I'd seen this recommend by others on the Facebook group SGV Eats and decided to give it a try. I got an Egg Heaven sandwich for myself and my bf, a taro ube cake and an earl grey grape cake. First I'll say the place itself is small but cute. The ladies working there was wonderful! I had a lovely conversation with Jacklyn (sorry if I spelled her name wrong) and it made the wait fly by. The sandwich was very tasty, but massively overpriced for the small portion. The taro ube cake...near flavorless and very dry. But the earl grey cake was unique and tasty. But neither were worth the price either. It's the pricing that's made this lose stars for me. I'd give it 3.5 if I could. But really that's because I enjoyed the conversation and the food was decent. I've been meaning to try this place forrrrrrr foreverrr - I finally did and I'm glad it didn't disappoint! My friend and I shared two sandwiches. I got the okonomiyaki sandwich and my friend got the one with spam. The bread was very soft and the bonito flakes added a really nice umami to the eggs which were nice and fluffy. I also liked that the cabbage gave the sandwich added texture along side the bacon. The spam one was also really good too! We opted to wait to get coffee across the street so we ended up getting the black sesame cake for dessert. It was good! Not too sweet, and the container it comes in is also cute! The person who helped us was also very nice. She offered us water and was very patient with all the questions I had about their cakes hahah. The ambiance inside is pretty simple and casual. A family member brought 6 sandwiches and 4 desserts, all in different flavors. Overall, the flavors were okay, but they are a bit pricy. Sandwiches: My favorite was the Mentaiko. Not much mentaiko there but enough to know that you are eating mentaiko without the sandwich being too salty. Egg Heaven and Tamagoyaki were also delicious, but not much creativity in flavor. But this is fine; sometimes you want that classic flavor. Musubi, Okonomiyaki, and Pork Floss were too salty. However, I appreciated the Asian flavors mixed into the traditional egg sandwich; gave me ideas for my next egg salad sandwich. Dessert: We had Oreo, Black Sesame, Matcha, and Taro. They come in tin cans, which I assume is reusuable, but seemed unnecessary. It probably contributed to the price which I thought was a bit high. Overall, the flavors were not strong enough. And if you don't like mousse-based desserts, this is not for you. They have a layer of sheet cake, but most of it is mousse. While I enjoyed trying the different flavors, I was not impressed. The concept is great and the food is Instagrammable. But I would work on the flavor balance and consider switching the tin can to something less permanent and sustainable. read more

Egg salad itself was good but the execution of the sandwich was a bit lacking. Because the sandwich is cut into third the size of each piece is on the small size which makes the egg salad want to fall out. I was also expecting an egg salad sandwich similar to the ones in Japan and other places in the US which are not toasted. This is the first one I ever had that was toasted. Such a cute little place! I actually drove down here from Antelope Valley when visiting there from the Central Valley and it did not disappoint!! I got so much food to bring back on the drive and the lady was so sweet, she offered to pack it up with ice packs and keep it in the freezer until we were ready to leave! She even came over and chatted with us while we were seated and we were fortunate enough to hear the origin of the place and many other delightful stories from her business. I got several cakes: the Grape Earl Grey, Taro Ube, Black Sesame, and Kinako Chestnut. I also got the Egg Heaven and Mentaikoyaki sandwiches (we loved both!) along with the Strawberry Fruit sandwich (last one) and a Raspberry Lemon Muffin Top like the clip from Seinfeld! My company got a Cappuccino and then wanted to try the Dirty Matcha, but the lady was so sweet to warn her about the caffiene content and offer her a cup of water in the meantime as my company had divulged that caffiene does sometimes make her jittery. We got the Matcha Mango instead of the Dirty Matcha and it was exquisite! We got a Yuzu Fruit Refresher for the drive back and it was sparkling in the best way, and I say this as someone not normally fond of carbonated beverages. I'm super excited to re-use the cake tins and I'll update this review with a picture when I do. I am in love with their environmentally-friendly conscious effort to have containers that can be upcycled. Stopped in with my boyfriend for a tamagoyaki, Japanese egg sandwich, delicious fluffy folded omelettes with kewpie mayonnaise and lightly sweet bread tucked neatly into its tray. It was the perfect lunch to take out and eat at the park on a sunny day. It was so filling we probably could have shared one sandwich. Fast friendly service too. We also grabbed an Ube latte, and we couldn't stop remarking on how good it was, not too sweet with just the right intensity of yam, a great warm cup for this cozy season. We will be back! read more

Pillow Talk in Pasadena is a great place to stop by for lunch. It specializes in Japanese-style sandos and layer cakes. The Okonomiyaki sando, made to order and served warm, is delicious and also surprisingly filling. The layer cakes are made I n cute reusable silver tins. The earl grey grape stole the show for me! They also have artisan bakery items like cookies and matcha muffin tops. I got one of each and really enjoyed them. Service is friendly and helpful, but the cafe itself is a little odd. It was empty when I came and seemed to not get a ton of traffic. I also thought it was a little weird that a cafe wouldn't have a public restroom, but I asked nicely and staff let me use it. Sanitation could be improved. There's a vent on the ceiling that's pretty filthy. I noticed when a spider dangled down on a thread from the vent as I was eating. I googled this cute and cozy cafe awhile back, and finally came in today. It was clean, great lighting and the employees were very informative and helpful. It has been around since 2019, definitely check them out when or if your in the Pasadena area; it's worth it! They have a cute display of amazing looking treats and a wide spread of yummy drinks. I originally saw the matcha strawberry online but when I went in I got their special. Iced matcha with mango. Trust me when I say it was to die for! The matcha drink was so creamy and not overpowering. It was the best part of my morning. She did say I would love the matcha. Along with my drink I also got one raspberry lemon muffin top, and a Japanese strawberry cake. It tasted like heaven light, fluffy and lightly sweet. I will be back again thank you ! read more

