So lately I have been craving a good meat pie. After doing some searching on the interwebs I discovered this place. Let me tell you...this place is indeed a hidden gem. It looks very unassuming but it holds some delicious items. I tried their steak pie and sausage roll. Both had an incredibly flaky crust. The steak was tender and swimming in a delicious gravy. The sausage roll was basically a flaky croissant with a yummy sausage stuffing. Both were so good I managed to chomp down on them within minutes. But I took my time eating the flaky crust. The staff were very friendly and they explained everything they made was in-house. It really tasted like it was. Very fresh. Like eating homemade pie. The whole place smelled like a bakery. I decided to even take home one of their custard pies for dessert. A bit small but very yummy. Like eating rice pudding pie. My only complaint is its selection. Though varied and with different specialties made each week I would like to see some more options...like a pizza pie...or a gyro pie for example. Something a bit more extreme or experimental. While visiting my brother I stumbled onto this place. The decor is very cute and simplistic. The owner is a multi tasker, he handles and runs everything him self. He has some ready to go pies available and if you want something really freah he ask to call in at least thirty minutes. I happened to get the spicy chicken pot pie and beef pasty. The spicy chicken is full of curry spice type flavors which were pretty good. The beef pasty was like a ground beef and potatoes in a handle held pie. The crust of both were outstanding and so delishous. The only thing is that even though they were delightful, if I come in again i wouldn't be bothered if they weren't on the menu. It's been awhile since I ordered but I do not forget hot delicious pot pies and great service with a smile. I ordered the spicy lamb pot pie and the veggie with feta pot pie for my sister. The spicy was made just right: not too spicy but as a flavor. My sister reported that the veggie pot pie was delicious and she'll be ordering for colleagues whom work nearby. My bf and I always stop in whenever we can come out towards this area. We always end up grabbing 6-8 pies to take home. They have so many different flavors to choose from so it's hard to ever just decide on a few.... they also have special flavors and seasonal pies!!! We are never disappointed. The flavors are always strong, wonderful, and mouthwatering. I always enjoy all the spicy varieties that they have! Other things we have grabbed have been some of there dessert pies! I don't know why it took us so long to get out here, but this is a hidden gem in Aurora. The meat pies we had were perfection. I had the chicken and mushroom. Loved the idea of an all pie restaurant. I tried a chicken and mushroom pie and steak one as well. The pie crust is so flaky and buttery! Loved it! Also, had a mini cherry pie for dessert. Easily, the best dessert I have had in a long time. I don't even like cherries that much! Everything was really reasonably priced. One downside would be that not all the pies are ready and up for order. If you want to eat on the spot you just have to choose from a more limited selection. Yes, we're still loving Pie Boss pies. I've got 10 more frozen pies in my freezer (6 spinach and feta, 3 beef pasty, 1 sausage), waiting to be liberated from their chilly slumber, and tossed down the family gullet. (That didn't come out quite right, but whatever.) So yeah, instead of a side of beef in my freezer, I've got South African hand pies. Because that's how we roll in Des Plaines - "City of Destiny." So go eat your's fresh out of the display case. There's not a lot of ambiance in the dining area, so your car will also do nicely. Unless you really love large maps of the world and enjoy talking to people from other countries (which I do). My favorite way to eat the pies is tucked into a napkin by hand. They are not like those weak mostly liquidy pot pies you're used to. So don't be afraid of them pouring out all over your lap. These are hearty dense pies built by a couple brothers, and suitable for a man's appetite (after doing hearty man-work, like logging or telephone pole tossing or polishing your rims). You'll want to eat two, maybe three (if your rims were particularly dirty). Your dainty lady-friend will claim she only wants to try 1/2 of one with a house salad. Try not to smirk and roll your eyes, because everyone knows they don't sell salads! Because, what's the point of a salad, when you can bake veggies into a savory pie? Buy her 2-3 varieties, so you get the extras. That's called tactical dining. You're welcome. If you're a lady who can relate to said tactical dining, hoorah! And please adjust above genders according to your personal predilections. If you're a man and a huge fan of crisp vegetables, not cooked into