Absolutely mediocre. If you are at all discerning with your Italian food, this place will probably disappoint you. First of all, the plates at our tables we dirty looking- even on the bottom. Totally off-putting and a bad first impression. We ordered the Rotoli and Cavatappi and Caesar Salad. All three, while being sufficiently tasty, were also TOTALLY UNDERWHELMING for being $30 plates. I personally would find another Italian place. Its only redeemable quality is that it's in a beautiful location by the ocean!
I've been coming here occasionally for about 15 years, usually twice a year for family members' birthdays. I'd recommend it as a location for a special occasion, such as birthdays and anniversaries. My favorite appetizers are the semolina fried calamari and the saffron risotto balls, but the grilled hearts of Roman and butter lettuce salada also make for wonderful appetizers of sides. My favorite main courses are the orecchiette, ravioli, lemon herb half chicken, and grilled rib eye. The hot salami pizza and the dried mission fihs pizza are very good as well. They have an extensive wine list, some good beers on tap, amd a nice variety of liquor. They're sparkling water with lime is unexpectedly good. The service is pretty incredible and the food comes out fairly quickly. The servers and staff are very accommodating. Parking can sometimes be a hassle, especially on weekends, due to their location being in a heavily trafficked area of La Jolla Shores. On the other hand, a short walk in this area tends to be unusually scenic. It's only two blocks from the beach so an after meal walk on the beach is never out of the question! Update: Piatti is still a decent restaurant, but honestly I feel like the quality has gone down a bit over the past several years, possibly due to a change in management. I say this because the prices have stayed the same, but the depth of flavor on several mains and apps seems to have evaporated, and the level of pasta being used seems to be good boxed but no longer made in-house. Service is still good, but rising restaurant prices weighed against the overall quality of the food just feels unjustified now. None of this is to say that Piatti is not worth visiting, but it is no longer what it once was.
We came here on Friday night for our 7:30 reservation. We were immediately seated at a cute little two-top tucked into a corner of the dining room. Monica quickly greeted us, and we ordered some glasses of white wine (Vermentino and Riesling). Both suited our individual palettes. Piatti has been in the Shores since 1987, so it is one of the LJ OGs. The business is very busy on the weekends and reservations are recommended. The decor is cute and homey. The street has a number of other restaurants on it, and it is pedestrian-friendly (blocked off to cars), and charming. There are some cute photo ops if you are into that sort of thing. The atmosphere here was lively, both inside and out, and the restaurant was full. I was surprised that they charge for bread and oil, but they do ($7) and it was tasty. The bread was crunchy and the dipping oils (balsamic, evoo, herbs) were fresh and flavorful. We shared a Caesar. M. ate the one anchovy because I'm not a fan. I'm not sure he is either, but he ate it anyway. Lol. The portion was decently sized and it was fine for us to share. I had the Shrimp Pappardelle. The large flat noodles tasted like they were homemade, and the sauce was flavorful and the saffron was a nice touch. It was heavy on the oil though, so I felt a bit greasy afterward. Many of the other pasta dishes were cream-forward, and I did not want a cream sauce, so this was a better pasta option for me. One of my shrimp was a lukewarm and unseasoned, but the others that were stirred into the pasta more fully were hotter and more flavorful. I also found a random piece of seafood in the dish, maybe it was calamari? I ate it. I guess that was a bonus. The Cavatappi per M.'s observations was fine. Those noodles did not look homemade, but it is always possible I guess. He enjoyed his food, especially the homemade sausage, and cleaned his plate. By the time Monica came around to ask us about dessert, there was no way that we could even think about it. Maybe another time. Overall, the verdict on Piatti is that it is a tad expensive but the upscale location has to be taken into consideration. Street parking nearby. We enjoyed our dinner here for sure. Mille grazie!
This Italian restaurant has been a mainstay in the La Jolla Shores business district for nearly 30 years. We used to come to Piatti at least once a year to host a dinner for out-of-town employees. With the pending closure of a stretch of Avenida De La Playa, turning that section into a pedestrian-only walkway will make al fresco dining here more tranquil as they do have multiple tables set up curbside as a parklet. I visited on a weeknight and sat at the bar which was to the left of the hostess stand when you walked in. The main dining room was to the right and was about half occupied at the time. The food menu consisted of one page. Appetizers, salads, pizzas, and entrees were in the left column while the pasta offerings were in the right column. I chose the Herbed Cauliflower Cakes to start my meal. Two thin cakes were grilled and topped with roasted pepper aioli. A bed of arugula was provided on the side. The item was very unique, and I would recommend it to anyone even if you are not a vegetarian. For an entree, I selected the Cavatappi from the pasta section. The noodles resembled elbow macaroni but with a twist to them. Italian sausage, mushrooms, spinach, tomato sauce, and parmesan were the other components to this dish. Roasted potatoes used to also be a part of the mix, but that has been removed. The sausage was flavorful, but the sauce was a bit salty. I think Piatti delivers consistently solid food, but I feel it has been bypassed by newer Italian spots around town that have more creativity and flair in their menus.
We had dinner here while in town for a meeting and sat in the outdoor area which was lovely. There were hummingbirds visiting some nearby flowers which was a welcome sight for us midwesterners who won't see them at home for another month and a half. We enjoyed the cauliflower cakes and bread as appetizers. The wine list has good options by the glass. I went with a classic Chianti which did not disappoint. The cavatappi with sausage was flavorful and a nice classic combination of ingredients. Service was good, and we had a nice relaxing evening near the beach.
