It is worth a visit now and then, for sure. There's certainly nothing like the Pig's Eye in the Hartford area. It's a large, divey bar. Pool tables, fun music, a patio, good beer on tap, peanuts to crack and litter the floors with. This place has some of the good makings of a cool dive bar. But it's not quite my favorite. It is often loud, making it hard to hear the person you're talking to [or hitting on]. It also does kinda straddle the line between divey and gross. Admittedly a vague, qualitative statement, but this is Yelp, right? I wouldn't go if you're over 40. But if you're under 40 and can handle a little filth, the Pig's eye is a fun place to stop by if you're in the area. read more

Pig's Eye is a GREAT dive bar (oxymoron?) located right above Black-eyed Sally's. Friends and I go there pretty much every Friday evening to take advantage of their awesome happy hour. On Friday's from 4-7 all draft beers are $2.00 (they have a large and great selection), there is a live band AND they have free food which consists of pizza, buffalo wings, mozzarella sticks, jalapeno poppers and assorted cheeses; you really can't go wrong! At times it does get a bit crowded but it really isn't anything to complain about. The only downside is as happy hour draws to a close, the crowd really filters out and a few times friends and I found ourselves to be the only people left at the bar -- making 8:30 in the evening feel more like 3:00 in the morning. Pig's Eye is a dive bar in every sense of the illustrious term. The bar is very dimly lit, the bathrooms are gross, very little decorations adorn the wooden walls and they even dish out free peanuts in which people proceed to drop the shells on the floor. If you can look past all of its shortcomings only then will you be able to fully enjoy the fabulous-ness that is their happy hour -- a few hours of pure awesomeness which, in today's world, is dying an unfortunate and all too quick death. read more

Ahh, Pig's Eye... it seems that this is the only place we go to when we're visiting the CT crew. If it wasn't for the no-cover/no line (ever) I'd think I drove 2 hours from Boston to head to Fanueil Hall Part Deux. The drinks are pretty cheap, but subsequently the patrons are cheap-drink-gulping, white-hat wearing guys & biddies in tank's or tube tops regardless of the weather (85 degrees? Tube tops galore! -15 degrees? Tube tops AND Uggs!). There's a cash-only bar out by the deck; I've been known to give bartender Justin $20 and keep the change sitting on the register as my "tab". Clearly that's just so I can be the cool kid with a tab at the cash-bar, but still. There's not much to say about the music; it's just loud. They have some odd videos playing on the monitors (no flat screens here, kids!) if there's not a game on, but then again, as long as your expectations are for 3-stars, you'll get it here. read more

I vehemently avoid College Night because I hate how unbelievably packed this joint gets (which isn't a bad thing). The staff is really chill and their Whiskey Sour is the gospel. They have pool tables and an outdoor section that's lovely when it's warmer outside. My only frustration is there's NOT enough places to sit. I'm always running into childhood friends while there so if you're a Hartford/West Hartford/Bloomfield native, and you're dodging folks...you need not visit. read more

It's not the best bar in Hartford, it might be close... but at least it's not some enormously sprawling beast like the Pourhouse or Up or on the Rocks. The drinks are reasonably priced and the atmosphere is adequate. The indoor space can be a bit intimidating if you're not there with a group of friends and when it's packed IT'S PACKED! The outdoor space is okay in the summer months as they have a small service bar and music out there as well, though it is genuinely for smokers I believe. That being said I can't even begin to count how many times I frequented Pig's Eye as a young adult and it was always a favorite hang out for various friends of mine from high school and on any given night you'd be sure to also see an interesting mix of others as well from the peculiar homeless outside (and in!) as well as 40-something's and anything in between which I think is a fair testament to the mix of people that go to Hartford for any reason at all. I will say however that based on the music inside, outside, and below as well as the usual throngs of people that if there is one aspect I wish they could fix it is the noise. It is so loud in there on any given night you may want to bring a megaphone to talk to your friends! The decor if you've ever seen the place not all lit up and crowd-friendly can be a bit of a downer but let's keep in mind that this is a "pub" and with the amount of volume this place does I don't really think they are in the business of overly-impressing anyone on any level. No matter what, Pig's Eye will always have a special place in my heart as it has been the sight of many a fun gathering over the years I spent growing up in Connecticut and I hope that for other's it has as well! read more

It's your basic staple of a run down bar that is still packed on the weekends. I was somewhat surprised that most of the people were between 21 and 25. A mix of college aged people, and young professionals There's pool, and they played pretty decent music the times I've been there. Compared to other bars I've been to in the area, it's definitely one of the better spots. It shows because people keep coming back. There's a decent atmosphere with the brick walls and the patio area. When it's nice out, it's cool to hang out on the balcony and get a break from the noise. There are a few tables and bar tops to sit at, which changes up the layout. Overall, the pricing is decent, about on par with any other bar downtown. The downside is they don't serve any food, not even pub food. The plus side is a pretty decent crowd with a good atmosphere. read more

