Went for dinner on Wednesday. Only 2 other people in the place. I'm always suspicious of an empty Pho restaurant considering its proximity to UB. I ordered the steamed bun as an appetizer and the companion ordered the stuffed chicken wing. We both ordered the meatball Pho. The apps never arrived before the Pho. The broth was tasty with plenty of noodles. The meatballs were thinly sliced but a bit chewy. My bun never came out at all but the stuffed wing did. How can the waitress forget what you ordered when there's one other table, and they are already eating? Sort of interesting but also chewy and not so flavorful. All and all a very mediocre experience. Next time I guess I'll skip Poohvana. read more

I went here on a Saturday night with a group of friends. It was the first time I had been here, so I was open to trying new foods. I was curious because I had no idea what hot pot was, but was anxious to try it. The variety of menu items for the hot pot is just amazing. Have driven by this place for about a year now and I've been wanting to go in. I was pleasantly surprised that it was nicer on the inside than I expected. It's not fancy, but was nice. There were about five tables filled, with one large group of college-age students. There was an option to sit at either a hot pot table or a regular table, we sat at a hot pot table in case we ordered from the Hot Pot menu, but decided not to order from that menu, though it did look good. Both the hot pot and the regular menu had many options! There was one waitress covering the whole restaurant. She was wearing a sweatshirt and probably jeans which seemed casual for a waitress, but she was very friendly and nice and did a good job. She wasn't able to recommend meals because she said she didn't eat that kind of food. We both got a Thai iced tea. We ordered the vegetarian fresh rolls to begin with, two very large rolls served with a nice peanut sauce. We enjoyed those. I ordered the vegetarian Pho. There were three different sauces to choose from to add extra flavor to your food. My Pho was served very hot and was enjoyable, I had the second portion of it for lunch today. My friend ordered the pad thai, which was good. We also ordered the sticky rice with custard dessert which was served hot and was very tasty. Prices were very reasonable. I am appalled at the service from this restaurant tonight. We ordered through skip the dishes. We received only half our order and the other half was wrong. We ordered the steam buns. My wife had eaten some of hers before realizing it was moldy. Skip the dishes contacted the restaurant who refused to send the missing/bad items or issue a refund. We had paid for food we never even received. Skip the dishes stepped up and was paying for the reorder just so we could have our food. The order was accepted but when the delivery person showed up, the restaurant refused to give the driver the food, then kicked him out because they closed for the night. This was insane. I will be taking the moldy steam bun into their restaurant tomorrow. read more