Piatti truly never lets me down. I recently visited again to bring a hometown friend and we both had a fabulous time. The service is ALWAYS top notch. He thought their IPA's were really refreshing, it was a good match for a beautiful day. I had a Piatti Spritz which is a little strong, but it ultimately paired well with my caesar salad. I can never, ever go wrong coming here.
Took my teenage kids here for the first time recently and they agree - this place is so good, they ranked it their favorite Italian Restaurant in San Diego! We sat outside in the beautifully lit courtyard. Lots of family celebrations occurring inside and outside the restaurant. The courtyard is very romantic too if you want a spot for a date night. The food was great as always. This is a staple in La Jolla Shores. Any native San Diegan who grew up in or around La Jolla know this charming spot is always a crowd we pleaser. We had the Calamari appetizer, and for our entrees the pasta carbonara, cannelloni with short ribs, and the Fruti de Mare Linguini. The linguini was our least favorite of the 3. The pasta was not as delicate as the other 2 dishes and that made a difference. Service was good. Our server was busy but very attentive.
The outdoor patio was super cozy and the perfect temperature with all of the heaters! My husband and I came with a group to celebrate a birthday and we had a lot of fun sharing a bunch of pastas. My husband and I ordered the ravioli (pro tip: order half the spinach, basil, ricotta, lemon cream and half the tomato sauce if you want variety!) and the pasta of the day, which was Spaghetti with chicken. The ravioli with the lemon cream was by far my favorite and the spaghetti had a bit of a spicy kick to it.
We were a party of 6 celebrating a friend's birthday . Service, food and ambiance were great. There's a full bar and the restaurant has indoor and patio seating. We were seating in a round table with a cool big lighting fixture above us. And we had a nice view of the kitchen. We ordered the ciabatta Demi loaf with piatti dipping oil for the table to share. Then I ordered a vacation spritz and the shrimp pappardelle. The bread was very fresh but the piatti dipping oil was what made it so much more delicious... Olive oil , balsamic vinaigrette with garlic flavors yum!! I liked my vacation spritz as it was refreshing and fruity but I would have preferred it to have just a hint more prosecco in it as it tasted like a lot of juice. The shrimp and pappardelle entree was very good. Fresh pasta made in house was al dente and the prawns were succulent. The ground pepper and freshly grated Parmesan cheese made it taste even better. I enjoyed this pasta because the sauce was flavorful yet light, it wasn't a heavy sauce that weighed you down after eating it. Lastly our server comp'd my friend a tiramisu dessert for her birthday which she shared with us. I couldn't have just 1 bite. It was so amazing! I would return just to order the tiramisu! This was a lovely experience.
I chose to dine at Piatti for the last meal of my San Diego trip and it did not disappoint. The staff was attentive and nice, the ambiance was romantic and inviting (I decided to dine on their patio) and the food was amazing. I tried the following: -pappardelle (5/5! Typically served with a meat sauce, I was excited to try the saffron and shrimp rendition of this dish. It was perfectly balance with acidity from the tomato and wine, a touch of cream and the complexity of the saffron. The shrimp were very nicely cooked and complimented the pasta well) -crostata al limone (5/5; super unique and delicious lemon tart with raspberry. Perfectly balanced and oh so good. I'm really glad I took the waiters recommendation to try this dessert) I'm definitely glad I decided to try Piatti and I will certainly return the next time I'm in town.
We chose to dine outside which was a great choice. The service was excellent and they were informative and prompt. I had the Ceasar Salad with extra anchovies and linguine with clam sauce. Both the pasta and clams were fresh and tasty. My wife had the raviolis are made 3 in a red sauce and 3 in a white sauce. We shared the bred pudding and gelato. A great dining experience from start to end.
We came to Piatti a few years ago and had such a great experience, so we were honestly a little sad that last night's dinner didn't live up to what we remembered. We just wanted to share some feedback because we really do hope it was an off night. The burrata was very dry and didn't have much flavor for a $21 salad, and the beet salad was quite soggy. My friend even looked at me and said, "I'm tired of eating this salad." The sauces were also very watery, and the homemade pappardelle our waiter recommended were a little too Play-Doh-like for us. We ended up leaving most of them. The lasagna was okay, but overall the food and service just didn't feel quite at the level we expected for the price. Our waiter seemed a little disengaged and we had to prompt him a few times. We're sharing this because we really enjoyed our visit a few years ago and would love to have that experience again.
Location is amazing. It's really nice to sit outside and then take a short walk to the beach especially around sunset time! To be honest, the food was a bit underwhelming. Things sounded good on the menu but nothing was memorable and there wasn't much depth of flavor. The sauce for the calamari was extremely salty, salad was a bit over-dressed, bruschetta sauce was good but bread was a bit soggy, and our pasta/ravioli was underwhelming without much flavor for a red sauce & the meatballs in my parents' pasta also looked a bit dry. It was a bit disappointing since it looked really nice but I don't think I would go back.
Piatti is the Italian jewel in La Jolla Shores without any doubt and for decades. This restaurant never disappoint, so when my friend Margarita decided to celebrate our belated birthdays there, I did not hesitate even though I did not want to indulge in pasta during lunch time...yet impossible not to eat their pasta. It is just amazing. My friend and I shared our dishes of pasta with vongole (the gorgeous clams) and the linguini with shrimp (along with the calamari dish that also included asparagus and shrimp). The patio setting is fantastic and the service is top notch. I like how they have 3 different spaces, the outdoor seating, inside fresh and includes a little store with Italian goodies at the entrance, and then that patio with the gorgeous tree as centerpiece. Consider parking situation, not easy to find parking in that area, so plan in advance. read more

