We tried the BBQ ribs for the first time (offered on Saturday only). They were great!!! No need for any sauce. My wife said the brisket was good, not great, just a bit dry. For dessert we had the coca cola cake (chocolate), which was warm and melted in our mouth. Cost - Ribs dinner (full rack), brisket dinner, dessert and 2 beers = $50. Great find - our time there! Our server Teyana couldn't have been better - funny, prompt without being overbearing and gave me a great recommendation when they were out of my original choice. The pork chop was incredible as were the fries. I wasn't wild about the red coleslaw- I found out it has ketchup in it - but that's just a personal taste thing. The hush puppies were so good with the jalapeño butter. My husband got the pulled pork with limas and loved it! I'm going to rate this place a little differently because, well, it's a little different: Food: 3 stars Service: 4 stars Location/Atmosphere: 5 stars That, of course, averages out to a four-star. The BBQ was just not that impressive. It wasn't bad, but if it was the BBQ alone I don't know that I would come back. The pork/brisket were just okay, and not very juicy. The chicken was pretty good and I'd rank it as their best meat option. The sauces were too sweet for my taste. On another note, the sides and desserts were tremendous, however, and that is where their food game really shined. What makes this place really awesome is that it's located just off of a landing strip and you can watch the planes take off and land during your meal. This makes for a really cool experience that you won't find anywhere else. It's a great day, clear, cool and little wind. Let's fly to Carthage for BBQ. What? And off we went to the Monroe Community Airport southeast of Charlotte to check out an airplane and fly the 45 minutes northeast. Pik N Pig has been around for years and has a simple yet wonderful menu: pulled pork, pork chops and chicken. OK...they also have Deli sandwiches, but why confuse the situation? You land on a fairly short asphalt strip after calling out your intentions on the radio because the airstrip is not towered or manned. We overflew the strip and went into a landing pattern. Once on the ground we parked in the grass strip between the runway and taxiway amongst a half dozen other aircraft. The shacky-like building offers a big patio and lots of seats indoors. Outdoors you can watch the planes land and take off, so that was our choice and our recommendation if you fly or drive there. The pork is wonderful. Soft and moist and smoky, but in contrast to other BBQ one can actually taste the pork. What a treat. Fries were OK, a little underdone, but the hush puppyies were finger-sized globs of delicious, lightly saged sweet dough, which went perfectly with the pork. Yum, yum. They also have catering goodies and vary the menu with specials, like ribs, so you could call them to check out what is what. Cars packed the dirt parking lot, there is a golf driving range and, of course, the planes. Well, after a very relaxing lunch watching a couple of guys driving buckets of golf balls and kids playing catch and all variety of airplane landing and taking off, we ourselves took off for our Charlotte return. Next time I will buy a butt rub T-shirt, but that is another story. How great it was to spend $20 for a lunch and only $225 to get there and back? I have never been a fan of barbecue or meat UNTIL I ATE THEIR BARBECUE! It was life changing! I don't want to go want to go anywhere else for this melt in your mouth and falls apart. This is absolutely the best barbecue in the state of North Carolina. They smoke it in a smoke house for over 24 hours and it results in a highly sought for meal! I love it here! Someone in the group ordered a club sandwich and had to take half home it was a huge sandwich. Everyone in the group of 15 or so enjoyed their food. First, my love for BBQ originates from Texas. Meaning my review comes from the opinion that Texas BBQ is the standard for BBQ. My boyfriend and I shared the Janie and the combo plate of pulled pork and brisket. The brisket was thinly sliced and the plate had about 4 small strips. The pulled pork was hardly pulled. It had more of a shredded texture. The flavor was average. The Janie sandwich was a pork loin sandwich with two small strips of Swiss and cheddar cheese. The description advertised it was smothered with the cheeses, false. The pork loin was tender and the fries were like any other French fry. I did enjoy the thick cut of the fries. The hush puppies were good and the baked beans had great flavor. I loved the sweet tea. True southern sweet tea. I also liked the Idea of having a pitcher of tea at the table. Almost brought it home. The staff was very kind and attentive. Our waitress made great recommendations and was patient with us as we explored the menu. The ambience of the location was great. Every time when I visit North Carolina, I like to have barbecue. If you are ever are in this area, this restaurant offers the best barbecue in the area. I had the tri tip sandwich, fried pickles and smoked wings. Everything was very tasty. The uniqueness of their smokers, wood used, flavor of the meat and the vinegar slightly spicy barbecue sauce make want to come back for more. I almost drenched my french-fries in the barbecue sauce it was amazing. What is unique about this place is the fact that is one of the fly in airports, were people with private planes can stop here for lunch. I would have to argue that this is up here with the best bbq I've ever had. It's always so fresh and delish! I always stop here when I'm in town and will sometimes go out of my way to eat here. My family has been eating this family's BBQ for 4 decades, since they were in Aberdeen/Southern Pines. Great BBQ that stands the test of time. We've never had a bad meal at the Pik N Pig! I always get the BBQ plate. Their BBQ is always the best that I've ever had. I ate this BBQ as a kid back in the 70's and 80's and now I bring my 11 year old son here and he loves it! He's been coming here since he was a little fellow and always loves to watch the planes fly in and out. That's an added side show while you eat! Oh yeah, order the fried dill pickles! Dip them in ranch and Texas Pete and WOOOO WEEEE!! It tastes so good that it'll make you smack your mama! (Although my mother recently passed away and I'd give her a huge hug rather than smacking her!) BBQ this great just doesn't stay around for 40 years "just because". It