pie form...just stop OK? Since my browser froze and I lost my first review, I'm going to keep this one short and to the point: I had the Spinach & Feta pie, and I really liked it. I only had a few bites of the Cheeseburger, but I didn't really like that one. Pies are about $5 each, so it's totally affordable for lunch or dinner. The pies are "personal" size, but after one I was still a little bit hungry. If you phone in your order, pies will be ready in 30 minutes. They also stay very hot for a 20-30 minute car ride. It's not real often I give places 5 stars, but this place deserves it. For what it's intended to be, all I have to say is " Nailed it!" From the gates, I was a little put off by the menu. So, I admit it. While the selection is small, it isn't insufficient. They have styles for everyone's taste, from kids to spice loving adults and everything in between. We ran the while gamut with our order. When I walked in, the smell grabbed me by the nostrils and led me around the counter area like the visible fog type scent hand we used to see on Tom & Jerry. You know the one. I was greeted by a young women who informed me that my pies were still cooking and should be ready in two minutes. Meanwhile I see who I assume to be the owner in the back, busily rolling out a fresh batch of aromatic, flaky deliciousness. I get my pies, a spinach feta for the wife, ham and cheese for the kiddies, cheeseburger just for fun, chicken perri Perri and sausage roll for myself. We carry them out as there are only two tables for eating in. I'm confident they have future expansion on the horizon. I tasted all of the pies, each as delicious as the last. But the crowning jewel for me was undoubtedly the peri peri. According to the menu and the owner when I called, this was supposed to be very spicy. I eat ghost peppers on my ghost peppers so I'm no stranger to spice. When I hear " really spicy" I figure it must be tame like a chipotle or some other variety of toddler teething pepper. This, though, really was quite spicy! I'd compare it to the hear level somehow near a fresh jalapeno up toward the seed cluster. It was phenomenal! The taste, the texture...it was all there. The chicken was all white meat, tender and flaky as was the dough, all combined with a nice spicy curry type sauce. The sausage roll was also really good. Unlike any sausage I've had before. This is not some Italian or polish rolled in a refrigerator biscuit. It's dense, savory, and fresh. Please go. Do it for me. If you don't like it, I'll personally eat it for you. Let's face it, Chicago is really not where you think to go when you're craving a pasty. In fact, I lived here nearly 20 years before even understanding what one was. I knew it was some type of English foldover thing, stuffed with meat but that was about the extent of it. Sure I knew what an empanada was, but to this day I'm still not clear on the difference between the two things...if a difference exists. Then I met my mother-in-law and started taking trips to Michigan, where pasties are in plentiful supply. These are not the little sparkly cups that strippers wear over their nipples. These are the real deal. But...being a teenage boy, I was a bit more familiar with the former than the latter. And seeing as how they seem to be all over the place in Michigan. Well, let's just say Mom was amused at my lack of knowledge on the subject. A lot. Enough that she thought she'd be funny and buy a pair of stripper pasties and wrap them up for a gag Christmas gift for me that year. So funny, right? Yeah, not so much. Especially when you get a pair of tassels from your future mother-in-law. FAIL. EPIC FAIL. But what doesn't fail in any way shape or form is the food at Pie Boss. This was a bit of a hike for us, but turned out being worth every mile put on the old SUV. There's no easy way to get to Aurora from Willow Springs. Trust me, I've tried all of them. You just have to suck it up and deal with the fact that you're going to be in the car a lot longer than you want to be. So to reward ourselves for the long long car ride, we stuffed ourselves with flaky deliciousness upon arriving at Pie Boss. Cheeseburger Pie, Chicken & Mushroom, a sausage roll and the aforementioned pasty were all on the menu. And like another reviewer stated, one item is definitely enough to satisfy a person. We were being gluttonous pigs, but the leftovers filled us up for the rest of the day, so that was good. Everything was surrounded by the most buttery delicious flaky crust you've ever had. Perfectly golden brown, this is that fall food you know you've been craving. And with colder days in our future, this will really fill you up. Grab some frozen ones to take home while you're there. The fillings were all seasoned very well, and everything tasted very fresh and perfectly cooked. No frozen carrots & peas like you find in a lot of pot pies. The