cantonese cuisine is normally not spicy. We made reservations for 8pm on a Saturday night and even then, had a bit of a wait. The restaurant is tastefully adorned with traditional Chinese artwork, ornate lanterns, gold accents and felt like a blast into a cdrama. Also they had a bomb ass playlist LOL. Our server advised that we 3-4 dishes should be comfortable for our party of 2: OLIVE YAOTIEW: Most innovative and creative twist on traditional Chinese fried crueller and an absolute must. We would've ordered more had we not been full by the end of the meal. The yaotiew came with a lapcheong jam and fig mostarda. The lapcheong jam was phenomenal -- unique twist to a conventional Chinese ingredient. The fig mostarda had a slight semblance to Haw flakes. All these nostalgic flavors were showcased in such a unique form I would've never envisioned. SALT AND PEPPER CUTTLEFISH: Great crispy batter, but I found the interior to be a little tough. Loved the generous pieces of cuttlefish tho. The cuttlefish came with a ginger-based sweet dipping sauce that had a semblance to 糖水. These packed a bit of heat, but very tolerable for those even with a lower spice tolerance (me!). MUSSELS: The mussels were my personal favorite -- super fresh and tender, with just the right amount of brininess. They come served with preserved radish, pearl noodles, and a crunchy topping that adds great texture. The flavors were bold and balanced -- the preserved radish giving a nice savory kick that paired nicely with the sweet, juicy mussels. Pearl noodles were perfect for soaking up all the flavors and juices. Great for sharing as a lighter main! CHILI CRAB NOODLES: The chili crab noodles are rich, indulgent, and honestly one of the most memorable dishes we ordered. The egg noodles are perfectly springy and drenched in a creamy, slightly sweet chili crab sauce. It's not a traditional, fiery chili crab; the crab flavor is much more subtle and spice level more tolerable. A dish meant for sharing, and a must-order if you're into decadent, saucy noodles DRINKS: Really can't go wrong with any of the cocktails. The strawberry mala margarita was our favorite. We were intrigued by the milk tea coffee martini, but heard that it was more coffee forward and the milk tea flavor wasn't as prominent. Five stars for service and creativity, 4.5 for food. Here is my take. I do not like the sister restaurant potluck club. So my rating is not because I am into the fusion hype. But I do think this restaurant plays homage to Chinatown of the 90s. First, I really loved the lap cheong jam. (Potluck club jam that came with the scallion biscuit and friend chicken was not good. This one is good) Imagine if you minced Chinese sausage and browned on a pan with a bit of sugar until it sizzled and carmelized. I ate that up! The fried crueller (youtiao/you zha guai) I didn't really understand. I think the salty olive gave the fried dough the salt that it usually has but it's still a youtiao. Chinese sausage mince was delicious. The wings were surprisingly good. I liked the citrus hint and I had a moment wondering if it would compete with fish cheeks zaab zaab wings. But this is sweeter and less acidic so can't really compare. Juicy wings though! The crab noodle was surprising. I am still not sure if I loved it but it kept me thinking. If pasta didn't use spaghetti and used egg noodles, if we didn't use green chives but yellow chives, how would we accept this pasta dish? I liked it I think but def sent my brain questioning how pasta this pasta-not-too-pasta dish is. Chicken was really tender. Oddly tender. I asked if it was sou vide but Jason(our server) mentioned that it's because it's local chicken from upstate which is why the texture is so tender. Xo sauce is different than your normal xo sauce. The cuttlefish was familiar but done well - lightly breaded and crisp. The chili crab noodles really packed a punch. It had the most savory and rich flavor and extremely creamy from the crab. I also loved that there were big chunks of crab meat that I could actually taste from the noodles. The house special chicken had so much flavor and surprisingly not dry at all, even the white meat. The XO sauce that it came with was so addicting, I had to throw so much on my rice. Probably my favorite dish of the night was the duck breast. It was cooked incredibly well, so the meat was tender. I had high hopes for Phenox Palace, especially after hearing great things about the team behind Potluck Club. Unfortunately, the experience didn't quite live up to expectations. The Olive Yaotiew was dense and lacked the airy, fluffy texture I was anticipating. The Chili Crab Noodles were a letdown, light on crab and underwhelming overall. Sugar Snap Peas were surprisingly bland, and while the Salt & Pepper Cuttlefish was decent, it didn't stand out. One of the more frustrating parts of the night was the pacing. Each dish arrived individually with long gaps in between, which threw off the flow of the meal. Oddly, the vegetable dish came out last after we had finished our mains. We mentioned this to the manager, and while they kindly took it off the bill, it felt like a strange miss. Service was attentive, which I appreciated. Still, with the uneven food and pacing issues, I'm not sure I'd come back. oh.. and they really need to clean their bathrooms. read more

