The bread was amazing, the vegetables were crisp/fresh, the chicken was tender and the cheesecake was the best i've ever had. Only complaint was a 30+ min delay in seating and a flavorless watered down decaf mocha coffee. Everything else was perfect and I will definitely go back. Oh! And the waitress was wonderful. Had a great time with my one year old, Aunt and grandmother! We dined during the October 2015 menu. The unsweetened orange iced tea was refreshing the lavender lemonade was lovely. Jalapeño cracker dip was ok, smokey minestrone was good. The salad was a bit overdressed the bread was fluffy, I had the butternut squash lasagne and it was creamy and delicious! There were items on the set menu that I don't normally like (tomato soup for instance) but they were prepared in such a way that made them delicious. Pickity Place is a bit out of the way (about an hours ride from where I am), but well worth the journey. It's offers a monthly, 5 course, prixe fixed menu, and is surrounded by beautiful gardens and two great shops. Whether you're looking for spices and herbs, teas, gift items, or plants and garden accessories to bring back to your own home, it's a wonderful place to visit! The food is always, ALWAYS delicious. The only problem I have ever had is wishing I could get BOTH entree items (which is why going with a friend, each getting one and then sharing is a fantastic option!)! I haven't gone recently because I've realized I have a gluten sensitivity (which I think, HOPE can be reversed), and passing on the homemade bread would be torture, but I hope to one day, as soon as I can, go back enjoy this wonderful little restaurant again! The restaurant is actually housed in the little red cottage that inspired Elizabeth Orton Jones' illustrations for "Little Red Riding Hood." A great destination spot in the Currier and Ives section of Southern New Hampshire, Pickity Place is a combination cafe/gift shop/garden center/greenhouse high up in the hills of Mason, NH. It is about as remote a place as you'll find within, say, an hour and a half of Boston, and going there gives a real sense of discovery. The gift shop is a highlight, with all kinds of items available, from herbs to spices to cookbooks to tea, as well as a lot of your basic "gift shop" items. The garden center and greenhouse isn't bad, though when we recently went, they didn't have a huge selection of plants. And the cafe is a nice read more

The 5 course herbal gourmet lunch was amazing and truly one of the best meals I've ever eaten. I loved everything served to us (we enjoyed their August menu). I love, love, love the food here. Even when the menu sounds just "ok" I never leave disappointed! It is nestled away but I live in town so the "trek" is not an issue for me. Each Christmas my in-laws eagerly await a gift certificate to lunch here! If you plan for the ride and have a reservation you will not be sorry you came! The only thing I would say that needed improving would be the chairs. A little wobbly. The meal outstanding. This is a place where you go and slowly eat and enjoy the specially prepared menu. Amazing. A hidden gem. The way this place works is that every month, they feature a different prix-fixe menu consisting of six courses (crackers/dip, soup, salad, bread, entrée and dessert). The price is $21.95 pp which includes beverages. The spiced tea is my personal favorite. I come here monthly and get stamps on my frequent flyer card (buy 6 lunches, get one free). The service here is wonderful, and the food is quality. You won't be disappointed! It's best if you make a reservation ahead of time. And if you get a chance to visit the gift shop and greenhouse, you may meet Rosemary and Sage, the adorable resident cats. read more

I took an out-of-town friend here for her birthday. We had a reservation for the 12:45 pm lunch seating. The place is not that hard to find at all (we used GPS). The grounds are beautiful (despite the rainy day we had) and the lunch was absolutely delicious - wait staff was extremely friendly and efficient. The gift shops, greenhouse, and grounds are very nice. My only negative comment is that it is a bit confusing as to the seating procedure once you arrive. Apparently, you have to 'check in' once you get there (even if you have a reservation) so that they do not give your table way, which I thought would be odd if you have a reservation. We checked in, no problem, but then weren't told what to do from there. We learned, from a frequent guest standing near us, that they ring a bell when we can be seated. I guess it would have been nice to be informed of that when we checked in, or made the reservation. The waiting area for the dining room is also very small, however, there are places to wait outside should the weather be cooperative. Overall, a very nice experience and one worth repeating to taste more of their delicious menu items. read more

