Finding Mimmo's in Laurel right now is like searching for lost treasure in a construction zone -- the kind where the street looks like Act I of a tragic opera: "Ode to the Detour." You'll battle cones, dodge machinery, and question your life choices. But when you finally burst through the doors? Bravo! The interior hits you like a grand crescendo -- exposed brick walls, high ceilings, the kind of lighting that makes you feel instantly more attractive. It's pure Tuscan theater. The service deserves a standing ovation -- all charm, smiles, and perfectly timed entrances. But once the food arrived, the orchestra started to lose the rhythm. The garlic rolls, priced at a dramatic $14, made their entrance dripping in butter -- so much butter, in fact, that garlic seems to have drowned somewhere backstage. The rolls glistened like they were auditioning for La Buttera. Soft, rich, and tasty, yes... but garlic? MIA. It's like sending Pavarotti on stage and getting a kazoo solo instead. Then came the pizza, whose crust sang a lovely opening note -- smoky, beautifully charred edges -- but the center was still a little... doughy. A tragic reminder that even great tenors sometimes miss the high note. Yep, there is Italian in Laurel! And some darn good Italian food, too. We ate here on a Saturday night and were able to be seated right away. The inside of the restaurant is huge. It has extremely high ceilings and so spacious. There is even a fountain right in the center. We sat in a very large booth. I had a crisp glass of sauvignon blanc to start. Let's get to the food. We split a large caesar salad and a supreme pizza. The salad was well dressed with scrumptious croutons. I wish we had more. The pizza had plenty of toppings and they were able to accommodate by only putting olives on half of the pizza. The crust had a good crispiness to it and tasted fresh. We ate the whole thing. To finish off the meal, we got 2 cannolis. While the cream was good, the shell could have had more crunch. Almost as if the cannoli was piped ahead of time and not right before serving. I went back and forth between 3 and 4 stars because I'm a big fan of North East Italian and this fell a little short. But what they do well, they do very well, starting with hospitality. We were taken care of immediately after winding our way through the construction to their front door. The dining room is warm and inviting and the owner stops by and chats proudly. I ordered veal that was to feature a brown sauce but what I got was barely tan and a bit grainy. Flavor was there and the veal was tender. There was plenty of the sauce and veal but strangely not much pasta. The same was true for the lasagna. Lots of sauce but just a small portion of the main event. We ate at Mimmo's two nights in a row while visiting family. The first evening was good -- we had the lasagna and pizza, and both were enjoyable enough that we decided to return the next night. Unfortunately, the second visit was a very different experience. I ordered the chicken piccata, and it was extremely disappointing. The sauce wasn't bright or balanced as you'd expect from a piccata. Instead, it tasted heavy and starchy, almost like thickened chicken broth, with none of the lemony depth or richness the dish should have. It was not enjoyable. It was also my birthday, which made the experience more frustrating. I let our waitress know that the dish wasn't good, but nothing was done to address it. There was no effort to adjust, replace, or even meaningfully respond, which felt dismissive. Additionally, the night before we had been told that gnocchi could be prepared for us the following evening. When we returned, that was no longer the case, and again there didn't seem to be much acknowledgment of the change. The inconsistency between the two nights was surprising. The restaurant is clearly capable of decent food, but the lack of follow-through and service recovery made the second visit disappointing. read more

We came on a Saturday evening early. Heard so much about the food from HomeTown. We only had 4 days and this was our splurge. Our waitress seemed to be preoccupied and our glasses were empty quite a few times. We chalked it up to it being a Saturday. But when our food finally came out, it was lukewarm at best. Huge footprint with a private room and big bar. Server was prompt and friendly. She was very attentive. Food ... it was good. Not great. And two adults SHARED an appetizer, an entree and a dessert - each had water and the cost was $50. That's a pricey meal & perhaps with all the tourists coming through town and the lack of downtown dining options - they have a captive audience? Bruschetta was fresh & flavorful. Could've used more balsamic. Chicken Parmigiana was overcooked (edges burnt) and tough to chew. Marinara was very tomato-y. My husband and I went to Mimmo's on a Friday and it was pretty packed. It's in downtown Laurel and is a quaint little place. Our waitress was super sweet but was definitely overwhelmed with two large parties. Our drinks were never refilled and our food took a long time to get. The calamari was very sad, most of the pieces were very hard to chew, there were some that weren't and it was okay. My husband ordered the cheese manicotti with meat sauce and for the price it was underwhelming. Not a lot of flavor. I order the pizza rustica and it was sooo good! We stopped in here on a Tuesday afternoon when Le Fleur was closed. The restaurant is really large and we almost had the place to ourselves. We sat at the bar and ordered Italian Margaritas. It's worth it to pay $2 more for top shelf and get patron. We looked at the lunch menu for quite sometime and were then also offered a dinner menu which had significantly more pasta options. The prices and portions are more reasonable on the lunch menu, but we were grateful for the dinner option as I was able to get a pasta primavera with shrimp and had enough for leftovers. Update to my previous reviews. The food and service are still excellent. The reason for the reduction of a star is the portion sizes are getting smaller while the price seems to be rising. For instance my wife had the lobster ravioli which she loved, but for over $30 shouldn't there be more than four of them? A delicious Italian restaurant in the heart of downtown Laurel. We ordered the calamari for an appetizer. Mimmo's has wood-fired pizzas and the one we chose was delicious. We ordered the "Suprema" pizza and split it as our main course. We both had a cannoli for dessert. Pro tip: when ordering a cannoli for dessert, always ask if it is stuffed on site. If it is, it is usually better than the premade desserts. The restaurant itself is very open and spacious. It