Pie Ranch is a beautiful working non profit farm along the coast between Pescadero and Santa Cruz. On the weekends they open the barn and sell delicious pastries made by Santa Cruz pastry chefs using the flour that is grown and milled on site. If you get a chance you MUST go to one of their barn dances. Super fun! With callers and everything - a real hoe down! I always pick up farm fresh eggs and in season produce along with my coffee and pie when I'm cruising the beautiful Cabrillo Highway! I recently just found out they also rent out the barn for weddings... and they have a great outdoor kitchen. read more

This place, though hard to access (only a convenient stop when you're on road-trips riding along the coast), has some of the best pies in the area. The place has great service, a wonderful work ethic and I love that they make their pies with organic ingredients. The pies seem pricey, but the money isn't kept for pure profit; the pie ranch places a large emphasis on community service and youth education. Love this place when visiting the pescadero area! Their pies and baked goods are always such a little treat when exploring the coast. My boyfriend absolutely loves the lemon buttermilk pies. Stopped by on a whim based on the signs along Hwy 1. (Who can resist PIE?!?) We were not sorry! We bought a pear galette (like a small pie or tart) and a whole walnut pie. The galette was tasty & not too sweet (we like them this way) & reminded us of the ones from Companion Bakeshop in Santa Cruz (I'm guessing that's where it was baked). The pear slices were crisp but didn't strike me as underripe. The crust was apparently whole wheat. The pie was incredible (well, still is--it takes two people a while to finish off a pie). The stamp on the box indicates that it was indeed baked by Companion. A bit misleading for the Pie Ranch to be selling someone else's pies, IMHO. And it was *not* cheap! Still, a tasty investment (and it sounds like the mission of the Pie Ranch is an admirable one). There's a nice little area with picnic tables near the sales area where we indulged. read more

