Since my last review, the restaurant has definitely stepped it up. I guess they had a momentary downfall. I love going there.

I'm from out of town and my friend was excited to take me here. I was surprised to see where it was when we pulled up, but hey....it's kind of refreshing to not go to one of many restaurants lined up in front of you for your choosing. As soon as I walked in, I felt like I was in this cozy yet very modern restaurant. Even though we didn't have reservations, the bartender helped us to get first-come-first-serve seats at the bar. I didn't make many choices that night because my friend just kept ordering from the menu. I don't think I even saw the menu! That's totally outside my comfort zone, but I trust her choices since we are both foodies and just want with it. Same for drinks. The bartender offered me a taste of a few wines to see what I like, then kept my glass full with a variety of wines that I really enjoyed. You can also choose to do a half glass. And no, he didn't just choose the most expensive wines....all reasonable. The food. Oh my goodness. I am usually a person that will say, "Yes, that was tasty....but the portions were too small". And if you're like me, you might still feel that way here. BUT, trust me. Make several menu choices and share with someone. You will get to try so many more things. Even with a smaller menu, we left completely satisfied and full. Bacon Praline. WOW. Wow. It was cured bacon with this sweet yet smoky flavor. The flavor was amazing. You won't be disappointed. Bacon wrapped asparagus. Just the right flavoring...sometime asparagus can seem bland to me but I didn't even think once about wishing I had salt. Pappardelle. The sauce....noodles.... meat....just the right combination. Felt like comfort food. Pork Cannelloni. We finished off with this one and the bartender said it was his favorite. Actually three of the staff members walked by and commented on our plate as being their favorite! I'm glad we ended on this one because it was rich....but the texture and taste was incredible. Smooth, rich, comforting. Even though I thought I was full, somehow we had dessert! We did a trio of ice creams: Honey Lavender, Pistachio, and Caramel. The flavors we're so distinct and very bold....in a good way! My favorite one was the pistachio and I was surprised because I've never liked and pistachio ice cream I've tried. Service was great. Never annoying. Always helpful. Conversational in an I-actually-want-to-talk-to-you sort of way. Shout out to Atticus for taking care of us tonight. read more

What a beautiful evening filled with great food and wine. Passed through Los Alamos on our way to look at wedding venues in the area. My fiancée and I decided to get dinner at this place and we were floored. Everything was great and we had one of the most romantic dinners in the back, under a a tree. We even want them to cater our wedding! Not sure if that's their thing though. The staff was spectacular and very warm. They even gave my fiancée a blanket for her legs as the night progressed. I was so excited to try this place because of the ambiance but left disappointed as the prices aren't worth what you get, our server was not attentive, and the wait times for our meals were *very* long. I want to say maybe it was an off night because it was Valentine's Day but it wasn't very busy. We were there for around 3 hours (this plus the dim lighting had my partner and I fighting for our lives against sleep), which rendered us unable to do anything for the rest of the night. Unfortunately because of these things, I would not recommend this restaurant. If you want more specifics: We ordered the bread ($10), rabbit carnitas ($20), Pico burger ($26), and the dry aged New York steak ($48). No tiny loaf of bread (it was a little bigger than my fist) is worth $10 and I wish the description or the server would have mentioned it was *loaded* with olives because my partner and I are not the biggest fans. The rabbit carnitas were really good but only included 2 tacos, which is typical pricing for the area but still made me feel a bit robbed since I know it doesn't cost much at all to make that plate. The profit on it must be crazy. The burger was unevenly cooked (worst bites were overdone or raw), there were too many onions (again unevenly cooked), and it was quite dry and boring in flavor -- it needed an aioli or jam. The bites that were cooked medium rare were pretty good but definitely not good enough for the price. I've gotten tastier burgers at diners for much less. The fries, which were very addicting, and bacon were the highlights of the dish. Lastly, the steak plate... That was the biggest disappointment. It was plated beautifully (I would have been able to admire it more if not for how dim the lighting was) but the steak was tiny and unevenly cooked (most of it was not medium rare like I asked), the potatoes were pretty dry