Awesome people ! Good food at reasonable prices, great quality and bang for the buck. Big hit with local AARP set, which makes for a homey Mel's Diner type vibe. Ordered the prime rib special 5:30 On a Friday night, came with scratch made garlic bread, a 10 oz center cut hunk of meat. Ordered it medium rare with a baked potato and an ice tea. Lived in Vancouver for over a year. Driven by this place over a dozen times. Finally went for our family dinner and we are trying to figure out why we waited so long to go to the place. Food was amazing!! Best clam chowder I ever had. When they fill up the bowl, THEY FILLED UP THE BOWL! Clam chowder was filled to the rim of the bowl!! Love that all the food was cooked from scratch. I love this place, yes, it is an older clientele and yes there are paintings all over depicting things such as wolves howling at the moon, but who cares-if you are 'too cool' because you are a Portland wannabe, then whatever, you should move over there and shut the hell up. If this place was in Portland, you'd give it five stars for the ambience.. The food is awesome and the service is awesome. I'm sure they really don't care what reviews they get because this place is packed ALWAYS...they have the best coffee in town and they aren't a nasty corporate chain like Elmers...which if you are truly a person who cares about what goes on in 'Portland' you'd care about the mom and pop places and ditch the attitude. I can't believe it's taken me this long to hit a Vancouver institution - The Plainsman. Probably the best greasy spoon/diner in Vancouver. I had a killer flat top burger recently with tasty fries and enjoyed the experience thoroughly. It's old school, but that's the way I like it. Blue collar digs and presentation, tasty diner food. Prompt, no-nonsense service too. Christine's (on Evergreen Blvd) has it's moments too (breakfast can be a letdown there though) so The Plainsman is THE choice for diners seeking great diner food in old school digs. read more

This place is a true gem in Vancouver. The vibe is very warm and inviting. Mostly locals and regulars whom the servers know and know what they want when they walk in. They bake there own bread for their toast and French toast (also gets served with many of their lunch and dinner items). Another Diner Gem in the Couve! Food is moderately priced, the Service Friendly, but the best part is they make their own bread! I wish they would make their own corned beef hash though. For dinner one evening, I had the Oyster Fry. Soup or Salad, Choice of Potato, Vegetable and house made bread all for $8.15. How can you go wrong? Decided to explore this little quirky place. It really makes you feel like it's a truck stop for cowboys and has a really nice vibe. Really big portions but yummy. Very friendly staff and always had hot coffee. This place would be a great place to go and meet up with a couple of friends, have a good time and just enjoy good food. Service here was good and on too of it..I always wonder why the coffee in these types of little joints always tastes the same? Bla bla bla..I tried the biscuits and gravy(biscuits are big and fluffy)gravy like in other reviews is bland. I also tried the mushroom and cheese omelette. It was good and good proportion. Friendly service but probably up there with some of the less awesome breakfasts I've had before. French toast was not flavorful, but the texture of it was fabulous. My husbands chicken fried steak tasted like wet dog - no joke. It wasn't good. The pancakes were rubbery and also not very tasty. Will we be back? No. But I'm guessing other people seem to have good experiences so I'm happy for them. read more

First time coming here, you seat yourself. The waiter brings me iced water with a menu right as i sit down i got breakfast, the 3 egg Denver omelette with pancakes. The food was alright i would like to come back and try their other choices. I heard the waiter talk about homemade sides when she was talking to the other tables. They are back open with limited seating, and shorter hours as posted but the same personable staff is serving the same great food. Not fancy, but generous filling servings, as a senior I usually take some home. Have been coming in for years. Have been coming after the recent loss of my wife. They have been wonderful in their support of me, I will continue to support Kari and her crew to keep a great home grown, local owned small business in operation. The food was mediocre, the service was outstanding. The people who frequent this place like to have loud racist discussions, stared me down when I came in, and made me incredibly uncomfortable. The only reason I stayed and finished my meal was the incredible server who was serving several people, prompt, polite, and repeatedly asked those making racist remarks to stop. She received a nice tip from me but I will never return. Definitely the kind of place someone's racist grandparents would enjoy, though. read more