Stopped by today because I was wanting to try an olallieberry pie after hearing about it from a friend. It was absolutely delicious. Tart, sweet (not too sweet) with a great crumble on top. We just happened to stop here as we were driving up the coast and I wish we would have kept on driving. The lady didn't greet my husband and I as we walked in, no big deal- but we were the only people in there and the place just opened. I was expecting there to be a great selection of pies but there were only three and nothing really looked appetizing. Instead of just walking out I decided to give it a try so I wouldn't feel bad for not buying something. I landed up getting a small chocolate pie and four shortbread mint chocolate chip cookies the lady rang me up and didn't say anything other than giving me my total ($14) and if I wanted to donate to some youth organization. I punched in my information gave a small donation and expected her to say thank you- you know basic manners type stuff. But as I look up she literally was across the store with her head shoved in a display case and made no eye contact whatsoever. I thought well at least the pie and cookies will be a nice treat for the hubby and kids but I was so wrong. The pie crust was so hard and the flavor of the chocolate was just off, we landed up throwing everything away. Its bad when teenagers won't even touch the food. My wife and I live and work in Carmel, but every once in a while we love going to Half Moon Bay when the grind of work becomes too much. On every trip up, we've passed this place and considered whether visiting would be worth the effort. We took the plunge today and were pleasantly surprised. They have the absolute best tasting strawberry tarts I've ever had the pleasure to experience. The counter staff were polite and very helpful. Pie Ranch is directly if not diagnoally across the street from Ano Nuevo State Park. We decided to stop by to pick up coffee but to my dismay, it was luke warm and they ran out of lids. My dad was raving about this place for months and I never had a chance to go until this past Saturday. We called in advance to make sure there would be pie left by the time we arrived (around 11:45 am). When we got there they had three pie options but I was so excited we ordered all three - a mini apple, mini berry, and whole walnut, as well as some eggs and fresh strawberries. The minis were good and the walnut pie was insanely delicious, it was a good call to order a whole one! It's Monday and I'm enjoying a slice for breakfast, it brings me so much joy! Heading to Ana Nuevo to see Elephant Seals we were compelled to pull over and see what this Pie Ranch was all about. My 9 year old son and I loved the place. It's in a barn with fantasy lights and magical rustic ambiance. It's simple with outdoor seating if you want to grab some pie to munch. Of course, they have much more than pie as its like a roadside fresh, produce stand with a nice assortment of additional baked goods. But given it was the "pie" that got us to pull over, that's what we went for. They had a nice selection of standard and individual sized pies. We had Peach and Strawberry Rhubarb. I also grabbed a cop of their coffee. The pie was great, flaky and fresh. The individual sized pies were plenty big for us both. The coffee was quite good. They happened to be out of cream and sugar but as I go black with desserts it wasn't a tragedy for me. My car broke down here the other evening and out of any place along Hwy 1 it could have happened, we were absolutely the luckiest people to be able to stop here. The lady at the counter lent us her land line to call AAA, we got to pat a friendly dog and consume tasty tea and brownies while waiting on the porch for the tow truck and she even waited up for us past closing time without an ounce of annoyance (which would have been pretty justified) to make sure we got home safe. My family and I love going down Highway 1, supporting the family organic, sustainable farms and stands on the way. Let me tell you a little story today about the sad end of Pie Ranch (if karma has anything to do with it- that is). Once there was a fairy who loved all things organic and handmade. She heard of a little store where, it was said, had the most delicious of treats. All sustainable and organic, of course. On her first visit the fairy wanted to buy cookies but they were all out. The lady in the store was very mean to her family but she thought that maybe they were just upset because they looked like they had sold out of everything- it had to be hard, the fairy reasoned, to be open to sell things and have nothing to sell....she would come back. The next month the fairy stopped by again. Her family was frustrated because there was no produce or stock (with the exception of questionable "shirts"- but why would you buy a shirt proclaiming you purchased from this so called pie ranch when you couldn't buy anything but the shirts saying you their "emperors new vegetables/fruits/baked goods" that may not even exist?) The angry lady (why is she always angry?) said that a couple of school busses had stopped and absconded with all the baked goods. When the fairy voiced her concerned for the second fruitless trip she was told that if she would just call, then the store would put aside whatever she requested. When she pointed out it was coming on the holidays, she was told her request would be approved since she traveled a couple of hours to get the this supposed "pie ranch". Today the fairy called ahead and requested for 6 shortbread to be put to the side. The message assured me that it would be addressed before business began for the day. She traveled in good faith to this pie ranch and when she got there, there were 4 shortbreads. It was so slow and empty that she felt confident that the shop lady had her cookies behind the till, she also thought that she would also take one of the buttermilk pies for the next day. When she asked the lady that she called about she received a curt "I didn't get the message" and she was asked if I wanted the 4 cookies. She told her no that she had 6 people in the car and then pointed out that last month she told me if there was a call she would put it aside. The lady told the fairy she was too busy. The fairy got angry. The lady didn't care so the fairy turned her into a troll and that was why no one knows about the "Pie Ranch" anymore. Because the pie was a lie, the cookies were a lie and lies should melt into 2017 and die. read more