I love this spot. Great ride from the city to spend a couple hours in tranquillity. The herb gardens are beautiful and they sell their potted herb plants for a reasonable price. Last time I bought lavender, Rosemary, and chives. They're growing awesome at home. Lunch there is always amazing. I recommend this hidden gem to everyone. read more

I love this place. The food is excellent quality. The vegetables are grown in their gardens. It's unique and quaint, more a ladies type place, though men do attend. I love the history...this restaurant being the grandmother's house in the 1948 Golden Book addition of Little Red Riding Hood. That's why this place is "in the woods". I've eaten here upwards of 10 times now, since it's both a Mother's Day tradition and a favorite day trip. I was trying to explain it to a friend recently, and found it difficult- it's a very unique dining experience. First you drive uphill so far on unpaved roads, you start to worry you'll be eaten by horror-movie hill folk. (Start your GPS at the beginning of the drive; once you're near Mason you won't have good enough reception to get it going.) Finally you arrive at this adorable cluster of old buildings surrounded by herb gardens. We make sure we're there early enough to browse the gift shop, where they sell herbs, teas, dip mixes and assorted tchotchkes. Seating is at specific times, so a reservation is generally recommended- there can't be more than 15 or 20 tables in there. They ring a bell to announce the seating (and draw everyone up from the gardens. I suppose), and the meal is rustic, simple and delicious. There's just one menu- you choose only your entree and your drink. (Bring your own alcohol; they have only an assortment of sweetened and unsweetened teas.) Every time we go, someone in our party looks at the monthly menu and declares that they don't like something on it and wish they could choose a substitute. (Ew, I hate coconut desserts. Oh man, I don't like broccoli soup. I wonder if I can get something other than polenta.) EVERY time, they try the thing and end up loving it. It's very simple, unpretentious food, but delicate and thoughtfully prepared. I think the $22/person price is a bargain. read more

