One of the best date night spots in Chicago HAS to be PingPong! We came in last weekend for an early dinner and had the best window seat - sooo perfect for people watching! The service was absolutely phenomenal and every detail of the meal made it feel very luxurious and worth the $$. To drink, we had the Shanghai Jazz (served in the cutest teacup) that was DELICIOUS! and the Bitter Fortune (which was strong, but also very good). We ended up splitting the Drunken Noodles (which were my fav) and the Honey Glazed Chicken! They even included free shrimp chips and chocolate covered fortune cookies with our meal. Honestly this was a wonderful places for a Sunday afternoon brunch. The drinks were delicious, I recommend the Mayan Mai Thai I had. Also my boyfriend's Indochine was delicious. I had the Honey Glazed Chicken which was delicious, I kinda wanted to get an order to go for dinner. My boyfriend had the Dan Dan Noodles which he brought me here specifically to get again. Love that the fortune cookies they bring out are chocolate coated: FREAKING YUM It's not too pricey, a drink and entree came to about $35 a person which is reasonable. I came here for the first time with friends who live in the area and love this place. The atmosphere and vibe is awesome. Yummy cocktails and sake. We ordered the Crab Rangoon and Scallion Pancakes - so good. The edamame is served cold and is so delicious. The Shanghai Noodles are unbelievable! We also had the Pan-Seared Egg Noodles but was not a favorite. At the end they served next level fortune cookies. Came here on a suggestion from a local. The place was decently crowded, but we were able to get a seat outside. The portions are a bit small, I think we were expecting to eat family style but each dish came out in a bowl that is about the right size for one person to eat from (as opposed to a serving dish). The food wasn't all that special, typical Asian food, but there were a lot of different styles offered on the menu. The theme of the restaurant was also very Asian, not sure if that was the intent because we saw some Ping Ping paddles as well which were a bit disjointed. Had a great meal tonight at Ping Pong. It was our first time eating here and we really enjoyed it. The food is a fusion of different Asian cooking styles, including; Chinese, Japanese, Thai and other flavors. We started off with Crispy Spring Rolls and Veggie Dumplings ( which were really a Chinese version of Gyoza. Both were really good, but the Dumplings were absolutely fantastic. Grilled on one side they were crispy, tender and incredibly flavorful. For our main courses we had; Pad Thai, a very ample portion that was delicious. And Spicy Garlic Beef, that was really only mildly spicy, but full on delicious. I was in a heavenly foodgasm over this meal. It's only our second restaurant meal indoors since Covid hit, so I really wanted to have a great meal and this one nailed it! read more

This neighborhood spot is unreal. The ambiance, the drinks, the service, the food - solid 5 stars. I had a watermelon martini to drink, which was soo good and had fresh watermelon. (I've also had a strong lychee martini here previously.) The menu has a ton of variety for food. We went with the crab rangoons, scallion pancakes, Singapore noodles, and pingpong chicken. I've never been a fan of Ping Pong until this recent concept. I've lived in Chicago on the north side for 20+ years and remember when Ping Ping blended in with the other Asian places in Lake View (unimpressive). However, this new(est) rendition harkens back to 1930's Shanghai, from decor, to the menu, to the staff's uniforms. The experience is a bit elevated as is the food (in recipe, offerings and price). We got the tuna tartar, which my hubby loves, to start. It was previously served in a martini glass. Now it's on an authentic (ish) Chinese dish that I would find at my grandmother's dining room. The tuna tartar was still amazingly good. For dinner, we got the honey chili glazed chicken and the basil beef to share. I liked the chicken a bit better than the beef, which I felt was a bit on the salty side. The chicken dish's flavor was good--it had a nice balance between sweet and spicy, and it was not too heavily breaded. There is sidewalk seating, which is wear we dined. It was a hot day, but dining outside was nice as it was shades (building faces east). Service was friendly, good and the food was prompt. We were seated at 740 pm for dinner and immediately ordered one starter and two drinks and they came promptly. At 8 we ordered additional starters and our main. Then we waited. And waited. And waited. At 850, only because we hadn't seen our server I tracked down the host and asked her what the issue was. She tried to dismiss me and promised the food was coming right out. I sat down, set a timer for 5 minutes. It went off. I approached her with cash for our drinks and appetizer.I told her I understood if they were short staffed but we were done waiting. The host argued with me and started saying something about "coursing out the meal" .... But then as we are leaving more plates than can fit at our table start getting placed there. She also said "oh we said pot stickers take 15-20 minutes"... they did at 8 and it was 9 as we left. Could be a bad night but the host never said sorry, demanded more cash than they were due for the little service we had, and then made a huge scene as we left trying to make it seem like it was our fault that we got no service in 80 minutes at her restaurant. The chefs kiss is this was our 17th anniversary dinner and I ordered house of hunan in LP and had my same order in 25 minutes delivered to my door. There are lots of tables, the lighting is nice/dim (could be good for a date!), and the service is great. They bring out these really great shrimp chips to the table before you eat, that are very good. Give em a try if you've never had shrimp chips, or even if you have! The menu is expansive, and there are tons of options. Lots of different types of entrees. Not as many sides, but a good amount of small plates. The salt & pepper calamari was delicious -- might be one of the best-cooked calamari plates I've had in Chicago so far. I also had the steamed fish entree, which was also delicious. It reminded me a lot of the home cooking my mom and grandma used to make. Nice and light and satiating. I liked Ping Pong overall, and would love to come back and try more. read more