Just hearing the word pie puts a smile on my face. And the words Pie Ranch? Well I knew we had to stop... The place itself looks like a big old barn that had been refurbished as a cafe/store. There are all kinds of interesting crafts, kitchen and cooking gadgets and food goods to buy. They even have a lovely little area for kids to play with books where parents can sit on comfy chairs and enjoy their pie and coffee. Got the pie craving during COV-19 Shelter in Place order and made the 1+ hour drive from Burlingame to Pescadero. There simply is no better place to get a fresh pie. After agonizing which flavor to get since every one is a winner (Pumpkin. Orange Blossom, Chocolate Creme, Walnut, Berry w/Lemon were on the menu), went with Pumpkin. It was indescribably farm fresh delicious perfection. Also had picked up Walnut for some businesses who helped during COV-19. I received immediate phone calls from them that evening, praising the pies. The location and retail barn are worth the trip alone. In addition to the pies, they sell fresh greens and farm fresh jarred condiments (pickles, carrots, Olalaberrie to name just a few). But here's what brought me over the hill the following day. That little market barn has Shelter in Place food safety guidelines in it's own league. Our grocery stores over hill are doing a great job but they could consult and learn from what Pie Ranch has got set up. They've got a Fort Knox COV-19 safety process intact. You have to wash hands in portable sink with soap/water for 20 seconds before entering the store, which is completely and clearly taped with markers and signage. Then upon entry, not allowed to pick up anything unless you intend to buy. Just as safety efficient at the register for payment process. But wait it gets better. I returned the next week to pick up yet another pie. They have now set up a counter at the top of entry stairs, blocking entry into the store AND using the counter to create minimum 6' distance from register. There is signage outside posting stocked merchandise that they will retrieve for you, including the pies. After you pay, there is no physical contact, you walk around the backside of the barn to pick up waiting merchandise. The system is flawless, checking all boxes of potential safety concerns. Sadly I can no longer trek to Pie Ranch due to 5 mile radius allowance but for those of you that can stretch the distance you won't be sorry. The pies are often SOLD OUT so call early to put on hold. Also, if they are sold out ask about frozen pies. I have bought them, thawed and they are just as delicious as fresh. read more

We got the lemon buttermilk pie and the summer berry pie. The lemon buttermilk pie was excellent! I thought it would be very sour what with lemon and buttermilk both being tart ingredients, but both the flavors come through very well and combined with the buttery flaky crust, the pie simply melts in your mouth. We had the summer berry pie after the lemon buttermilk and found it to be sour but we had the leftovers the next day and it was just the way you would expect a berry pie to taste. The only reason to not give the place 5 stars is the pies are very pricey. $8 for a small pie and $25 for a large one! But oh well, all the ingredients are local. read more

Lived in San Mateo County most of my adult life but never stopped here. Always saw it, but I was always in a rush to get home or to somewhere in or past Santa Cruz and just never wanted to have pie sitting in my car for that long. Now that I no longer live in the Bay area, I thought I should finally stopped by, since it would probly be at least 2 or 3 years till I was there again. I expected something called Pie Ranch to be filled top to bottom with various types of pies. I expected a minimum of a dozen different ones, and that was only if they were out of most of them. They had 3 different flavors. 3! I was just shocked. There's no words to describe walking in the something called Pie Ranch and struggling to find even one pie and then finding 3 whole flavors in a tiny glass display case to choose from. Just WTF!? The entire store was basically devoted to jams and some other thing I've never heard of and body type products and a tiny table with some fresh produce. I guess there's not much fresh produce this time of year ... but if you're going to have something called Pie Ranch, people better walk in and all they hoards of differentpue options! It was weird. We got one though, and had no way to keep it cool, but luckly it was cool out. It was in our car for about 5 hours and tasted good. It's a chocolate pie, which is super odd for a pie ranch on a farm to have anything with chocolate in it. Nothing in the ingredient list would indicate that the pies would have been made on site. I figured everything there would be from their farm. Maybe I'm wrong. Just seems odd if that's not the case! The pies are excessively expensive! I have never paid so much for a full pie in my life. Wouldn't stop there again, just because there should be a huge selection and there wasn't and we were there shortly after they opened. So the selection should had been outstanding. They should simply change their name to something like Homemade Goodies and call it a day. So much improvements should be made! Tons and tons of room for improvements so hopefully they attempt to become what they claim to be. read more

This is one of the CUTEST spots I have ever laid my eyes upon. They dont have many choices here. It could be due to the fact that it's winter. They sell oganic goodies here and and the things that they do sell are great. We all loved the amazing brownies we got here. If you've never tried duck eggs your missing out. We've tried Emu and Ostrich eggs but we have never been a fan of them. We don't quite like the taste of emu or ostrich eggs but duck eggs are so good. We boiled them, peeled them, and dipped them in mayo. Super tasty. read more

