Overall: decent pizza with fun options, pretty slow service, upbeat atmosphere. I would get delivery but unlikely to rush back to eat-in. Came with my family (7 people total) around 4pm on a Saturday. About 2 other tables in there and yet the service was rather slow. We ordered the Italian egg roll and garlic knot French fries for an appetizer. Everyone enjoyed the fries but there were mixed reviews on the egg roll. It sounded yummy on the menu but the taste was odd and left me feeling sick to my stomach. Tasted like raw meat and cheese (my sister agreed) but others loved it so it was probably just polarizing. Unfortunately for me, my stomach didn't settle all night. Pizza: it's good. Not the greatest I've ever had but I enjoyed it. It's a bit on the small & thin side so be sure to order a pizza with lots of toppings if you're hungry. Slightly greasy with minimal cheese & sauce and yummy crust. The pizza is amazing! The crusts are excellent, both the regular and the gluten-free ones- they are both PIZZA! We also tried the brussels sprouts which were great, and the garlic fries, which were very good but maybe had a bit too much (delicious!) stuff on them- I liked the plain fries better. Tonight is Pizza J's first night open. I called and tried to order take out. I was kindly informed they were not able to accommodate take out orders over the phone tonight (perhaps next week), but I could walk in and order to go. And that's what we did! There is a parking lot in front of the building. There's not a ton of space, but better than no lot! There were tables and chairs for outdoor seating. They have a counter where they sell by the slice, a decent size seating area, and a bar that sits maybe 8-10 people. All the employees were really nice and friendly. The pizza was good. It's thin crust. I thought it was a little flimsy, you know the kind of pizza that when you pick it up the end flops down and then all of a sudden all your toppings are sliding down with it? Like that. But, the toppings were all good quality. The pepperoni was thick and appeared to have been cut on the premises. The tomato sauce had a nice flavor. If the crust was crispier it would have been great. I'm sure there are small kinks to work out, so I plan to return when they've been open a bit longer. read more

Yesterday was our last day of vacation in RI and Pizza J was a place I wanted to try. We arrived on a Saturday evening around 9pm and they weren't very busy. They're opened until midnight. The guy at the host stand made us stand there for over 5 minutes after we asked for a table for 2. He first went over to a table where people had left and cleaned the table of all plates, etc. What?! We weren't even seated at that table so why couldn't it wait? When he came back over to us he pointed to our table and that was that. We walked over to it ourselves. Our server came over and got our drink order then came back for our food order. The food was really, really good. (I just read another review that stated she was told by her server that the vegan fried foods were actually fried in the same oil as meat! We were never made aware of this even though we ordered the vegan califlower po boy. I hope that's not the case anymore.. But if you are vegan and go here, definitely ask). I waited and waited for our server to come back to ask for extra napkins and to order another beer. Well, she never came back. My boyfriend was going to go up to the bar to order one for me, but i told him not to. Do they not realize that the more people spend, the more the bill will be? We were just annoyed at this point. We finally got a box for our food and the got bill. We left cash on the table and left. While we were still at our table and before we even had our coats on, a girl started bussing our table. I don't know why the service was so bad because there were so many employees standing around the kitchen eating and hanging out when we got there. Maybe cut back of the amount of staff and keep on the good/quality ones. We always leave a 20% or more tip and felt a little bad that we didn't at Pizza J, but the service was that bad. So bad that if we ever came back we would just order take out. Would have given a much better review if the service was better and if they didn't use the same oil for veggies as they do for meat. For a place with the word Pizza in their name, its funny that their pizza is the worst thing on the menu. Overpriced, light on toppings/flavor, too thin... Ive been dissapointed every time Ive come here (especially for ~20 per pizza), but most recently they served us what was unanimously the worst "pizza" we had all ever eaten. If you are looking for pizza choose anywhere else around. Atmosphere is solid, art is really nice. Restaurant goers seem to try really hard to believe they are in a solid spot. All in all, if you dont mind spending more than your foods worth to be in a moderately social hipster environment to eat average food this is for you. Pizzaria Gusto is faaaaaaar superior in terms of pizza. 2/5 is generous. I really want to like this place, but they make it very difficult. read more

I'd love to give it 5 stars, just for being a part of the J establishment. However, not everything has been great and sometimes the service is quite lacking. However, the pizza is great (the crust is so lovely). I would recommend the pepperoni; nice thick slices that have a little chew to them. Yum. I've been a fan of Julian's for a while, so when I heard they were opening a Pizza place, I knew I had to go! I really love this place. I first went about a month ago, and have been back 3 more times since. I've been recommending it to friends and they love it too! I'm vegan, and the vegan pizza and seitan wings are amazing! So delicious. The pizza crust is awesome, I'm not sure what people are complaining about. Even my non-vegan friends who had regular pizza said it was excellent. Not only was their food amazing so was their customer service. I went there with my 2 young kids (1 year old and 5 year old) and didn't realize their dining room was closed. Anyone with small children knows what a challenge it can be to take your small children out to eat. Instead of us having to leave, pack the kids back into the car, find somewhere else to eat, the server opened up the dining room for us and gave us great service. Food is good, but really poor "policies" in place, which screw over customers. Menu in the actual restaurant that was handed to me advertises half price apps Mon-Saturday from 4-6. We ordered at 5:37 and when we got our check, we were just told "you can't get half price apps on Sat" and when I pointed out that the menu in my hand said that was not the case, I was told, "there's typos all over the menu, that's just how it is." Really crappy customer service, that shall keep me from returning in the future. If something is advertised on the menu as a certain price, it should be honored, period. If you've changed policies and promos, that's fine too, but make sure your actual menus that you hand out to customers are correct. If they're not, you shouldn't be forcing customers to pay more for your mistakes. read more