sauces were rich and satisfying as well. The gentleman behind the counter mentioned that everything is prepared by hand; even the cheeseburger is grilled before being put into the pie. I like the spicy vegetable the best. The crust is so good you eat every piece. The meat is fat free and no grizzle like is some meat pies. Everything is top shelf fresh ingredients. The pies are small, but good for a filling snack. Two pie can fill me up and one pie is great for lunch. the problem is you always want more. What a nice problem. The best part of pie boss is the friendly service and kind attention to the customers. I was treated wonderfully on my first visit and they were sincerely glad I was in their shop. I looove savory pies so I was extremely excited to learn of this place. Oh, it was so fantastic. We called 30 minutes beforehand and the pies were ready maybe 3 minutes after we arrived. I tried both their veggie pies, the spinach feta and the spicy curry veg. I loved both, but the curry in particular was absolutely everything I could ever hope for. Amazingly flavorful curry that perfectly matched the obscenely buttery, flaky crust. It was addicting. I don't know if I could stop myself if a row of these pies was placed before me. My partner enjoyed his beef pasty and especially loved the sausage roll. We both enjoyed the little dessert pastries. Very friendly service and easy to talk to on the phone. I always appreciate it when small shops like this post a nice clear menu on their website. I just wish it wasn't so far away in this barren-looking strip mall next to a corn field. I feel like they would do better in downtown Naperville with traffic from the school and shoppers looking for something non-chain. Either way, I really, really, really hope they succeed. My only complaint is that the pies weren't as large as I was hoping. Then again, I basically inhaled mine for lunch so if I slowed down and ate it like a normal person, I would have been okay. I can be somewhat of a snob with pie crusts but Pie Boss' is tasty with good texture, despite just sitting under a heat lamp for a while, which makes me wonder how much more delicious it would have been if I gotten it baked fresh. Really good. You have to try this place. These aren't dessert pies, these are more of what you would consider "chicken pot pies". They are small, and can be eaten individually, or you can buy a bunch of different flavors and share them. Yes, they do have a chicken pie, but they also have varieties of beef, lamb, pork, and more. The guy who owns the place is from Africa and also has a small African grocery store next to it. Not sure if the recipes are from Africa, but they are all very good. read more

Go. Now. Don't waste your time. This place is AMAZING. I got it for lunch, brought it back to work to eat, and the entire office stopped to see what I was eating because it smelled SO good! I had the cheeseburger pie and a sausage roll, and am extremely full/happy! The pie crust is flaky and delicious, and the meats are flavored wonderfully. I will be returning. I give Pie Boss five stars since it is the only one of its kind in the area/anywhere else I have ever heard of. I mean, who thinks to themselves "Hey, let's go open a place that only serves Pot Pie!" Then when you ask, do you have Cherry Pie??? They say No, we have Lamb?!?!?! So, anyway, they serve "POT" Pie (I guess you couldn't add the "pot" to the name, people might confuse us with Colorado). More so, they serve really good Pot pie! I got an off menu pie with lamb and it had great intense flavor! They have some other things too, but I'm not sure why you would get something other than Pie. Really yummy meat pies. I don't have much opportunity to eat savory pies, but I do like them. I am glad this place opened up, and I was very impressed by the quality of the food. The restaurant is very no-frills and more suited for a quick grab & go, but you won't be disappointed. I also took a box of meat pies home so we could sample some of the other flavors. My family liked them all: the pepper steak, cheeseburger, veggie, and a few others. The tarts were good, too. Aurora is quite a hike, but if I am out this way again, I'll be stocking up. Because it's a little off the beaten path, I am worried it won't stay in business unless people seek it out and help these owners build a loyal customer base. The Chicago area really needs this dining option, and it would be great if Pie Boss became successful enough to open a few other locations closer to Chicago proper. I chatted a little with the young man who owns this place with his family. He explained to me the regional differences between meat pies and how these particular recipes were developed. The family is from South Africa, where meat pies are a very popular comfort food, but there's also a bit of Indian influence, reflecting the owners' ethnic heritage.
