Really wanted to love my pie at the Pie Shop on H street especially because my friend said they love their savory pies. After spending $10 on a sweet slice of apple pie I unfortunately will not be back. Maybe getting a sweet slice was my downfall. The roasted apple cinnamon chess sounded really good. Unfortunately when I bit into the pie it tasted kind of old or like it just came out of the freezer. And the crust which is typically my favorite part of a pie had a weird taste to it. I had maybe 2 bites and then couldn't do it anymore so I threw the rest out. Aside from the pie itself, the staff were really nice. They even offered to warm up the pie for me which I loved. The size of the pie was pretty big .. not necessarily $10 worth tho. I would recommend just getting a whole pie from the grocery store instead for the cost. The inside was empty and there was plenty of seating. And also to note it did look like they've been a neighborhood favorite over the years. They have multiple 'Best of DC' stickers on the door. I wanted to like Pie Shop so badly. I've heard such amazing things about this place! Maybe it was just who was playing the night I visited, but the energy was off and the pie was subpar. I had the salted caramel french toast pie slice and my friend had the samoa pie slice. Neither of us were impressed. I love Pie Shop's values, and always want to support local! The guy working the front counter was super sweet, but it seems almost impossible to have a successful time when it's only him and 20 people waiting in line. Maybe having someone just for the cash register and someone else getting the pie could work? I'm not sure. I heard this was a H St staple, so I had to check it out. Really like the small, personal chill vibes. The cashier/server was cool and very helpful. Great variety on the menu with a mix of savory and sweet pies. We went with the Smog and Spinach and Goat cheese Quiche with an apple pie for dessert. Presentation-wise, everything was cooked well. I wasn't a huge fan of the Smog crust, but I will never judge a place solely on one thing. Looking forward to trying something different next time, but I would recommend it. read more

What a little gem! When we first entered, we were a little apprehensive because it was a complete ghost town and it did not have a cozy bakery feel like we were imagining. We ordered a selection of pies to share: checkerboard, key lime, berry, and Berger cookie. Key lime was hands down my favorite, but the Berger was interesting since it's a local cookie (but on top of more of a custard filling). The slices of pie were bigger than we expected (we wouldn't have ordered as many but the employee tried to show us the size with her hands and the slice didn't seem very large based on her measurement), but we indulged! Cool little pie shop. Simara (sp?, counter person) was helpful and pretty cool. Savory pies were good, pulled pork was the preferred choice. It was like eating bbq pork rib smokey goodness. The spinach gruyere quiche was fluffy and light. IMO, the Gruyère cheese didn't come through very strongly. We also had the SMOG (steak, mushrooms, onions and gruyere). The smog was good, but compared to pulled pork it was subdued. Again, the Gruyere didn't come through as much as I'd like. We ordered 2 sweet pie slices, key lime and coconut sweet potato pie. KL was nicely sweet (maybe a little too sweet IMO) and tart. The graham crust was nicely done and not soggy as many KL pies I've had over the years. The texture of the KL filling was firm and not overly dense. I'd order it again and eat it with a hot strong black coffee I was struggling to choose between the Chocolate Pecan and Coconut Sweet Potato pie, looking for something less sweet than the KL for our second slice. Simara suggested CSP pie beside it was less sweet and not always something they make.. It wasn't too sweet and the coconut came through very subtly. Both in the taste and texture. I ordered an iced coffee to go along with the pies, and let's face it, it was a pretty warm afternoon and my pie search was a little out of our way. So I was feeling warm. I drink my coffee black, though they offered cream and agave syrup. The iced coffee was strong and quite good. Often iced coffees are overly diluted. So that was big plus and I received a free refill. So the Pie Shop is off the beaten track for most tourists. The neighborhood is very local. Don't expect a clean scrubbed National Mall or financial district feel to it. The neighborhood is urban and somewhat gritty. The PS also features live music, when we arrived (Sunday late afternoon) it was quiet, but the music started up as we were leaving. Look at the list of performances, they may or may not be to your taste. At the PS, you order at the counter, and in our case S brought our slices to our table (you seat yourself). The inside of the shop has a worn local feel, expect a very casual space with worn dark wood and inexpensive chairs and furnishings. It's small and can't seat many people. As of this writing the savory pie slices run around $12, while the sweet pie slices are around $9. Would I go back again? Yes, I liked the pies and wanted to try more. I'd recommend going earlier in the day to get the best selection of pies. We also came on graduation weekend, meaning there were a lot of pies ordered and picked up, so they sold out of many of their pies. The PS does a brisk takeout/togo business too. read more

The filling was also on the tart/not too sweet side, which I appreciate. The fresh juicy apples really shine. The crust was good, but nothing to write home about. I would have preferred a crumble top (versus a traditional pie crust) but Pie Shop's version works. Note - the pie crust is pretty bland and is likely the same thing they use for their savory pies. The back edge was dense and tasted bland. Overall, a solid pie with perfect filling, but room for improvement on the crust side. When I came in I was torn a out which pie to get because they have so many options. What looked the most appealing were the Peanut Butter Nutter and Key Lime pies. The nice worker behind the counter told me that their pies are made fresh every night before the store opens. It's actually a 24 hour operation here. The rich beefy sauce melded just right with the Gruyere's creaminess. My one huge complaint (and keeping this from being a 4+ star place) is the price and serving size. $10 for a slice seems a bit steep. For that (or maybe even a slight price increase to, maybe, $12), I expected a whole personal-sized pie. It's obviously more economical for them to make larger ones and serve them out by the slice, and perhaps it seems more homey that way. But man, I really want my own personal pie, served in its own dish, oozing its own broth and juices when I pierce it. read more

Sweet spot to watch a local rock show. We grabbed two slices of pie, the blueberry pancake mix and apple crumb pie. The slices are large for $8 and we definitely had leftovers. I've been coming to Pie Shop, which used to be Dangerously Delicious' DC location, forever. I truly can't figure out if this is a different shop or just a re-brand or why the name changed, so if anyone has an answer to that mystery please let me know. Their twitter says they've been around for a decade, but it's the same exact location as the previous Dangerously Delicious and I had Dangerously Delicious via a branded truck like two months ago...are they different? The same? Why can't I solve that mystery? The pies are all the same, with the exception of the Baltimore Bomb, which they just call a Berger Cookie, which...is the same delicious pie. All of their pies are delicious. In any case, a rose by any name, amirite? The Pie Shop is amazing. I recently ordered pick-up for a full pie and two slices. The savory slices come in a small tin that is inside of a larger/standard pie tin that contains your salad. So your salad stays separate and crisp and you can pop the pie in the oven for easy reheating! The full pie comes in a tin and a box so it's easy to transport, and they open the box in front of you before you leave so you can check that it's incredible looking. This step is critical because the pie vendor I used for my wedding in Denver didn't do this and I ended up with a bunch of pies that never set and my wedding had no dessert. Like...it's been years and I'm still salty that they did this for an event, and Pie Shop does it for a casual just because pie. That's how you do it! My personal faves are the strawberry rhubarb (tart and amazing), the Berger Cookie (so sweet and so good) and the BBQ pie. The pies are anything BUT basic. We got a key lime pie that was truly the best I have ever tasted. Smooth and creamy while tangy and not too sweet. I could have eaten half of it by myself.
