Pickity Place is a wonderful place to drive to, to shop at and to eat at. I really didn't understand the other review that said the portions were tiny. You get a five course meal and they are proportionate to five courses. I actually eat nothing before I go because I always leave stuffed! The food is delicious and I like that you have a choice between a vegetarian option or meat option for your entree. I also do not have any idea why another reviewer said it was over priced. It is actually comparable or even slightly cheaper than many chain restaurants out there. Additionally, I had been to another herb/farm to table type place and was horrified when I found out the price was $60+ per person! Pickity is definitely mine and my husband's favorite place to go. We try to go as often as once a month. Some months we have gone twice. We absolutely love the charm of the venue, the taste and quality of the food and beverages and the service we get. Enjoyed a wonderful lunch from the August menu with my boyfriend today. I'd been to Pickity Place multiple times before, but it was my boyfriend's first time. While we waited for staff to ring the bell for our 2 o'clock lunch to start, we strolled about the beautiful gardens and poked around the small gift shops, including the greenhouse with an abundance of different herbs for sale. We were seated at a quaint table in the corner of the restaurant, and enjoyed their crackers and Boursin spread. Next came the small cup of summer greens soup (which was fantastic), followed by a deconstructed Caprese salad that had a delightful vinaigrette dressing. For a beverage we both had the raspberry orange iced tea, which was a little sweet for my boyfriend but I thought was perfect. For the entree, I had the summer vegetable stack and my boyfriend had the fried chicken with cheddar chipotle grits. Both were fantastic! Fresh ingredients and bold flavors. For dessert was a summer berry galette that was the perfect end to the meal. On our way out we looked at the restaurant's most defining feature aside from the gardens, which is the Little Red Riding Hood room (the cottage served as inspiration for the illustrator of the Little Golden Book edition). This restaurant is scenic, with a bit of a fun history (and even a scavenger hunt for kids!) and a truly gourmet experience. I really enjoy Pickity Place. It's quaint and lovely and the food is always so good and fresh. My recent visit was with a mom's group and I believe everyone was impressed (many first-timers) but I'll only share my opinions. First, they were very accommodating for our party. Two people had food allergies, which they easily worked around. I had to call a couple of times to confirm allergies, number of people in our party, payment, etc. Every phone interaction was pleasant and helpful. The August menu was delicious which an boursin dip/crackers (GF for one in our party), a summer greens soup that was fresh and amazing, a salad, bagel slices with an herb butter...just yum. The fried chicken entree was also pretty amazing with a cheddar chipotle grits that I completely enjoyed, even though I am typically not a grit person. The only thing I personally didn't care for was the dessert, which was a summer berry galette. It looked lovely and many people in our party enjoyed it but I personally thought it was too heavily spiced. Obviously just a personal preference things and with my 5-star review, you can see I don't hold it against them! Oh, and the lavender lemonade is always to die for (and they keep it coming!). The portions are not huge but "just right". We were there on a fantastic day and were able to walk the beautiful grounds, which is all part of the experience. I see where one person commented about being "herded in" and another that the menu is very limited. Yes, to both of those things. But having the limited menu and limited seatings is really how they are able to perfect their menus, IMO, and give the best overall experience. This was my first time there with a group and I will note two things that weren't exactly what I expected (but again, overall it was still a 5-star experience so these are just my personal thoughts): 1) our party was broken up into two tables. I guess I expected one long table or two pushed together tables. While they were next to each other, we were still 2 tables. It seems the largest table will accommodate 6. I've made that mental note and will plan accordingly if we do this again - maybe by rotating some seats after the 2nd/3rd course. Or maybe just limit our party to 6. 2) For parties of 10 or more they add the tax/gratuity for one set per person price. They calculate the gratuity at 20% of the after-tax total. Personally I would have tipped 20% on the after-tax total anyway because it's just how I do things (easier than nitpicking over pennies), but I know some people get upset about that so now you know. We have been going here for 30 years or more and have seen it evolve over the years. This is the home where the author of Little Red Riding Hood lived. If you come from Boston or even Nashua, it truly is a ride "through the woods." The only issue is the "woods" are now populated with houses. Initially this was a gift shop, garden with animals and a bedroom in the house with the big bad wolf in the bed. If the geese are still there, stay away because they will bite. Around 15 years ago they added a restaurant. This is a fun place to go, especially if you have very young kids or grandkids with you. The restaurant food is healthy and quite good. If you want to eat here you should call in advance for reservations. Parking can be an issue on popular weekends. Many people travel an hour or more to go there, so it is quite a popular place. You will see lots of CT, MA, RI, NY, ME, PA, NJ, and VT license plates in the parking lot. read more