The perfect place for delicious Italian food. We had been coming here often when we lived close by but haven't been there in years lately since we moved away. I'm happy to say that it is just as good and perhaps better than I remember. Gorgeous setting With an updated dining area since I was last year that really looks nice. The best place to sit in my opinion is the outdoor courtyard and that's where we were. Very cozy and beautiful under the large tree. The service was fantastic from start to finish. The menu is very varied, and the homemade pasta selections are my favorite. The fried calamari appetizer is extremely generous and perfectly fried with absolutely fresh seafood and vegetables, you can't go wrong with that. The carpaccio is also wonderful. You now have to pay for the bread but the bread is delicious and freshly made with a balsamic garlic dipping sauce. My favorite is the shrimp pappardelle and we also tried the short rib cannelloni, which were perfection. Nice selection of wines. Overall prices were appropriate and not out of line. Didn't need dessert but they gave us a free tiramisu for our anniversary. Normally, I am not a tiramisu fan, but this was the best tiramisu I have ever tasted! So, even though we've moved a little farther away, we will definitely be back. Piatti's is still on their A+ game. read more

Came to this restaurant in lieu of some other Italian places; wanted to try something new for a change. Located in La Jolla this location has a modest interior, nothing too extravagant for the likes of La Jolla. They have a huge tree in their outside dining with lights wrapped around which we unfortunately did not get seated at. My party sat near a window seat with some really misaligned tables, one being higher than the other one causing some initial issues with water placement requiring for the whole table to be reset due to an employee spill before we could even order. This took some extra time to do and probably could've been prevented entirely had the tables been more maintained, and actually the right height in the first place. Drinks were nothing special, I ordered the Nocino and someone else in my party ordered the Puccini Punch, the Nocino was supposed to have a bit more flavoring to make it more unique but it ended up tasting like a regular old fashion with a strong whiskey taste. As for the Puccini it had a sweet taste, almost like an ice tea. Food was decent, the bread we ordered was warm and had good flavor with the sauces but not free like other Italian restaurants. The Orecchiette I ordered was good but the flavoring didn't blow me away as the white sauce was a little lackluster to increase the flavor. The Cannelloni was solid, only wished there was more pieces but the sauce was great. Unlikely I'll make another trip considering the competition in San Diego for Italian Restaurants; this one isn't quite on par with other choices. read more