and bland, and the sweet potatoes were terrible. I feel so bad saying this but I would have spit them out if I wasn't at a nice restaurant and I had a disposable napkin. Overall a shame because the pieces of steak that were cooked correctly were amazing (I didn't want to ask them to recook it since I already had to wait an hour or so and I just wanted to leave at that point). Made me so upset that I spent $50 just for 2 or 3 good bites. The cab also had a funky smell and aftertaste so I'd recommend getting a different wine off their menu. As for the service: Our server checked on us twice in 3 hours, leaving us without water majority of the time we were there. Other servers actually had to come & fill it for us. One of the times she came to our table, I was not even there so I was unable to ask for anything -- She apparently sparked a full-blown conversation with my partner about how she has been heavily considering switching from her current job to one in his field, which I felt was really unprofessional but in hindsight, is probably a good idea considering the quality of her service. We kept trying and trying to get her attention (we were surprised how she wouldn't even glance our way) and failing and were left asking other servers for help. I actually had to get up and walk across the entire restaurant to the bar once. It was really frustrating, especially having worked as a server in the past and seeing how often she was chatting to coworkers. You should really check on your tables more often than that, especially at a nicer restaurant and especially if your cook is running so behind. Service is SO important and changes the entire experience. It can mean the difference between your guests leaving with a smile and regretting spending their time and money at your establishment. Overall, really disappointed. I wanted to like this place so badly and was so excited to eat here but it's a no from me as the pricing, food, wait times, and service were subpar. Visited this last weekend we were a group of five. The service Haley provided was amazing !!! What a wonderful soul. The mixologist i believe her name was Christina omg she is unbelievable came to your table to explain our drinks ingredients. The whole experience was great! Now lets talk about the food, that French toast is out of this world!!!! The rosemary focaccia bread was served in a skillet, warm crunchy but soft. The burrata cheese was so creamy. Setting and interior decoration is incredible. Romantic. Lovely. The images on their site underestimate the interior beauty of its warm ambiance. Service is great. Sparked a great and sincere conversation with the busboy. He offered to buy us a latte. We were humbled. Waiter exhibited grace in his description of food. The hostess, not as warm, but welcomed us and invited us to explore the restaurant's beautiful outdoor grounds. The food, however, was disappointing, terribly disappointing. We can only speak to the items we ordered, the steak frites ($45) and pork tri tip ($39). Both items came swimming is balsamic vinaigrette. It robbed the meat of its potential, genuine flavor. I would have preferred the food was drenched in A-1 steak sauce instead of vinaigrette. What made it worse was the potatoes in the tri tip were also drenched in vinaigrette. So I couldn't explore any other culinary flavor. My wife's frites (fries) could have come from Chick-a-Fila. In our conversation with the busboy, we discovered (inferred - we may be wrong) that the chef was relatively new and the restaurant might have undergone or is undergoing a tough time securing a resident chef. It shows. This was further reinforced the next day when we went to Los Olivos and a sommelier at a wine tasting room asked us about our experience. We mentioned the food and she confirmed that the food hasn't been up to par as of lately. We were so relief it just wasn't us. Do I recommend this restaurant? Yes, great venue for a romantic night out, particularly if you have the discretionary funds and appreciate vinaigrette in your meat. Otherwise, I would recommend visiting when a new cooking staff is put in place. We also ordered the Salmon Crudo. Nicely presented. But nothing more than salmon ceviche. We also ordered the coffee walnut budino. Took some time to receive it and, unfortunately, it disappointed. The best thing we had was the coffee latte. This review is not meant to be mean. I would encourage anyone to go. Great ambiance. But the food was simply not up to par. We left disappointed having spent $179 for a meal we could have made at home for $35. Will we visit again in the future? I don't know. Maybe in 5 years. read more