My two sisters, niece and I were having a wonderful reunion after visiting the charming Harrisville Designs, in Harrisville, NH, followed by an impromptu tour of Ben's Sugar Shack when we happened upon a sign for Pickity Place. After traveling the winding road on our new adventure, we finally arrived at our destination and were all charmed by the incredibly magical tree outside of the Red Riding Hood House and the surrounding property. We ventured into the gift shop and made some purchases and were informed of the luncheon that was to be served relatively soon and the cashier urged us to not miss out on the opportunity to dine there, after all, "You must eat there at least once in your lifetime!" My two sisters entered first, without incident, and my niece (who is 40 years old) and I took a few minutes longer. I opened the solid black door to enter and was immediately faced by a second solid black door. Being the fun-loving family that we are, the appearance of the second closed door took me and my niece by surprise, i.e., we cracked up laughing hysterically. Apparently laughing is not allowed at the Pickity Place Restaurant, for as I walked into the tiny, packed room I was immediately motioned to "lock my lips," by another patron. I was completely taken aback by such a rude gesture from a woman who looked to be probably within five years of my age, and I'm a grandmother of five, that I backed up into the foyer with my niece to tell her what a rude gesture had been given to me. The hostess rudely came out to the foyer and told us that we had to wait in the tiny room with the other patrons. We then returned to the compact room and quietly informed my two sisters of what had occurred and we immediately decided that this was not the place for us to enjoy each others' company, since we couldn't laugh in the foyer, we knew for sure that our joviality would have been shunned upon in the dining room. We left quietly and on our way out, my niece considerately informed the hostess that we would not be dining there, to which the hostess replied, "What?!) You will not be dining with us?!" My niece confirmed that fact and then turned to leave. The aforementioned lip-locking, stodgy, woman muttered loudly, as she nudged her companion, "See! I told you!" My normally quiet and reserved niece did not accept that comment. She stopped next to the woman and said, "Excuse me. Next time you should wait until I'm out of ear-shot before you open your mouth about others.!" The atmosphere in that tiny room, which held at least 20 others before we entered, was eerily quiet, uninviting and not charming at all. We were perplexed by the gestures of the eye-rolling hostess and lack of life of the occupants, each of which would probably do well as figures in Trudeau's Museum. Who would ever think that some lighthearted laughter would cause such a negative reaction when everyone there was looking to enjoy a meal. Your employee's cold behavior towards four grown women cost your restaurant to lose our minimum of $100.00 meal. Obviously you will never get a recommendation from any of us to dine at your restaurant. After dining elsewhere and returning home, we read some reviews and realized that we may have been fortunate to miss dining at Pickity Place. read more

Down a very long dirt road is the BEST restaurant on the East coast! Who knew Mason, New Hampshire was home to a chef who rivals any I have ever encountered. Every one of the five courses was outstanding. Inventive without sacrificing taste. Local ingredients and brilliant use of herbs, made each forkful a delight. I am undecided as to how to rate the food. I first went there several years ago and it immediately became my "go to place." Cousins flying in from Calif....make a reservation at Pickety Place; getting together with the girls....same. I have pictures of us with most of my favorite people taken in front of the big tree in front of the the restaurant. It is much pricier than most lunches, but delicious and a wonderful experience. Then my husband and I decided to go there for our 42nd anniversary a couple of years ago. His ravioli was not as good as canned (and I consider that putrid), I don't recall what I got but it was literally inedible. I was astonished and I spoke to the waitress whose only response was, "It's a new chef." She said it in a way that inferred that I should be sympathetic, Close to 40 bucks for a salad and a strawberry shortcake does not arouse my sympathy! I emailed the specifics of my complaints and never even received and acknowledgement. I would so love to go and have one of their lovely meals again, but it is too expensive to go on a gamble. I need to know it will be good and I can't be sure. read more

Pickity Place used to be an enchanting destination for my family back when a 16, 17 and 18.95 per person for lunch (not dinner) price applied. Though the food was good and atmosphere relaxed, the lack of menu choice (except for the vegetarian alternative to the monthly entree) and the unarguably Lillipution portions (the dinner wear is actually scaled down to accommodate the small portions) always detracted from the experience. I cannot imagine or comment on the owners modus to consciously raise the price to a staggering $21.95 per person in the middle of a recession when food price increases have been no where near this level of inflation. I know of no other restaurant that has done anything but try to keep prices steady. Let's put it all in perspective now. Add to The $21.95 an almost commy 9% New Hampshire meals tax and a 20% tip on top of that and you can now treat your family to the experience of dinning at the Ritz or Four Seasons for lunch, with a menu choice, for about the same money. Or if you prefer local, try the "soup to nuts" offering of the Mile-Away restaurant not to far away. read more

You get a choice of two entrees, all the other courses are the same for everyone. It helps to expand you palette and EVERYTHING is ALWAYS amazing, even if you don't expect you will like what they are serving. Quaint setting and location, friendly staff. DELICIOUS food. We go every month (the menu changes monthly). Each course is quite small, but you leave full after the entire meal. (crackers and dip, bread, soup, salad, entree, AND dessert). i am not sure what people who gave it one star are used to dining at, but for a $25 meal, you get a great array of different courses, and leave feeling satisfied, but not sick because you over-indulged. I have never had a bad meal here (or even a bad course) and my mother (who is very judgmental about restaurant food, and almost always has criticisms to dole out LOVES the food, and comes back here every month. read more