For dinner before a show at the La Jolla Playhouse, Piatti was nearby and highly recommended. Because traffic was so slow on the freeway, we were a bit tight on time for the show, so we let the servers know, and they not only sent everything out very fast, but even split all our dishes for us before presenting our plates. Their freshly baked bread was very tempting with the balsamic and olive oil dip, but we somehow managed to eat only two pieces each before our dinner arrived. We split the fritto misto for $22 that included shrimp, calamari, asparagus, and shaved fennel. This could easily have been an entrée for one. We also split a caesar salad $14 (photo is a half portion) that was fresh and nicely dressed. We split the veal piccata $34 (half a portion in the picture) with lovely spinach and what they called mushroom risotto cakes that I found bland. I chose a lovely glass of the Niklas Italian sauvignon blanc for $15 and we finished in plenty of time to make the opening curtain! read more

All three courses were absolutely delicious! The ciabatta bread and doing oil was so good. We ended up buying two of the dipping oil bottles. The lasagna has a different flavor than other generic ones. I think it feels lighter and in my opinion it's better than the normal ones. The ravioli with the lemon sauce. The patio setting was nice and they turned on the heaters when asked. The only negative I'd say is that the waiter took a bit of time to come back and check on us, or get the check, etc. But it wasn't absurd. read more

Piatti was an amazing experience. I had gone with a group and the service was amazing! I ordered the Cannelloni and the short rib in this dish was delicious and tender. I was so full and still wanted to keep eating it. The Crostata Al Limone had a nice tart and sweet balance to it which is what I look for in a dessert. They have both indoor and outdoor seating. The outdoor seating has a beautiful giant tree and the outdoor seating is dog friendly as well. I would love to come back again! read more