IS the epitome of NC BBQ!! Ate here recently on a trip to the area, had a nice dinner. It's a ways out in the sticks but definitely worth the extra drive. Parking is abundant and easy. This is a down home classic que venue, can smell the smoke on first entering, beautiful. Nice wide variety on the menu, all the available meats to choose from. Had the sausage, brisket, rib combo - all were perfectly cooked and seasoned, moist and tender. Nice size portions too, they load you up. Sides came out hot and fresh, great friendly service, good variety of sauces to choose from. Good value for the dollar, everything reasonably priced. Would definitely return here if in the area. Funny story: When I first was researching the Carthage/Sanford area online before officially moving here from CA, I looked up the restaurants in the area. When I saw the name Pik N Pig, I was like, "Oh no! Where are we moving too??!!" Boy was I judging a book by it's cover (name)! I LOVE this place! It is such a destination to be seen! The airplanes coming in and the airplane out front, it is seriously fun for the whole family! The food is so fantastic and I have never had anything that wasn't superb. Some of my favorites include the spicy chicken sandwich, the pulled pork platter, the smoked wings and even the pulled pork salad. Make sure you get the hush puppies or the cornbread with the jalapeno butter. The pies for dessert are also great! I had Pik N Pig cater my pre-wedding get together for folks from out of town and everyone loved it! One of the best places in NC! read more

Family drove over 90 minutes to meet us at the restaurant last week only to find out it was closed for the entire week - not cool. We had checked their Facebook page and their website and there was no mention that the restaurant would be closed for a week. Many other PO'd customers in the parking lot with the same story. The owners clearly dont give a crap about their patrons. Good BBQ does not make-up for being disrespectful to your customers. We won't be returning anytime soon. read more

This place is truly awesome. Located next to a county airstrip with some monuments to the Flying Tigers and local aviation heroes, it's one of the most unique places I've ever come for the 'cue. My wife and I opted for the pulled pork plate, me with cole slaw and baked beans, her with vegetable of the day and sweet potato. The food was fantastic. The meat was tender and suculent with just the barest hint of smoke. While I normally go for spicier sauces, I found myself prefering the sweet sauce which had a honey and sweet-onion flavor. The spicy sauce was good, but nothing of particular note. I actually think that the meat was so good it might be better without any sauce at all! Our sides were also good, although the cole slaw was not quite to my taste. We also had the nanner pudding for desert (a rarity for me) and were both impressed. One of the features we liked very much was the pitcher of sweet tea set on the table since it allowed us to refill on our own. Service was friendly although a little slow, but we got there at what appeared to be a rush. We also liked the decor which was country 'cue joint with a nice view of the airfield. Wasn't sure what to expect as I was in from Texas visiting family and I've never heard of eating BBQ at a tiny airport. I went along with it and boy am I glad I did. The family-owned BBQ joint was perfection. Husband and I shared the family platter for two and it was a great way to try their menu items. Portions are child sized. I ordered a combo plate with pulled pork and brisket. I got 3 tiny slices of brisket and a tablespoon's worth of pork. I was like, "What is this? A meal for ants?" For the price I've paid, I expected significantly larger portions. I mean, it's BBQ. Not a French gourmet restaurant. No need to skimp. It's also cash only. Why? I don't know. But get with the times. Many people no longer carry cash and it'll clear up traffic in the dining area from people walking all the way to the back to pull money out of the ATM. If an ATM is around, a card paying system can be outfitted to the register. That being said, the food was actually pretty good. The vinegar based sauce is one of the better ones I've had. What a great place. I've been here twice--over the summer I flew in, and today I took the hour-long drive from Chapel Hill. This review will be just for today, but both visits were pretty similar. The pork is the star of the show here. I got a plate of pork with applesauce, cole slaw, and hushpuppies. It's a good amount of food for under $9. The food came out really quickly, although I will point out that it was warm, not hot. Anyway, the pork is fantastic. Super soft, super tasty, and they have a really good honey BBQ sauce if you like sauce on your pork. The hushpuppies are very light--so much better than the dense balls of cornmeal you get at other places. The slaw was pretty good and so was the applesauce. They were both simple but got the job done and were perfect as sides. Sometimes simple is better. My friend tried the Coca-Cola cake for dessert which he liked and I thought basically was a moist chocolate cake. The people that work here are wonderful--very sweet and Southern. It adds a lot to what already feels like an authentic barbecue place. The best part is that you can fly in, park the plane, and you're here. This place was recommended to me through a business acquaintance. I was so skeptical that I almost didn't go, but I am so glad I did. The service was fantastic - so this is that Southern Charm everyone has been talking about? Fantastic. The food was simple, warm and welcoming, like it came from your grandma's kitchen. I can't say it was anything particularly special, but it was very good. The prices were staggeringly inexpensive and the portions very large. The atmosphere was a little dive-ish and the decor extremely outdated, but it really just enhances the experience. It's one of those places that is like a step back in time - just embrace it. Best BBQ in town! There's a big ol' plane in the parking lot so if it's your first time and you're coming at night don't be scared(cuz we sure as heck were lol)! I haven't had a single thing that I didn't like and that is saying a lot. I just wish the portions were bigger. They also don't offer cornbread which is kind of heartbreaking. We love the wings but since they're so pricey for a half dozen, we don't get as much as we would like. They have a cute outdoor seating area.