has very high ceilings. The ambience of the restaurant is not romantic. They do have a private room in the front if you need to reserve it. I do not know if there is a fee to reserve the private room. There is a large fountain in the middle of the restaurant that adds to the ambience. Bottom line - pretty good Italian food that was a nice find in a town as small as Laurel, MS. We read the good reviews, we read the bad reviews, but decided to try the place anyway. Sorry, but we've got to go with the bad reviews. My husband ordered a veal dish and I ordered the eggplant Parmesan. Both were extremely salty. My husband suffered through his, but I sent mine back and got just a salad when the bill came. I was still charged with the eggplant Parmesan, which I had to discuss. At no point did our waitress ever remove any of our finished dishes from the table even after serving coffee. Found this gem while visiting Laurel. Very nice restaurant. The inside has a vintage look, yet modern. I love the brick walls. The hostess was friendly and we were seated immediately. The server was really nice and her customer service skills were great. I believe her name was Sarah. We also found out she's from our hometown so that was special. She was knowledgeable and patient, as we really couldn't decide what to get and then phone calls that interrupted our decision making. The restroom was clean and huge! There were 2 restrooms, doors weren't marked for male or female, they were designed exactly the same with huge space so you don't feel claustrophobic inside a stall. The food was delicious. Let me start with the bread. They grill the bread and give you that dipping sauce...yummy!!! We had the seafoo cannelloni! We're big Hometown fans so while visiting Laurel we stopped in here for lunch and loved it. My wife and I ordered three things to share - the calamari, a Caesar salad, and the meat lover's pizza. All were excellent and showed attention to detail. Service was quick, too. The calamari was cut in small pieces so it wasn't chewy at all. Marina was included. The Caesar salad came in a big bowl with shaved parmesan and plenty of croutons, and the dressing was very good. Finally, the meat lover's pizza had the crust just right where it was thin but still a little chewy with a bit of char on the edge. The sauce was fairly light but it had a good flavor. We arrived in Laurel and immediately wanted to find something yummy for a very diverse and dietary group. Happy to report there was something for everyone to enjoy. We ordered an Italian caprese type of sandwich, the muffalata, and our other two companions went with the salads. The red onion dressing is made in-house and is delicious (if not an onion fan, order Caesar dressing instead). The sandwiches were huge and very delicious. I really liked my muffalata, and my dining companion enjoyed his caprese/Italian. We had thick crunchy bread and lots of toppings and no lack of layers of ingredients. Just well made. I will share later overnight. i did end up very thirsty due to the quality Italian cut meats on the sandwich. But well worth it. We arrived around 1pm, and if I can give advice when staying or arriving in Laurel, make note that many food places stop serving lunch by 2p or 3p. You can always get food at chains. I left a a 5 star review for Mimmo's six years ago when I was in Laurel and it's just as good today. We came in from Virginia and had dinner with family last night and it was wonderful! I regret I didn't take pics, too busy in conversation, but the food was well plated. We had the calamari, lobster ravioli, Mediterranean salad, and a shrimp antipasto that I can't remember the name of. My six year old loved the spaghetti and meatballs. Every bite was wonderful. We were sat near the kitchen where they made the homemade pizzas and our kids absolutely loved watching them throw the dough up in the air! Me and my husband split a pizza while the kids got fettuccine Alfredo and spaghetti and meatballs. Kiddos were satisfied, and the frozen strawberry lemonade was a hit. Wine was decent although they need to have a much more detailed by-the-glass menu; it's limited to types of wine like Chardonnay or Pinot noir. So don't go expecting top notch wines unless you're ordering g a bottle; they do have good offerings there. Only thing good here was the ice tea. I have to agree with other reviews, better Italian food at Olive Garden. They only have two choices of salad dressings. Both awful. Food had no flavor. I am overdue for writing a review for Mimmo's as I have dined here at least twice since it opened a couple of years ago when I am in town. Laurel has lacked for an Italian restaurant for many, many years (not counting Pizza Hut or Pasquales) and Mimmo's has filled that spot. It's located in the refurbished and reborn downtown area with free street parking in front and a large free lot in the rear. When walking inside you will immediately notice the high ceilings. I mean like 30'+! That's because this space used to be a movie theater that had closed decades ago and the space not used since. Overall, I think Mimmo's did a good job with the interior decorating as it's a challenge doing it in such a large space. There is a large dining room along with an attractive bar to one side with a separated smaller dining room for small special parties. Reservations are a good idea on the weekend nights but usually not needed other times. Remember they are closed on Sundays. The menu consists of various pasta and pizza entrees as expected. In my opinion, prices are slightly high for Laurel with most in the $ upper teens and lower twenty's however this place does come across as upscale so you decide if that's too rich for your blood. A lower priced lunch menu is also offered. My first visit was for lunch where I had the penne bolognese for $11 with a side salad. It came with some bread and oil to start. That was a good meal overall that I rated as a 3. Nothing stood out as a 4 but it was still a decent meal. My most recent meal was about a month ago for dinner and I ordered the spaghetti al gamberi for $21. It was gulf shrimp sautéed over spaghetti in a garlic white wine sauce. This meal was a 4. The shrimp were large and the delicious sauce made for a tasty and filling meal along with the complimentary side salad and bread. On both visits our table service was good. I think of Mimmo's as a 3.5 level of restaurant and believe you will get a good meal. I've taste some of their pizzas too and liked the light and pillowy crust. We loved Mimmo's! The service was great! We are on Columbus Day because everything else was closed but we didn't regret this stop! If you go, ORDER THE GARLIC KNOTS!!! Trust me!