I just had my first experience at Pickity Place today for my Grandmother's birthday. It is a beautiful and quaint location. The food was so good and I especially enjoyed the lavender lemonade. I was however, disappointed in service we received. I felt very rushed when eating because you are put on a time constraint based on when their next seating is. When the bill came, out server informed us that one of their computers wasn't working properly and she had to swipe our card three times and it still wouldn't go through. After calling the bank my mother discovered that the payment did indeed go through not once, but twice. She showed her bank statement to the restaurant who told her they didn't have her payment and she would need to provide another way to pay for the meal. We tried to explain to the manager by showing her the bank statement that the payment went through and we were actually charged twice for the meal. They did not accept this and my Grandmother then had to supply her debit card. The same thing happened with her card before they decided they should try the computer system that actually works. We were so frustrated by the end of our conversation with the manager and the server that it ruined our meal. My mother later had to call her bank to have them cancel the charges o her card. I went to this restaurant with friends on a perfect spring day. It made the setting of this restaurant, rather hidden in the woods, a wonderful place to be. I am giving it 4 stars partly because of the ambiance. If it had been rainy and dreary, I might have given it 3 stars. Over all the food was good. I did like the main course of lasagna with meat Bolognese sauce very much. The sauce seemed quite authentic and like the times I have made it myself from a recipe in an Italian cookbook. In many restaurants, this sauce is nothing like what it is supposed to be. There were a few odd things: like considering a small bowl of dip with some plastic wrapped crackers a course on the menu; the same for 3 small pieces of focaccia bread (1 piece each); and the dessert seemed hard as if it had not totally defrosted. It was a kind of whoopee pie and not very good for that reason. The lunch was a bit rushed because they have "seatings" and need to have you out before the next one. Our seating was at 12:45 and the next one at 2:00. No one was driving us out; and the pace of the service of the food meant you didn't have to keep looking for the waitress, who was nice and friendly. If you have not been there, it seems there is one menu a month at all seatings with a meat and vegetarian option for the entree. Overall, we all enjoyed the day and outing very much. I do think the food could use some improvement, and don't list a dip and some bread as part of the menu. read more

I've been coming to Pickity Place for over twenty years, and its quaint charm never fades. It's a destination spot but the out of the way locale adds to the "over the river and through the woods" charm. While their summer gardens are not to be missed, it's equally lovely throughout fall and beautiful over the Christmas season. The five-course luncheon is always terrific, and it's fun to see how the menu changes each month. Herbs are always featured and the entree always have a vegetarian option. Don't miss the lavender lemonade. The little gift store and garden store (around back) are always fun.. The gardens are lovely and its fun to see how the chefs use the herbs in the luncheon each day. It's a destination local and perfect for moms, girlfriends, or even a special date. My girls always loved peeking into the wolf in grandmother's bed adjacent to the waiting area before lunch. Whenever I have the opportunity I take a friend or family member to Pickety Place; and invariably each time I have made a believer. It is tucked in the woods, lush with plants, flowers and charm. .the gift shoppe is a treasure of unique finds and food items as is the garden shop in the back. A great value for a unique dining experience. I have purchased their cookbooks just for the ideas and meal concepts. The vehicles have license plates from all over New England. Pickety is WONDERFUL and well worth the visit undeniably ! I wish they would expand seating al fresco in the spring, summer and early fall. For over twenty years, my mother and I had a tradition of going to Pickity Place. My mother recently passed, so I brought my sister who had never been before. The luncheon is in three seatings and often very full. There is no bad season at Pickety, the menu is always features healthy, seasonal, fresh whole foods. Diners are started with an appetizer course of crackers and cheese dip (a herb mixture from the chef), a soup, a vegetarian or met dish, a side, and a dessert. On my most recent trip, I had jalepeno dip with cheese, a tortilla soup, a wonderfully tender beef brisket served over corn bread, asparagus, and an expresso cheese cake. We were served mocha coffee (although the ciders and teas are also wonderful). The cottage, which was the inspiration for the 1948 Golden Book edition of Little Red Riding Hood, harkens back to an earlier time in history--its warm, colonial, and simply decorated with herbs and flowers from the gardens. You never feel rushed at Pickety, even though there might be a timed seating after yours. If you arrive early, there are beautiful herb, vegetable, and flower gardens to explore. There are two shops--one that features the herbs and cooking at the restaurant and a garden shop. Pickety Place is set in spectacular natural surroundings that invoke the childhood of yesteryear. My mother loved going to Pickity, and I love honoring her memory by continuing the tradition of bringing family members to such a wonderful place. read more
