Went here when they used to serve dim sum but now they just do American Chinese and authentic Chinese food. Service is was good, but server was a bit too loud. Food was tasty. I've by-passed this family owned Asian restaurant for many, many years. A family member told me a while back they frequent it because the food is good and it's close to home. Finally, I gave it a try a few days ago and it did not disappoint. The husband/wife team were welcoming and even assisted with suggesting one sauce over another to compliment the entree' and I'll tell you, what a great choice! The food was delicious!!! The service from the duo was so refreshing. You can tell they take pride in their business and value their customers. Each one that entered was treated like family. I was thoroughly impressed. The ambiance was nice, clean, relaxing and beautifully decorated. Unfortunately I could only gave it 4 stars vs 5 because there was one stinkin' drawback. One employee had a nasty, stuck-up, unkind, downright funky disposition. It put a damper on the visit, but overall the owners were so nice I had to give THEM their props! I told them I'd be back and when I return, I plan to let them know that this person needs a real customer-service-make-over. I enjoyed the premium ingredients, the recently remodeled dining area and the efficient, professional service during my dine-in lunch. The sea bass with seasoned veggies lunch ($11.95) included pork fried rice, egg drop soup and choice of crab rangoon or egg roll. The soup was served just a couple of minutes after I ordered at the table, and the entree was served just eight minutes after I ordered - nice! The sign outside says "fine Chinese cuisine" and I agree. Everything was first rate, and the portions were generous. I liked the tasty sea bass, the light and flavorful sauce, the good variety of perfectly cooked veggies and the delicious fried rice. I have been coming to Pine and Bamboo since I was a little girl. Our family always feels like family when we stop in here, that's just the way the owners are... it's not because they know us. Even the service for take out is just as amazing. I have a lot of food allergies that make it almost difficult to eat at any Asian restaurant and P&B has always been a safe and respected my allergies. I have still to date never had to send my food back because they made it wrong. On top of making great food that is allergy friendly for me, I normally have to compromise on taste but P&B has the best tasting Chinese/Japanese food I've had EVER. Pine and Bamboo is a cute little mom and pop owned restaurant. They have made updates to the place, giving them a fresh look but it's still romantic and quaint. You can go in dressed up or casual and it's still fees right to be there. I always recommend this place and family and friends from out of town crave it. read more

This restaurant can be very enjoyable. The dining room is attractive, and the menu includes many options, both Americanized and authentic Chinese. They also have a full bar with good choices of wines. Unlike some Chinese restaurants, this one has the option of brown rice, which is much more healthy than the usual white rice. They also offer Atkins and other options for persons with dietary restrictions. Many of their sauces include chicken broth and sugar, but they will remove those ingredients, if you wish. What particularly impressed me was the Seabass with Szechwan Sauce. Unfortunately seafood is often not a plus in Chinese restaurants. About the only seafood I often order in Chinese restaurants is shrimp. In China, I am even more hesitant to order seafood, since in China everyone seems to think that the bones should remain in the fish. I do not at all like having to pick the bones out of the fish. In China the only way to get fish filet without bones is to go to an international hotel having many international guests. The seabass at this restaurant comes in frozen, but is defrosted daily. I was very happy with the seabass, which was much better than the fish that is usually served in American Chinese restaurants. Also I very much liked the Szechwan spicy sauce. I asked that the sauce be prepared without sugar or chicken broth. Although that was a substantial change in their usual preparation, it was excellent. I liked it a lot. As an appetizer, we ordered the Shrimp Toast. We liked it a lot. It is common in Dim Sun, but not so common as an appetizer. There are parking spaces directly in front of the restaurant on the Shawnee Mission Pkwy frontage road. We parked there. But it might be more convenient to use the parking lot behind the restaurant. read more