Same owners as Potluck Club, which I haven't tried yet. I came in and the decor reminded me of the old movie theater at the corner. There was a theater ticket booth where the host/hostesses welcomes you. There was a jukebox and black and white images on the walls that reminds you of movies. This place is a bit higher priced than a typical Chinese restaurant though don't knock it since the dishes remind you of the dishes you know with a twist. When we came in, we didn't have a reservation, though luckily there was a table available though we had to give the table back by 8:30. It was 6:30 so we definitely can have the table back considering we weren't planning to linger like the other folks. The server said the dishes are meant to be family-styled. My friend rarely had family styled, which is basically sharing the dishes. It turned out to be beneficial for us since the dishes we ordered paired well with each other. I wanted to try the olive yao tiew (never had it with olives before) and chinese sausage (lap cherng) jam and fig mostards. It was my favorite dish. I also ordered the chili crab noodles. If you are expecting the one from Singapore, don't. It's egg noodles, tomato, yellow garlic chives. My friend originally wanted a dish but they ran out so he ordered the house special chicken, which included xo sauce, woodear mushroom, and garlic crisps. Everything worked out that we didn't need to order rice noodles with the chicken. It would have been too much food. We finished dinner before 8:30. The service was great, everyone kept on checking in with us and asked how the food was. Go check it out. read more

Great restaurant that had great decor. It is a little slow on service but some of the better flavors I've had in a while. The food here is a bit expensive but my favorite thing they had was the duck. Their flavors are strong and bold and there is something here for everybody. read more

Great service and when I went, they had a deal with Blackbird where if you downloaded and paid with the app, you would get a bonus entree (it was the lobster fried rice, which was one of the more expensive items that I was eyeing!). I thought the you tiao was relatively flavorless for me and I wasn't too sure about the combinations of flavors. The drinks were relatively petite and were on the subtler side of flavor. Crab noodles were creamy and I thought it was maybe the best thing we had, but it did feel a little one note after a few bites. read more

The unique flavors here were amazing! I really enjoyed the scallops and even the owner had talked to us and provided us with this amazing dessert. If you're in the area, I would 100% recommend trying this place. Phoenix Palace feels like me --an American born Chinese bringing a taste of the classics but done in a new and modern way. I'm a fan of all things fusion and this restaurant really embodies a twist on Cantonese classics. Not only that, but the space has so much character embracing what was once a movie theater by commemorating old school Chinese movies that is beautifully done in the decor. Even though we were only a party of two, we ordered a good variety of items because we couldn't choose. Probably best to come here with a group of 4, so you can try more things. We started off with the Olive Yao Tiew ($8), which is more dense than your usual youtiao, but the lop churng jam made this the perfect vessel to enjoy. It's not much olive, which I was afraid of. Then we had the Mandarin Chili Wings ($16) and Salt & Pepper Cuttlefish ($21). Both super crispy with a savory seasoning, but the cuttlefish is definitely a must for me. It's a nice take that's easier to eat than the classic salt and pepper pork chops, which I love. For our mains, we got both the Chili Crab Noodles ($35) and Duck Breast ($42). The noodles were very buttery and tasty, but a bit one-noted. I didn't expect much from the duck breast, but they cook it differently than the usual peking duck. The sauce and spicy cucumbers combined well together, although I wish the cucumbers were sliced thinner so they are easier to hold in the wraps. All the dishes here have such an innovative take on their traditional ones, which is fun for the palette. We also enjoyed the Spicy Strawberry Margarita ($18) to pair with the meal. This was a good cocktail, although lacking a bit on the sichuan peppers notes. At the end of our meal, the manager graciously gave us a Coconut Mango Pudding with Grapefruit ($10). This dessert was delicious and the perfect ending to our meal. I loved the velvety texture of the pudding and could enjoy that all on its own. While the food was amazing, our service was what kicked it up a notch. Everyone that we interacted with was so friendly, welcoming, and helpful. Phoenix Palace really impressed me, so I definitely need to check out their sister restaurant: Potluck Club. read more

Love the old school movie theater vibes. Had the crab noodles and the noodles were perfectly wavy and al dente with a delicious creamy sauce. Also great: chow mein with scallions (great umami sauce), chilled tofu, steak tartare. I really loved the rice crackers that came with the tartare. They were very puffy and delicious yet simple, and should be a standard complement to any tartare! Just okay: veggies w peanut sauce were OK but provided a nice balance to the meal. The duck was also excellent, but maybe a bit pricey for what you get. However it was an excellent rendition of the Beijing roast duck where instead, the duck was prepared in a more French style and still had a super crispy skin. The sauce that it came with great. Also solid gin and tonic with a twist! Service was friendly and prompt. Managed to get seated with my group of friends too, with a reservation. read more

