I like the falafel sandwiches with the salad bar, making Pitopia one of the very, very few options that passes as "healthy" in the nabe. Today just went in a snack so thought I'd try the fries. Not healthy, I know - but I eat fries so rarely - shouldn't kill me. These might- these fries are grease buckets! You get a soggy mass saturated in oil - what the heck? Turn up the temp on your fryer! These are disgusting! Tossed them and kept the amba sauce.... After experiencing how they cook their fries I probably won't go back again for the falafel. read more

Well, this took like forever to happen. They had announced the new location roughly 5 months ago, and had started construction about then as well, with countless opening dates having come and passed between then and now. Regularly, my friends emailed a fellow named "Kevin" for updates and we would constantly be saddened by the reports, figuring it would never open. It eventually got to the point where a large group of us would regularly dedicate Facebook updates to how bad this imaginary character we had created to imagine Kevin actually was. Again, for what felt like the millionth time, last week we were told they would be opening this week, and we had resigned ourselves to the fact that we were merely Sisyphus, constantly pushing the boulder of hope and expectation up a mountain, with no actual opening date or goal happening. But then, the reports were true! We got an email about them opening with specials running for the opening day only! The opening day of Sunday, 5-9-14! Wait. That date doesn't exist... Could this be another hoax?! But no, they just don't know how to use a calendar. The reign of Pitopia 2: Electric Bugaloo was upon us! I had been to the original location many times, but generally found it on the good side of average. It wasn't bad, just nothing to write home (or to Yelp) about, so I wasn't expecting the sequel to be particularly better, but hey, it's next door to my office and new, so I decided I would try it out. This location just aesthetically looked much nicer, with a bit of a hip, trendy feel, as opposed to the squished, fast food nature of the original. I went with a couple of friends, and we were simply wowed by certain things listed on the menu. Shawafel (Shawarma+Falafel)? Shnifel (Shnitzel + Falafel)? Hetzi-Hetzi (Shwarma+Schnitzel)? What is this sorcery?! I finally decided to get a Shawafel to stuff into my fat face (But I got whole wheat pita, because yeah, I like to delude myself into thinking food fried in oil is remotely healthy. Oh and I got pickles. That's basically a cucumber, so I can now pat myself on the back for living a healthy lifestyle.), and it was fantastic. The Shawarma at the original place is very... edible. But the Shawarma here was actually very solid. The sandwich was awesome though, and I hope to get it again, along with trying some of the other experiments, and the regular classics. My friend got the Hetzi-Hetzi, and he loved it as well. They gave him fries on the side, and I bummed a couple off of him (Potatoes grow from the ground, right? Eatin' my veggies!), and they were very crispy and tasteful, with very fresh ribbed edges. The food was great, and the prices were very fair for Midtown. We even got to meet Kevin and he seemed like an okay dude, and wasn't even particularly weirded out that we gave him pseudo-celebrity status. I've been here twice now, because sometimes I crave hummus and as far as I can tell, this place is closest to my job. The hummus and toppings are bland and flavorless. But I've never finished a whole plate, so I guess it's a lot of food for $8. I think the owner plays games because once he told me my card was declined and that I had to pay cash, but nothing was wrong with my card (had money, no messed up strip). This place is a block away from where I work and it's convenient to come here and grab a good falafel sandwich. They have many to choose from and there is a large selection of toppings you can put on your falafel sandwich if you like. I always get the American falafel sandwich. It is very basic because it only has lettuce and hummus on it, but I don't like a lot of things on my falafel sandwiches. They also have a variety of different sauces too. The place is a bit small and seating is limited. It can be a little tricky to maneuver around the place and choose toppings to put on your falafel sandwich, which is a bit annoying. They have a sink in the middle of the restaurant where you can wash your hands, which is nice! Overall, a good falafel sandwich here if you're looking to grab and go. read more

8 year old boy takes our order, I get a $13 schnitzel platter which apparently to these people mean high school cafeteria chicken strips. 3 pieces! Not massive dinner course chicken strips but the size you get from a small bag in the frozen section of the grocery store. Certainly far from the "platter" the name suggests. They dip them in the sauce you want (classy) and serve it on fries. Oh, the honey BBQ sauce is Heinz ketchup-like BBQ sauce served around the nation at school cafeterias from gross tubs. Walked in, stood at the register for 5 or 6 minutes without anyone saying a single word to me. They may have been understaffed, but the lady behind the counter could have at least looked in my direction to say hello or acknowledge that I was waiting. I'm typically very patient and would have happily waited a bit longer had a simple, common acknowledgement been issued. A manager type walked in and was unloading supplies, and once again, said nothing until I asked him if they were closed (knowing the answer was no). After a short answer of no from him, I waited for a few more seconds before say that it's OK, I'll just leave because I feel unwelcome. Horrible customer service and horrible first impression. there are better pita places in the city...it was okay but idk like the yelp description of a two star rating says "meh I've experienced better." it's a self-serve side dish bar and I didn't try it because idk self-serve buffet things weird me out with contamination and stuff. I got a falafel and Schnitzel The falafel was cold and seemed like it was fried that morning...hard, hard to cut with a knife let alone eat it in a sandwich like it should be eaten. The chicken schnitzel was soggy and a very tiny piece of chicken. For $11 you would expect a decent piece but instead got barely anything. Overpriced and poor quality food. Even with a Groupon, this place put a frown on my face. :( Before purchasing the Groupon, I looked at their website and saw words like "fresh" and "healthy." Plus, we love falafel, and the online menu looked good. So we went for it. The verdict: It was neither fresh nor healthy. The man up front was friendly, so that was redeeming. I was originally going to say the whole place was really dirty, but about half an hour after we arrived, someone started cleaning. I hope they got into all the nooks and crannies. The floor, corners, and countertops really needed a thorough scrubdown. The falafel actually was tasty, but it went downhill from there. I got a "salad" box which means they set the falafel on top of a few pieces of iceberg lettuce. Maybe they don't know that doesn't constitute a "salad" in New York City. My biggest problem was with the "fresh" options at the salad bar. The cucumber/tomato salad lacked color and looked like it had been made last week. Not surprisingly, it tasted as such. :/ Then there was cole slaw that was drowning in dressing. Yuck. Next, I saw some other veggies (peppers and cabbage), but they were pickled. And that was the end of the "fresh" toppings. I got through half my "salad" and felt heavy and just grossed out. We threw out most of our meal. There was an oversized picture of broccoli on the wall, and not a stalk to be found. That's false advertising in my book. I drooled over that broccoli on the wall and left longing for any sort of fresh vegetable. If you want a fresh, healthy meal, you won't find it at Pitopia. read more

On a recent Sunday two of us bought Felafel we added Coleslaw and it was sour with a bad aftertaste and the tomatoes in the Israeli salad was already starting to go. Very disappointing their quality is unfortunately going down. We held back from stopping in there for more then a week, we averaged a minimum of 2 visits a week..