We had such an amazing time at Piatti last night! The vibe is so cute and classy at the same time. I love that the kitchen is visible from the indoor dining area. The woman who sat us was so sweet and friendly. Our server Brook was SO GREAT! She was knowledgeable about the menu and very personable with us. Brook did a wonderful job at making us feel welcomed. We ordered two of the berry lemonade nonalcoholic specialty drinks and bruschetta as an appetizer. Amazing!! For dinner we order the ritolo pasta and the oriecchetti which were soooo delicious. For dessert we enjoyed the budino di mela and tiramisu which did not disappoint, however the budino was slightly more boozy than we would have liked. My company has orchestrated two celebratory dinners here. We got warm olives (5/5), calamari (5/5), cauliflower cakes (3/5), mussels (5/5). For my main order I got the Orecchiette. The creamy Gorgonzola sauce complimented the juicy chicken and sun dried tomatoes SO well. The servers were ON IT. Oh and the dessert.... YES SPLURGE- just do it. I was excited to take my family here for dinner as it had been many years since I've been there. I was craving steak and ordered the ribeye. It was extremely disappointing. First of all I couldn't believe how thin the steak was. I couldn't believe how they charred it on the grill. All I could taste in every bite was the grill. I haven't seen a steak served in a restaurant with grill Marks like that since I was in my teens and I'm 45 now . It was also extremely underseasoned and needed way more salt. We make 10 times better steaks than that at home. It was only $50 but I would've gladly have paid $75 and had it been a good steak then $50 for a bad one . My husband ordered the lasagna, which was just OK. My son's pizza was pretty flavorless and he refused to eat it. The best party of the meal was the bread and gelato. The waiter didn't seem too friendly either. He didn't tell ys about the specials or ask any questions about how the meal was. Whereas we could overhear the server next to us going into detail about all the specials for the evening and chatting them up. Overall it was just really disappointing. read more

The service here is great, we got sat down super quickly. The waiter was super attentive, he gave us plenty of time to enjoy our appetizers and then gave us our main dishes. We got the ciabatta and the fried calamari for appetizers. The ciabatta tasted great, it came warm and slightly toasted and it was very addicting with the vinaigrette sauce. Calamari was good, came with some shrimp and also went great with the dipping sauce. I got the Pappardelle, I loved the shrimp it this. It was huge and juicy and there were a decent amount of them. The tomatoes and lemon makes this pasta a bit more on the tart and sour side, but I like that it was on the lighter side because of this. read more

For the last year, this restaurant has become our top choice. We always take our out-of-town guests here, go on dates, and celebrate special occasions. Every meal we've had here has been fantastic. Recently, The service has been lacking. The waiters seeming inexperienced and unsure how to properly serve tables. Even our guests have noticed. The dirty martinis used to be outstanding! But on our last two visits, we had to ask for more than one olive in our dirty martini and had to stuff our own blue cheese olives - bring back the blue cheese olives, please! read more

While exploring La Jolla for some kayaking fun, my husband and I decided to try out a local spot for a bite to eat. Since there were plenty of Italian options around, we went for Piatti because of its cozy vibe. We expected a wait time, but luckily it was only around 30 minutes, which wasn't bad considering it was a busy weekend. The place was clearly popular. Once we got seated, the waitress was really friendly, and our food came out surprisingly fast. I ordered the Penne, and it was absolutely delicious and filling. After kayaking for hours, I barely managed to finish it! My husband went for the vegan pizza, and he loved it. The combo of eggplant, grilled shiitake mushrooms, arugula, and vegan feta hit the spot for him. Overall, Piatti gave us a great experience. The cozy ambiance, friendly service, and tasty dishes were a great add-on to our La Jolla trip. If you're in the area and craving Italian food, Piatti is definitely worth checking out. read more

Had dinner here for our anniversary. We've been here before and have always enjoyed our meal. The pasta is always great so we had the Pappardelle and the Cannelloni. The pasta on the Papperdelle was perfectly done. Really nice and light. The Cannelloni was hardy and the rib was really nicely done. For appetizers, we had the Mussels and the Grilled Hearts or Romane. The servers were nice and polite. Food came out quick and we had a really nice meal. The downside was that we weren't given an option for indoor or outdoor seating. And the Bread was extra. But honestly, it was worth the price. We'll come back again. read more

We randomly stumbled upon this hidden gem. We were greeted with smiles and sat quickly on a busy night. Victoria was our server and she explained the menu and help me decide. My daughter is 7 and they were very accommodating. I ordered the lemon mushroom raviolis and it did not disappointed. The manager I believe name Alberto came and checked on us at the table and make sure our food was up to quality which is really nice to see a hands-on manager. Pasta was so delish! Came here spontaneously on a Monday night and were basically seated immediately. I got the spaghetti with the veal and pork meatballs and oh my gosh they were so tender and flavorful. The dish was a bit plain otherwise since it's spaghetti so it's pretty standard. They do have a standard of living surcharge of 4% added on to the bill that they say is not a tip, but I think that's extremely unfair. Piatti should be paying its employees anyways. With the high price, it's hard to justify standard pasta. read more

