I was excited to take my family here for dinner as it had been many years since I've been there. I was craving steak and ordered the ribeye. It was extremely disappointing. First of all I couldn't believe how thin the steak was. I couldn't believe how they charred it on the grill. All I could taste in every bite was the grill. I haven't seen a steak served in a restaurant with grill Marks like that since I was in my teens and I'm 45 now . It was also extremely underseasoned and needed way more salt. We make 10 times better steaks than that at home. It was only $50 but I would've gladly have paid $75 and had it been a good steak then $50 for a bad one . My husband ordered the lasagna, which was just OK. My son's pizza was pretty flavorless and he refused to eat it. The best party of the meal was the bread and gelato. The waiter didn't seem too friendly either. He didn't tell ys about the specials or ask any questions about how the meal was. Whereas we could overhear the server next to us going into detail about all the specials for the evening and chatting them up. Overall it was just really disappointing. read more

Piatti has a lovely setting with delicious food and excellent service. However, despite how pleasant that may sound, our recent experience could have been better. We had a reservation for three guests but were seated at a table meant for two, with a hastily added third chair. Needless to say, the table was crowded. Plates, drinks, and food had to be shuffled around constantly just to make room for our entrées. This alone might not have prompted me to leave a review, but what followed certainly did. The next day, I realized I had been charged for an extra glass of wine. When I called to bring this to management's attention, I was met with a series of questions about my receipt--far too many to detail here--and not once did I receive an apology. My request for a $14 refund couldn't be addressed quickly, and it seemed to inconvenience the manager. I was even told that the waitress would need to confirm whether a second glass had been poured. At that point, I decided to handle the refund with my credit card company instead. I would like to clarify that our waitress was wonderful and attentive; none of this reflects on her service. Give this place a try and decide for yourself, but as for me, it's all about the food, setting, and service. It's not about the $14--though it apparently is for the restaurant. We had such an amazing time at Piatti last night! The vibe is so cute and classy at the same time. I love that the kitchen is visible from the indoor dining area. The woman who sat us was so sweet and friendly. Our server Brook was SO GREAT! She was knowledgeable about the menu and very personable with us. Brook did a wonderful job at making us feel welcomed. We ordered two of the berry lemonade nonalcoholic specialty drinks and bruschetta as an appetizer. Amazing!! For dinner we order the ritolo pasta and the oriecchetti which were soooo delicious. For dessert we enjoyed the budino di mela and tiramisu which did not disappoint, however the budino was slightly more boozy than we would have liked. To start off our server was not very friendly or attentive. We were rarely checked in on and if so, it was because we waved our server down. The best dish we had was the bread and dip, which you have to pay for (unlike most restaurants). My company has orchestrated two celebratory dinners here. We got warm olives (5/5), calamari (5/5), cauliflower cakes (3/5), mussels (5/5). For my main order I got the Orecchiette. The creamy Gorgonzola sauce complimented the juicy chicken and sun dried tomatoes SO well. The servers were ON IT. Oh and the dessert.... YES SPLURGE- just do it. Came to this restaurant in lieu of some other Italian places; wanted to try something new for a change. Located in La Jolla this location has a modest interior, nothing too extravagant for the likes of La Jolla. They have a huge tree in their outside dining with lights wrapped around which we unfortunately did not get seated at. My party sat near a window seat with some really misaligned tables, one being higher than the other one causing some initial issues with water placement requiring for the whole table to be reset due to an employee spill before we could even order. This took some extra time to do and probably could've been prevented entirely had the tables been more maintained, and actually the right height in the first place. Drinks were nothing special, I ordered the Nocino and someone else in my party ordered the Puccini Punch, the Nocino was supposed to have a bit more flavoring to make it more unique but it ended up tasting like a regular old fashion with a strong whiskey taste. As for the Puccini it had a sweet taste, almost like an ice tea. Food was decent, the bread we ordered was warm and had good flavor with the sauces but not free like other Italian restaurants. The Orecchiette I ordered was good but the flavoring didn't blow me away as the white sauce was a little lackluster to increase the flavor. The Cannelloni was solid, only wished there was more pieces but the sauce was great. For the last year, this restaurant has become our top choice. We always take our out-of-town guests here, go on dates, and celebrate special occasions. Every meal we've had here has been fantastic. had a wonderful dinner at piatti to celebrate the completion of a half marathon! the outdoor seating was lovely, it felt like we were sitting at the front porch of a really cute cottage. they also had heaters which was lovely. to start, my group and i ordered the ciabatta bread which came with a really yummy spiced oil dip (10/10) and the endive beet salad. the salad was good overall but could have had a bit more dressing and beets, there were only a few beets on there and was thinking it'd be more beet-heavy as it's a beet salad. for mains, my group got the margerita pizza, pappardelle, and cavatappi. we were all very happy with our choices and the portions were perfect! everyrhing tasted very fresh and thoughtfully done! our server, brooke, was so sweet and attentive. we felt very well taken care of and they even kindly brought a tiramisu for us to celebrate the half marathon. so kind! also the location is on a really cute street in la jolla that's actually blocked off from cars so it felt very cozy and almost european. love that! would definitely recommend you pay piatti a visit :) read more

