Four stars because it's a vegan restaurant in South Bend. It would rank three stars if it were in California anywhere west of the 5. The food is pretty good. This was the location of my most recent birthday dinner, even though I could tell that both Marlene and Tom were skeptical. Tom might still be skeptical, but they both seemed to enjoy their meals. (I don't think that they had ever eaten at an expressly vegan restaurant before.) The service was pretty bad when we came. We were seated right away, and the person who seated us was very nice, but it took them a really long time to take our orders. Part of it was our fault; we were talking about and looking at the menus too long, but they really should have sent someone over to at least ask whether we had any questions. The food came out faster, and the service improved slightly, but in order to get our waters refilled we had to keep flagging down the employee who was sitting there the entire time we were there, with seemingly nothing to do. While refilling the waters, she was smiling and polite. It was a strange disconnect--people were friendly when they were interacting with us, but it was difficult to get them to interact with us. As I drive through the area fairly often, it's become a tradition to stop at Pinellia to get carry-out. The quality of the food can vary a little bit--sometimes it's a bit oily--but it's usually really delicious and *so* much better than trying to find something vegan at a rest area on the turnpike. read more

This place was discovered due to fate. We were planning to go to another establishment in Michigan but the GPS led us to the wrong route which was problematic at first but we later realized that the original place we were going to was closed, so my wife tried to find a vegan restaurant in the Indiana area and we found Pinellia. We were so glad we found this place. Due to COVID-19 we couldn't dine in for sometime and when we came here we thought it would only allow take out, but we were glad on this particular day they allowed dine in. We ordered the Soy Protein in Garlic Sauce, Black Pepper Seitan, Happy Family, which were all excellent, but lemme tell you, the Vegan BBQ Ribs were out of this world! It was amazing both in flavor and texture and it was better than real meat! Very impressed with that dish! This is a family run restaurant and they do a good job with service and the quality and quantity of the food is definitely worth the price. I wish this place was closer to home, but whenever we are in town, we want to hit this place up every chance we get...and you should too! read more

This visit I had the A18 Crispy Soy Protein, A21 King-Oyster Mushrooms, and L18 Vegan BBQ Ribs Lunch. I quite like the Crispy Soy Protein and King-Oyster Mushrooms, and I would get both again! The Crispy Soy Protein tasted like veggie chicken nuggets to me, which was very tasty. I didn't care for the sauce it came with. The King-Oyster Mushrooms were breaded and fried well and were flavorful. Though not as chewy as calamari, it almost reminded me of that. The BBQ Ribs were... okay. Too sweet for me, much like the sauce with the last lunch I had. I'll continue to try things and continue editing this posting as a way to remind myself for future visits what I have already tried! read more

How? How does this place have so many stars? The service was sweet but she was so soft spoken and she mumbles and she was wearing a mask. We kept asking her to repeat what she had just said. The place is kinda dirty. When we first were seated we had to ask them to wipe down our son's seat. hey could really use a remodel. Maybe even just a fresh coat of paint... And the food... I've been to great vegan places. Four and Five star reviews from me but this was not okay. The best thing I had was the miso soup AFTER I added salt. And if you're gonna put ChapJae on your menu, it should taste like ChapJae. They just use the ChapJae noodles and... that's it. I was so disappointed. They do have a bathroom. Again. Needed a good cleaning. And they do have a lot for parking. I suppose if you're in this area and wanted to eat out vegan... I think it's their only option but goodness. read more

Great vegan spot! I've gotten take out several times, but today was my first time dining in. I got the general tso soy protein, and grilled eggplant with a miso glaze. The meal came with both miso soup and rice (with soy beans). I've personally never been a fan of the soup and the rice. The soup is pretty bland for my taste and the rice is well just brown rice. But the sauces they use on their food is amazing!!! I really enjoyed the eggplant and green bean, and today was my first time trying the general tso soy protein and it was delicious! Our group of 4 seniors really enjoyed this food for lunch and we are vegetarian! We had almost the whole place to ourselves. We had general Tao's, ribs, and tempeh with sweet potato. Pinellia is our go-to for a snack after an ND football game, before hitting the road. It's quiet, quick, tasty. Tonight we had a bigger order appetizers, & it took 30 minutes vs. the usual 10 min. The spinach shumai was my favorite hot appetizer, & it used to be gluten-free. I was disappointed to learn that due to a vendor change, it's no longer gluten-free. The other GF hot appetizer is fried tofu, & I found it very bland, greasy. I also ordered pumpkin soup, expecting something puréed, creamier. Instead, it was a light broth with chunks of cooked pumpkin. It was ok, just not what I expected, not as satisfying. Summer rolls would be nicer to eat if the vegetables weren't cut so large, but julienned. The curry samosas are great, & the tofu skins are tasty, crunchy. read more