Loved the food and the self guided tour of the grounds & greenhouse. It's expensive but well worth eating healthy organic foods. Ask to reserve the glass enclosed dining area. Shop for herbs and things in the gift shop. My Mother enjoyed eating here the previous month and wanted to return for her birthday. The menu changes every month. The server over heard my sister mention that I couldn't eat bread. The server immediately, offered to bring gluten free rolls. Pickity Place was fantastic. My GPS brought us the long way, through the woods, on fresh snow, and it was a beautiful drive. The cute little cottage, with the creaky floorboards and low ceilings set an amazing atmosphere. It was just my wife and I, so the seating was perfect. We could tell that there were a number of "regulars" there, but the conversations they were having with the wait staff. Oh, and the wait staff could not have been more friendly. It was worth the 90 minute drive from Boston. The food was fantastic, perfect portion sizes, and great flavor combinations. I highly recommend making your reservation. **If you are looking for a satisfying, delicious, 5 course meal then the Pickity Place is not for you.** The other day I made the long and seemingly never ending drive up to Pickity Place. With high hopes and the expectation that a satisfying and fresh five-course meal awaited me, I was excited about my first time visiting the "Little Red Riding Hood" House. I had made reservations prior to my visit for the 3:30 seating (they only offer meals at certain service times which you make reservations for instead of having a serve as you come type system) and I arrived right around 3:00. Upon arrival I was told that the dining room was running a bit behind with the 2:00 seating and that it would probably be around 3:45 when we could be seated in there. At that point that was perfectly fine with me and I was able to kill a good amount of time at their gift shop which was honestly much better than the food I received. By the time I was seated in the dining area it was 4:35, an hour later than the original time set. At the table I was greeted by a large container of water, some cups, and a small plate with yogurt dip and two toothpicks containing three minuscule cubes of fruit each. This was the first COURSE. The yogurt dip was fantastic, but I only got to taste a tiny amount given the fact that this portion was for two people and I barely had enough fruit to even sample it. Given the fact that they categorize this as a course, I was shocked. The next "course" was Red Potato and Chives Soup. The above title was all that was listed on the menu and so I was surprised when the soup was brought out with large pieces of bacon sprinkled on top. It should be noted that the portion of soup was again, minuscule, but nonetheless they should have stated that the soup was NOT vegetarian somewhere on the menu, especially since they already cater to that audience through their two entree choices. Disappointed, seeing as how myself and the person I was dining with are both vegetarians, I asked if it was possible for it to be brought out without bacon. She went back to the kitchen and stated that the soup had a chicken broth base, so that course was basically a bust. The waitress did offer to make the salad larger in order to compensate, which was at first appreciated until, that is, I tasted the salad. The third course AKA the salad, was a step above a Zaxby's side salad. I mean from what I was led to believe based on their description I expected so much more and yet in comparison I have had better salads at Panera Bread. Perhaps it simply didn't suit my taste, but nonetheless it was still disappointing. Now before I get to the entree, I should note that the bread course between the salad and the entree was unbelievable. The bread and butter it came with was fantastic (especially after that salad) but between the two of us we each only got one tiny sliver of a slice. I understand that due to the nature of the meal style you do not what to fill up your patrons too much, but at this point it was ridiculous. The entree was as equally disappointing as the salad. It had the potential to be superb and yet all I found was a small amount of vegetables, cheese, and unremarkable marinara sauce smushed between two large polenta cakes that were tasteless and bland. On the side with the entree were green beans which came out undercooked and at room temperature. If you're not going to cook the side vegetable properly, then please do not bother to include it. Overall the fourth (and main, might I remind you) course was, you guessed it, disappointing. Finally came dessert which, shockingly, was quite good. Overall, the final course was much less of a disappointment. I will compliment the Pickity Place on their raspberry orange tea and their spiced tea as both were extremely good. This does not, however, make up for the fact that their menu offers far too little details about the food which you are about to consume, the wait staff is completely rehearsed and sound as though they're still trying to convince you that the food is good even though the food itself should achieve that, the best parts of the meal came in ridiculously small portions, and the remaining components were simply not satisfying. I had to wait over an hour just to be seated because other patrons were taking far too long to leave and yet I was rushed throughout the meal. I had barely eaten the salad when bread was brought out and then all of a sudden the entree was upon us and because of that what was meant to be a five course meal was only finished over the timespan of 45 minutes to an hour. Pickity Place, I am honestly shocked about the fact that you manage to stay in business when your food is subpar, your prices are far too expensive and your portions leave guests completely unsatisfied. After I left the restaurant I was still hungry. When I am spending $60 for lunch, I want to leave satisfied, without the craving for better food. read more

