Bottom line: three stars for the pizza, four stars for the rest. Ok, with that out of the way, I saw one of the previous reviews proclaiming that Pizza Papalis has the "best pizza in Toledo." My first thought was: "Sister, you must not eat much pizza in T-Town." I've been here couple/three times, and I'm just not that impressed by the pie. The Chicago style is pretty good, IF Chicago style pizza is your thing. It's filling, and it's made with tasty ingredients. In general, these pies tend to be expensive, BUT, if you take into account "grams of pizza per dollar," the cost is probably about average. I'm not crazy about Chicago style pizza, but it definitely fits the bill when I'm in the mood for something a little different. In general, this is a very good product. In terms of taste and value, the thin crust (not really that thin) is actually well below average for Toledo. I'd skip it. The atmosphere is pretty cool; it's just what you'd expect from a nicely repurposed building in downtown Toledo. Like a lot of the new businesses downtown, Pizza Papalis really shines in this area! The waitstaff has always been very friendly and attentive, especially the knowledgable bartenders. Our waitresses have always warned us about the wait-time on the pizza. I've found it to be a longer than expected wait for the thin crust, and a (pleasantly) shorter than expected wait for the Chicago style. Although I'm not super crazy about the pizza here, it's certainly one option for pizza in downtown Toledo. It's also a great place to bring the family after a Mud Hens game. Fun. read more

This is the second time I have eaten here! I have left extremely impressed both times! Today we had the bruschetta cheesy bread as an appetizer. It was pretty good. My only suggestion to improve it would be to find a way to make the bread crispier. Possibly toast it before adding the toppings, & baking it. We had the Meat Lovers today, & it was excellent! My brother wanted pan pizza so we came here. What a mistake. We ordered garlic cheese bread and it came out with the cheese perfectly melted on top but the bottom was cold as ice. Not sure how they accomplished that. The server got us another one and it was cooked all the way through. We ordered a medium pan pizza with onion and spinach on one half and pepperoni and sausage on the other half. The sausage tasted bad and I scooped it off. The pizza came to $35 dollars and it was mediocre at best. The bill came to $51.09 for a medium pan pizza, garlic bread and 2 teas. If it was tasty, I would not have minded but paying $51.09 for food that was not good (59.09 total with tip) is ridiculous and a waste. The server was okay, she kept up on the tea refills but fell short on checking on how the pizza was. She saw the sausage picked off and when I told her it tasted bad she just shrugged her shoulders. Also, we were the only people in the restaurant and it took over 40 minutes to get our pizza. I do not recommend this place and will not be back. read more

They are consistently good; their pizza reminds me of lasagne: The texture, the flavor! They were accommodating to my need for meat to be on my Gluten free crust; normally gluten-free pizza, does not include any of the meats that are raw, as in they need to be cooked! For my final Friday working downtown, I walked to Pizza Papalis for lunch. The restaurant was moderately busy when I arrived around just after noon, however I was pleasantly surprised to be seated straight away. Another pleasant surprise, was my table on the bar side of the first floor, with the windows up and the screens down, giving me unfettered access to the beautiful weather, sights, and sounds on North Huron Street! Glancing at the lunch menu, I selected the baked mostaccioli with meat sauce and an iced tea. Before tax and tip, my bill was $8.99, which feels like a really good price for lunch downtown. The downstairs bar section of the restaurant was attractively decorated with many signs showing the various libations available, and the granite top bar looked absolutely gorgeous! A couple of flat screen televisions hung from the walls, and were turned to different channels for the enjoyment of the patrons. Importantly, all had the closed captioning turned on, which was a nice touch. However for me, the best part of the restaurant was the fact that the 'outside wall' on my booth was just a floor-to-ceiling window screen. It almost felt like I was having lunch directly on the sidewalk on North Huron Street, but without all the sun! When it arrived, the baked mostaccioli was very good. The meat sauce had an excellent flavour, and the dish was baked with the perfect amount of mozzarella cheese! All too often pizzerias either go overboard with the cheese (which then melts into a nearly impermeable layer) or skimp on the cheese, but Pizza Papalis nailed it perfectly in the Goldilocks zone with just the right amount. I also appreciated how the waitress brought me several tea refills without me ever needing to ask. For good food at an equally good price, great service, and a fantastic atmosphere, I rate Pizza Papalis as Very Good, and will definitely be returning! read more

PizzaPapalis brings families out for dinner downtown. After a ball game, your options are mostly sports-bars and I think the family friendly atmosphere is really great. The food is authentic as Toledo will get to Chicago style pizza, and they are pretty efficient on getting orders out in a timely manner. I just picked up two calzones and would say avoid hot to-go items that get packed in styrofoam. The food tasted terrific, but by the time I got home everything had steamed up and gotten soggy. No more having to drive to Chicago for deep dish pizza. When I heard that Pizza Papalis had deep dish pizza, I was excited but at the same time a little skeptical. Real chicago style deep dish pizza in Toledo? I had the VIP with sausage added on it and it was delish! It's stuffed with toppings. And the cheese- ahhh, gooey and delicious! And the portions are huge! One drawback is the wait- it wasn't busy at all (we were one of 2 tables there) and our pizza took 30-40 minutes. The good thing is that you can call in ahead of time. We had a good experience here. You have to go in knowing that if you want the deep dish that it's going to be 40 minutes. We got just a plain deep dish pepperoni since we had picky people. My son enjoyed a meatball calzone. I thought it was good but a bit bland. We ordered the chicken and fries off the kids menu for our daughter. $6.99 for kids meals seems maybe a couple dollars too high. We'll come back as the crust was good. My group talked me into trying this place. We usually make our own pizzas at home. Was not sure what to expect with the Detroit style pie. I must say that the crust is amazing. It was hearty with a good doughy springy texture. We got the Greek which was tasty. I would have liked more spinach because it was barely noticeable. Having worked here briefly when they opened and having been there many times after I can say this: 1: The Sheena's are very nice people. Joe will carry himself business as usual. He is a business man and the group has had a concept that they made work here in Toledo. 2: Mark, Joe and Tom where very hands on in the beginning. Even some time after that. However, I can say that quality has seemed to drop in recent years. I do not know if it is a quality control issue or if it is maybe the place simply is not ran as well. Not saying the pizza is terrible because it is not. I have just noticed that the last several times that I ordered the thin crust it was severely lacking in cheese and undercooked. No reason for that to happen when you are not even busy. That is just being lazy. 3. In all fairness I can say that I have had Giordano's in Chicago to compare their deep dish too and I though it was equally comparable. Exemplary quality and taste. The seven of us (all over 21) stopped in on a Sunday evening at 5 and didn't get our food until 6. It did look like there were only two servers but they were pretty dead until 6:30. Our waitress was very pleasant and had a great attitude but it was a little hard to get ahold of her and we did have to ask for water a few times before it actually showed up. When the Chicago style "stuffed" pizza came out it was great. Very very similar to Giordano's in Chicago except the cheese didn't have quite as much flavor. If you like Giordano's, you'll like this. My meatball calzone only had two meatballs in it but it was still delicious! We sat upstairs, overlooking a parking garage and a cornucopia of empty and/or abandoned buildings in downtown Toledo. What happened to this city? Every building except Church's Chicken needs a fresh coat of paint. If you've never been Toledo, it's like Detroit, only no one's trying to fix it up.
