This is my go to when I want a pizza now. The crust is thin but not crunchy which is good because a lot of thin crust feels like your eating a cookie. My co-worker told me about this place so we came here for happy hour. The wine was $5 a glass which is pretty decent. I order the house red wine. It was so good! The pizza is delicious. You can't go wrong with good wine and good pizza. The atmosphere is very laid back and relaxing. I love the location, midtown. It's really close to the rail line, which is my transportation to work. I would definitely recommend this place for a happy hour or date night outing. The wait staff was very attentive and gave us great suggestions regarding the food choices. I had such high expectations!!! Especially for the all you can eat gnocchi on the 29th of every month. Unfortunately, there is no 29 in February, so we just went for dinner. We got the: Linosa (avocado + shrimp) (2/5): for some reason I expected this to be a salad-ish dish. Tossed in olive oil or something with chunks of avocado. The plate came out with 6 shrimp cut in half (laid out) + 6 thin slices of avocado....covered in (thousand island like dressing, haha WHAT?) Gnocchi in cheese sauce (2/5): the sauce was bland...yet cheesy. How is that possible, i love cheese and the menu description made is sound amazing (three? four types of cheese melted together?). I mean the dish came out in 10 minutes it was probably pre-made and heated up. To be fair, we were one of the three tables in the restaurant. Overall, maybe i should've tried the pizza. Deeply disappointed in Piola Midtown management. I placed an order over the phone and paid at the same time and even added a generous gratuity. The employee didn't provide a total , but we placed frequent to go orders so I did not ask to check. The employee misheard "side" for "five" orders of an item, and when we returned home we saw the error. The manager was cold and would not correct, except for a free dessert next time we go. The Piola on Voss is much more warm and accommodating, and understands the value in customer service. Lesson learned. read more

One of our go-to pizza places in Houston. We've ordered delivery through a 3rd party site multiple times, and we've eaten at the restaurant (pre-covid), and they've been all around consistent and delicious. I especially appreciate that they offer easy-to-follow reheating instructions right on the delivery box to maximize flavor and enjoyment. Their garlic knots are tasty and come with a big old bowl of warm marinara sauce. They have delicious tiramisu as well. I prefer their burrata pizza over their margherita, as this most recent time I found the marg was a tad too salty for my taste. We've enjoyed their gnocchi also. All in all a delicious casual cafe-like restaurant with great food to be enjoyed for delivery and in-house dining. read more

We visited Piola Midtown during our vacation to Houston. I ordered the calzone, and my spouse ordered a Caesar salad. We also ordered cheesy bread as an appetizer. The bread and calzone were delicious. We were seated right away on a Thursday night. Our server was friendly, but the restaurant appeared short staffed on servers. In fact, I think he might have been the only one for the restaurant. There appeared to be food runners and a manager that were assisting. Overall, we enjoyed the food and our server. read more

I have come here many times and the service is always pretty subpar. The wait staff is definitely stuck up for sure. I usually come for lunch and get the Caesar Salad which I love and the big slices of cheese are my favorite. I also get the gnocchi which is my absolute favorite here! if I could give this place 0 starts i would. service here was absolutely terrible our waitress was incredibly rude and never checked on us, after she gave us our food. we had to ask multiple other waiters for parm and salt. even had to ask the manager for to go boxes he did not care that no one was helping us. Our waitress came back and we asked for our checks, she never came back w them we had to go to the bar to ask for our checks. The waitress then came and decided to tell us we were the worst customers she's had and the manager did not care one bit. he said the they are so busy (which they were not) and were very stressed.... which does not excuse anything. the food was not even that good, tastes like cicis pasta. horrible experience, with the way they treat customers I hope this place shuts down. I LOVE this place. I moved in an apartment a block away about three weeks ago and I've already been three times! First time we stumbled upon it while walking somewhere trying to find Sunday brunch. They didn't have a brunch menu but the regular menu looked great so we decided on it mostly to get out of the heat. So glad we stopped there! We were thrilled to be told that they had mimosa and Bellini carafes for $10 each on Sundays. I think we went through four. The bellinis are outstanding. The pizza is divine; crust and ingredients were on point for everyone. The pasta was great too and had a very authentic taste. Our server was an angel. Both times we've been for brunch he'd served us and he was incredibly polite and attentive even when we were a tiny bit rowdy from the bellinis. I highly recommend this spot! read more

