I ordered the fried tilapia with jollof rice and plantains, and I was pleasantly surprised... actually, thoroughly impressed. From the moment the food came out, everything looked and smelled incredible. They even brought out complimentary fried bread with a tomato dipping sauce, which was such a nice touch. The tilapia was seasoned perfectly and cooked just right--crispy on the outside, tender on the inside, and no fishy smell at all. You can tell it was prepared with real care. The jollof rice was flavorful, rich, and moist with a delicious tomato base, and the plantains were the perfect balance of sweet. What really stood out to me was how well-balanced everything was. The sauces paired beautifully with the fish, and every bite just worked. I was so impressed that I asked to meet the chef just to personally thank her. You can truly taste the love in the food. I'll definitely be coming back--and next time, I'm bringing family and friends!

Such amazing food, service, and the owner is so friendly!!…read more Stopped by on a Saturday for late lunch. Got the fried red snapper + plantains + Jollof rice. While I was waiting, the owner came out with a complimentary app for me to snack on (fried cassava (??) balls w a tangy sweet/salty sauce). Ooooohweee the fish was so tasty, crispy, and well-seasoned I literally cleaned the fish to the bone (it did not die in vain). Texture was great, very fresh. Red snapper was an up charge, but even though I didn't try the tilapia, I think it was worth. Plantains and Jollof rice were fantastic as well. Owner was so nice, came to check in a couple times, and applauded my appetite. Will be back to try to fufu! And get that delicious snapper again!!

Reading all of the reviews here and maybe I just caught them on an off night, idk…read more.. First things first, it was hot in the restaurant, potentially the A/C was not working as well as it should have been or something, but it was not super comfortable. The service was good, I didn't get her name, a younger woman waited on me and she was very kind and did the best she could. The food came out super slow, I ordered empanadas to start, the waitress said they burned the first order (I appreciated that didn't just serve me overdone empanadas lol) once they finally arrived they were just unfortunately bland, and just kind of lacked authenticity. When she finally brought out my main dish, she even apologized for the wait and said "I had to go yell at them". For a main entree I ordered the French dip with onion rings, another reviewer mentioned they were the best they had had. The meat was kind of tough and dry (which is odd for a French Dip, and everything just lacked flavor. Even the au jus really had no kind of salt or much flavor to it. I really hoped after seeing how everyone else rated this place that I had found that little hole in the wall spot putting out killer food that we all long for, sadly this wasn't it.

Looking for authentic hot pot? Look no further!…read more As a California native I am very very picky about my Asian food. I found this place to be a pleasant surprise! The hot pot is flavorful, delicious, and fulfilling. I went home with a second meal because the portions are so good. I also recommend the basil popcorn chicken, they do a really good job of seasoning not on the chicken but the breading as well. Do not skip over this local gem!

I've been wanting to try this place ever since they opened and I left today a bit disappointed…read more I ordered the wagyu brisket mini-hotpot-for-one and a Thai fried rice. The hotpot was a bit bland and I had to add quite a bit of soy sauce to taste anything as I went with the Szechuan broth. The fishball with roe had a really off putting taste to it either it was old or a different brand used because they are typically quite good. This is the first time where I was unable to eat it due to the flavor and texture. Traditionally hotpot is served with a side of dipping sauce to accommodate with the proteins/veggies. Since there wasn't any, the only option was soy sauce lol... Overall quite bland and pricey for what you get compared to other places. The Thai fried rice was interesting. I wasn't sure what was "Thai" about it because it tasted like a typical fried rice. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't great. It had good flavor compared to the bland hotpot. At the time of my visit it was pretty empty and no one checked on us the entirety of the meal and I had to stand up to try and find a server to check out. Maybe the entryway blocks the view of the servers? Idk. The silverware was also dirty. Asked for a new spoon and there was a small food but stuck on it alongside my plate having some oil on it. I dont see myself coming back here but I do wish them the best. Theres not a lot of asian businesses in East Mesa, especially ones that offer hotpot.

The food is always solid with a wide variety of options--there's something for just about everyone on the menu, and everything we've tried has been well-prepared and enjoyable. What really stands out, though, is the staff and overall hospitality. We've even gone with our kids, which can sometimes be a challenging dining experience, but they've always been incredibly friendly, patient, and helpful. They go out of their way to make us feel welcome, which makes a big difference. Overall, Union Grill and Tap is a dependable local favorite with great food, a fun atmosphere, and genuinely welcoming service. Highly recommend for families, friends, or game day gatherings.

The only that was a bummer is their fish and chips is panko crusted and not battered. I love fish and chips with the traditional batter, and don't feel like panko is a good match for the white fish. I got the mushroom Swiss burger but swapped it for a chicken breast. I really enjoyed it and appreciate the ability to swap the red meat for something lighter. Fries were good too! They have some good stuff on the menu and will be back to get another experience under my belt.
