Headed out to PJ's with my brother and his wife while I was in town for a wedding. The place is definitely a local hang out and the bar was packed on a friday night at 8 pm. I'd say the crowd ranged from tables of 18-22 year olds to throngs of late 20s to late 30s at the bar. I thought the joint was just fine. I didn't have the same experience as KR at our table. We had a few pitchers and managed to camp out for the better part of 4 hours without the wait staff bugging us to move on. All in all a fine place. Nothing fancy. read more

Medium burgers that are just that: We found a place that has medium burgers and they taste really good. I had the bison burger and my buddies had hamburgers and we all like them medium cooked. And they came out medium, thanks too the cook for that. As some of you know we love our iced tea and keeping our tea glasses full gets you a better tip. Our waitress Julie M. walked by our table twice holding a pitcher of tea and never asked ... Can I refill your glasses, we had to ask her to fill them.. The food here is fantastic BUT the service is a bit slow ... The reason I rated this place a 3 instead of a 4 is due to Julie M. PJ's should stand for perfection and Just amazing, because thats what it was. I had a burger and fries which were cooked to perfection and came out fresh. The service was also great, the staff very friendly. At one point during my meal lets just say I got a couple of looks from a young lady across the way which in turn was a bad thing because she was a high school senior. Then her QB boyfriend came over and asked me if I was looking at her to which I replied I'm only into older women like late 30s early 40s. Then I asked if it was a school night and he let me know that High School QBs going after state don't believe in school nights. As he walked away he told me that if he ever see's me eyeing his lady that he would score a touchdown on my nuts. Which I didn't get at all. Took my two young grandsons there to lunch today. Met by what is best described as a hostess determined to have her way. I asked for a booth only to be told that I can't have one because I need a highchair. I informed the hostess that was not necessary as my young grandson likes to sit on my lap. So where were we seated? A table in the bowels of the restaurant. No thanks. We left. I guess she was on a power trip, but I have the ultimate power: Where I spend my money. We went to PJ's Tavern before a concert a while back and I have to say I was very impressed. The atmosphere was dated but normal bar fare, hockey replays on TV, people refilling drinks, lots of sports paraphernalia, wood paneling, ect. I found the space to be quite small but you know what they say about finding a hole in the wall.... quite a hidden gem. We had a friendly server who refilled drinks and delivered our food timely. All the food that come out was timely and presented nicely. We started with the Hot Wings with buffalo sauce. The sauce tasted very original but I found some of the chicken meat a little fatty. For entrees we ordered the Pj Burger, the BLT and a Tuna Melt sandwich, with 2 sides of fries and 1 cup of mask-turtle soup. The Pj Burger was juicy but rather bland, but still a lot of meat for the price. The BLT was good but not great, very similar to the burger (bland but a large heaping of meat/veggies). The Tuna Melt was definitely the best entree, with crunchy Texas Toast and a heaping of cheesy, tender tuna. As far as sides, the fries were hot and crispy and the soup was flavorful and filled us all up. Overall, I have no complaints. I would definitely grab a bite to eat here if I'm in the area again. Ruined entire day. waited over an hour for food after it took our server over 30 minutes to take our order. Bad service and rude waitresses.

Stopped here for a late lunch after doing some Christmas shopping. There were plenty of tables available as most customers were sitting at the bar. We ordered a bacon cheeseburger and prime rib dip sandwich. The service was friendly and prompt. Our food arrived in short time and we were not disappointed. The burger was huge, and had a good grilled taste. The beef on the prime rib dip (like a French dip) was tender, flavorful and juicy. But the French fries were awesome. Each one was light and fluffy inside, but incredibly crispy on the outside. Overall, we had a good time and look forward to coming back. read more

I will be able to keep this very short and sweet: the food here is good, there's a nice variety of options, the waitstaff is extremely friendly and kind, and the place is clean. The atmosphere is pretty calm and I recommend their Reuben. I probably wouldn't drive from U City to Kirkwood just for PJ's but, if I'm in Kirkwood, I'm likely stopping in here for a sandwich and some good iced tea. read more

Enjoyed eating at lunch here and having a grilled chicken salad.....I had to take of the bacon as I forgot it was on the salad(I do love bacon...but too salty)....anyway...it was delicious and very cute place to come with friends for a drink or a meal...service was very good too. read more

They really need to add half-stars as an option. PJ's is better than 3 but not quite 4. The food is good. The atmosphere is what you would expect for a neighborhood tavern. It's a place that you go if you are going to be in the neighborhood. Like someone else mentioned, you don't drive 15-20 minutes just to go here. My experience from Friday night at 5:45pm: got a table right away. This could have something to do with lent going on right now, so I can't say this is typical. Waitstaff was attentive and timely which I very much appreciate. I was in a pretty bland mood, so I just got a cheeseburger but it was good. Its a bar. Its a pub. Its a......martini lounge? The weekend bartender on the bar side is a great man-- a real gentleman. The beer is cold and he seems to know how to make a variety of drinks. The weekend clientle seems to be mainly twenty somethings who work in kirkwood. read more