Overview: Pizza selection is massive and tantalizing. I feel the prices are over-inflated because they use ingredients you won't find in a lot of other pizza places. The pizza I ordered, the 'Rio de Janeiro', was bland and had a Brazilian 'cream cheese' on it that a strange texture on a pizza. My favorite part of the experience -- I asked the food runner for a side of extra marinara, to which she looked super confused. My group of friends and I came here for their happy hour. They were able to accommodate a big group and rearrange the table. On the night that I went, they had mini sample appetizers they serve in the front so that was a plus. Of course, everything is better when food and drinks are discounted. I had a hard time giving this place a star ranking. I was debating between a 2 and a 3. On one hand, the pizza truely is Italian style. The bread is made in-house and really good. The ingredients were equally as good and everything was well made. Ask for the oil chilli sauce that they have as a substitute for red pepper. It was pretty good as well. We tried a dessert and the ice cream and chocolate were rich and tasty. On the other hand... Now, for the the suck. RA Sushi, meet your Italian cousin. This place is trying to be more of a club than a restaurant. When I go out to eat I just want to enjoy my food and company. I don't want to have to yell over some crappy Techno song or remix. The lights above seemed like those stupid red globes that RA sushi has. This is just going to turn into a place where nobody knows why they are there because of the crappy experience, but they are just going so they can be seen there. This is really unfortunate because the food was actually some of the better Italian style pizza I've had. Just the thought of having authentic Neapolitan pizza was enough to make me rush to Piola as soon as I found out it was in the neighborhood. While I wouldn't expect a pizza joint in Houston to be an exact replica of a mom-and-pop pizzeria in Naples, I'd still expect something a bit better for what turned out to be a $60 lunch for two. Here's the breakdown of yesterday's visit: Wine--Not a bad selection, and it's not overly priced. However, the red wine had been chilled. Refrigerated. Oh hell no! Who would do that to good red wine? Appetizer--We ordered the caprese salad with buffalo mozzarella. What we got was more like a do-it-yourself caprese kit. We received a plate with a ball of mozzarella in the center. It was surrounded by a few slices of plain tomato and four small basil leaves. Then, were given bottles of olive oil and balsamic vinegar on the side. Good caprese should set for a while, at room temperature, to let the flavors meld. While the mozzarella was great, the salad had almost no flavor. Pizza--While the crust was the perfect texture, it simply had no flavor. Perhaps it needed a bit more olive oil and at least some salt. Surprisingly, the pizzas we ordered were not hot or even moderately warm when they reached our table. This seems a bit odd for something that had just been inside a 1000-degree oven. Still, the sauce was just missing something, perhaps salt or Parmesan. While real Neapolitan pizza isn't loaded with ingredients like pizza from other places, it still has flavor. This was simply bland. I had the Margherita Regina with fresh basil. They must have been running low on basil. I got only three tiny leaves on the whole pizza. Was the pizza bad? Not even! It was just missing flavor and heat. Service--The guy working at the door looked like he wasn't having a very good day, and that he'd rather be deep in hell than at the door of the restaurant. I can't say that I'd feel any different. Still, he got us seated quickly, as the place wasn't very busy when we came in. However, our server was SUPERB. I don't know her name because I don't think anyone there wore name tags. Even though she was dealing with tables scattered around the dining area, and we were on the patio, she was very friendly, attentive, and helpful. Her level of service got her a good tip, and it's the reason why I'm giving Piola three stars instead of two. Do I foresee myself craving Piola's food anytime soon? Probably not. However, I wouldn't be too surprised if I were to end up there again someday. read more

Not gonna lie...when I want to try out a new resto in town I make sure that they have good drinks just in case the food ends up to be a downer. So when someone on Yelp mentioned that they serve Caipiroska's here, I was intrigued! I've had my fair share of Caipirinhas but a Caipiroska? When I asked the bartender what the difference was between the two drinks, she said that the 'Roska is made of vodka instead of cachaca (which is the main alcohol in a caipirinha). She had me at vodka. And so I sat at the bar and ordered a Kiwi Caipiroska. The few times that I'll ever willingly eat a fruit is if it's a drink. How lucky was I to find my favorite fruit mixed with alcohol on the menu! I also ordered their Rimini pizza (ricotta w/ smoked salmon). Though the salmon portions were large (four pieces), the salmon to slice of pizza (w/ only ricotta) ratio tasted somewhat disproportionate. I would've been happier if each slice got a piece of smoked salmon but it's a minor issue. Overall, I was happy with my food, even happier with my drink, and tipped the poor, overworked, bartender well. Apparently, she was the ONLY bartender that night for bar and table service and though stressed, she managed it well. Will definitely be back for more! read more

I LOVE FREE STUFF! And in this economy, you've gotta take what you can get! Piola is a great little cozy place on the edge of Midtown that I've come to love. They offer some authentic Italian dishes, along with a plethora of tasty pizzas. I enjoy coming here for Happy Hour, mostly because they have FREE appetizers at the bar. The last time I was in, the manager was trying out some new pizzas and came out offering up samples of the new concoctions and boy, where they good! I love their thin crust styling and the toppings are always so fresh. We ordered a medium to split along with the FREE stuff and my friend ended up taking the leftovers home. A lot of people in the area stop in to pick up pizzas to-go, so it seems to be a hit among the neighborhood. The bartenders are super friendly and very informative about the specialty drinks they offer. The also have beers and wine, but I really enjoyed the cocktails because they are made with fresh berries. So, if you haven't tried it, then I would get there fast...specifically between 5-7pm, Monday through Friday for FREE apps! read more