We came here to celebrate a very special wedding anniversary. (Noted on the reservation) We last ate here 2 years ago and we thought it was outstanding. We were greeted with a 1/3 of a glass of sparkling. Nice gesture but..1/3 full seemed strange. We ordered elk tartare, duck confit carbonara and cauliflower risotto All dishes were tasty but one-note - lacking the marriage of seasonings that elevate a dish. The waiter was kind in allowing us 2 tastes of wine to accompany our order, and when we didn't like either, we asked for advice. He offered to bring another taste but he was so slow to return that my husband let 2 dishes grow cold waiting (instead of the waiter informing the kitchen to wait while we selected a wine) I simply gave up on wine. We ordered the vegan bucatini on the Tres entrees list. Waiter returned saying it shouldn't be on the menu. When the waiter came by again we asked would the chef be willing to do a different dish with the bucatini. After waiting ...(again) the waiter finally returns to say "The chef isn't here -- the chef isn't going to do that". Odd phrasing. Sigh. We finally had to realize that we were expecting mich more than Pico has to give. It has slipped from a dining experience to a drop-in locals place. We dined at 5:15pm so it wasn't that the place was too busy. The waiter did such a poor job of managing the flow of food and wine that we nearly didn't order dessert. Husband ordered pistachio ice cream. One taste and I realized it had anise or licorice which I don't care for - so I had no more. Waiter never came back to see if we liked it. There was no one in management checking on tables or we would have expressed our disappointment to them. For a restaurant to have been given awards for their outstanding wine list we would have thought we would receive expert guidance. Oh my goodness, where do I begin? We went for brunch and this place is over-the-top excellent! Every single dish we had was perfection, bursting with flavor and freshness. I think we tried almost everything on the menu, but the highlights were definitely the burrata, roasted beets, market salad, and the ooooey gooey cinnamon roll. Our server was such a delight (I can't remember her name), and we chatted forever about all of the great restaurants we love in the area. Located on the main street of small Los Alamos, Pico is somewhere to plan ahead for, especially because it usually fills on the weekends. The renovated interior is housed in an old general store, and items for sale at the front of the restaurant serve true to the heritage. The tables are spaced generously to avoid crowding. The menu is split into small plates, appetizers and main courses. The serving sizes are small enough to try multiple dishes and still have room for dessert. There are also meat and cheese options, and the meat is cured in-house. The owner also owns a winery, so there are plenty of options in that department. The main courses were the highlights, particularly the risotto and the ribeye, although this menu may change. All of the items were thoughtfully designed without being over complicated. Since you'll still have room for dessert, try the fresh cookies and/or some house ice cream afterward! The staff was very nice, and the chef and a manager both came out to greet us. read more

At Pico, their main objective is to lead guests away from the usual road of predictable food, and towards a shared voyage of epicurean delight. At Pico, there is a difference between dining and eating. Chef Drew makes dining an art. When you eat to get most out of your meal, to please the palate, just as well as to satiate the appetite, that my friend, is dining. Found this gem of a place while visiting overnight at an air bnb in Los Alamos. We saw the reviews and knew no matter what we would be in for a treat. Everyone that we encountered there was so nice! Andrea was wonderful and she gave some great recommendations and validated our choices. My favorite was the mushroom salad, which we knew had great reviews and we wouldn't be disappointed. The chocolate chip cookies with vanilla ice cream were perfect. I was with two friends and we shared two uno's and a dos. We each got a tres. Each course had amazing flavor and they paced the food in such a way that we got to enjoy every bite without becoming overly stuffed! I mean we even had dessert! We kept raving after every course and were pleased when Chef Drew came out to say hello. I have to say thank you to the staff at Pinco for all of your fine touches, extra thoughts and efforts because my dinner on Thursday night was one of my favorite dining experiences EVER!!! I've been wanting to dine at Pico ever since the day my sister told me about it (we walked through on a weekday afternoon and was given a little "tour" by the then master chef). FINALLY, I was able to get time off of work, get a reservation and experience it. We ordered everything starting with a cocktails and appetizers, then main dishes, a bottle of wine, dessert and dessert wines!!! Exquisite! All 3 of us loved our meals. I had the local King Salmon and I'll be dreaming of that dish for a long while. The new outdoor dining area is perfect too! Since we are still in the pandemic, we opted for outdoors and it was comfortable. My friend and sister run colder, so they accepted the blanket offer. Our waitress was so cute and polite and helpful with all of our culinary questions. 10 stars for PICO, but I realize I could only give a max of 5. read more

