Inside, it's dim lit with red light bulbs that make it more intimate. There are about 9 cocktails, canned beers, and about 7 red and wine selections. Caution, come here during an off night, as you'll receive better service and you'll easily find a table. There aren't many seats available, but some in a separate cold room. Pie Society is a speakeasy hidden in the back of Pitfire Artisan Pizza. There are two bartenders making amazing craft cocktails and they are indeed time consuming cocktails. My group of friends and I were celebrating my birthday at Pitfire and the plan was to continue into Pie Society for drinks. Unfortunately, it was prime time on Saturday night and there was a bit of a wait. The bouncer would let 4 in at a time explaining to us that the drinks do take time and it wouldn't be fair to overwhelm the bartenders with our orders. Once inside, there's a cool lounge area with comfortable chairs, a bar, and music. The bartenders are busy working their butts off making each drink. Yes, they make them individually which adds to the wait time. I recommend coming here early to enjoy and savor the drinks rather than finish out your night here. I think most people left after one drink because they couldn't wait any longer. We actually got the corner booth as it got later. They do serve some tapas style light bites too so I will take advantage of that in the future. Cool concept, shaky execution. Alas, the speakeasy behind Pitfire Pizza is open. However when I think of the term "speakeasy," I think of those prohibition area bars that illegally sold alcohol. Alcohol is now legal and considering the quality of drinks served here, it really shouldn't be kept a secret. But the folks at Pitfire do their best to mask its existence with a private entrance located down a hallway past the restrooms. You're welcome. In the dark woodsy interior, you'll find bartenders Steve Garcia and Mike Galicia - two notables from the OC scene. I love that I can come here and get a great drink. That's probably the most appealing feature about Pie Society. Experience meets craft and you've got yourself a stiff drink in a stellar somewhat hidden location. If you want to keep it a secret, be my guest but why not shout it from the rooftops especially if you're buzzed after the first drink like I was. What can I say? I'm a lightweight. I'm not complaining though. In this area, the bar is where you want to be. I glanced at the menu and ordered the Pool Side ($10) as my first drink. It's a nice mix of Ford's Gin, watermelon, lemon juice, Plymouth Sloe Gin, and a cucumber slice (that looks like a surf board). One sip and my weekend had begun. This smooth drink is refreshing and the alcohol will hit you slowly. I did end up sampling the rest of the menu but ended my night with another favorite that's not on the menu - the bedtime story by Steve Garcia. Pie Society gives you the option to pick a drink from a book or they'll make one based on taste and preference. Steve just looked at me and said he knew what I'd like. I trusted him and he came up with a root beer, vanilla, chocolate drink with a vodka base. I was floored. It was amazing. See? This is why you shouldn't keep it a secret. It's not all about the alcohol though. They do have a food menu if you're hungry. You can pick between pickles, a sweet and sour pork belly (mmm), crispy shrimp, a cheeseburger hot pocket, and tater tots with a chorizo fondue. This bar is directly behind Pitfire. Park in the same parking lot and approach the back of the building and you'll see it! I love the vibes of this place, speakeasy-esque and very intimate. As for food (which you can order until 10 pm), they have the same menu as Pitfire, so if you like the food there, you'll like it here. Drinks are really good, just actually read the ingredients in them because some are kind of odd (i.e. the mescal cocktail). Happy hour is 4-6 (I think) and prices are very reasonable. Trivia is on Tuesdays (very fun but half the groups cheat which gets annoying). It gets crowded around 10 pm. read more

I am torn. I absolutely LOVED the cocktails here but the food didn't impress me. We tried almost all the drinks they had and my favorites include North Beach, Pool Side, New York Sour. The other ones which were also good were Old Man & The Sea, El Primo (unique smoky mezcal) and Medicine Rattle which was weird in a good way. I enjoyed the Pastrami Peanuts with smoked sea salt. In fact, these were hugely addictive. Tater Tots served with "chorizo fondue" sauces was delicious! Sweet & Sour Crispy Pork Belly with pineapple and opal basil was hit and miss. We had two different bowls, one was spongy and soggy in texture, the other was nice and crispy. Cheeseburger Hot Pockets were okay, nothing to shout about and the Superba fried chicken was underseasoned both times. Kimchi deviled eggs look interesting, but I would suggest against these -- devoid of kimchi flavor and the egg whites rubbery. Loved the Soprano pizza as well as the Deli pizza. Solid 4.5! My friend and I checked this place out on a Saturday around 7pm and it was pretty busy! The space is small, which is not surprising, but we found a standing table right when we got there. A couple left so we ended up moving, but onto the food and drinks! Food-- we got the broccolini, cheese knots, and a pizza Broccolini: was good, but not the best I've had. Had some lemon, parm cheese, and breadcrumbs! I think if it was slightly more cooked, it may have been better.... unsure tho (3.75/5) Cheese knots: super yummy! Nice and chewy w/ that crispy bottom. Really filling haha came with marinara sauce as well. (5/5) Pizza: we got the Honey Bear pizza-- really gooood. We got it without the bee pollen as I am slightly allergic, but the honey w the spicy kick of the chili's and the creamy ricotta was just so good. I would've loved a side of honey to dip the crust, next time! I would say that their dough is really really good (5/5).. Drinks-- we got the Rum Punch and the Paloma. Horrendous bar service last night. Arrived at 6:20. There were 3 other people at the bar just prior to us. The bartender served each and just as she was finishing and I was prepared to order our drinks a new couple enters and she turns to them, welcomes them and offers them a drink. I figured it was an oversight, albeit odd because I was the only person standing there for minutes while she made the previous drinks. I opted to not rudely interject and just gave her the benefit of the doubt. Then she proceeded to do this two more times. I cannot imagine what prejudice she was exercising, but I also can't imagine that she is that tremendously inept. Eventually a second bartender came in and he made my drinks instantly, at 6:40 a full 20 minutes after we entered. I've always had marginal experiences at Pie Society. Lazily made cocktails, apathetic service, so I almost always choose Wild Goose or Country Club or any other nearby option, but occasionally I find myself at Pie Society. Last night was the absolute last time I'll make this mistake. I was never offended by their mediocrity, but last night's experience was an unjustifiable and bizarre way to treat any customer. At the end of the night I did mention the experience to the male bartender who had been dutifully helping us. He was kind and apologetic and unaware of why the other bartender had exercised such prejudice. We didn't make him feel badly about it, but just figured he should be aware of it considering that her prejudicial judgment will adversely affect their business at large. read more