A trip downtown is never complete without a visit to Pigs Eye. It's the least pretentious bar around, and they always have great prices on drinks, and an awesome selection of specialty "bombs" and shots. You should note that if you want to mingle with an interesting crowd, this place doesn't get hopping until after 11pm. Between 11 and midnight, the patio fills up outside, and the pool tables are claimed. The DJ is always really easy going and will play pretty much whatever, and even sprinkles in fun trivia games for bar prizes. This bar is pretty decent. I guess the best night to go if you're looking for cheap drinks is on Wednesdays. They have $1 beers. The only catch is that you have to buy one of the glasses for $5. You can then bring the glasses back every Wednesday and it'll be $1 there after. So overall, not too bad. It gets way too packed there, which is the only downside. I guess I can't really complain since they have good drink specials there and that's what draws people in. Anyways, because of it being packed all the time. When I was back in CT for a couple years before venturing to Boston, Pig's Eye fell into pretty heavy rotation in our routine. It was the lesser of many other evils in Hartford's one big strip of bars. To be fair, no cover and relatively cheap drinks is a plus. And, to its credit, I think the DJ did a great job mixing in plenty of alternative, modern, & grunge rock with some of the obligatory bro bar jams. The 2nd floor venue also features a crammed, covered outdoor smokers patio. The bar also also draws out some interesting people from U of Hartford and other area schools. I've also run into some people from highschool and/or my work life that I'm glad to catch up with. However, you'll also find this bar completely overcrowded with obnoxious, prototypical suburbanites with popped-collared, (to quote Jackie) "white-hat-wearing guys" and comparable female companions. The overcrowding, and some of the crowd in general are a big downside to this place in my humble opinion. Oh, and it sports a couple of pool tables you'll never get to play on. I also noticed that street parking is listed as an option here. While that's technically and hypothetically true, unless you're planning to be out by 8:30 PM or on driving around the block for 20 minutes, plan to pay for parking. read more

This place might be very good but I wouldn't know because when me and my friends went for a friends bday., we waited until 12 am for her to go into the bar. While we waited in line, this man (pictured) said that she couldn't go in even though she was legally 21 already!! He blamed it on his boss saying that his boss gave him orders to not let girls in who just turned 21 at 12 am. We where so upset and angry but tried to keep our cool and left. We managed to get in to all the other bars and they even said they don't understand why they didn't let us in. Very upsetting and very unfortunate how the security guards where so unprofessional by laughing at us and making racist remarks that they thought was okay to say because it was "funny to them." Sad! I hope management steps up and addresses this issue of not letting girls celebrate their bdays ! read more

The Worst place to go to have a good time because of the staff/management. The bouncer is a jerk who picks and chooses who he likes, which is not a big deal initially but off-putting. My friends then proceeded to get blamed by the manager for breaking a sign that we had no part in breaking, but they refused to listen to us. The bouncer then threatened us to go downstairs or he would make us go there. These people are horrible who don't even choose to listen to the people who go to their bar, and they treat their patrons like shit. It's sad because the venue itself is nice, but I am never coming back to this shit hole because of how horribly they treat people. If you want to have a fun night with a bar that will not accuse you of random crimes, DO NOT EVER come to this place. read more

We were in town for a friends 30th b-day and stopped in to their old stomping ground from when they were in college. Being one of the later stops in our night, I forgot my debit card. Since we live out of state I couldn't make it back, nor had any friends locally so the managers helped mail me back my card. I recently went here on a Wednesday night after a long hiatus from the downtown Hartford bar scene. There was some crazy plastic cup special where you bought a cup for $9 and then paid $1 to have it refilled as many times as you wanted. Dive bar catered towards a younger crowd. Bar game available like giant jenga, pool table, darts and an outside patio. There was a DJ when I went But they don't play music at a ear drum blowing volume so you can still socialize. Saturday night was semi crowded but had plenty of space to scoot up to the bar and grab a drink. The crowd here are good at sharing jenga and pool so you don't have to wait long to play. Sometimes lots o' fun, sometimes just ok. I've been many, many times and usually check it out anytime I am downtown. I've etched my name on the walls in quite a few spots :) Crowd can vary based on time - at happy hour there is a range of ages (20's, 30's, 40's) but on weekend nights it has been trending younger (early 20's). There are always drink specials - Thursday nights they have $1 Coors Light Drafts and Friday happy hour offers $2 for all drafts - how can you go wrong with a $2 Guinness?? Bartenders are always friendly and laid back. You can go dressed up for the club if you plan on hopping or feel comfortable in jeans and flats. The three pool tables are popular and when it's nice out the rooftop deck is fun (though sometimes the smokers rule out there). The music can vary based on the dj - sometimes old school hip hop, sometimes current music, sometimes a good mix of decades and artists. If you just want good music as a background and you're not snooty about music, you should enjoy it. We usually check out "special occasions" here like Halloween, St Patricks Day, Cinco de Mayo, Mardi Gras and have even gone on Christmas night - they are always open and there's never a cover! read more

Came to Hartford for a business trip and stayed in a nearby hotel so I decided to try something that was in walking distance and remembered passing this place while walking around downtown. The food is amazing. The cornbread is made just right. The Mac n cheese is great too. Also, they have love music every night except on Sunday night and it's just a great atmosphere.