One of my lunch experiences from last summer stands in stark contrast to my usual Mediterranean fare, both in atmosphere and in gustation. When my mom invited me to eat lunch with her friend from work I was eager to join them. We made the eighty minute journey to Greenville, New Hampshire by car, passing aromatic pines and radiant lakes; I felt like we were in one of those "VisitNH" commercials. As we approached the restaurant (I use the term leniently) via a steep, unpaved road, I spotted cows grazing in distant farms, and red pick-up trucks lining the horizon. I was enjoying the idyllic rugged-pastoral environment, and I expected my meal to be of the same nature. We turned left at a sign that said "Pickity Place" (which upon leaving seemed to say "PICKity Place" but that could have been my mind) and a small red cottage came into sight. "Cute," I thought, but what awaited me was far from charming. Everything that this place stands for is a contradiction of my food beliefs. You don't eat when you see fit, rather, there are three seatings at 11:30, 12:45, and 2:00. We arrived at half-past twelve and there was already a mass of diners crowding the entrance, ready to gormandize. Hold on, gormandize is too harsh a verb for this mass of seventy-plus year-old, denture-wearing grandmothers and their daughters. I was probably the only person there that didn't dye my hair or sport white locks. My hunt for any men or people that were pre-midlife-crisis was comparable to my experiences with "Where's Waldo?" books: futile. Startled by the piercing clanging of a bell, (they probably made it louder for the ninety percent of the crowd that was hard of hearing) I jumped back, striking my foot against a tacky garden fairy decoration. Hopefully the skewed age-range and my sore ankle would not detract from what I was anticipating would be a pleasant lunch. The three of us joined in the cue to enter the dining room: I'll spare you the gruesome details of the décor (dried flowers and herbs hanging from every place possible, pictures of fairies and story book characters, etc.) and move onto "lunch." Waiting at the table was a basket of individually wrapped Pepperidge Farm™ crackers and Danish lemon dill dip: the "first course." After sampling the dip I found my throat to be parched, and my only relief was water infused with sprigs of herbs. As I inhaled, the smell of herbs with a hint of estrogen invaded my lungs. There was no escape. A waitress (there were no waiters, obviously) crossed the room carrying a stack of clanging plates and my jaw dropped: she was dressed like some sort of fairy princess, complete with puerile braids and a crown of tacky plastic flowers. After making it through the soup and salad courses (not up to par), and a bread course (?), another waitress came out of the kitchen (or was it some sort of fairy abode?) balancing the next course: an overcooked chicken appendage on a bed, excuse me, sloppy pile, of "plantain wild rice" infused with, you guessed it, more herbs. What I wouldn't do for my mom's paella, which started to seem rather "masculine" now, or a medium-raw cut of solomillo, dripping with blood. I was engrossed with the imagery of meat sputtering on a skillet when the host rushed through the room, encouraging the waitresses to hurry because they were behind schedule; the 2:00 seating would be starting soon, and another mass of people of the same gender and age structure were impatiently waiting. I gulped down some sort of herbal tea concoction, scorching my tongue in the process, and quickly finished the summer berry pie. As soon as we paid for the "five-course gourmet herbal luncheon," as advertised on the website that I should have visited prior to coming here, a fairy-waitress hybrid escorted us out and chimed, "Have a pickity day!" It pained me to follow the ideals of this eating establishment, and furthermore, the dining dogmas of a culture that stands in stark contrast to the Mediterranean style. However, I did so out of respect for my mom's friend who was so eager to show us her favorite place. I wanted to refuse the poorly prepared chicken or start tearing down sprigs of herbs from the over-decorated fairy tale walls, but I resisted. The dining environment was not tasteful and the wait staff pranced around with forced smiles that I could taste in my soup (the "chefs" seemed to throw together various components on a plate without taking the recipient into consideration); I took this rebellious tension, masked it with good manners, and realized that while some people don't want anything more from a meal than protein, Vitamin C, and polite conversation, I never wanted to have a lunch like this again. There is a charming gift shop with lots of country-esque doo-dads which were not as appealing to me as the little bags of dried herbs which were quite reasonably priced. I will definitely be back to do some shopping for those things. Husband and I had reservations for a lunch during the week between Christmas and New Years, and the place was full for the second seating. We had some warm beverages (cider for me, mocha for him) with our bread, crackers and dip. The menu changes monthly and offered several options for each course, and they were tasty and portioned nicely so we could savor dessert. At $16 per person I truly expected little tidbits of god knows what, but this was a satisfying, delicious lunch. We'll definitely go again. This is one of my favorite places in NH. There is always a delicious menu, which is vegetarian friendly, and i always leave stuffed to the gills with wonderful food. They use the herbs they grow in their gardens in their recipes, and it is well worth your time to take a stroll around the gardens when the weather is nice. The shop by the house always has cute goodies, including herbs, cooking supplies, tea, jewelry, pet stuff, etc... There's another store that sells herbs too. read more