I've been to some pretty amazing speakeasies in Chicago and also had a chance to visit a fantastic one in SF, so I decided to look for ones of similar caliber in the OC. I was originally going to visit Casa, but decided to check out Pie Society instead (I was turned away by the $5 cover at Casa). There are two ways to get to Pie Society - either through the pizza store or from the back, and I chose to enter through the back (didn't want to walk into the restaurant and awkwardly stand there looking for the correct entrance). Someone checked my ID and I was let in. Firstly, this place really doesn't have much of a speakeasy feel to it - it was relatively easy to find, and no secret password/hidden entrance that are characteristic of speakeasies. So no cool tricks there. Also, the place is small and really loud. My voice was pretty much shot by the end of the night even though I was only conversing with one person because I had to yell to be heard. Drinks are a hit or miss. I really enjoyed the Sgt. Pepper's Last Stand ($10) - quite fruity and a great balance between good flavor and a sufficient alcoholic kick. I also tried the jungle bird ($12), which was really disappointing. Rather bland, and tasted almost like watered down, slightly sweetened alcohol. Blegh. I also tried a sip of the thundersmash and old fashioned, but didn't drink enough to really have an opinion. Just a tip - if you are lucky enough to snag a table, you have to order from the waitresses and not at the bar. I bought my first round of drinks at the bar and sat at the table, and got called out (not in a rude way). Service was polite, but they were somewhat understaffed and it was hard to flag down our server amidst the sea of patrons. Overall, not a bad experience, but neither the drinks nor the venue were impressive enough for me to go back. Good 3 stars. read more

Pie Society is hidden behind Pitfire Pizza. You can either enter from the back parking lot or go through Pitfire. The ambiance is dark, cozy, and intimate, although it does get poppin' and crowded. You can order food from the Pitfire menu until 10pm. The menu consists mainly of cocktails, followed by beer and then wine. I went with a Gin and Verjuice which includes lemon, fennel, and cucumber. I don't know if the bartender was new but there were some inconsistencies as he made the same drink for different groups. They have some deals for $10 which include a beer and a shot such as PBR + Bourbon or Tecate + Tequila. Not a bad deal. The best aspect of Pie Society is the atmosphere so it is worth checking out. read more

My boyfriend and I had the pleasure of going here for a quick drink. We ended up staying for dinner. I noticed I sliced my hand upon a broken piece of metal trim on the bar. I was fortunate to notice it immediately. It was on the far end of the right hand side of the bar. I kindly mentioned this to my bartender Maddison. She scoffed and proceeded to mock me. As a Yelp elite I strive to benefit the small businesses and community I was born and raised within. Before she clocked in I felt welcomed and comfortable. I came here one Friday night after seeing a concert at the Pacific amphitheater. A friend of mine was hungry and we tried to make it in time for food but the kitchen closes at 10 I think. That's OK because this cool back of the restaurant was all we needed anyway. I love that there is a ton of parking behind and you walk through kind of a cool little speakeasy patio type alleyway to get inside! The menu is stacked with really interesting cocktails but I was a little disappointed in mine. It wasn't much to write home about or anything I don't know maybe I like the taste of alcohol but it could've used to be balanced a little differently. Too sweet for my liking. One of the best elements of this bar is the lack of windows. I don't know what it's like through the day but that night there was lots of candles everywhere and twinkling lights it's an intimate bar where throwback R&B jams mixed with modern beats enhance your conversations well you play I spy with the decor or any number of the boardgames stacked in the corner. People watching is also excellent here. Again cool bar, incentive menu w/ vintage glassware and an altogether eclectic vintage vibe. Stopped in for the first time during Monday night happy hour and was extremely impressed. I ordered the mac & cheese and flat bread with ricotta (both $5 each during happy hour). I probably mentioned how good the Mac & cheese was 50 times during the course of our meal.. I was that impressed. The flatbread and ricotta was also super yummy.. and a very large portion for the price! My boyfriend ordered the sausage party pizza ($3 off during happy hour) and also only had great things to say. For drinks, we ordered a hazy IPA (came in a can, but was still great), a mojito, and their "summer vibes" featured cocktail. The mojito was perfect. I usually don't get a buzz from one drink, but I definitely was feeling it! The speakeasy ambiance/music playlist was also a huge plus.