For dinner before a show at the La Jolla Playhouse, Piatti was nearby and highly recommended. Because traffic was so slow on the freeway, we were a bit tight on time for the show, so we let the servers know, and they not only sent everything out very fast, but even split all our dishes for us before presenting our plates. Their freshly baked bread was very tempting with the balsamic and olive oil dip, but we somehow managed to eat only two pieces each before our dinner arrived. We split the fritto misto for $22 that included shrimp, calamari, asparagus, and shaved fennel. This could easily have been an entrée for one. We also split a caesar salad $14 (photo is a half portion) that was fresh and nicely dressed. We split the veal piccata $34 (half a portion in the picture) with lovely spinach and what they called mushroom risotto cakes that I found bland. I chose a lovely glass of the Niklas Italian sauvignon blanc for $15 and we finished in plenty of time to make the opening curtain! read more

Piatti was an amazing experience. I had gone with a group and the service was amazing! I ordered the Cannelloni and the short rib in this dish was delicious and tender. I was so full and still wanted to keep eating it. The Crostata Al Limone had a nice tart and sweet balance to it which is what I look for in a dessert. They have both indoor and outdoor seating. The outdoor seating has a beautiful giant tree and the outdoor seating is dog friendly as well. I would love to come back again! read more

I've never left a review before, but this experience at Piatti in La Jolla Shores pushed me to. I stopped in solo -- a younger guy visiting town for a couple of days -- excited for a great Italian meal. The place looked amazing: beautiful space, great vibe, and a menu that had me genuinely stoked. I ordered an $18 Old Fashioned that came out warm, unstirred, and completely off balance -- overly bitter, heavy on the Amaro, and missing the stamped ice cube every other guest at the bar seemed to get. For the price, it felt careless. Sitting there for about ten minutes without touching it, I ordered a small glass of wine that couldn't have been more than 4oz, and a bread and oil appetizer off the menu, which ended up being the highlight of the night. Maybe it was an off night, or maybe being a younger solo guest meant my experience got less attention -- I can't say for sure. I asked the host to speak with a manager, waited around five minutes, and decided to just leave. I wasn't trying to complain -- I genuinely wanted to give constructive feedback because I know everyone has off nights. But even that lack of follow-through said a lot about how the place is run. The service here is great, we got sat down super quickly. The waiter was super attentive, he gave us plenty of time to enjoy our appetizers and then gave us our main dishes. We got the ciabatta and the fried calamari for appetizers. The ciabatta tasted great, it came warm and slightly toasted and it was very addicting with the vinaigrette sauce. Calamari was good, came with some shrimp and also went great with the dipping sauce. I got the Pappardelle, I loved the shrimp it this. It was huge and juicy and there were a decent amount of them. While exploring La Jolla for some kayaking fun, my husband and I decided to try out a local spot for a bite to eat. Since there were plenty of Italian options around, we went for Piatti because of its cozy vibe. We expected a wait time, but luckily it was only around 30 minutes, which wasn't bad considering it was a busy weekend. The place was clearly popular. Once we got seated, the waitress was really friendly, and our food came out surprisingly fast. I ordered the Penne, and it was absolutely delicious and filling. After kayaking for hours, I barely managed to finish it! My husband went for the vegan pizza, and he loved it. The combo of eggplant, grilled shiitake mushrooms, arugula, and vegan feta hit the spot for him. Overall, Piatti gave us a great experience. This is my favorite Italian Restaurant in town. Lovely and cozy ambience by the