I was very impressed with how generous the happy hour menu is - affordable margaritas, guacamole and tacos - and not just your average slimmer green sour mix margarita - FOUR different margarita options to choose from! Naturally, I wanted to try all four (but ended up only trying three). The Mango Margarita was #1 for me, sweet but not too sweet and beautifully served with a spice dipped lime slice. I called this afternoon and asked if they could accommodate a party of 8 at 5:30 pm. My friends went there last week and it was empty. They didn't do online reservations which is why I called to give a heads up. The manager on the phone said they could accommodate us at the high top, I said cool. When we got there it was completely empty. The high top table looked super uncomfortable with tiny bar stools. So we sat at the back table. The waiter asked us to move because investors were coming. I asked what time, and he said they didn't know. I made a comment about the investors wanting customers to be happy. So we moved to the side, after we got situated the manager lady came out and asked us if I called earlier because we agreed on the high top. I said yes, but there is literally no one in here can we sit here? She said well we agreed I'm sorry I didn't realize we signed a contract about our table in an empty restaurant. What if I we walked in, would you have said the same thing? When I said ok, we'll leave if we can't sit here. And she didn't care. You lost a $1000 tab tonight with the 8 of us. Pink Cactus Mexican Restaurant has been in my list for a while and I finally got to experience all it had to offer the other day. It is located on Spring Street right across the street from Cannon Green. A parking area to the rear of the restaurant is helpful. They have an outdoor patio with heat lamps and plenty of beautiful cacti. Once you step inside you get that wow factor. It's cozy intimate and the aroma to die for. The bar is very well stocked with staff who are both knowledgeable and very chatty. The overall experience was very nice. The food is not your cheap Mexican food, it's an upscale version of Mexican fare with an Oaxacatan influence. The dishes I had from the appetizer menu were delicious and very flavorful. The presentation flawless. I loved the whole experience here. It's definitely an upscale take on the typical Mexican food found in many of the local establishments. So if you want to broaden your horizons definitely check this place out. Currently they are incorporating Restaurant Week!! read more

Just had lunch at Pink Cactus. Have been there before and it never fails to delight. We had the queso fundido which is spectacular. The tacos (we had pork and chicken) are the best I have had in Charleston. She serves the tacos with tortillas on the side and the portions are really enough to make way more than 3 servings. Two of us could not finish the plate we shared. The salsas are also to die for! We went to Rancho Lewis last week and it was good but not as good as Pink Cactus. I have never encountered rude staff here. They do have parking in back of the restaurant but it is a small lot as you would expect downtown. read more