Great food, ambiance, and service.. and a super fun wine program. This place has gone out of it's way to provide fresh, seasonal, and creative dishes with many ingredients coming straight from their garden and hyper-local producers. The interior has a great ambiance and the patio is the perfect shaded place to enjoy lunch (somewhat reminiscent of the old Bell Street Farms back in the day). Our server was incredibly knowledgeable about the food and wines, and she was a perfect balance of being friendly and attentive while also giving us space to enjoy the experience. I have to give a special shout-out to the wine program which had a great selection of wines along with some fun features like a unicorn wine of the day (a fantastic 1984 Vouvray that Sunday). They also allow you to do half-pours of anything on the list so you can try more wines, and have a surprising selection of old and rare offerings as well. Our intention was to stop for lunch but ended up spending 3-4 hours there and must have worked our way through a dozen wines, including some digesitfs dating back to the 50's in some instances. I e been to Pico before COVID. Great food, great service. We scheduled a board retreat for our organization to have dinner at Pico. We were seated by 5 pm and waited almost 2 hours to get our food. The servers are still great, the wait was LONG and not acceptable. I will be back and hope that the kitchen provides for the guests they draw in. read more

We made a reservation not knowing what to expect, and we were blown away by the incredible food, service, hospitality, and atmosphere! He came out of the kitchen to meet us because we couldn't stop talking about our delicious, original, and flavorful meal. We can't recommend Pico enough! Had one of the most amazing dining experiences of our life here. Decided to be a little adventurous and let chef Cameron pick all our dishes. The salads, green beans, salmon crudo, pasta, and ribeye were all delicious. My favorite had to be the homemade pasta, but I think if I was just going to order from the menu specifically I'd probably get down with the steak frites because the fries were killer too. Kace was are server and was so sweet and helpful throughout the night. We had a group of 8 for a birthday and we stayed late but felt nothing but love from the whole team. Wow. This place has just gone downhill. Last time I came here before covid they had a different chef. I would have gladly payed these prices for the food I had back then but I have no idea who this new guy is but he sure seems to think everyone should. Almost $400.00 later with mediocre overpriced wine that tasted like a wet towel. Nothing comes with side dishes, The charcuterie plate is dismal, the fries are so heavy and greasy and the truffle flavor is just overwhelming. We went a few weeks ago. The atmosphere was perfect and cocktails were delicious. The service was wonderful. They were out of a few things on the menu but we weren't notified during ordering so we had to adjust our order. Half of the appetizers were great, half weren't so good. The triple fried french fries were the best item of the evening. The steak was way too chewy as was the pork chop. Neither were very appetizing. I hear they have a new chef? I guess we waited too long to try this place. For the price, it wasn't worth it. If they up their food game, this place would be fantastic. I swear the last time I saw this was in Italy!!!! Let's get to the food... OMG the food is spectacular. Really spectacular. I had the elk tartar which was fresh, and rich and salty, please get it, it's fabulous. My date ordered the gem salad, and it was just perfect. The lettuce was sweet and crisp, perfectly paired with the apples and caramelized nuts pecans. Just a stunning salad. I ordered the bone marrow. It was orgasmic. Came with hash!!! Okay in its defense fatty rich bone marrow is always orgasmic, but when you pair it with hash, holy mother of baby Jesus ... the sexiness of that dish is borderline illegal. We ended the meal with a pork chop which like everything in this space (besides the terrible date) did not disappoint! Solid wine list, although for my taste a bit overpriced. Not a great number of choices in the small town but there are definitely alternatives which serve solid cuisine. Incredible food and amazing service. Accidentally stumbled upon this gem. This is a must go to restaurant. Suzie was an amazing waitress and the rest of the staff were too. Suzie was professional and personable, excellent service, really impressed with how all the staff caters all the tables, great team work. A historical land mark building with interesting history, pictures and so cozy. We didn't have reservations but they accommodated us with joy and open arms, we felt at home. EVERYONE was amazing and every dish was delicious. We will definitely be returning. Very clean and inviting. Thanks for a wonderful and cherish-able memory. read more