Excellent. Having brunch here was a purely magical experience. We arrived early for the 2 pm lunch, and had time to walk around and see Grandmother's room off the dining room which is absolutely adorable. You are served a soup and salad and are given a choice between two entrees. I chose the orange chicken with jasmine rice and skewered veggies. Everything was cooked to perfection and you can tell with the presentation alone that Pickity takes pride in what they do. There's an herb garden across a spacious grassy courtyard, following the brick walkway around the dining hall (past an adorable wooden birdhouse) you reach the Herbs & Gift Shop featuring many of the spices, soups, sauces, dips and teas available for purchase that are served in the restaurant. There are soaps, lotions, cards, socks, jewelry and all sorts of goodies in there. This is a very classy and quaint place to have a lunch meeting, catch up with an old friend or just go, dine and enjoy the craftsmanship of good food! Five+ stars! read more

Pickity Place, I rate this restaurant not on the experience of dining there but on the experience I had with trying to make a reservation. I called three weeks in advance of the day I wanted to reserve. I was treated respectfully by Nicole, made the reservation for 16 guests at 12:45 pm on a Wednesday & provided a credit card for 50% ($250.64) of the total cost ($501.28). Not a problem however, I asked if it would be possible for us to exchange gifts during that time. She said she was unsure if that would be ok due to the scheduled dining times (3 per day, 11:30, 12:45 & 2 pm) & tight seating arrangements in the dining area. She said typically they recommend the last seating for things similar to this but she would check with the manager and get back to me. I told her we had no problem coming at the later time. I received a respectful message back saying that the "party" we wanted would not work because of the dining area followed by an apology & clearly stated we no longer had a reservation but extended an invite to come in & visit Pickity Place at another time. I was confused & felt I needed to contact them to clarify the message, confirm the cancellation of the reservation & that my credit card would not be charged the 50%. I called spoke with Alice, she confirmed there was no reservation or credit card information on file. I asked if they can accommodate large parties her reply was up to 50 guests. So I proceed to explain the above noted & she asked who I spoke with. She then told me she worked there one day a week & was not sure of the situation but then confirmed again that there was no reservation and closed the conversation with another invite to come in & visit them in the future. Ok why would I try them at another time when I couldn't get in the first time I tried. I also ask what business turns away $500. Sorry deal breaker!!!! read more

What a beautiful hideaway! My mom and her friends are ladies who lunch here pretty frequently, and for my birthday my mom took me here. (Let them know it's your birthday and you get a free packet of herbs!) The herbs they grow here fresh, and preserve year-round, are the shining star of the food. The cooking is simple so the flavors all shine through. It's good rustic eats with a symphony of herbs to complement the delightful flavors. You have to drive into the middle of nowhere to find this place, and while it used to be a drive full of shacks with "yankee yards" (to put it politely) you'll now pass a concrete factory and a bunch of mcmansions (with some ENVIABLE valley views!) and wayyy at the end of the asphault road, it turns to dirt for a bit -- and then there's Pickety Place. Definitely it always feels like you stumbled upon it, but it's there, very inviting and comforting. Recommend getting reservations, even in the depths of November this place was busy. Be sure to both make a reservation and check the monthly menu before you go. You only have two choices to make: 1) which beverage (loved their lavender lemonade) and 2) regular or vegetarian entree. This would not be an ideal choice for people with allergies or food intolerances since everyone is served the same foods and meals are not made to order. You can ask for a sauce on the side with certain entrees, but that's about it. The setting is lovely and the gift shop is fun to visit. You get a five course meal and they are proportionate to five courses. I actually eat nothing before I go because I always leave stuffed! The food is delicious and I like that you have a choice between a vegetarian option or meat option for your entree. I also do not have any idea why another reviewer said it was over priced. It is actually comparable or even slightly cheaper than many chain restaurants out there. Additionally, I had been to another herb/farm to table type place and was horrified when I found out the price was $60+ per person! Pickity is definitely mine and my husband's favorite place to go. We try to go as often as once a month. Some months we have gone twice. We absolutely love the charm of the venue, the taste and quality of the food and beverages and the service we get. We love this place so much, we served the drinks at our cocktail hour at our wedding on the 4th. We used the mixes as wedding favors as well. Everyone loved them!
