Mimmo's Ristorante Pizzeria - CANNOLI

We ate at Mimmo's two nights in a row while visiting family. The first evening was good -- we had…read morethe lasagna and pizza, and both were enjoyable enough that we decided to return the next night. Unfortunately, the second visit was a very different experience. I ordered the chicken piccata, and it was extremely disappointing. The sauce wasn't bright or balanced as you'd expect from a piccata. Instead, it tasted heavy and starchy, almost like thickened chicken broth, with none of the lemony depth or richness the dish should have. It was not enjoyable. It was also my birthday, which made the experience more frustrating. I let our waitress know that the dish wasn't good, but nothing was done to address it. There was no effort to adjust, replace, or even meaningfully respond, which felt dismissive. Additionally, the night before we had been told that gnocchi could be prepared for us the following evening. When we returned, that was no longer the case, and again there didn't seem to be much acknowledgment of the change. The inconsistency between the two nights was surprising. The restaurant is clearly capable of decent food, but the lack of follow-through and service recovery made the second visit disappointing.

Finding Mimmo's in Laurel right now is like searching for lost treasure in a construction zone --…read morethe kind where the street looks like Act I of a tragic opera: "Ode to the Detour." You'll battle cones, dodge machinery, and question your life choices. But when you finally burst through the doors? Bravo! The interior hits you like a grand crescendo -- exposed brick walls, high ceilings, the kind of lighting that makes you feel instantly more attractive. It's pure Tuscan theater. The service deserves a standing ovation -- all charm, smiles, and perfectly timed entrances. But once the food arrived, the orchestra started to lose the rhythm. The garlic rolls, priced at a dramatic $14, made their entrance dripping in butter -- so much butter, in fact, that garlic seems to have drowned somewhere backstage. The rolls glistened like they were auditioning for La Buttera. Soft, rich, and tasty, yes... but garlic? MIA. It's like sending Pavarotti on stage and getting a kazoo solo instead. Then came the pizza, whose crust sang a lovely opening note -- smoky, beautifully charred edges -- but the center was still a little... doughy. A tragic reminder that even great tenors sometimes miss the high note. The lasagna should've been the grand finale -- the full-throated aria of the meal -- but instead, it came out more like the understudy: pleasant, but lacking passion. The meat was flavorful, but the rest felt uncomposed. A little more Parmesan bravado could've saved the day. If Yelp had half stars, I'd give Mimmo's a 3.5, because the atmosphere and service are pure opera -- dramatic, romantic, and memorable. But the food? Still rehearsing. Come for the ambiance, stay for the butter, and hope that next time, the kitchen hits all the right notes. Final act verdict: Mimmo's has the stage presence of a headliner -- now it just needs a little more flavor in its aria.

Stopped in for lunch and ordered a calzone. It was beautifully prepared and full of flavor, but…read morejust too heavy for me. Packed with pepperoni, sausage, Canadian bacon, onions, and peppers, it came with a red marinara that had just the right touch of sweetness. I only managed to finish half--it was a meat lover's dream, but a little much for my taste. What really stood out was the service. The young lady at the counter was exceptionally friendly, all smiles, and even tried to tempt me into a Cotton Blues Cheesecake for dessert (I almost gave in!). The server who brought my order was just as warm and took the time to chat for a bit before the food arrived. Overall, a very pleasant experience. Next time, I'll be on the lookout for an Italian sub!

Also, the front counter person will give you a cup and you use the self serve soda dispenser or tea for the drinks. After you have pick your table, a server will bring you utensils and the food. I missed the days when a server brings you a menu, ask what kind of drink and order, and bring the entrees to you. Sorry, I digress from the review. Service - NOTE: 4 Stars -The staff were friendly, pleasant and professional. The server brought out my pizzas while I was waiting. Food: 3.5 Stars for both Pizzas I ordered two different pizzas. There are two sizes 10" and 14". I ordered two 14". The first for the pizzas were New York style (thin crust) and baked in a big oven at a high heat. Luigi's Combo: Pepperoni, Sausage, Canadian Bacon, Onions, Peppers and Black Olives. I added Jalapeños for a little bit of a kick. It was good but I wish the pizza was cooked for a few minutes more so the different meat and veggies were able to have a roasted and charred flavor. Super Veggie: Fried Eggplant, Peppers, mushrooms, garlic oil, and roasted red peppers. Both were good but the Super Veggie was slightly better because of the Fried Egg plant which gave the garlic oil tomato based sauce an extra flavor profile. The crust was thin and chewy. The ends or edge were slightly charred as you would expect. I recommend the restaurant and next time will make time to eat at the place instead of doing takeouts.

The service was attentive but not overwhelming. I'll be back.

I ordered the lobster ravioli, which sounded like a life decision I'd brag about later. What arrived was 4 ravioli and 4 small shrimp -- which, in most cultures, is called an appetizer but I might just need to go on a diet. Flavor-wise it was... politely stated..Not bad, just kind of bland. Also the shrimp still had the tails on, so dinner became a part-time job. Nothing says "fine dining" like performing minor seafood surgery in pink sauce while your pasta cools. The wine list was the real plot twist. No rosé. No Sauvignon Blanc. I have never -- and I mean never -- gone to an Italian restaurant and ordered beer out of necessity. Yet here we are. It just didn't feel right. Now, credit where it's due: the garlic bread was actually really good (though I'm pretty sure it didn't grow up in that kitchen), and the limoncello cake -- confirmed not house-made -- was honestly the star of the meal. Service was great, atmosphere was pleasant, and I didn't have a bad time... Three stars: good evening, questionable portion sizing, and a restaurant that accidentally convinced me to drink beer at an Italian restaurant.

I ordered the baked spaghetti, and it was absolutely phenomenal. The kind of dish that makes you pause halfway through the first bite and think, "Yep...this was the perfect choice." It tasted completely house-made, rich, comforting, and clearly prepared with the kind of love that usually comes from a kitchen where someone is yelling in Italian. The sauce, the pasta, the baked goodness on top--everything just worked. The wine list was also a pleasant surprise: great selection and very affordable. Nothing makes pasta happier than a good glass of wine that doesn't make your wallet cry. For dessert I went with the limoncello cake. While it wasn't house-made, it was still delicious--light, citrusy, and the perfect way to finish off a very satisfying meal. Here's the real kicker: the entire meal with wine was about $40 with my drink. In a world where mediocre pasta can somehow cost the same as a cell phone bill, this place delivers incredible value. It's not only the best quality Italian food I've found around here, it's easily one of the best meals I've had for the price. Bottom line: great food, great wine, and a price that doesn't require selling family heirlooms. I'll definitely be back.