We recently had the pleasure of experiencing Pico in Los Alamos. It was the perfect ending after visiting wineries in Los Olivos. A friend who is a recent transplant to California from Indiana introduced us to this little gem. In fact, she says it is here favorite restaurant in California! We were not disappointed. My sweetie had the duck and was very pleased with it. Our friend had the corn soup with scallops and was also very happy with the dish. I opted for the steak tartare. It was also of high quality although I did not really like the addition of an herbal oil which gave it a less than optimal mouth feel. Service was superb as was the ambiance. Let me start by saying that we really enjoyed this place. The ambiance, vibes, and food were amazing. We stumbled across this place while staying in Santa Maria. The food options were limited there and we didn't mind the 20 min drive. We were seated immediately, it seemed slow for a Sunday night. However, I feel like it worked in our favor since we found this gem. Our server was nice but I felt like the other guy (not sure his name) was more attentive than our actual server. We had the Lumen standard flight, the wine was yummy. They also had a huge selection that I would like to go back and try. Anyway, now to the food. We started with a charcuterie board. We did the Pick 4, we ended up picking guanciale, pork lomo, idiazabal, and I can't remember the fourth cheese but it was like a brie. It was really amazing. However, this is also the part where I come across the biggest problem I had with the place. The bread they served with the place was burnt. So badly burnt that it overpowered the wonderful flavors of the charcuterie & cheese. I had to ultimately ask for new bread which the other guy, not our server brought since I couldn't get ahold of him. The green garlic risotto was out of this world amazing. It had such bold flavors that complemented each other. It was Sunday Burger Night. We went with the regular burger and added red onion, lettuce, cheddar, wild mushroom, and grilled bacon. Okay, so it happened again! The bread was burnt!!!!! The burger itself was out of this world, we ended up just eating mostly the inside and eating around the burnt bun. I really wish I could give this place five stars but I don't understand how masterminds like the chefs at this location can't get toasting bread right. Ps. An outstanding and creative breath of fresh air. What they are doing here is really special and unique. You are going to find things here you won't find anywhere else on the coast, and they do it without any of the pretense and attitude you will find in AG and SLO. It is really staggering how far ahead of everyone Pico is. The menu changes a lot too. But if they have the guanciale or lamb tartare, try it. The Viet Brussels sprouts will knock your socks off! All the items we tried on the menu were delicious, but it's the Brussels off the appetizer list that my husband and I keep talking about. WOW! My husband took us to this restaurant for our first valentine's together and could not have had a better experience. Atmosphere was amazing, they have a beautiful and spacious back garden patio with tons of heaters and a beautiful view of the mountains. The hostess and servers were so sweet and helpful. We did their tasting menu which may have been one of the best meals I've had in my life and the cocktail/wine pairing. we both got an amuse of picked carrots with this amazing aperol spritz with a twist, next was sashimi, then a salad with an amazing goat cheese then I got lobster risotto (yum!) and my husband got the filet which both came with roasted garden veggies, finished with baklava and dessert wine. I can't remember all the other wine pairings, but they were fantastic. They by mistake brought out the wrong wine with one of the dishes after which they apologized profusely and took some of our bill. honestly such great service! I would highly recommend for anyone for just some cocktails on the patio or a full multi-course meal if you are in town. read more

The last time I ordered, it took 45 minutes, and all I was offered was a glass of wine for the wait... I don't drink. Food was cold by the time I walked it around the block, so I imagine that my $150 meal had sat on a counter somewhere for a while, beforehand. I tried to go again last week, but was left standing by the host stand until I finally just walked out. Tonight, I was told there is no longer take out service... in a continuing pandemic. This repeat customer local won't be back, and is highly disappointed. read more