After having such a great experience at their sister restaurant, I wanted to dot try Phoenix Palace. Due to some last minute work schedule changes, I had to message them through Open Table to adjust the timing of the reservations and they were super responsive! The vibe inside is very similar to Potluck Club, so I already knew I was going to have a great time. I started with the baby bok choy salad, which was tasty but I think I prefer the endive salad over at Potluck club. The chili crab noodles were packed with flavor and had lots of chunks of crab meat! The duck breast was super tender, and I felt like I was eating an elevated peking duck with the small wraps they provide. Overall, it was a fantastic meal (as expected) and service was super friendly. Food also came out quickly! Will definitely be back to try some of their other dishes. read more

As a fan of Potluck Club, I was excited to try Phoenix Palace but my visit fell short of my expectations. We came in a party of 5 and were able to try most things on the menu. We started with the Bok Choy Dragon Salad, which was tasty but had way too much dressing that overpowered the dish (you can see in the pics that the salad is just completely doused in the dressing). Of the other dishes we got, I actually really liked the Lobster Sticky Rice but it was a very small portion for the price. My friends liked the Chili Crab Noodles a lot but I felt like the flavor was a bit one-note and the noodles were overcooked and mushy. read more

We managed to snag a reservation at 8:45pm which is pretty late for us but Phoenix Palace has been on my "to go" list for a while and we were both super excited. The outside looks like a movie theater with the shining lights and right by the entrance looks like a little ticket booth. When you enter, there is a retro jukebox and the interior is very cute. We ordered non-alcoholic drinks: the bowery sunrise and the spicy ginger soda from Hong Kong. We got the olive youtiao and salt and pepper cuttlefish to start but had the hardest time choosing a main, so we asked Ricky to gives a recommendation between the house special chicken and the lobster sticky rice. He told us that was a difficult choice and talked about each dish thoroughly and gave us time to decide. We ended up going with the lobster sticky rice because I have never tried forbidden rice and my husband was intrigued by the textures of the sticky rice-forbidden rice-puffed rice combo. We ordered one scallop vermicelli and ong choy as well. The bowery sunrise is super pretty and had a nice guava flavor and was very refreshing. The Spicy ginger soda is not spicy in terms of heat but is a nice ginger ale with hints of lemon and pepper. Both drinks were great alongside the food. The olive youtiao was super intriguing because we mainly wanted to try the lop churng jam since we've never even seen that before. The lop churng jam was amazing! It had the yummy flavor of meat from the lop churng so savory mixed with sweetness and a bit of tartness to even everything out. The fig mostrada was sweet and tangy and good as well but the lop churng jam blew us away. I was a little disappointed with the youtiao because it wasn't as light as regular youtiaos but it still tastes good. It reminded us more of focaccia than youtiao. I don't particularly like olives but the olive flavor isn't overwhelmingly strong and went well with both sauces. The cuttlefish were huge chunks and had a nice crisp and bite. The peppers smelled amazing and reminded me of the fried pepper dish at dim sum. I was getting full at this point and had to pace myself for everything else. The scallop vermicelli smelled amazing as well but was a little too salty for me but I had a bite with the micro vegetable on top and the bitterness of the vegetable cut through the salt for me. The scallop was seared and cooked well. My husband love the vermicelli and was eating it up! The lobster sticky rice was great! The textures of the different rice were fun and the lobster was fried well and was not rubbery. The rice was fragrant and reminded me of my mom's cooking. I kept going back for more rice. The fermented bean curd that was used in the ong choy was not what I was expecting so it was definitely different. I didn't particularly like the flavor because it was a little fruity while being savory? I don't know how to describe it but despite all of that, the ong choy was cooked beautifully and were bright green. The stems were a little crisp and added a nice texture. I told my husband that I need to take lessons because whenever I cook water spinach, they end up looking dull. Ricky came over and asked us if everything was okay because we had just about half of everything leftover. We asked for everything to go and asked if they sold the lop churng jam and, thank goodness, they do! Ricky was super nice and friendly and shared stories about the restaurant and the jam and gave us their dessert for free! The mango pudding had pomelo and lime zest on top. It reminded me of a mash up between the classic Hong Kong mango pudding and mango pomelo. The dessert was brightened with the lime zest and light, smooth, and thick in texture. I highly recommend coming to check out Phoenix Palace! I'd definitely come back to try other things and I look forward to going to their sister restaurant Potluck Club! read more