Omg what a cute hidden gem!! The space itself looks small on the outside but once you go in you'll see there are plenty of tables to sit at. Such a great study spot (with outlets!!). Really cute yet unassuming place, about the size of half a typical store, sandwiched between two larger stores along Lake Ave. It would be easy to miss if you weren't paying attention! But walk in, and you are immediately greeted by the loveliest, warmest lady (who I presume to be the owner) that is just bursting with smiles and sunshine. She told us all about their delectable sandwiches, amazingly creative (and gorgeously presented) cakes and incredible blended drinks. We sampled two of their blended drinks, a savory Japanese-style sandwich and the "Sunnyside Up" (mango and coconut) and Tiramisu cakes, both served in very aesthetically pleasing steel tins that you can take home to keep. Pillow Talk is just right there in quaint downtown Pasadena. My friend and I made our way here almost on accident as we tried to churn through another rough week of school. I ordered the ube latte and he got the honeycomb latte. They were pretty standard, I would say -- pretty good, but not extremely memorable. I think the star of their show is the desserts, but we weren't really in a dessert kind of mood when we went, so we didn't try them. There's enough seating for most people because it's not super busy, and the tables are well sized. The storefront does face west, so if you're getting there in the afternoon, keep the lighting in mind as the sun starts to set. read more

Genuinely the slowest service I have ever had. They messed up the drink order. They charged me for a cheesecake when I got a muffin and the staff tried to cover it up and were whispering about it. What a very pleasant surprise to discover Japanese Sando at Pillow Talk on South Lake in Pasadena!What a find! The young lady who helped us was absolutely charming - so kind and polite and informative. We made our purchases of a variety of Sandos, refrigerated them overnight, and are now enjoying them at this very moment in flight. What a treat! The wonderfully delicious sandwiches are boxed in custom sized containers that seal perfectly. The ingredients and attention to detail in the preparation of the food is top notch. Pillow talk makes such simple but delicious sandwiches. I had the pleasure of trying their egg heaven sandwich which had more flavor than I thought. Their cakes also come in this little tin can which makes it stand out from a typical slice of cake. Their matcha cake had a really good matcha taste, not too sweet and not too bitter. They also had this cake that looked like it had an egg on top, but it was mango and coconut flavor. Very creative and home-y concept. Definitely will check them out again next time I'm around Pasadena. Service was good and fast. The store is also very clean with tables for you to study while enjoying some dessert or small snack. Everything was exceptional! I loved how fluffy the eggs were in the sandwiches. I loved the okonomiyaki sandwich more, as it had bacon and cabbage! The mentaikoyaki was good too. Both sandwiches were incredibly filling, savory, and delicious! The sandwiches are ENORMOUS too. I would definitely recommend getting these as a quick, on-the-go meal! As a huge mango lover, the "Sunny Side Up" cake was heavenly! The cake had a super fluffy and light consistency and a strong mango taste. It wasn't too sweet either! I loved the tiramisu as well. My friend and I ordered the okonomiyaki and mentaikoyaki. The salted pollock roe was barely there so if that was the case I would have just ordered the original. The okonomiyaki is really good though. I've also never tried a matcha latte with mango and now I'm obsessed. There was a nice nutty flavor to the rich latte. The honeycomb latte was amazing! There were crispy toasty chunks of honeycomb distributed over the top of the tasty latte. The sweet and flaky pieces of honeycomb melted into the delectable latte giving the coffee a full bodied toasty sweet honey flavor. Delicious! Cute place on south lake! Honestly not sure I keep missing this place. It's next to T-pumps so maybe the crowds of teenagers obscures this place. They have sandwiches and some desserts but I just came to try some coffee. The cold brew comes in little sealed plastic containers. There are a couple of indoor seats. My friends and I went here, as we like to try different cafes. I like how this one had a unique offering, which were the tin can cakes. I ordered a honeycomb latte for myself, and we got 2 cakes to share. For the latte, I was actually initially interested in the tiramisu latte, but after a conversation with the shop attendee, I was left confused and unclear about what was in the drink and what made it "tiramisu". The honeycomb latte at first sip just tasted like milk, even when I was drinking from the top where the espresso was. After a bit, the dalgona started melting in and creating more flavor, but it still wasn't super flavorful. A friend who got the same drink liked that it tasted more like a coffee milk, but if I wanted to drink coffee milk I would've gotten a tetra pack from H-Mart. It probably also tasted more milky because there was only one shot of espresso, whereas most places usually do 2 or increase the shot amount the larger your drink is. Some other friends got matchas and said they were good, but not very strong in flavor. The cakes saved my experience. These were delicious and I would come back solely to try all of the different flavors. They were creamy and moist and uber flavorful. The strawberry tasted very much like a strawberry, and the matcha yuzu tasted more like matcha than yuzu to me (although my friends said it was very yuzu-y, maybe I just wasn't eating the parts where the yuzu was). Parking is a bit tough so we just parked in a parking lot a couple blocks away. read more
