Went with my wife and three sons on Mother's Day for what we anticipated to be a wonderful buffet breakfast. My son who made the reservation asked specifically if the service would include the traditional buffet (which we had experienced and thoroughly enjoyed on a prior year) and was told all was the same. Well, we arrived on MD to find no buffet whatsoever. There was a "special" MD menu which was lacking in most aspects, limited options, and poor choices. At no time did any of the staff people mention Mother's Day at all! It is customary to make some sort of acknowledgement of MD to the person of honor. Typically, a complimentary Mimosa, flower, card, something. Well, they had nothing!. At the very least they could have wished her a nice day. (Do you think!) The food was priced very fairly. The quality was OK. The service was acceptable. To tell you the truth I expect better on Mother's Day. We were there to honor my wife and instead we got an uninspired meal, casual service, average quality food. We will not go back. Next year we will try Crossings at the Riverhouse. We made a reservation here and showed up after they were supposed to have been open but the door was locked and has the closed sign up. We could see people inside and tried to get their attention but they ignored us. It was about 15° outside so making customers wait in the freezing cold past when the restaurant is supposed to be open is pretty silly. We've eaten here before and the food is alright but not great but we wanted to give it another shot. That was a mistake though and we won't be going back. read more

Some coworkers and I went there for lunch. They had a deal on Wednesday - $5 dollar burger. The burger was delicious and well prepared. I think the $5 burger lunch on Wednesday might be an ongoing thing. Our waiter was friendly and we received great service. Had heard that they were offering brunch. Being one that loves brunch, figured I'd give it a try. Definitely won't be returning (unless maybe it's for evening beverages). Went to the back (garden) room where it was supposed to be a bit more quiet, but the Dean Martin style music was a wee bit too much. I'm fine with a couple songs in the "crooning" style, but after about 15 minutes or so, enough was enough. Headed up to the bar area where it felt more comfortable (it could be that they cater to the 90's age group in the back). While the servers and staff were great, I almost walked out because the food was so horrible. The biscuits tasted like Poppin' Fresh Biscuits from the container. The cajun style sausage with my omelet tasted like it also came from a can (the cajun bean absolutely had to have come from a can - I asked for no bay shrimp - my guess is they hand picked them out because the taste was still there)...simply not anything I would ever recommend to anyone. The setting and atmosphere is nice but the service is lacking substantially. We arrived an hour before closing and they refused to sit us anywhere but in the bar area. The food prices weren't bad for a decent restaurant in the area but the coffee that we ordered was about room temperature and tasted like it had been sitting on the burner all day. I read a wonderful article about the pines that grow through the restaurant but was highly disappointed that we didn't even get to see them. This seemed like a really cute place to grab a drink or quaint dinner. However, we were very disappointed when we ordered our take-out dinner. We ordered off the special Christmas Day menu, which featured just a few options for the holiday. We expected to pay a premium on xmas, but we expected MUCH more for our $70 bill. Our "ham dinner" consisted of 3 thin slices of dry, overcooked ham, about 4 slices of potatoes au gratin, less than a spoonful of butternut squash, and a few green beans. The salmon dinner was more pathetic, with about an ounce of salmon filet, and even smaller portion sides than that of the ham dinner. Never again. read more

A tradition in Bend, its been around since 1936. You must try it once on your visit. I lived in Bend for some years and enjoyed taking visitors here. Situated downtown on the river, the place has some decent eats and great atmosphere. Check out the tree growing through the dining room. If its summer, go eat on the patio. This place is excellent! My wife and I came here on a date night and got a patio table surrounded by trees with a great view of the river. The scones with honey butter were delicious and so were our meals. I got the flat iron steak, and my wife ordered the chicken fried chicken breast. On a sunny day, the outdoor seating at the Pine Tavern is just about as good as it gets. Gorgeous. Right on the bank of the Dechutes river nestled in huge pine trees surrounded by lush greens and flowers. The service was great. Only complaint was that when we put our name in the wait was one hour. Halfway into that wait we walked around back just to see the view and it turned out that the FAR superior outdoor seating was only half full. They don't tell you up front that your choices are either to wait an hour and then sit inside, or be seated immediately out back on the beautiful patio. Maybe the hostess just forgot to say, who knows. The prime rib was excellent. All that one could want from a prime rib. All natural hormone free Oregon country beef, cooked to perfection, accompanied by a nice horseradish cream sauce and au-jus. My step-mother's salmon was quite dry, though. The wine was very reasonably priced. All in all, highly recommended. Just lost the one star because of having to wait 30 minutes unnecessarily and the dry salmon. Bend, on the other hand, gets an all around 5 stars. Rock on, Oregon. read more