I have been to Phovana many times and seen the changes since it opened this year. I think the broth of the pho is more consistent than it was previously when it first opened, and you know what you're getting each time you go to get that yummy pho. They don't have variations in size of the pho - so come hungry and get a large bowl. I usually opt for the seafood pho which has a nice variety of fish balls, shrimp, crab, squid, and of course, tons of noodles. The nice thing about phovana is that there is a lot of variety with the food you can order, they also have hot pot - which is a decent experience, but I personally come here for the pho. I have tried their flat wide noodles for their lunch menu and that is delicious as well. When it comes to their bubble tea drinks, thai iced tea, and milkshakes - well I've tried them all through my experience of eating here. They offered free Thai iced tea when they first opened and it was delicious, 10/10. The avocado shake I had was also pretty good - very thick. Their bubble tea was alright, I think there are better options for the price you pay. If you order take out pho, they have the broth separate from the noodles so it isn't very soggy or over cooked which is nice. We ordered thru skip the dishes and have never had a worse experience dealing with a wrong order. After receiving only half of our ordered items we contacted skip the dishes and they contacted Phovana to fix the mistake. Phovana refused to give us the rest of order that was placed and paid for, even after skip the dishes offered to pay for another order, they refused to give the order to the delivery person and then closed for the night. We have been loyal customers ordering thru the app and eating at the restaurant but we definitely will not be making that mistake again. We have come here 2 times so far. The restaurant is small. Majority of the tables in the restaurant are hot pot tables. There's very few regular tables, which confuses me because both times I went in, most of the people were eating Pho. The smell inside of the restaurant is not great. As soon as you get walk in, you are instantly hit with a perfume scent. The scent is very strong and lasted from the moment you walk to the moment you leave. The scent isn't a natural smelling scent and makes the experience less enjoyable if you have a sensitive nose. The whole time I was eating, all I could notice was the scent. It's so strong that I ended up focusing more on the scent than the food itself. The first time I went in, I ordered pho which looked like a very big bowl. However there aren't that many ingredients inside when you actually take a look. All the bowls are the same exact price ($10). I went back to visit again. We ordered 2 phos and a grilled BBQ pork. The BBQ pork was not the traditional pork. It looked like it was steamed. There was salty flavor. The BBQ also has an unnaturally red color to it. I stopped in here with a party of 5 just a bit before closing during their soft opening. We were seated at a table with 4 small hotpots and given both a regular menu and hotpot menu. Our group did a mixture of both. Hotpot: You have a selection of 6-7 broths to choose from and then your standard meat, seafood and veg options. The meat options are less adventurous than other similar restaurants so YMMV depending on what you like. The broths run about $4-$6. I opted for the fish tofu--fish cakes that look like tofu--while my two dining companions got pork and chicken. The meat came out on large plates so if you're doing hotpot, try to do it to share! It's definitely worth it. I would also recommend opting for the veggie platter ($10) instead of a la carte veg. Each vegetable item was $4-$5 on it's own, so it can get pretty pricey very quickly. The veggie platter had a mixture of greens and mushrooms that was easily split between two of us. You also have a selection of around 5-6 types of noodles to choose from. Overall, I found the hotpot experience to be very enjoyable. Two people ordered off of the regular menu. One person got pho and reported back that the flavoring was bordering on the bland side and said the amount of meat was a little stingy and overcooked. They also serve bubble tea but were out of a few options. Someone at the table did order a mango tea with rainbow jelly and said it was quite delicious. The service was really, really friendly and nice. They did say that it was their soft opening so they were still working through some things. My friends have came to Phovana and they have been consistently great, even when we show up with a party of 8+, no advance reservations and with kids. And to much of our shock, the staff were extremely kind and courteous to the children of the group too! I think they've totally won us over with that. Their food is pretty consistent, and I like that they have a sauce/condiment bar where you can adjust things exactly the way you like it. It goes beyond the typical Sriracha and Hoisin sauce offering, although they do have plenty of that for you too. Their portions are fair, and I think you definitely do get your month's worth. Phenomenal pho! It was my friend, Carl's 1st time having pho and it was definitely a winner! Our waitress was very cheerful and helpful. She was awesome! We both got the combo pho which had beef, tripe and meatball. I love tripe! But I have been to quite a few places where the tripe was not cleaned so well or cooked right. They thinly slice it well here and it is not chewy at all! The pho was such a perfectly balanced meal, not one ingredient overpowered another. We ordered shrimp skewers among other things. All the food was incredibly bland but the worse part was the raw shrimp. Terrible. Phovana is excellent. I've gotten takeout on four different occasions now... the broth is still quite hot by the time I get home (which takes at least 30 minutes). Their pho is packaged very neatly. Fresh vegetables, and quality meat. Good quantity. This is my go to place for hot pot when I go to Buffalo.

Pho was gluten free (which is the norm but still need to check) and broth was clear and flavorful. Fresh spring rolls were above average with fresh pork and shrimp and lettuce/herbs. Sidenote: never order peanut sauce with fresh rolls at Viet restaurants if you are gluten free as it contains hoisin sauce (wheat). I usually just dip in Sriracha. Friend ordered the appetizer sampler, which was good value and a great idea for a Vietnamese restaurant. Eggrolls didn't seem traditional (more like Chinese spring rolls) and came with sweet and sour sauce instead of lettuce/fish sauce. Will return to try bun bo hue. So happy to have a handful of great Vietnameae restaurants in Buffalo. read more
