So, I ordered a Pumpkin Spiced Iced Coffee and threw it away after a few sips. I have visited Bowie, Maryland location frequently and was excited to enjoy the experience in New Orleans. However, that was far from the experience I had. The establishment was dark and unwelcoming. The staff was behind the counter gossiping and having a jolly ole time. This little coffee shop compliments the Doubletree hotel but it could easily stand on its own. I was greeted immediately upon arrival from all 3 baristas. I got the King cake coffee (seasonal) and it was great, had a slight hint of sweetness as it was flavored with cinnamon and vanilla. My coffee went extremely well with the slice of King cake I had. The only downside to the cookie was simply that it crumbled so easily, but that is normal for gluten free. This PJ's is located inside the Doubletree Hotel on Canal. On the day that I was working an event at the hotel, this PJ's was a lifesaver. The store itself is small, but has a few tables and chairs. The coffee was good and the staff was fast and friendly. I was here at 10am and, for some reason, they were in the middle of a staff change and could only accept cards. That wasn't a big deal, but I've never experienced that at other locations. A large iced coffee came to about $3.47, which is a bit cheaper than my regular PJ's, so I was happy. read more

My least favorite coffeehouse chain in town, they charge like a buck for an ounce of soy milk in your drip coffee when soy milk is cheaper than half and half which is free. Today I wanted something sweet and since I am familiar with the horrendous quality of their pastries, I decided to get a slice of cheesecake. Unlike everything else, there was no price listed in front of the cheesecake but I figured the most it could be is $4.95 since everything else had price signs of about 3 dollars. I ADORE this little PJs coffee shop tucked away in the lobby of the Double Tree Hotel. I occasionally work in the CBD on Sunday afternoons and I always hit up this place for a large coffee as a pick me up before my second shift. As a matter of fact, I'm sitting here right now. Fuck yeah! It's peaceful, quiet, and there's only one other person in here making it a haven for an antisocial introverted bitch such as myself. This place has great coffee. I don't need to get the bananas foster-Who Dat tourist orgasm blend (that sounds a bit gnarly now, doesn't it?) in order to be satisfied. Their plain, everyday, house brew alone is quite yummy. It has a soft taste to it, not at all bitter. It also doesn't have that strong, burned-out aftertaste that some coffees do, the kind where you can just feel the heavy tariness (is that even a word?) clinging to your teeth like a barnacle and making them a charming shade of nicotine brown. Besides a decent cup of coffee shop coffee, I also appreciate the peace and serenity of the place. I do know they get a hectic breakfast crowd on the weekends and during peak times, but usually the place is relatively quiet. So quiet that I could curl up on the couch in the corner and do my taxes if I wanted to. Many a time I've been down in NOLA while the spectacle known as Mardi Gras is going down, or before and after a Saints game when the raving lunatic, Who Dat nation is out in full force, and when I sail through the glass doors of this PJs it's like entering a sanctuary of desperately sought after peace and normalcy. They have quite a few tables to sit at and one fabulously, coffee-shop tacky, blue and gray couch with ugly deep purple pillows. They used to have two couches, but now they only have the one. I'm still lucky enough to score it when I come in here most of the time. On Sundays they'll have the Saints game on the TV. It's a hell of a lot quieter watching it here than at a sports bar surrounded by rambunctious Who Dat freaks. The baked goods are decent. It's not the Pepperidge Farm or anything, but they have a festive assortment of muffins, croissants, scones, and shit of that nature. The scones won't make you piss yourself with happiness, but they are adequate over-size, airport quality bakery scones. The brownies (they don't have them all the time) are pretty fucking killer. Very chocolately and fudgey. Delicious! If healthiness floats your boat they have a spread of fruit cups, yogurt (even Greek yogurt) granola, and today I noticed they even have lunchbox size Silk almond milk boxes. I had one and it was cold, yummy, and even came with an adorable, little straw. Like with any continental style breakfast that caters to travelers (think airport food) it is pricey. My dainty Capri Sun of almond milk (actually, smaller than a Capri Sun) was over $2! But hey, it's to be expected. Not only was I buying fancy hippie almond milk, but I was buying it at a hotel coffee shop that caters to hordes upon hordes of drunk tourists who will pay anything for a starchy croissant and cup of joe to cure their Sunday morning hangover. Basically a medium house coffee and whatever goodie you choose to have with it will run you between $5-6. This is probably pretty darn close to Starbucks or CC's prices so it's not anything out of the ordinary. For those who dig fancy lattes and slush puppy-chinos they have all kinds of crazy-ass seasonal shit to choose from: frozen mochas and praline lattes. Matcha lattes, wedding cake lattes, gingerbread lattes ... I could go on and on. It wouldn't surprise me if they even have a Who Dat latte. Maybe they brew some of Drew Brees' piss in with the milk, coffee, and cinnamon? Yum yum yummy! I've never tried any of their fancy lattes and cappuccinos, but I'm sure they're pretty tasty. After all, the regular house coffee is solid, and gingerbread and cinnamon makes everything better. And last but certainly the most awesome of all, this particular PJs has recently added candy bars to their repertoire of overpriced goodies. By candy bars I don't mean the la-tee-da, European chocolate bars such as Milka or Ritter Sport. I'm talking about gas station quality candy bars: Kit Kats, Snickers, M&Ms, and Reese's peanut butter cups. I like this new addition. Coffee and chocolate go together like Lilo and Stitch and Rodgers and Hammerstein. Mind you, I did pay $2 for my Reese's peanut butter cups but who cares? It's a hotel coffee shop in the middle of Who Dat USA. It's a small price to pay for a good cup of coffee and a sliver of tranquility right in the midst of it all. read more