It was like going in a place that didn't want you there or even care if you were there at all. The food was like a high person developed the menu with no culinary background. A dark environment usually says the establishment is dirty, but I couldn't tell because it was so dark, also, we couldn't read the menus. Like I said, everything about this place is different for the wrong reasons. Our drinks took 30 minutes and the bartender wasn't busy... he might have been the cook too. I ordered a rice bowl (ingredients were rice, beans, onion and guacamole)-- only to be told they didn't in fact have rice or beans. We were also charged extra for chips without being told. My friend was also told she couldn't have the sour cream put on the side; if she didn't want it, she would have to tell them she had a dairy allergy which meant she also couldn't get cheese because they can do "modifications." I read about Pink Cactus it in the City Paper and they talking it up. So I wanted to give it a try. When I first walked in it was empty at 12:30 on a Saturday. The place was small and maybe had 10 tables on the inside. When we sat down we were served and after they took our order we were not talked to until we got our food. Turns out they gave us the wrong menu... We were given a smaller menu and initially confused why the menu was so small. There were about 15 food items on it. Prices were a little steep but we were told that everything was brought fresh and some ingredients from Mexico. We ordered what we thought were $5 tacos. Steep for a taco. Even steeper if you saw the size of the taco. The food came out and the tacos were TINY. They had fresh ingredients and tasted good but the portions were next to nothing. I left the restaurant hungry at the end. After being served food we waited about 30 minutes until we were asked if we needed checks. Once we got our checks, we noticed that the prices were higher than on the menu... we questioned why our tacos now said $7 each instead of $5. The server said they were from a Cinco de Mayo special two weeks ago and they never noticed we were given them. My cauliflower taco was advertised as a special on Cinco de Mayo as $5 but in reality it was $4. Who increases prices for a special!? We questioned our server why our prices were high and they said it was a mistake. The price on the incorrect menu we were given was never honored to us. The manager or the server did not say a word about the mistake. As if the customer doesn't matter... I will not return nor recommend it to anyone. I lived in Mexico City for years so I'l admit I'm a bit of a snob when it comes to Mexican food and agave spirits. So when I eat Mexican food in the US, it tends to taste the same as all the other US Mexican restaurants. My disappointment is not so much in the quality of the ingredients in US Mexican restaurants, but in the authentic flavors that are missing in the food. But I can't say that about Pink (Cactus) with its Oaxacan in style offerings (Oaxacan is probably the best of all Mexican food in my opinion). Anyway, if you're craving really authentic, regional style Mexican food, you'll be very happy eating here. The salsas are fresh and flavorful, the meat/chicken/seafood is quality, the tortilla's are freshly made and the selection of Mezcal & Tequila at the cozy bar is smart, yet reasonably priced... and their unique cocktails will put a smile on your face. Disappointing. We went for the taco & tequila hour that is from 4-6pm. We got there at like 5:40... plenty of time to place our orders on the happy hour menu. There was one waitress working during this time. She was obviously very busy. She brought us chips and salsa and then she wasn't able to get to our table again until 5:57.. and she told us she couldn't honor the happy hour price anymore because the kitchen might make it after 6pm. Guess we should've flagged her down well before 6pm? Then I ordered a taco... $7 for a 3" taco that has like 1 tablespoon of shrimp... it's a lot cuter in pictures than the vibe is. I ventured to this place with a group of friends for a happy hour. We initially wanted to sit outside but the rain was rolling in so we opted to sit inside. We were seated inside and learned that the happy hour is only served at the bar so we asked to move there. This was met with many eye rolls and glances between the waitress and bartender. While they were pleasant on the surface, it was a seemingly small thing to move with a completely empty restaurant. The entire group ordered the pink cactus margarita. It looked beautiful but tasted like a regular margarita. The guacamole was delicious though! I was curious about their food but our service was so unwelcoming that we opted to continue our happy hour gathering elsewhere. Anyways, I am constantly attempting to make my DNA 10% chips and salsa, so now I have another option for that mission. Obviously understaffed and you could tell our waitress was stressed out. She was avoiding eye contact with us or checking with us because she was busy dealing with other angry tables. Our pink cactus margaritas looked nothing like the photos we saw online and tasted like straight tequila. We had to send them back and ask for a refund. The appetizer trio with chips salsa and guac was good, but we asked twice for more chips and did not get any. The food was edible but not a saving grace. The beans were the most flavorful thing on the plate, rice was bland, and chicken tacos were dry. I feel like on a week night it might be a different story but I don't recommend this for large groups or on a busy night. Atmosphere was cute but we were very disappointed. I was pleasantly surprised with this new taco place that opened up right down the street. To be honest I've heard some mixed reviews but now that I've tried it I am happy and will definitely be back. We ordered the guac which came with toasted corn tortillas which was very unique but so tasty! I also tried a beef taco which I believe had a pineapple salsa on top and a pork taco which had some onions and herbs both of which were delicious! Everything was ordered a la carte so you could pick and choose what you wanted. There were also multiple different salsas that were an option so I will have to go back and try those. My family descended on Chuck to celebrate my Mother's 65th birthday. We arranged with Brooke for our 10 top to be seated at their community table. Normally they don't take resos but Brooke told us she'd have the table ready for us if we came in earlier. The service staff were super friendly and knowledgeable about the ingredients and portion size for our large group. My fiancé is from Mexico and was really brought home with the flavors. Just a few highlights the house made tortillas are amazing, the mole was intoxicating and the tacos were perfect... if you're looking for giant chimichangas with sides of refried beans and rice go to a tex mex joint. This place is legit Mexican food sourcing local and Mexican ingredients. Just the fact they take the time to make their own masa in house is rare. By the end of our night it was like everyone was apart of the birthday party, we all had cake, the chef came out to chat with all of us. It was a true dining experience. They even provided a cake cutter and stored the cake we brought until we were ready. read more

We finished our meals at about 02:15 and no other customers came in to the restaurant. However, patrons inside finished up their meal and left. I'm not sure why they couldn't have moved us inside. Maybe we were there on an off night but it's hard to believe that so much about this restaurant could be counter to the fairly high average rating that is shown here. When we complained about the food, particularly the inedible (hard, crunchy rice) the server agreed with us that it was probably the end of the night and they were "scrapping from the bottom of the pan". What kind of attitude is that? We're from California and have grown up on Mexican food, including moles. This is not good food. We came from out of town for a bachelorette & this was our first dinner in Charleston & was a big disappointment :( cute location & I honestly really liked the food but the service was 0/10. Half of us work in the service industry and tried to be patient and understanding but we basically didn't have a server the entire time. Fantastic! Easily the best Mexican I've had in quite a while. The spice level was perfect. The portions were very nice, not "generous," but plenty for dinner.
