Great barbecue and even better BLT sandwiches heaping with bacon. Service is frIendly and very prompt. Fries are very good too, though portions are huge so best to share. Pay attention to the server's description of the various barbecue sauces; hot means really hot. Only down side are the sandwich buns which are cheap store bought. If they had a high quality multi-grain bun, the place would be perfect. Decor in the main section is a pleasing rough cut barn look --avoid the baby blue annex which has less than no character. Madison is a small town so the place closes relatively early, especially in the winter. read more

Nice little BBQ and Rib joint off the beaten path in Madison, VA. If you are heading to/from Cville from NVA, it is worth a stop. Pig N' Steak isn't too far from White Oak Canyon trail if you are looking for an excuse to order up a full rack of ribs. They serve the real deal here... not some re-heated stuff from Sysco. My family owns a place in the country about ten miles from here, and every time we go to the 'farm', a trip to Pig n' Steak is like a pilgrimage. I couldn't agree more with the previous reviewer. This is the best BBQ in the known Universe! The pulled pork sandwiches are to die for, but if you're really hungry, get the pulled pork platter (which comes with more meat than the sandwich), and purchase a dinner roll (which is the same thing as the sandwich bun) for an additional few cents. The heaping piles of fries here are so good that I'm salivating just thinking about 'em. The baked beans are a little watery to my taste, but since I don't like cole slaw, I always get them anyway. FOLKLORE: Fifteen years ago, there was a little rumor in the town that's now become legend about the owner of Pig n' Steak having killed a man at gunpoint. From there, add a dash of the storyline from "Fried Green Tomatoes," and you've got rumors that he turned the man into BBQ. Of course, the rumors are all false, but I thought you'd enjoy that story. I've been coming here for many years; the Pig 'n Steak has always been a "must stop" for me when traveling between DC and Charlottesville. I confess to not having eaten here in 3 years or so, and I was a little concerned about the reviews that said the place had gone downhill. I disagree. It's still just as good as I remember it. Is it the best barbeque I've ever eaten? No, but it's pretty close. Is it the best barbeque on Route 29? Definitely! The beef is their best dish, a close second is their pulled pork. Both have very intense smoky flavor; if you're a fan of that premade glop that some folks dish out of a jar, don't come here, this is the real deal, smoked for a good long time. Although the sauces are good, I don't use much of them; I prefer the smoky flavor of the meat. The ribs can be hit or miss; this time the 1/4 rack we got was a little on the tough side and fatty, but on other occaisions they have been superb. The sides are all homemade and delicious, the potato salad, cole slaw and beans are especially good. The fries are just average. And I agree with Thomas W. - they need better buns; they fall apart too easily. Service is great. I will still make a stop here whenever I can. read more

GOOD: Legit BBQ. Not the best I've ever had, but quality nonetheless. Needs some hot sauce to make it shine. Hefty portions. Decent enough sides. Reasonable prices for how much food you get. You won't leave here hungry. BAD: The place is dingy, boarderline gross, and hasn't really been updated since 1970. Makes me wonder about the cleanliness of the kitchen. If you can stomach a dank, dark, place that hasn't been really cleaned, then maybe it's for you. VERDICT: If you're desperate for food and don't want commercial crap like Subway, then go for it. Beverages: Three Brothers Beer, yes! BBQ: Cold and unseasoned, poor quality pork, served undressed as it should be, but exposed the poor quality and execution of the BBQ. Amateurish at best. Sauces: vinegar, mild, hot ; all poor and ineffective in covering the pork "flavor" Sides: from a bucket off a truck, embarrassing. This is real pit BBQ. Stopped for a pulled pork sandwich here and it was outstanding, among the best I've ever had. Very smoky flavor, juicy, and the perfect amount of the burnt outer bits mixed in. The mild and and spicy sauces were both just OK, but when the meat is this good it doesn't need more than the tiniest bit of sauce anyway. Visited the Graves Mountain Apple Fest this weekend and saw the Pig and Steak sign near Yoder Dairy Market. We were all starving so we decided to eat there. Very bad idea! 3 of us ordered tge steak sandwich and 2 ordered the 1/2 rack ribs with mac and cheese and bake beans. The other had 1/4 rack ribs and a scoop of pulled pork BBQ, potatoe salad and coleslaw. It was clear that the ribs and beans sat out on a table as the beans had dried dark areas on top of them. The ribs were cool and had BBQ sauce drizzled over the top. Absolute NO smoke flavor to the ribs or pulled pork BBQ and the pulled pork was loaded with gristle and fat! The potato salad, coleslaw and baked beans had no flavor at all. None of us finished eating anything! Those of us that got the ribs left over 99% of it on the plate!! The toilet got the other 1% as it upset some of our stomachs. Disgusting but true. Truly the worse meal I have paid for in a long time. We stopped at the McDonald's down the street and grabbed some fries to get the taste out of our mouths, true story! None of us complained as we figured that their concept of how food should taste was so far from ours that it would have done no good anyway. Bottom line is go somewhere else or you will be pissed off the rest of the night that you blew $50.00 on some mess I wouldnt feed my dog!!! This is down home cookin' at it's finest. The ribs were seriously as good as it gets and the pulled pork (of course I had both, you should too) is phenomenal. The service was friendly and fast. Sauces - None of the sauces where great, the house is ok. A good meal but not great. We stopped by here on the way out of Shenandoah (a very pretty drive back, I might add). Saw the billboard, we were hungry, what could go wrong? Things started off well with the fried pickles, which my wife is addicted to. We weren't that thrilled with the BBQ though. It was definitely smoked well, and very pink - but that's where the fun ended. The outside was tough, like it had dried out after being smoked. And if a dry rub was on there, I couldn't detect it. I'm not one of those people who needs sauce on everything, but I definitely needed it here. Lots of black flies buzzing around. This place needs a few fly traps. Dessert was funnel cake, which was very good - and where else can you get funnel cake in a restaurant? That was a good touch. (We're addicts.) Service was great, no complaints there. I would say 3.5 stars. The overall atmosphere of the restaurant was a little lacking, but the food was pretty good. I thought the mac and cheese and the baked beans were delicious. The pulled pork was pretty good - I thought the sauce and the coleslaw was just okay. Everyone else seemed to enjoy their food. Prices were reasonable! This used to be a good place to eat, but my family has stopped going there after having two experiences resulting in food-poisoning like results when eating burgers there. The kitchen area is not very clean & most of the appetizers are frozen fare. The barbecue, fries and chicken are usually ok, but on the whole not worth the money. read more

