Good is good. Definitely pricier than it should be but caters to the corporate crowd, so that makes sense. The details from the hot towels to the service are great.

A nice and very expensive kosher restaurant in Midtown Manhattan. I recently went here with a friend for a special occasion while in transit. Sen Sakana had absolutely outstanding service, some of the best I've seen in a while. When we arrived for our reservation, we were able to coat check our bags and were seated immediately. It seemed that each server was only assigned one table, which meant that we got immediate service whenever we needed something. Our dishes came out quickly and we were able to finish our dinner in well under an hour. The ambiance was dim red lighting and white tablecloths, and Sen Sakana invited fancier dressing. Even for a Midtown Manhattan upscale kosher restaurant, Sen Sakana is extremely expensive, especially when you factor in portion sizes. Sen Sakana does not list prices on its website-my friend and I had no idea how much things cost until we arrived. Most appetizers cost between $15-30 and entrees between $45-$120. With tax and tip, expect to pay minimum $60-$120 per person. My friend and I decided to split two appetizers and one main and my friend also got miso soup. At the price points, I expect the food to be outstanding. While the food was innovative, it was good but not incredible. The beef dumplings were good, but could have used more sauce than a tiny squirt bottle of soy sauce. The beef empanadas were delicious but small and only came with two empanadas. I tried the miso soup as well and it needed more flavor. My friend and I split the Quinoa Poached Egg Rice for our main dish and it needed more meat, some more egg, and more quinoa. I would recommend Sen Sakana if you are looking for a very upscale kosher restaurant for an extremely special occasion or for a big night on Broadway near Times Square; otherwise, there are other fancy and/or kosher restaurants in the area that are less expensive for similar or better quality.

A kosher Asian restaurant is a bit of a head scratcher, past the yarmulke, but the food was very good, as long as you're not jonesing for shrimp or scallops. The fish was very fresh. Some nice fusion dishes that jump into Latin America, like the ceviche with yuzu, shiso and Peruvian concha (toasted corn) Bar was good. We had a 101 on how to turn Sazerac rye into a sazerac cocktail. Service was above average. Great host stand.

Sen Sakana had been on my list for a very long time since the idea of Nikkei (Japanese-Peruvian) cuisine was very intriguing. I watched a show nearby and walked in with a friend; no reservations were needed because it was very empty on a Sunday evening. Service was polite but the server didn't quite understand what I asked and I noticed he didn't come by very frequently because I had to wait quite a while before I could order my drink. My friend and I ended up paying about $150 each for our food (2 appetizers, 2 entrees, 1 sushi roll, dessert, and 2 mocktails). I generally am not dropping over $100pp for a meal unless it's very good; unfortunately, this was a hugely mixed bag and I found it very hard to justify the prices. Maybe they have to pay a lot of rent for their real estate? + Nikkei ceviche ($26) - 10/10 - This was an excellent ceviche; the salmon was tender, very well flavored, and bright with the yuzu and shiso. I was impressed by this and loved the way it tasted. Every component was excellent. The only issue is that this is a tiny amount of ceviche for the price, especially when none of these ingredients are that expensive. + Mushroom empanada ($16) - 9/10 - These were very good; the skin was flaky and the filling was flavorful. The empanadas were shockingly small considering that they're $8 a piece and there was less than 2 tbsp of chopped mushroom in each. Yes, the skin was good, but am I paying $8 for 3 bites of puff pastry and mushroom? + Chicha morada ($12) - 8/10 - This was a solid drink; it reminded me of plum and was not very sweet. For a mocktail, this is about what I expect price-wise. The waiter told me this was cooked fruit, including pineapple; when I asked if this was mostly fruit or liquid, he was very confused and said fruit. My friend ended up ordering it and it was all liquid, so I got one too. + Maguto tuna tartare ($25) - 8/10 - It is honestly shocking to me that each piece of sushi is $5 for tuna, aji limo, and tomato salsa. The ingredients were very interesting and I've never had anything like this before, but again, very inexpensive ingredients. I'm glad I got this though because I can definitely make this myself. + Lomo saltado ($57) - 4/10 - This was a very disappointing lomo saltado, and incredibly so for the price. The steak was not tender and very lightly flavored. There was barely any sauce, so I'm not sure what I was supposed to do with the rice. The potatoes looked like they'd be crispy but they were not. I've had a much better one at Llama Inn (admittedly more expensive but much tastier and much larger). This portion was laughably small. + Poached egg quinoa fried rice with beef spare rib ($48) - 2/10 - This was so bad that I mainly kept eating it to check "Is it really this bad?" I almost spat out my first bite of rice because it tasted rancid. I've had aji amarillo before and it did not taste rancid. The beef was actually much more tender and tastier than the steak in the lomo saltado, but also much saltier; I had to eat it with the rice. Surprisingly it canceled out the rancid flavor so that the rice was edible, but I still didn't enjoy it. The poached egg part was just a poached egg on the side; the title made me think that the poached egg would be integrated into the rice and I was very intrigued by the idea. The reality was just a very subpar fried rice with egg cooked separately. There was no wok hei (maybe they don't employ that technique in Peru?) and the rice was not interesting at all except for the rancid flavor (which is interesting in a bad way). + Churros with hot chocolate ($18) - 8/10 - The churros are good. The hot chocolate is fine, if quite sweet. It's definitely not a dip because it's a drink, and it makes the churro lose its crunchiness. Sure it's a crunchy good churro, but I was disappointed that there was nothing else. For $18, I'm definitely expecting more. One of my favorite restaurants, Xixa, has equally excellent churros (if not better since they are matcha flavored - is that not Nikkei??) with passionfruit and chocolate dipping sauces that are thick and keep the churro crunchy. They also do not cost $18. The meal started off promisingly, but the mains were major disappointments. I was initially game to spend if this meal was going to be spectacular, but it very much did not hit the mark. I'm glad I tried it since it's been on my list and now I know what the pretty good appetizers taste like. I do think the dishes are very creative and inspiring, but I'd rather attempt these myself at home.