Really pleasantly surprised by this place; when it comes to upscale Asian eateries, you can usually see a negative correlation between how nicely decorated it is, and how good the food is. This place, the food as delicious and the design was on point. I wouldn't call it Americanized, but definitely a little more "fusion" than classic, though when done well, there's nothing wrong with combining styles and recipes to come out with a great result. Always loving me some Ping Pong! Have been getting takeout throughout the pandemic and got something new this last time. Loved the veggies in garlic schezwan sauce! Fresh veggies and the sauce was awesome. My dad got the sweet and sour chicken which was a pleasant surprise. Fresh pineapple and red chicken pieces! None of that weird red sauce. We sat out on the patio and it was a perfect summer evening. They allow dogs on the patio but it can get a little cramped with the tables being so close together. We ordered the spicy cucumber salad which had some flavor but not much spice. We both ordered the pad Thai (we never like to share when it comes to our pad Thai)! Really big portions. You could probably share two entrees. Ping Pong gets pretty busy on the weekends but the food seems to come out fairly quickly. read more

This review is not about the food. Very very disappointed in this restaurant. Been coming here and supporting Henry since day one. We were told 45 minute wait which turned into 90 minutes. Then we ordered wine and ordered food to go and they said 10 minutes which turned into 20 minutes and I asked for a top off of wine which the hostess said Henry would not allow. So bottom line flew in from San Francisco to meet friends who often come here to enjoy a nice meal and I cannot recommend this place anymore. We loved the warm and friendly ambiance of this small and busy restaurant. I was glad we could do a walk-in and were immediately seated for our party of six. The veggie sushi was amazing, as well as the vegetarian noodles and curries. The dumplings were delicious! We also enjoyed a variety of interesting alcoholic beverages (including alcoholic chai). This was my first time trying Asian cocktails, and I was very impressed. All desserts tasted great, especially their specialty tea cake. The only downside was that service was pretty slow that Wednesday evening, (considering how crowded the restaurant was). Prices also seemed pretty reasonable. We lucked up and got a table outside, (what we wanted!) which was super nice and spacious. I ordered the egg drop soup for my appetizer and split the crab rangoons with a friend. I would recommend the rangoons to share (comes with 4.)! The egg drop soup was good, but definitely not the best I have had. Ping pong is BYOB, with a $5 cork fee. Note: they only allow BYOB inside the restaurant and not on the patio. For my appetizer, I had the bulgogi, which came with rice (white, brown, or quinoa). I opted into the white rice. The sauce on the bulgogi / overall flavor was SO good. I would definitely get this again from Ping Pong. The shrimp fried rice (tasted a friend's) was also very good. I would definitely consider this as well if you're unsure what to order. Ping pong does have street parking. My friend lucked up with a spot right in front. The drinks were also very good! Considering the prices at Ping Pong I was expecting larger portions, or to be blown away by flavor and quality. Neither was the case. The food was as good as Yummy Yummy down the street, but twice the price. $20 for orange chicken is offensive. It's essentially a fried chicken breast cubed and sauced. The portion wasn't even enough to have leftovers. Maybe the dine in experience helps justify the prices, but if you're looking for delivery find another option. read more

I am obsessed with this place. It's less than a 3 minute walk from my apartment and has amazing food. Perfect for friends or a date, their lettuce wraps and ginger martinis are incredible. Our server was Erica who is attentive and has excellent service. The staff is efficient and is consistently asking you if you have everything you need and refilling your water. Though a little pricier than your typical restaurant, it's definitely worth every bite. To finish your meal off, they also bring you chocolate covered fortune cookies.