Came in as a walk-in on a Sunday night and was pretty surprised that there was availability for a table for two. It had to be outside though, which initially had me concerned of the cold. Luckily there were many heat lamps outside and it was sufficiently warm. Shortly after we were seated we accidentally said yes to having some bread as appetizer (which, as a heads up, costs ~$5, NOT complimentary). We went along with it though when we saw how good it was. It was warm, fresh, and super soft and fluffy on the inside. The dipping oil was also very good, just a bit spicy with some vinaigrette, chili oil, cilantro. Normally I hate vinaigrette based sauces, but this was so good we asked for more to go with the main course and to take home. I had the cannelloni which looked very unassuming in the pictures. The taste, however, could not be more different. It's got braised short ribs based within sheets of the lasagna, and red sauce throughout. There's plenty of cheese, and the sauce is not too overpowering in tomato flavor, and the braised short ribs rather than regular ground beef brings it a flavor that's unmatched with any other lasagna type dishes you may have tried in the past. My girlfriend had the linguini with clams, and this was actually a custom order that they were able to accommodate; surprisingly many other restaurants in SD don't quite have this dish on the menu. It's got white wine, lots and lots of big chopped garlic pieces. The clams have a lot of garlic flavor as well, very nicely done. I would definitely come back in the future. read more

I've been to many Italian places and this place stands out because it sits in a cute, not so busy part of La Jolla. I also have to add that I loved the scenic drive, with the backdrop of ocean and sunset, as I navigated the windy streets heading to the restaurant. As you arrive, a small portion of the street that this restaurant faces, is blocked off to allow pedestrians to freely walk amongst the restaurants. Parking can be challenging, but luckily, I was able to find some parking about a block away. The restaurant is classically appointed with white cloth draped tables and smartly dressed waiters and waitresses. The items are reasonably priced for La Jolla, surprisingly. Apps: PEI mussels. That saffron leek sauce....prepare yourself to dip away at this with the accompanying bread. So delicious and you are provided with an abundance of mussels. This can be easily shared with three people. House bread: This was okay. I love bread but this one didn't stand out to me very much. Main: I chose the Papperdelle pasta as recommended by my fellow Yelpers. I'm so glad I listened to you all! Although the consistency of the broth was thin, the dish was so darned good! The sauce consists of white wine, lemon, and saffron. A simple sauce, but it was amazingly tasty! The combination of all the ingredients worked with this dish and I loved the rustic feel, like I was dining in Italy. I did get to taste one of the house specials, the risotto with bell peppers and Italian sausage. This was good, but it was not wow me good like the Papperdelle pasta. Dessert: Tiramisu. This is a staple dessert in any Italian restaurant and this one didn't disappoint. Sitting on a pool of sweet cream, the dessert was soft and moist. It reminded me a Tres Leches cake because of the sweet cream. Overall, this is a nice Italian spot tucked away in the scenic hills of La Jolla. read more

What is the corkage?
Our corkage is $25/750ml, with a maximum of 2 750ml bottles per party. We do ask the wine be something we don't offer on our wine list & needs to be unopened

You have to look for street parking ... OR use the public car park by La Jolla Shores Beach and walk to Piatti.

Substituting pastas is not a problem at all.
How are people getting custom menus? In the pictures some peoples menus say "Happy Birthday" or "Happy Anniversary" how did they get that?

What time does dinner service begin?
we serve lunch from 110-4 and dinner S-Th until 10pm and F & Sa until 11pm. We also serve a brunch Sat and Sun from 10-2pm.
Let's clarify if they are dog friendly or not?
We are dog friendly at lunch and brunch (excluding holidays). We only allow service dogs during the dinner hours.
What is the corkage fee for a magnum?