This is a favorite of the locals. Great food, great happy hour specials. I have never been there, and had a bad meal. TV's everywhere, and nice to sit outside when it is nice out. They have a room in back for the kids to play video games, and can be a little louder. read more

This is our go to bar! It's very near our house, we never have a problem getting a table, and the food is good. I usually get the tuna melt or the beef and brick and both are great. There's a patio out back with tv's which is perfect during the summer. It's just a nice, relaxed place to go eat and have a few beers - very casual and laid back. I know four stars seems like a lot for tavern food, but "for a tavern" it is deserved. Good Club sandwiches, burgers and very good fries, but.... the French Onion soup is the best! MMM... lots of melted cheese on top of toasted bread/crouton floating over a sea of tasty soup. M.... the answer to a cold winter day! I've enjoyed PJs for about ten years now ever since meeting a friend there for lunch. Now it is my Mother's Day Out destination. Delicious salads and soups. And I love the potato skins. I have often met friends here for lunch, a lovely destination before the shopping commences. read more

Our first time here. We ate outside. I really like outside dining. Our server was at the table immediately and took our drink order. We ended up ordering a burger and a Ruben. They both looked great. Large sandwiches with lots of fries. It took a little while for the food to be served but it was a busy time. It made for a nice experience. We will go back. read more

I've been coming here since I was a little kid and have always loved this Kirkwood neighborhood tavern. They have terrific food and a fun atmosphere that is welcoming to people of all ages (When I was a kid, we would have our hockey team parties here, and now as an adult I meet my friends here for happy hour). read more

Don't linger. It may be called a "tavern" but it's really a restaurant - 35 min. to eat, 15 min. to figure your bill, and then you better get ready to leave. Taverns are traditionally where one can buy drinks and visit. Not so here - The manager rudely grabbed items off of our table. This is one of my go-to places in Kirkwood. It has good food and a nice casual atmosphere. Its a good place to meet up with people and catch up. The food is your stereotypical American Pub food. Its nothing special, but its not bad. I really like the chicken caesar wrap and their pizzas are good too. The staff has always been friendly and usually gets food out within a timely manner. Its good and its cheap. Nothing that I get it over $10 other than a pizza. read more

PJ's is one of my families favorite restaurants. The atmosphere is casual. It's a great little hometown bar and grill. My favorite sandwiches are the prime rib dip and block and brick. For appetizers they have a very good nachos - I like the chicken, and their quesadilla is very good as well. One of my favorite restaraunts in Kirkwood. I go about 2 times a month. The best items on the menu, in my opinion, are the Beef and Brick (I go with provelone cheese instead of jack), the Cobb Salad, which is huge, and always good, and the mozzerla sticks which are pretty standard, but still good. read more

I eat at this place probably once a month, and almost always have a good experience. Service is invariably friendly, and usually very prompt. But the great thing about the place is the Tavern Classic Burger. It is the best burger in town at this price. It's consistently cooked perfectly, and the fries are just as good. read more

This was my second visit to PJ's. The first was very delicious. I had the Rib Eye steak cooked to perfection and I was able to order it unseasoned. I am on a low salt diet and watch my sodium intake carefully. My family opted for the burgers. Everyone really enjoyed the meal and said they would come back. Not impressed with our secon trip and I was disappointed. I wanted an unseasoned chicken breast and was informed that they are already marinated when they get them. Does this mean that you are getting a frozen piece of chicken? If so, shame on PJ's. Food should be fresh and you should be able to order your food unseasoned. Service was so so, the server forgot to order our appitizer and we made do with our meal. I wish I had ordered a salad because the amount of french fries were overwhelming and over half were not eaten. They were yout typical frozeen fries and should have been fried longer. Think I'll stick with restaurants that offer fresh food and offer unseasoned grilled chicken. read more

Very disappointed in my first visit to Pj's; will definitely not be returning. There are several other BETTER option in Kirkwood. Do not waste your time here. Waited 15 minutes to be greeted be a server, who was not personable at all. After the order of drinks (soda and a gin and tonic) she returned 10 minutes later asking what we ordered again. The food was all microwaved and frozen, and very bland. It came out way too fast to be even of decent quality. Then waited another ~10-15 minutes to get the check. I thought maybe for the inconvenience the server may have not charged us for the soda...Not the case. She then didn't return to pick up the payment. We had to flag down the OWNER who was there for dinner. It gets even better...The OWNER did not even offer to comp anything on the ticket and his excuse was the server just got sat a large table! Who the hell finds that an acceptable excuse in the food service industry these days, especially an owner. He could not even bring back our receipt to us. Everyone was very unprofessional here, no friendliness. I could only imagine the locals are the only thing keeping this business open. Do not come here if you are looking for even a decent burger, or fast/friendly service. Go across the street and pay minimal more for great food and servers that actually make you feel like you're appreciated...Or an owner for that matter. read more