Five stars for consistency, which is difficult to achieve, but is the exact reason we keep going back. Wife and I share a meal, some apps, and sometimes have a cup of soup. Almost never are we ever disappointed, and that disappointment was just once, during Covid lockdown, and stuff was just too done. The girls get triple delight, I always get my go to and get sesame chicken the best I have ever had. Prices have went up but the cook tonight made sure I got my moneys worth. I drove quite a distance to not get what I really wanted, but the Google search still shows them as dim sum. Nice little place for dim sum on KC. When I moved here from Boston, I didn't think I'd be able to find a place to get my dim sum fix - pine bamboo mostly fits the bill. Atmosphere: tucked away in Shawnee mission, cozy and dark inside. Not too loud, good for families (they have big tables available). Food: I only tried their dim sum on the weekends - they had dim sum carts roaming around which was nice. They have a nice selection of dim sum, including Shu mai, shrimp dumplings, rice rolls, tofu skin rolls, chicken feet, egg tarts, etc. Sadly, they do not have steamed char siu bad (BBQ pork buns) - they only have the baked kind. The dim sum quality is alright - it isn't what I'm used to in Hong Kong and Boston, but it'll do for KC. The most disappointing thing about this place is the TEA. Those of us who are from Cantonese families understand that a core part of dim sum (aka "yum cha" = "drink tea" in Hong Kong) is drinking TEA when eating dim sum. their tea selection is awful, and does not typically go with dim sum. As a long time consumer of dim sum, this place is alright, but for the area, I get that this may be the best I will find. Parking is scarce in the front. There is more parking in the back. There are two entrances. Seating is interesting. Unlike the traditional Chinese restaurant layout of big open space. Was seated right next to the back entrance during the winter. Not fun. They had cart service which is always nice and the most diverse cart pushing work force I have ever encountered in my 33 years of life. Two types of shumai. No radish cake fry cart. One of my favorite Chinese Restaurants for dim sum on the weekend. I came here for lunch today where they have the carts that's full of different dim sum items. The dim sum cart is from 11am to 3pm on the weekends only. The way the pricing works - for every item you get it will depends on the size and item of the dish. There are (S)mall [cost: $4.35], (M)edium [cost: $4.55], (L)arge [cost: $4.85], and (X-L)arge [cost: $5.95] size dishes and so the servers will stamp it on your bill according to which dishes you get. It does add up when the servers are constantly coming around to you, so it can be expensive for lunch time. I would expect to spend at least $20-30/person. There were four of us including a child and it was a total of $80. The service is quick, you will usually have different servers coming around to refill your drink and take away empty dim sum tins. If you don't know what kinds of dishes to get, some recommendations are: BBQ Pork Bun (S), Pork Siu Mai (M), Spareribs (M), Shark's Fins Dumplings (L), Siu Mai King (L), Shrimp Dumplings/Siu Mai (L), Beef Tendons (X-L). There are so many dishes to try. If you're new to dim sum and not sure what is in each item, just ask the servers and try to be a little open to trying new authentic Chinese food! I was super bummed that they no longer serve dimsum when I saw information online that said otherwise. Also, upon arrival, they had stacks of takeout menus that still say they have dimsum. Needless to say, that was super disappointing. Though I arrived around 2pm and it was pretty empty (3 tables, 5 customers total), no one greeted or sat me for 10 minutes. I couldn't even ask for help because no one was visible; they were all in the kitchen. When a server finally came out, she was very nice. We ordered the salt and pepper squid and cod in black bean sauce. I think the addition of mushrooms in the cod dish, would've made it better. It was good, but needed a little something. The squid I would've liked a little crispier and saltier. It didn't taste super flavorful. Again, service was great when we finally received it and food was ok, but it didn't hit the spot when we went in under the impression they would have (and with the craving for) dimsum. read more

Yummy! Good lunch prices and pretty much has everything a Chinese place would ever need to offer! It's right off of Shawnee Mission Parkway so it's quite easy to get there from most locations in any direction. There are several Chinese places in the area, so the fact that this one stands out and is nice and clean, is definitely a plus! It wasn't crowded at all and the food came out quick. Their dim sum here is really good! They have a wide variety of items on their push cart. They can get busy really quickly upon opening, so get there early! Also, all parties must be present in order to be seated. My favorite items as part of their dim sum includes the pork siu mai, shrimp fun roll, chicken feet, bbq pork bun, Chinese sausage/shrimp rice, and Chinese egg tarts amongst many other items. For dine-in ordering we always order the salty fish friend rice! Also, their dragon rolls are to die for!! I could eat 10 of these, one after another easily! It's like crab rangoons on crack. Only complaint is service could be friendlier. They seem to not be very appreciative of their customers' business - probably because they're so busy, but even so, I don't believe that's good for business. read more