Pinellia is the latest "hidden gem" in the area, and is a terrific family-owned spot. I wish I had tried it earlier! The family is extremely friendly and there are about six booths and tables. The menu is amazing: I've tried six or seven dishes, and every single item is different and unique, and overflowing with a wide variety of vegetables. Many have plant-based meats. While traveling in Indiana, we found this all Asian vegan restaurant in Google maps and were very pleased with the food we ordered. The place is clean and the staff is very friendly. There are three booths and a small table for dining in. We went for lunch right at 1pm and decided to eat there. The food came out about 10 minutes after ordering. The miso soup was very flavorful, with lots of pieces of tofu and seaweed. My husband ordered the lunch special - L12 Mixed vegetables seitan which comes with a cup of miso soup and a spring roll, but we paid $2 to get a summer roll instead of the spring roll. It was delicious... lots of fresh vegetables and thinly sliced seitan in a light stir fry sauce served with brown rice and soybeans. The summer roll was good with raw white sweet potatoes (not as sweet as other sweet potatoes), carrots, tofu rolled in a thick rice paper with a thick sauce. I ordered N6 Kimchee Yaki Udon and liked it very much. It's spicy and plenty to share. It had lots of noodles, kimchee cabbage and thinly sliced white seitan with a little bit of sliced mushrooms and carrots. The sauce was light, spicy and delicious. When you go to a small town in Indiana (Elkhart for this example), you doubt any vegan food options. Searching Vegan in Google Maps pulled this place right up and to find out that it was 100% vegan had me intrigued. It was only 16 miles away in South Bend, but I had to try it. I looked at the menu only and not the location because I wasn't from there anyway. So, when we pulled up I was like ugh, it's just a small place in a plaza. However, the waitress was super nice and we dined in even though they only had a couple of tables. I wanted to try everything but settled on a couple of soups, appetizers, and entrees each. Got into a desperate situation during Lent when we discovered our favorite middle Eastern had closed. But Pinellia came to the rescue! As the name states, it's vegan Asian but don't fear, meat eaters. Pinellia has delicious dishes. We had the Malaysian curry which was very flavorful and has chicken-like slices of protein. And their sweet potato and broccoli tempura was excellent, not bland as happens so often. The restaurant ambiance would basically be described as strip mall Chinese. Initially, one might not give Pinellia a second thought as it's a small restaurant in a nondescript shopping center with not much else there, but that would be a mistake. My girlfriend is a Carbetarian, in other words, a bad vegetarian and she loved it! We wanted to try a few things, so ordered six different sides and mains (don't worry we didn't eat it all). Spring Rolls ,Dumplings and Samosas are all light and nice. I'd recommend the Dumplings over the Spring Rolls and if you like Curry and Chutney go the Samosas. The King-Oyster Mushrooms are lightly battered and not heavy, not too strong of a mushroom flavor either (one of my favourites). Pad Thai with browned Tofu is not too spicy for me, but my girlfriend thought it could have been less so. Also, there was a good balance noodle to veggies. The clear favorite was the Vegan BBQ Ribs - Delicious! (I believe it's Seitan) This one comes served on a bed of Sautéed Kale. The only knock was the Kale could have been drained more. Pinellia knows as you cautiously enter a vegan restaurant that you may have little faith in the institution of veganism. Veganism has betrayed you countless times, in the guise of well-meaning, repulsively healthy vegan friends with their shiny hair and bright teeth offering you a lump of sad tofu that would rouse even the most forgiving Buddhist nun to anger just to see. Pinellia gracefully erases the history of hurt so that you can begin anew- finally. Pinellia provides a menu, and then a binder of each dish in full-color photo. This simple innovation erased my choice paralysis. It also erased my need to snoop on all the dishes hoisted onto my neighbors' tables. It also eased my diasporic guilt at not recognizing all the dishes and ingredients of my upbringing. The Pinellia tofu wrap is delicious. I found myself filled with anger just biting into it and tasting the mushrooms, because in a world where these wraps exist, how can the abomination of seitan exist? And did we really need to be eating portobello burgers? In this day and age? After the passage of the Geneva Convention against torture? I attacked the kale and shiitake mushrooms. The mushrooms are fried to invoke General Tso's Chicken. They are wonderful. I turned with interest towards my miso soup. It is difficult to mess up miso soup. Here, Pinellia did not stumble. The soup was cloudy and generously dotted with vegetables. Big slimy udon noodles defied my spoon. Everything was as it should be. read more

After 10 days in the road we stopped in South Bend on a Sunday night. Everything was closed and I had big dreams of just finding a meal with a few vegetables. My hopes and dreams were answered and then some. I have a special place in my heart for all vegan establishments. We ordered delivery to our hotel and it arrived in half the time estimated, piping hot. I ordered the black pepper Seitan. It was mildly spiced with big chunks of mushrooms, slices of seitan in brown sauce on a big, generous bed of lightly sautéed, perfectly crunchy greens. I could have easily eaten dinner and had lunch leftovers for the next day due to the big portion, but I just ate it all instead feeling the cruelty free nutrition soar into my soul. I've gone countless times in the past few years and the service is never short of exceptional. The staff is incredibly kind and it's apparent that they truly enjoy what they do. Been visiting during covid for the take-out. It's the only all vegan spot in the area and it's amazing! The pad Thai is phenomenal so is the mei-fun. They have seitan meat soy meat and even vegan shrimps. The king oyster mushrooms and spring rolls are my favorite for a quick lunch though the mushrooms are often too salty. An unusual and in a good way futuristic restaurant, Pinella combines a number of Asian cuisines, Chinese, Thai, and Korean basically, with some Southeast Asian and Japanese, in that order of dominance on their extensive menu. All blessedly vegan from real sources. They use real miso paste, fresh veggies, et al. I found the dishes very good, tasty, substantial. And hardly pricey. Fair by today's standards. A gutsy affair altogether and as you can see from the reviews the locals are loving it. They're on the beaten path but aways down it and rather far from Notre Dame and the airport in a small strip of retail stores. Worth the drive.