Family was at Escape Room and this place was close to grab lunch. There were 10 of us and we had a plenty of room. The waiter was kinda short with us but as we interacted more he was great. We all enjoyed our food. The pepperoni was a little spicy on the pizza but it was good. I really liked the thin crust. Visit Piola on the 29th of the Month! Actually, visit Piola anytime, but the 29th is a special day (more on that later). This restaurant is colorful, chic, cozy place that is great for single diners at the bar, couples at the tables, and even good sized groups if you plan ahead. It's located under the 24 Hour Fitness complex in Midtown just off Elgin along the oak lined Louisiana. There's a nice little patio outside on the sidewalk. If they don't give it to you, make sure to ask for some complimentary bread with herbed olive oil while you figure out what to eat. I recommend a nice starter like a Caprese salad to share with a friend. Everyone loves the different salads, but I like saving space for the main course. And for that, go for any one of their excellent Neapolitan style pizzas. The crust, sauce, cheese and fresh toppings are first rate. Or, try their pastas which are perfectly cooked and delicious. And I don't hesitate to recommend any of the different sauce choices, but the cream-based ones are my favs like the broccoli, mushroom or the prosciutto. And finally back to the 29th. There's a story of the Lucky Gnocchi served to a traveler who left good fortune to a family. In that tradition, All You Can Eat Gnocchi is served on the 29th of the month. There are at least nine different sauces served on this soft, potato-based pasta. It's a great introductory way to learn about how they all taste. Service could be a tighter, but it is certainly friendly. With the tables full, it can be loud and not the best for an intimate date. Despite being part of a franchise chain, you will enjoy this well run and well executed restaurant. My Tip: Visit during Happy Hour to get a great sampling of their good food. read more

Last month (on July 29 to be exact), I met up with a few lady friends for dinner. I arrived heinously early because I still can't appropriately gauge Houston traffic, so I parked myself at the bar where I enjoyed a glass of rosé and some complimentary bread sticks. The rosé was light and refreshing, and the bread sticks were a welcoming little nosh. They also handed me a free, fragrent, juicy bruschetta appetizer, which I'm never gonna pass up. Wait, I SEE WHAT YOU'RE DOING HERE PIOLA. Must. save. room. for gnocchi. Apparently it is an Italian tradition to eat gnocchi on the 29th of the month for good luck. So on the 29th of every month, Piola has unlimited gnocchi night, where you can eat as much gnocchi as you want (in 10 different sauces!) for around $15. If that doesn't get you through the summer, I don't know what will! To make it healthy (let me dream.), I ordered the Aristotele side salad to start. Mixed greens are combined with goat cheese, cherry tomatoes, black pitted olives, cucumbers, and a red wine vinaigrette. It was light and enjoyable, though nothing cutting-edge or earth-shattering in the world of salads. But definitely a nice starter salad. Okay, now onto the reason we are all here. I believe in total I tried 5 of the 10 different gnocchis that made their way to our table, due to eating only the vegetarian offerings. The four cheese gnocchi was creamy, naughty, and indulgent. This was my second favorite of the five. Then I had 2 or 3 different tomato-based gnocchis (one basil tomato, one garlic tomato, and possibly one other that was just a regular marinara), which were fine, but not as exciting. My favorite of the five though, was the pesto gnocchi. Oh wo/man. The herby pesto was smooth, incredibly garlicky, and wonderful. If I go back to gnocchi night (please, if?) I may just have the pesto gnocchi all night, I loved it so much! The gnocchi dumplings (dumplings? dough-balls? help.) in all of the dishes were soft and doughy, but not at all undercooked. While the gnocchi wasn't the best gnocchi in the world, for a $15 unlimited supply, and for gnocchi that's being made for the masses, they were pretty darn good. (And full disclosure, the best gnocchi in the world is served from from a tiny castle above the town of Conegliano, Italy, which is easily the most quaint, picturesque place on planet earth, and the gnocchi there is PUMPKIN GNOCCHI, so.) The entire meal was lovely. From the welcoming service, to the delicious and affordable food, to the fun, vibrant environment, Piola has a great thing going. Stopped by with a friend last Tuesday on her recommendation (hi Nicole G!!) and I'm glad I did. Since Jinya is right next door, I've never given Piola much thought in the past, but that's my mistake. We came for happy hour and drink prices were reasonable, $5 for a glass of wine and $4 for beers I believe. They also have daily specials and I believe Tuesday was ladies' night (although I don't remember what that entails.......) but we were just there too early for it. We split the Pompei (spicy salami, mozzarella, and oregano) with extra basil on top and it was honestly more than enough food for the two of us. The pizza was full of flavor and the crust was a little thinner than I would have liked, but still held up decently against the ingredients. Service was on point as well, although the restaurant was fairly empty when we arrived around 6, we sat at the bar and the bartender took good care of us without being too hover-y. They also passed around free food samples to the folks sitting at the bar - penne, bruschetta, etc. so if you can swing a seat at the bar, do it!! Only real drawback is that because it's in the same building as Jinya, 24 Hour Fitness, etc., good luck finding parking. I managed to find a spot in a far corner on the top floor of the garage (which took me a 57 point turn to back out of) but the usual Midtown street parking (as much as I hate it) is also available. read more