They're OK. Nothing to write home about, but if your hungry for smoked BBQ they're the only place to get it close by. Very good food, great family like service. The meat (we had 1/4 rack ribs, pulled pork, and pulled beef sandwiches. There is a distinct, clean, real woodsmoke character to the meats here. It's a small place and they use good wood in their pit. The portions are generous and the sides we had (2 included with our plates) were all uniformly raved about (Cheese Mac, Mac Salad, Potato Salad, Beans, Collard Greens) and were all delicious, fresh and made on premises. No sauce on their meat, three are available at the table. Our server was a happy, friendly young lady, who fussed over us. We all three ordered Apple Dumplings w/Ice Cream and a destination desert it is. Hot dumpling with yummy crust. Glad we found this place late driving back to DC from the Blue Ridge on Hwy 33. We stopped at a roadside fruit stand to buy some apples and turnips (actually the guy's pickup tailgate) and he and his wife said "we know just the place" since we were going through Madison anyway. Oh no wifi and my iPhone was at 2-3 bars, if that. The kitsch factor alone seemed worth stopping here, and the Rib-Eye Steak and Cheese sandwich confirmed it. The 1/3 lb. Pit Cooked Pork Bar-B-Que Platter on the other hand, was disastrously wet and bland. Maybe it was nasty, or maybe Carolina Style BBQ is nasty. The mac and cheese is a bit smoky (good) and swimming in oil (bad). Also, avoid the canned green beans at all costs. Let me quote, "These are why people don't like to eat vegetables!" Pig and Steak is our favorite restaurant in Madison. Definitely worth the stop if you're traveling between Charlottesville and Northern Virginia on US-29. Nothing fancy when it comes to atmosphere or presentation, but consistently good food and friendly service. The PIG: Very good Q at a reasonable price. The STEAK: Excellent! Always done exactly as ordered (I prefer medium rare) and undoubtedly some of the best steak within a 50-mile radius. Be sure to try the Delmonico cut. read more

As someone who spent 3 years traveling the Texas countryside for work and visited more than his fair share of barbecue joints, I'd have to rank this place as one of my top five for its pulled pork. The sides were pretty standard, but the barbecue was stunningly good. If you have the hankering for some quality meat, this is the place. For an authentic piece of Americana, you can dine in this country black-wooden-inside rustic diner, Smoking or Non-Smoking. Plently of good drafts on tap, and all the regular imported favs too. Don't let the shady atmosphere fool you. This place is about the ribs and nothing else. Good BBQ ribs, smoky flavor with a visible smoke ring, because this is real BBQ. Pulled pork is average. Chose this place simply for the name, honestly. The place is eerily quiet--at least on a mid-week afternoon--since music only plays when you choose something from the electronic jukebox, which seems to make all the patrons think they have to whisper. Also it smells faintly of cigarette smoke, but not enough to be a huge bother. I know it is a BBQ place, but both people in my party ended up ordering bacon cheeseburgers. They were around $6 ($1-something extra for fries), which is really not a bad price as burgers go. Food was decent and so was the service. I liked it for the price. read more