beautiful fig free, amazing and friendly servers and staff and mouth watering delicious food. I love their Bread loaf and dipping oil, it's an absolute must. The pastas are freshly made and one of a kind. My favorite items on the menu are the Rotolo, The Ravioli di Zucca and the Lemon Cream Sauce Ravioli. Their desserts and drinks are also on point. Had dinner here for our anniversary. We've been here before and have always enjoyed our meal. The pasta is always great so we had the Pappardelle and the Cannelloni. The pasta on the Papperdelle was perfectly done. Really nice and light. The Cannelloni was hardy and the rib was really nicely done. For appetizers, we had the Mussels and the Grilled Hearts or Romane. The servers were nice and polite. Food came out quick and we had a really nice meal. We also had to wait a good 15 minutes before we finally found someone to inform our own waiter we wanted to pay. They did add a birthday wish to the menu, which was a really cool touch, but misspelled my name. Like I said, the food was amazing. But the addition of the wine, especially in that amount, never should have happened. Don't pull that practice on other unsuspecting customers. And make sure you spell people's name right. Great ambiance, love the interior. The front of house staff was superbly polite and efficient. The service was fast and the server was really nice. The food, however, disappointed us. I ordered the lasagna and it was cold in the middle which tells me it was reheated in some way. While it was homemade, it wasn't freshly made. The server did offer to get another one, but I'd already eaten half of it and didn't want another entree. I appreciated the offer of a free dessert, too, but my appetite had been kind of spoiled by it, so I politely refused. My partner had the penne with bolognese which I also tried and it was salty and beefy, but we didn't get any tomato notes at all and not a whiff of the aromatics that normally go into it. Pasta was so delish! Came here spontaneously on a Monday night and were basically seated immediately. I got the spaghetti with the veal and pork meatballs and oh my gosh they were so tender and flavorful. The dish was a bit plain otherwise since it's spaghetti so it's pretty standard. They do have a standard of living surcharge of 4% added on to the bill that they say is not a tip, but I think that's extremely unfair. Piatti should be paying its employees anyways. With the high price, it's hard to justify standard pasta. read more

Came in as a walk-in on a Sunday night and was pretty surprised that there was availability for a table for two. It had to be outside though, which initially had me concerned of the cold. Luckily there were many heat lamps outside and it was sufficiently warm. Shortly after we were seated we accidentally said yes to having some bread as appetizer (which, as a heads up, costs ~$5, NOT complimentary). We went along with it though when we saw how good it was. It was warm, fresh, and super soft and fluffy on the inside. The dipping oil was also very good, just a bit spicy with some vinaigrette, chili oil, cilantro. Normally I hate vinaigrette based sauces, but this was so good we asked for more to go with the main course and to take home. I had the cannelloni which looked very unassuming in the pictures. The taste, however, could not be more different. It's got braised short ribs based within sheets of the lasagna, and red sauce throughout. There's plenty of cheese, and the sauce is not too overpowering in tomato flavor, and the braised short ribs rather than regular ground beef brings it a flavor that's unmatched with any other lasagna type dishes you may have tried in the past. My girlfriend had the linguini with clams, and this was actually a custom order that they were able to accommodate; surprisingly many other restaurants in SD don't quite have this dish on the menu. It's got white wine, lots and lots of big chopped garlic pieces. The clams have a lot of garlic flavor as well, very nicely done. I would definitely come back in the future. read more