Took the family here because 3 out of the 4 of us wanted burgers and there was a special running in the lounge for their 1/2 pounder and homemade chips. The burger special was a good deal - nice meaty burger, fairly lean, charbroiled, with all the normal condiments. I stole some avocado slices from my wife's salad and that completed the picture. Given the quality of the burgers and great special pricing, I would rate Pine Tavern 4 stars. Of course, there was a wrinkle to all this - my wife's Cobb Salad. Moderate sized, fairly fresh, but very very ordinary. Plus it was watery (either they did not dry the lettuce fully or the dressing was too diluted). It came out limp, thin and bland. For a $15 salad, we had higher expectations and it rated a mere 2 stars. Service was so-so. Our waitress was prompt and got the order right, but kept trying to clear off our plates even if there was still food remaining on them. She gave me the distinct impression that she was trying to get rid of us even though the lounge was half empty. Maybe she was disappointed that we did not all order $30 entrees and all the trimmings in the dining room.... Nice location by the river, with a nice, comfortable, somewhat upscale decor inside. In the end, if I were to return, it would only be for the Wed burger special. Not sure that the rest of the menu would be worth it, but then again our sample size was small. read more

First time going here while visiting with my family. I enjoyed the happy hour food items; artichoke dip and deviled eggs were enjoyable. Prices good for happy hour. I was looking forward to an old style pub; but, it seems the establishment has really lost its 1936 originality both in the building architecture itself, as well as, the interior ambiance. I tried to pay for the bill as a surprise for my family. Whomever was taking care of us got offended that I 1.) Flagged you down to pay 2.) Mistakenly called them "a server" instead of their title for the night "bartender." Both employees involved were clear in their physical body language and verbal communication about how annoyed they were with helping me (rolling eyes; unapproachable body language; no smiling; never asked how they could be of help). I'd love to tell that bartender, whomever you are, "get over yourself, bud." When people need help, they're going to use whatever terms they have at their disposal to describe how and who they need help from. It's the job of serving staff to be helpful and to serve people. It's why it's called "the service industry." Your attitude can make or break connecting with people positively or negatively; unfortunately, this interaction ended negatively. I'd also like to say Thank You to you and your female coworker for showing your true colors and letting me know that my money and time are not welcome here. All in all, the afternoon snack was great! Thank you kitchen staff! But, I'll be taking my money and my family elsewhere when we visit Bend again. read more

This place is great top to bottom. Food, service, view, and anything else I can think of was great. The waiter we had was very accommodating as we had our 2.5 year old daughter with us. From the moment we sat down he was prepared to help us even bringing her order within minutes of ordering. The food was fantastic. I had the rib eye and it was cooked perfect. Also the pork loin was incredible. They make these little rolls that I think they said were sour dough but they were like warm doughnuts served with honey butter. I have learned to use Yelp when going out and generally always read the reviews and go with the higher rated business. There is a reason why this comes up with as many stars as it does. read more

Really disappointed in the Pine Tavern last night after giving them multiple chances. Went in just for dessert this time and ordered the Mud Pie. I have had this dessert here before and it was excellent. This time it had about a half inch layer of clear gooey ice showing just how old the ice cream was. Also the part that still looked like ice cream had giants shards of ice in it and tasted so old. The half inch layer of gooey ice that clearly did not look like ice cream is very easy to notice, I have no idea why they even served this to us. For an $11.95 dessert you expect a little more than this... The first time we had eaten here for Happy Hour everything tasted like it came straight from the freezer. Safe to say third time was not the charm and we will not be back, or ever recommend this place to someone. There's plenty of other great places here for more reasonable prices to recommend. Oh and on top of it, when I got my change back they didn't even bother to bring the nickel back with it. Apparently they only give change back to the whole dollar and don't do coins here. read more