What many people don't realize is that Pie Ranch gets it's name from the shape of their farm, and for the fact that they grow almost everything one would need to bake a pie, and it's not named specifically for the availability of pie at their stand (though, I've always found a selection of delicious pie when I pass through) They grow and mill flour here, which is pretty incredible on it's own (it's really not easy to grow or find local flour in this climate), but they send this flour, along with fruits and berries, off to a bakery down Highway One called Companion Bakeshop, which is where the pies are made. So you end up with a hand made pie using very local ingredients. Every pie I've taken home has been amazing. The crust is always perfectly buttery and flaky. I especially love the apple pie this time of year. Well worth the money. The best part is that any profit that Pie Ranch makes off of this venture goes toward community programs, like community farming classes and educational programs for children. If you're looking for a place to relax along the One, Pie Ranch offers a laid-back atmosphere, coffee, and delicious pastries, and plenty of whole pies, hand pies, bread, and cookies. But it's what Pie Ranch does for the community that makes it worth supporting. read more

High marks to Pie Ranch for their summer 2016 offerings, which cover a wide range of prepared and farm-fresh items, including locally sourced heirloom wheat flour ($3.50/lb.) and Pescadero duck eggs ($8/half dozen), in addition to their famous pies, such as peach and strawberry rhubarb. Coming here while on a Highway 1 road trip (check their hours first!) is a great way to get a sense for what the land can provide in terms of organic vegetables, fruit, and prepared foods, including coffee roasted in Santa Cruz. I'm so disappointed!!!!! The first time I drove down to pie ranch, I tried to call to confirm that they were open and no one answered. We decided to drive down anyway and, even though there were signs on the road advertising fresh pie, the ranch was closed for a private event. Today our group decided to give it another try. We called and they said they were open. So, we trekked all the way down there. Again, our hopes were elevated by the signs advertising fresh pie along the road. When we drove up, we were horrified to find a sign saying that they were sold out of fresh pie. Undaunted, we went in hoping that there would frozen pies for sale. There were not. The cashier must have been having a rough day because she was quite irritated at our disappointment and offered only produce as a consolation (beets are not pie!). If you decide to go, be very specific when you call and don't expect good customer service. And bring cash...apparently sometimes it's cash only. read more

If you enjoy live old timey music and are not to cool to do si do, grab your boots and hat because this is the place to be on the third Saturday of every month. You will surely work up a sweat as you promenade around the crowded barn. Don't worry if you don't know your corner from your neighbor, the caller is great and explains the dances well. The barn fills with folks of all ages infants to grannies and the boy/girl ratio is fairly even. Go early to do a bit of ranch work or at the very least to take a stroll around the ranch. There are goats and chickens to see. There is a potluck before the dancing too. So bring something yummy to share. read more

EVER! driving south on the pch i decided to stop in for a quick look based on a recommend from a foodie friend in berkeley...great decor and smelled wonderful (pies, fresh veggies and ocean air). my daughter spotted the mini chocolate chess pie so i decided to get one for her and we were back on the road. we pulled over at waddell beach to watch the kite surfers and try the pie and BAM!!...it was like nothing i've ever experienced. between the location and the amazing pie i decided to turn around and return to buy the last whole chocolate chess pie for a dinner with friends that night. so glad i did...it was a huge success. we'll be back again next trip north! can't wait! read more

I feel totally misled by the name and the signs that say "Slow down for pie." We stopped here after a visit to Ano Nuevo around 4:35 p.m. (They close at 5.) I was expecting a cute little pie shop that makes its own pies. Wrong. It is a cute little restored barn that sells some produce and eggs (eggs sold out in the morning) and whole pies (none by the slice) baked by The Buttery in Santa Cruz.