I've been to many Italian places and this place stands out because it sits in a cute, not so busy part of La Jolla. I also have to add that I loved the scenic drive, with the backdrop of ocean and sunset, as I navigated the windy streets heading to the restaurant. As you arrive, a small portion of the street that this restaurant faces, is blocked off to allow pedestrians to freely walk amongst the restaurants. Parking can be challenging, but luckily, I was able to find some parking about a block away. The restaurant is classically appointed with white cloth draped tables and smartly dressed waiters and waitresses. The items are reasonably priced for La Jolla, surprisingly. Apps: PEI mussels. That saffron leek sauce....prepare yourself to dip away at this with the accompanying bread. So delicious and you are provided with an abundance of mussels. This can be easily shared with three people. House bread: This was okay. I love bread but this one didn't stand out to me very much. Main: I chose the Papperdelle pasta as recommended by my fellow Yelpers. I'm so glad I listened to you all! Although the consistency of the broth was thin, the dish was so darned good! The sauce consists of white wine, lemon, and saffron. A simple sauce, but it was amazingly tasty! The combination of all the ingredients worked with this dish and I loved the rustic feel, like I was dining in Italy. I did get to taste one of the house specials, the risotto with bell peppers and Italian sausage. This was good, but it was not wow me good like the Papperdelle pasta. Dessert: Tiramisu. This is a staple dessert in any Italian restaurant and this one didn't disappoint. Sitting on a pool of sweet cream, the dessert was soft and moist. It reminded me a Tres Leches cake because of the sweet cream. Overall, this is a nice Italian spot tucked away in the scenic hills of La Jolla. read more

I could not believe we hadn't been here before. Piatti, is a hidden gem in La Jolla. I've been to Tuscany and this was the most flavorful and authentic Italian food I've had. Both of the couples sitting next to us were speaking in Italian which means even Italians in the area love this place. The ambiance is a quaint balance between elegant modern and homey bistro. The patio area was my favorite. This a huge tree in the middle lit up my sparking lights. It's a very romantic place. OH M GOD! And the food. It was over the top. After being seated and deciding what we wanted to order, it took a long time for someone to come by to take our order. We did notice that it got pretty busy after we had arrived so we don't really blame them for taking longer. However, the service itself was not great. The employees seemed a bit rude and it made me and my friends feel like we weren't welcome :( We started with a ciabatta which was a good starter to share. For our main dishes, we ordered the cavatappi, pappardelle, and the fresh tomato pizza and they all looked better than they tasted. The best part of the whole dinner was the tiramisu slice they prepared for my birthday which was actually so delicious, but we had decided not to order any additional dessert because of how the experience was as a whole. Booked this place for a birthday party and let me just tell you...they were SO accommodating. What started as a party of 10 eventually turned to 12 then 14. And they were really nice about it everytime I called them and messaged them on OpenTable. The outdoor area is so beautiful and really has a magical garden feel to it. The food was delicious, and the wines too. We had a few of the focaccia with the dip and it's a just get! The sauce provided was so spicy and garlicly - a fail by the chef Short rib cannelloni - the search party is still out looking for where the short rib was literally there were two my slices for three cannelloni, smothered in cheese, pasta, and sauce Veal Piccata - good flavor, 2 paper thin small slices of veal, an entire bottle of capers, spinach was good (how hard is it to make steamed spinach?) the rice cake had potential, but it was ice cold and not warm at all, someone took it out of the freezer, microwaved it and slap it on the plate. All of this was smothered with sauce and capers. For the tourist in the area, I'd suggest finding a different restaurant. read more