I've walked this spot a few times and it really intrigued me I wanted to see what it had to offer. For starters, your menu is an iPad, which a tech savvy guy like myself thinks is pretty futuristic . Love it. The restaurant is completely KOSHER CERTIFIED and a fusion Japanese & Peruvian cuisines. As well as if I may point out my first time being at one. The food was delicious & rich with flavor. I was a party of two. So we shared a bunch of appetizers and cocktails which I will list in details below (with pics of course !) Food: Picture # 1 - Nauruto (no rice Nikkei Maki) Pic #2 Japanese Cucumber & Wild Mushroom & VEGAN "cheddar" empanadas Pic #3 - CEVICHE NIKKEI, Beef Dumplings & Chicken Wings Cocktails: Pic # 4 - Warm Me Up Pic # 5 - OAXACAN OLD FASHIONED The bartender Sergio was really spot on with his recommendations! Try it out you won't regret!

I've never met a kosher Japanese Peruvian person before, but apparently, there is a market for them here, and I'm glad it's here. Service was prompt, attentive, and accurate. It was also very friendly and welcoming. I had the Smoky edamame to start and the toro roll and maguro roll. They were very good. They also have an excellent curated sake selection. I had the summer snow, which is my favorite, and not easy to find. I'd definitely come back and also try them for lunch. . Remember to tip well.

Came for the second time for happy hour drinks. Much, much better. Although we sat by the bar, it was same type of service and food prices were the same. HH is until 7PM and honestly a great deal. Got hot sake and an old fashioned ($9). When just looking at HH prices, GREAT deal.

I love fusion cuisine, and this kosher Japanese-Peruvian restaurant was absolutely delightful. I loved the innovative cocktails, and the sexy ambiance. The dim and red lighting made everything super intimate and was such a vibe. The service was amazing, and every one was super attentive. For the food, the ceviches were a MUST order. I also loved their miso eggplant, as well as beef cube stirfry. They also have a huge sushi selection, which is also a must order. The flavors of all the dishes were so unique, and the presentation was immaculate. I finished off with a yummy strawberry Oreo cake. Can't wait to be back!

Nice calm atmosphere for a Japanese lunch. They use one of those annoying ipad menus, so not being able to synthesize data as I usually do I ended up ordering a very expensive type of chicken and rice entree which could have fed three people. I upgraded it to a lunch special though so for $10 extra bucks I got soup, salad, and marinated tofu.

I have been wanting to try this fusion restaurant for a long time, back then it was advertised as non-tipping, although some old info on its website still says so, the menu and the check showed that this restaurant is no longer non-tipping. The waitress lady looked disinterested in doing her job, which also confused me that maybe she wasn't expecting tips? The restaurant uses iPad for menu, I guess it's fancy but the screen with wiped watermark (?) and other people's fingerprints (?) are gross.. A dried compressed hand towel was provided for each customer, but the water wasn't even hot, is this also part of the fusion or it should be hot in the Japanese way? Sesame crusted tuna tiradito (~$27), I usually like sour flavor and found the flavor of this appetizer dish is special and interesting. But for an appetizer, it's a bit pricey. The presentation of this dish could also be improved, it was not easy to pick up tuna along with avacado and tomatoes with the pointy chopsticks provided. Nigiri Plate ($55), I like that it presented the fish in both the traditional way and the fusion way. Again, the service made me wonder if tip wasn't expected, when the dish was served, no explanation was provided on what's what. Some of the pieces were easier to distinguish but some weren't. Anyway, finally tried the restaurant and can cross it off my list. I don't plan to come back. For the same price range, other Japanese restaurants in the area provide better value and better service.

Why is this restaurant tagged as Kosher? I see pork and shellfish on the menu..

It's been certified kosher there's a section on their website which has a picture of their certification by a rabbi

Can I order the lucuma ice cream to go?

Great question. We wouldn’t recommend getting the Ice Cream as take out unless you’re going to eat it immediately since it does melt quickly.

    Is there a corkage fee?

$50 per bottle for wines not represented on our wine list, except in special situations. Feel free to inquire further at info@sensakana.com. Thanks for inquiring!

Can a person who avoids gluten enjoy a meal here?

Yes we have a great gluten free menu.

I would like yo know if they have cooked food? I mean not sushi and thing like that thanks

However, it tasted like it had been reheated rather than cooked fresh. The bone was not hot and the fat was not fully rendered or caramelized, which took away from the overall experience.