I went with the Kansas City International Foodie Groups. There were 11 of us. It was Sunday and they bought their food out on carts. Our large table had a round circle that turned int he middle so everyone could have different dim sum. There were chop sticks, but I requested forks, as did several of us. I think we had almost all of the 60 some odd choices of dim sum. I am picky. I didn't eat the squid or the egg tart or the soup.I didn't eat this thing that I couldn't figure out what it was. I did have jasmine tea, then I had sticky buns with barbeque pork, meatballs that were fair. I had sticky buns with regular pork.I had sticky buns with shrimp and something else. I sampled bok choy and Chinese broccoli which I really liked. Then they bring out the shrimp wrapped sugar cane. I've not had shrimp wrapped sugar cane since I went to NYC. They make their shrimp wrapped sugar caned different, as not to pound the shrimp thin, but fry the shrimp then add the sugar cane in the middle. I had tofu skins which I like, these had shrimp and mushrooms in the middle. There were also barbecue ribs, of some sort. They had turnip cake, but it resembled hasbrowns and tasted turnipy, rather than the sweet turnip cake at Bolings. Someone in our group ordered the flaming volcano. Watch that, cause it's strong. It's the type of drink you don't realize is strong until you've had too much. It was served in a large serving bowl, with long straws, and a flame in the middle. It tasted like fruit punch. I was hoping they'd bring out something else sweet. I think that's all I disliked about it, was lack of dessert dim sum. I've had dim sum before, but I liked Pine and Bamboo Garden. It's in an odd location with a strip mall. It's a little out of my way to visit often, but it was fun as a group. For 11 of us, it cost each of us mostly 21.33. It was a great experience. read more

The GPS on my phone navigated me correctly to this restaurant. The reason I say that was because there was a road adjacent to Shawnee Mission Pkwy. There was additional parking in the back but I found a spot in the front. We had probably 14 people and we all managed to fit at a huge round table with a lazy susan that was overloaded by the amount of food we ordered. This place had a lunch menu I believe or you can go dim sum style where you can pick what you want from the multiple carts roaming around. We also ordered 3 different kinds of tea: black, jasmine, and chrysanthemum. I seriously can't remember what we ordered from the carts but whatever I ate was delicious! I haven't had dim sum for such a long time when I used to live in California. It was pretty busy around 12pm on a Saturday. Of course, our group came when they opened on Saturday which was at 11am. This is one of my go to places when I'm in the Kansas City area. I haven't gotten the chance to try their lunch or dinner dishes, only their Dim Sum. There aren't many good Dim Sum Restaurants in Kansas, but myself, family, and friends really enjoy this place. They service dim sum by menu on weekdays and have more of a selection by carts on weekend. Weekends can get really packed and food comes out very slow. However, even though the selection is limited on weekdays it comes out hot and fresh! My favorites are the Ham Sui Gok, Ha Gao, and Sui Mai. Ham Sui Gok had a great meat and crispy outside ratio-simply delicious. The food is a tad over salted and can be greasy, so order hot tea. The staff is usually friendly and the food comes out quick. Prices are good for the quality and food you get. Now I'm craving dim sum. read more

This review is based entirely on my take out experience. I placed an order for a whole Peking Duck around 2 p.m. online for pickup at 5 p.m. The duck was promptly ready by the time my boyfriend came to pick it up, and because I had already paid online, he was in and out very quickly. I was worried that it wouldn't come with steamed buns, but I worried for nothing, because the lady that gave my boyfriend the order make sure to let him know that there was buns in the bag. It also came with sauce, cucumbers, and chives, so that you had everything you need to make your baos. The Peking duck although expensive, was delicious. It was deliciously moist and tender, and it was enough to feed my boyfriend and I with some leftovers for tomorrow. We walked in to order takeout. The restaurant itself looked really nice. Not too crowded and seems like it would be a nice place to grab lunch or have a sit down dinner. My wife ordered crab Rangoon and sesame chicken. The kids ordered sesame chicken as well. The crab Rangoon and egg rolls were amazing. The fried dumplings were doughy and tasted more steamed than fried. The rice noodles were cooked perfectly but lacked flavor. It need more curry seasoning. The sesame chicken and the ginger basil chicken were both extremely bland. There was neither any basil nor any ginger in the ginger basil chicken. And the chicken in both dishes tasted like it was cooked with zero seasoning. (It very much resembled the food they serve you in hospitals when you're supposed to be on a low sodium diet.)
