I went to Café Fleur de Lis for brunch, and unfortunately, the experience was very unsettling from the moment we walked in. As we walked upstairs, we were immediately hit with a strong smell of oysters mixed with what smelled like a public restroom. It was honestly very unpleasant and made us question whether we should stay. We felt bad leaving, so we decided to stay and simply share one meal. The food itself wasn't necessarily terrible, but the overall atmosphere and presentation of the restaurant made it difficult to enjoy. The smells, cleanliness, and general condition of the space really took away from the experience. I also went to use the restroom, and unfortunately, that only added to the discomfort. The bathroom was visibly unclean and had a very unpleasant atmosphere. At that point, I was already feeling pretty unsettled about the overall experience. I do want to make it clear that I understand the server is not responsible for the food, cleanliness, or overall condition of the restaurant. I actually intended to leave a 20% tip if the service was good because I don't believe servers should be penalized for things outside of their control. However, toward the end of the meal, our server came to the table and asked who was paying, and then followed up by asking, "Would whoever's paying want to leave a tip?" We ended up leaving $10 on a $17 meal, which is well over 20%, because we genuinely did feel bad that the environment wasn't her fault. However, that final comment was unnecessary and left an even worse impression of the experience. Overall, the service wasn't the main issue. It was the combination of the smells, cleanliness, atmosphere, presentation, and the way the experience ended that made me feel like I would not want to return. The balcony itself is quite long compared to what you expect to see in Europe, of course. The main highlight for us remained the food. Went here for brunch for our first full day in New Orleans. The place is unassuming, a cute little spot for brunch. They had a downstairs and upstairs for more space. We ended up getting sat right away upstairs, it felt like climbing Mt. Everest in the moment since we were coming off going out that previous night and felt every step haha. For this place, i went for their classic Big Easy Breakfast which came with a short stack of pancakes, two slices of bacon, a sausage and toast but i didn't want the toast. I also added the grits since a friend told me the grits were to die for..which they were right! Those grits were probably the best I ever had, they were so creamy and every bite was incredibly satisfying. The pancakes were light and fluffy and the bacon was bacon but good as well. The sausage was cold so I ended up not eating it. I also ordered a cold brew with brown sugar and it was very good. My husband got the Creole Country breakfast, which comes with boudin sausage, two eggs, grits, and a biscuit. The Fleur de lis omelette was delectable. The crawfish etouffee on top of an omelette really pushed it to the next level. The portions are notably large. The side of grits, which looks kind of small, is actually so rich and heavy and creamy that it's all you really need (and it was really, really good). My husband also enjoyed his Creole Country breakfast. I love how many sides it comes with, and though the menu states two eggs, it was such a large portion of scrambled eggs that we really thought it must be about 4 eggs' worth. Boudin was not really my thing (it was my first time having it) as it has a mushy texture. I thought the breakfast here was so good and the interior is very cute. Service was friendly as well. As a local, this has been my favorite French Quarter breakfast spot for a while now - they expanded and now have two locations. I prefer the Camp St location as it feels more bright and spacious. If Chartres is busy I can assure you it is just a quick walk to the other location to check on the wait time - which is usually much less than the French Quarter. There are just enough options on the menu to offer something familiar and options to try something more Southern - like a Boudin Omelette or my favorite, the Fleur De Lis Omelette, topped with Crawfish Etouffee. I always enjoy when an omelette is cooked thoroughly (no runny eggs); every omelette I've had here has been cooked very well. I've also had the Crab Catch Omelette on two occasions ; for me the peppers and onions overpower the omelette a You really can't go wrong with the menu; all of the visitors that I've taken here have thoroughly enjoyed it. I would say that the coffee is New Orleans traditional and that is often too strong for me. That's just a preference but it is also nice to give it a try. Service speed and friendliness of service can be hit or miss. As many times as I've been there, I'm always seeing new faces working there. read more