We have tried to give the Pine Tavern our business for years. Except for the hamburger on happy hour we have NEVER had a good meal. Even the scones used to be great (dessert before dinner) but now they're flat and greasy tasting. Our fish & chips tonight were the worst and the special Halibut was very salty and very slow service. Such a beautiful location and a historic Bend destination- so sad that the food is not up to par given all the great restaurants in Bend we won't be back. read more

The only reason its getting a 2 star review is because their happy hour is okay. Decent deals for alright food, but thats about the only time their food is acceptable. We went for dinner on a Saturday and was surprised that it was dead, but it made sense once we got our food. The steak was so weirdly done on my salad it tasted like charcoal. The rest of the salad was okay so I'm glad to see they didn't mess up lettuce. This place would be okay if they didn't think it was acceptable to charge what they are. Gorgeous view out on the patio. The prices are a little steep based on amount of food but the atmosphere was top notch. I had the chicken fried chicken. The chicken was excellent but the mashed potatoes were barely warm without any gravy. My husband got the filet and said it was excellent but his baked potato was small. For the price, please use a large potato and make the customer feel like they are getting their money! The children's half turkey sandwich was real turkey and our daughter was very happy with the serving. The servings are not large and if you were really hungry you should order an appetizer or salad. The drinks were a decent pour. The scones with honey butter were really yummy! Overall, despite the price to serving size we would come back. I would recommend this place for the ambience alone. Hell, how often do you get to eat dinner at a place with a tree growing in the middle of the room? My filet was so tender and buttery soft that I only needed my fork to cut it. Also, while speaking of butter..they bring out an endless basket of scones with a honey butter before your meal. Try and ccontrol yourself now, the good stuff is coming right up! The wine list was a bit disappointing, but we chose a nice, hearty red that complimented the meat. OVERRATED... Some friends and I met for lunch today, we were on the earlier side of lunch- which turned out to be good. We walked in and asked if we had reservations? WTF? Then we were told to wait in waiting area- although clearly they weren't busy and we ended up being seated in like a minute. Thank goodness I was told to ask to sit near the tree- which means in this great sunny room where the tree is actually inside- pretty cool. All other seating was weird. This place tries to be nice and fancy but then they play up the country bumpkin in them- old chairs, mismatched plates and napkins...strange. Service was ok- seemed like they were rushing us and they probably were because they picked up and got busy pretty quick. Food options were good, I had the special - fish with rice (yum) but my other two companions had the mozz/chicken salad and the other had fried oysters with rice- mine was the best. Then my friends(dessert lovers) ordered the mud pie- waitress said she'd get that going and not like 2 minutes later- a huge frozen pie covered in whip cream appeared- obviously it had been frozen a while because it was rock like and waaay too much whip cream for a decent restaurant to consider serving. This place is an institution in Bend. It is always hard to pass up visiting it when in the area. We had 7:45 p.m. reservations, but arrived about 20 minutes early. The hostess said no problem, and within 5 minutes we were seated. Dinner was good (the hot rolls and honey butter are excellent) and we were all happy with our meal. But our waiter was a rude snob (I think his name was Homer or Horace or something like that's he didn't introduce himself) and seemed to be offended that we didn't order more expensive meals. Even though he was an ass (and probably lost the place at least on star) I wold return, although their dinner prices seem to be on the rise - $32 for an 8 oz. fillet, I think is a little over the top. read more

We've been visiting Bend since 2009, and relocated here the beginning of the year. As foodies, the Pine Tavern was one of the few establishments we haven't tried over the years. Last night we had dinner there with another couple, and unfortunately won't be going back. Our experience was a disaster from the minute we sat down as our waiter appeared hostile, agitated, and was void of any interpersonal skills. It was almost as if we were inconveniencing this gentleman by having him wait on our table. The food was strictly average, not consistent with what you would expect for an establishment charging $20 - $35 per entree. While I was excited to give this place a shot, I'd prefer to spend my dough at a place like Zydeco--where both the service and food is off the charts...each and every time you visit. read more

