The pizzas looked good when they came out, but the second you picked up a slice the toppings and cheese slid completely off. No cheese pull, no structure, just a soggy undercooked mess in the middle. The crust was the biggest issue. What looked like a stuffed crust was really just thick undercooked dough that never fully baked through. It made the pizza feel heavy and gummy instead of crispy or chewy. The pepperoni pizza was honestly ridiculous. It had maybe four giant pepperoni slices on the entire pie, so every other bite was just plain cheese and undercooked dough. For almost $45 a pizza, this was a huge disappointment. read more

Soupy toppings like an oil slick. they burned my husband's pizza (remember this is a pizza restaurant) so we had to wait another 25 min for another one. Everything was delicious! The pizza, the cheesy garlic bread, the chicken Alfredo and the calzone were all Devoured by our group of 5. Ordered a large pizza. Probably could have got away with a medium and not need to get a take-home box. The cheese to thick and tasty! Next time I would specifically request that our cheesy bread arrive as an appetizer and to serve the Alfredo when the pizza and calzone were ready. Wow! Best calzone we've ever had. We sat outside on the patio during a beautiful late summer sunset and had an incredible meal. The staff was very helpful and friendly. The food was incredible. After a long vacation and having pizza a few times, I was ready to be done but our kids insisted on pizza. We ordered the personal cheese pizza for them, the slash pile sandwich and ponderosa calzone for my husband and I to share. And wow- this was much better than any pizza I've had for a while. Food was mediocre. Our family of 2 adults and 2 children stopped for dinner on our way through town. We had a personal pizza, chicken mean green salad, pasta and meatballs, and chicken tenders. Go a place that specializes is pizza, it seems like the pizza would have been better. My daughter's pasta was so watered down that we had to dab it with napkins to soak up the water that made the red sauce extremely runny. My chicken on my salad was supposed to be roasted chicken, however it was processed. Overall, I would not return. Our $70 dinner was not worth that cost. If you're visiting the beautiful and charming town of Custer, it is a must to try Pizza Mill! One of the best pizzas I have ever had. My husband and I ordered a medium pepperoni pizza and half with pickles. If you're a pickle fan, pickles on your pizza is a perfect combination and a great way to restore some electrolytes after doing a 7 mile hike. They don't hold back on the cheese! Perfect cheesy amount! The pepperoni was like hidden treasure underneath the cheese. The dough was excellent! I don't eat the crust most times but this one I devoured it. Nice and fluffy in the inside and just slightly crispy on the outside. Cute spot to get some pizza. They have house specialty, or you can build your own. The pizza is thin crust but not crispy. It makes it hard to eat the pizza without a fork and knife. The crust is too thin for the toppings. The flavor of the pizza was still very good. My only complaint is how many flies were inside the restaurant. We were in Custer for a weekend and decided pizza was what we wanted. After reviewing menus at the different pizza joints, we selected Pizza Mill. It. Was. Fantastic. We got the all meat (forgive me for forgetting the name) with jalapeños on half. The jalapeños were lackluster. The pizza itself was not. The crust is made by hand with little twists/tucks/pinches around the edges. Tons of cheese. We opted for the dine in. The location is small and tight but there is patio seating available. I noticed honey on the table's condiments. Not sure why but I did add some to my pizza and it was pretty good. Also, the Pizza Mill appears to be good stewards for events held in the community as they were listed as a sponsor for the Mount Rushmore HRC hunt test we were in town attending. Had I known that when we were at the restaurant, I would have thanked them personally. Anyway, if you're like us and try to eat at local establishments when traveling, stop here. I need to begin this review by saying that the food here is really good. The crust on the pizza is especially unique and flavorful. That's the reason I'm giving this place two stars rather than one. Unfortunately, the service we received was horrendous. Based on all the fantastic reviews, I don't know what to make of our experience. Nonetheless, I think people need to be aware of what happened when my family dined here. When we walked in, there were two people ahead of us, and it took about 10 minutes for anyone to come to the counter to take the first order. Then, the girl at the counter left for another 10 minutes to serve food. It took around half an hour for us to even place our order. I should also add that each additional topping on a pizza costs $2.50. $2.50!!! I've paid up to $1.50 for each extra topping, but this was ridiculous. Next, we grabbed an empty table that needed to be bussed. No one ever came to clean the table despite us asking a few times, so we cleaned it ourselves. Despite some of the worst service I've ever had, I don't fault the young lady working there. She clearly needed help and couldn't do the work alone, but she was the only person working in the front of the restaurant. Staffing is a problem at many establishments, and Pizza Mill is no exception. The food is excellent, but if you decide to eat here, bring your patience. read more

As a local, we try to help local businesses when we can. In a quest for calzones, found them on their menu. Ordered two: pepperoni, sausage, black olives, extra cheese. Seriously overdone, seemed more cheesy and less pepperoni and other toppings. Sad to say I didn't check the order before I left. I'll count this as an "off-day" (December 28) and will try again.