This is a cool little joint. Really tasty pizza with a fabulous crust. And super nice people who work there. It is a little dark at night, and on the small side for an eat-in establishment. But, the wait wasn't bad at all. Prices aren't too bad; about 16 bucks/pizza. Not too many different things to choose from, which for me is good so I don't get overwhelmed with all the options. But you still can do your basic design your own pizza thing too. I had the Olneyville pizza, which was basically a wiener turned into a pizza...very mustardy, but I love that! And we had a pizza called the Yeti w/BBQ pulled pork & onion; it was fabulous. Tried the sampler appetizer to; came with temper that Shibles, onion rings, french fries, a fried mozzarella triangle, and an Italian a girl... Pretty good! I was really intrigued to try this place. And much to my surprise, I discovered they hold a game night once a month. Perfect opportunity in my mind! Went with my son and a couple of friends, enjoyed tasty food, and played a fun game. I like the location of this restaurant, in providence but a little ways from the congested part of downtown. They have a parking lot and some street parking nearby. I went in for the first time because i had wing coupons. I wasn't impressed by the wings themselves, but I did really like the sauce I got. The texture of the wings were not quite right and felt fatty. The whisky cola bbq sauce was super tasty though. I would like to go back to try the pizza because it looked really good and everyone around me seemed to be enjoying it. I got a cocktail called the tuscadero. It wasn't sweet at all which I like and came in a cute champagne glass. It wasn't that busy for a Friday night. There's also games that you can play while you're waiting for your food. They fell a bit short with the food as both the appetizer and pizza came out at the same exact time, the calamari was overcooked so it was a bit rubbery, and the pizza (steak and cheese) was tasty but didn't have a lot of toppings. They both tasted exactly the same, like slightly lemony water. My son ordered pizza with chicken on it. The chicken tasted reheated. The other pizza was pepperoni. The sauce was mediocre and the pepperoni was thin and barely had any flavor. My son's friend got a soda and his cup was cracked down the side, so it leaked out all over him and the table, so much so that he had to change seats. Pizza J hits all the markers of a hip, trendy restaurant aimed at Millenial consumers. There's kitch everywhere, from the classic arcade machines to the toys everywhere, to the televisions playing 80s cartoon movies and first season MST3K. They attract a cool clientele and sitting in one of their booths surrounded by many young-ish, visibly tattooed, movers and shakers gives the "cool" factor that so many restaurants strive for. Those are not the reasons to go to Pizza J. All of those attractions- the decor, the other customers, the uniqueness of it could all disappear and what you would be left with is excellent grub. Pizza J makes fantastic pizza while serving good drinks and that's the most important reason to go there. So far I've eaten the Beautiful Yeti BBQ pizza and Alphabet Street meat pie and they were both obnoxiously good. Excellent taps too, never found a bar in RI that served Vape Tricks sour beer or Bantam cider before so even if you're not big into pizza (are there people like that? I came here for lunch with my daughter and her friend. They wanted sandwiches which I thought was a bad idea since it is a pizza place but we ordered them anyway. We had the fried risotto balls for an appetizer which were good. We each ordered a sandwich with a side of fries. The sandwiches do not come with anything so the fries are extra. Our waitress did not mention how big the orders of fries are so we each ordered our own. The waiter who brought them to our table did make a face about us all ordering our own fries. I had the eggplant palm sandwich, the eggplant was thicker than I like but it was good. My daughter had the Italian which she said was ok and her friend had the chicken Caesar which she said was good. We all liked the fries. Our waitress was nice, but just not very good at being a waitress. She didn't check to see if we wanted more water, she didn't explain the payment on the iPad, she took to long to come back to our table to bring the check. Well Pizza J must have hired magicians or mad scientists because not only was their vegan cheese just as good as the real thing, I can confidently say that their pizza was the best I've ever had; real cheese or not. I ordered a pizza with a BBQ base, onion, jalapeno, pineapple, and seitan. I ate ALL of it including the crust with some extra BBQ sauce for dipping. I will preface this by saying, I'm not a big fan of red sauce, so the sheer amount of white pizzas on the Pizza J menu is enough to get 5+ stars from me. The "smoking with boots on" pizza, has thinly sliced potatoes, smoked mozzarella, and the most indulgently sweet/smoky tomato jam, topped with chunks of toasted panchetta and 4 over easy eggs. The smoked hot wings are sauced with an Indian chili sauce and cannot be improved upon.