This is a fine place for Bend Or. They told us it was a hour wait, but we went around back and saw that the out door dining was half empty and they sat us there right away. It was a July evening and the weather was fantastic and the ambiance in the outdoor dining area is fantastic. The Deschutes river is nearby with geese swimming by and lovely trees shading the area. Why it didn't occur to the Maitre'de to offer us the outdoor seating I'll never know but you be sure to ask. The inside was fashionably old and crowded, but the locals didn't want to be outside in the beautiful weather. The prime rib was great, cooked just right and it's hard to screw up a baked potato, so the food was just fine. It's not the kind of place I would go to frequently, but rather it is an"institution" in Bend and you are supposed to be happy to just be there so that you can say you went to the Pine Tavern and people look at you admiringly. This is a place you bring your wife to, but not a place you bring your girlfriend to to impress her (unless of course she is from Bend). There are a lot more exciting restaurants in Bend. read more

I rate this place a 3 because the food was just okay. Also, if we would have had to sit inside our experience wouldn't have been quite as enjoyable. I had a burger which was cooked just right but pretty bland. My wife had the smoked salmon salad and it was pretty tasty. Just as others have said, the rolls and honey butter were amazing. The house honey mustard vinigarette dressing was delicious! Outdoor seating is right on the river so if at all posible get a table out there and you'll enjoy your experience. read more

Came in with my family and before I could open my mouth we were basically told to leave. Hostess said "dining room closed! Patio is full! No one under 21 in the front! Adios!" as she looked off into space not making eye contact like a lost astronaut. First of all - there is nothing on their website or posted on their door about not serving minors. Second of all - there is better and more respectful way to communicate this to newcomers and potential customers. Perhaps she can get more training or move back to the east coast. Will never return and Not recommended for families and not recommended for anyone else as there are better and more respectful local spots to support. read more

Food was good - blackened rockfish - but service was incredibly slow. Took forever to be seated on a slow Tuesday late lunch with a nearly empty restaurant. Took a long time to get a wine list, which oddly had been removed from the table after our food order was taken. Entree came before soup, so cancelled the soup. Check was slow to arrive and incorrect as well. Nice ambiance and good chef but would consider frustration factor before choosing this restaurant. Also didn't care for the manager confronting a mail carrier at the front of the restaurant because the carrier couldn't do mail pickups where the manager preferred. We have eaten here before on trips to Bend and enjoyed it. It's a shame we'll think twice before choosing it again. read more

The food here was delicious - perfectly cooked and seasoned rib eye and sirloin, the baked potatoes simple and cooked thoroughly. The vegetable side was just fair (zucchini, cauliflower, broccoli mix) but hardly mattered, the rest was so delicious. The atmosphere was extremely comfortable and picturesque. The main dining room, with its centerpiece of trees growing through the ceiling, has windows overlooking the river. But a ceiling draft drove us into a darker, cozier, draft-free booth. We had no problem changing our table and the service was professional, politely friendly, and extremely attentive. Highly recommended for a pleasant atmosphere, delicious meal, and quiet ambience. We dined here in April on a Friday night, so may have enjoyed benefits of the "off" season. read more

The food was great but the server was exceptional- I am pretty picky about service as I run a customer service business. The server was personable and friendly- made a few jokes and was just pleasant. Drinks were very good- I had the stroganoff which was very good- I can always enjoy more mushrooms but still plenty and my wife had french onion soup and salad- but she really loved the dessert- bread pudding with a whisky and caramel sauce- she thinks it may have been the best she has ever had. All the prices were reasonable- even the wine list- which did have some pretty nice stuff on it- Silver Oak, Georges de La Tour, Leonetti etc. If you go here, make sure to sit in DJ's section- he was the best. read more

While visiting Bend over the years we have dinned several times here. The overall experience seems to be lacking and the luster of the Pine Tavern from the past is gone. We made a reservations online, arrived earlier and sat in the bar near the entrance. While waiting for our table two other parties arrived specified they did not have reservations and were immediately seated. I assumed they had not specified patio seating so didn't think much about it, until we were finally seated after waiting the 25 minutes for our reservation and the two parties we also seated on the patio. The weather turned cool when the sun went down and we asked about patio heaters the server indicated they had none. Once it became so windy and chilly we asked to be moved inside. When our meal arrived my entree was NOT even what I ordered. The server was nice and provide a complimentary dessert for the error. Overall the food was...meh for the $$$. So sad hoping for the great experiences from years ago!! read more