So, this review is based on two separate visits. Had it been just the first visit, it would have received four stars, but the second visit soured me just a little bit on the experience. Firstly, the food is pretty standard for an American breakfast diner. You have your usual suspect choices, of pancakes, eggs, omelettes, etc. Their choices for lunch and dinner are also a pretty standard selection of burgers, chicken, and steak. The first visit, I had one of their bacon cheeseburgers, which was really good. The bacon was as crisp as I wanted it to be, a rarity when most restaurants tend to serve limp, soggy bacon that tastes like rubber. The service was super amazing too... I don't quite remember her name now, but we had a server who did an excellent job helping us out, being friendly. The second visit, however, came on Valentine's Day. My boyfriend and I did not own a car at the time, and so we dressed up and walked to the Plainsman to do something out for breakfast (since I work nights) wearing the outfits you see in my profile picture(Which was taken on the same day.) The diner was much busier, since it was around 10:30 AM on a Saturday morning, so a slight decline in the quality of service was to be expected. But I feel we were treated quite poorly. In particular we received numerous stares from the staff. While I expected stares from other customers, given how fancy we were dressed next to everyone else in the restaurant, the constant stares and murmuring from the staff left both my boyfriend and I a bit uncomfortable. I also feel the service delivered to us was poorer even given the circumstances, since I was not given the check when I asked for it initially, for instance(and instead the server gave me a refill on my coffee, which I did not want or need at that point.) While we might go again, we'll probably go at a time when it's not very busy at all, and I don't think we'll be dressing up like that again either. Not if we can't eat in peace because of it. read more

Atmosphere is cozy, maybe a bit noisy during busy times. But, still very nice place for a quick meal. Don't expect them to have special coffee. This is one of my favorite restaurants in Vancouver. It's been my favorite since I've moved here. I am a little hesitant to write this review since I feel that this restaurant is one of the city's best kept secrets and I would hate to get nudged out by new visitors. But it deserves the kudos; so here goes. I am from the Midwest and we prefer delicious, hearty meals that are made with craft and care. I love that it has the no-nonsense focus on deliciousness, but it still has that Northwest love of artistry and creativity. You see that spark in the daily specials. I love breakfast. It's my favorite meal and I feel this is where they excel. They bake their own bread, make their own jam, and the portions for the price are out of control. Whenever my family comes to visit me, I take them here and they love it as much as I do. It's not a pretentious place. It has comfy but worn booths, license plates as decorations, but the food is soooo good and the staff are so friendly and excellent at customer service. Fun little place to have lunch! I first ate here with a large group of co-workers; half complained it was too greasy for their liking, and the other half loved it! We were starving when we arrived and ravenously are our food, which was a mushroom omelette with all the fixings and corned beef hash browns. Both were delightful. The best food in Vancouver with the best staff. My boyfriend and I went here every Sunday for six months, sometimes Saturday's too until we moved to Portland and boy do we miss it. The food is good every single time. We've gotten just about everything on the menu and it's always delicious. The staff is always so sweet and welcoming. We loved our regular server and miss her whenever we have terrible breakfast service. You can easily miss this place for breakfast, but if you want to try something new..YOU SHOULD. First time here last weekend. Obviously, a lot of locals frequent this place, and we know why. Very nice friendly staff...varied menu, and everything we had was very good. Delicious biscuits and gravy...some of the best I have had. Huge biscuits and no skimping on the gravy. Crispy bacon...excellent REAL hash brown potatoes! Others in our party had other breakfast fare and all was delicious, including omelettes, French toast, and eggs. Third time stopping here for dinner. Old fashioned, diner atmosphere with home-made just about everything! For $8.95 I got the shrimp platter with the best Beef Barley soup ever, green beans with real butter and bacon, potatoes with white gravy, I think 8 fried shrimp (I brought some home) with cocktail sauce and a giant hunk of home-made bread and again real butter. I sat at the counter and the waitress and other patrons were chatty and friendly. It was a very pleasant dinner experience for myself and my son. BTW they also serve breakfast all day. My family has been here about a half dozen times in this last year (2015). This place is small but they manage to squeeze in quite a bit of seating. Let me tell you about the waitresses here. FAST! AMAZING! They are so friendly. Lots & lots of locals come here to eat. Some may call this a "greasy spoon" and even make fun of the interior. I find the folk art hanging on the walls is enduring. At a time when most people just go to iHop or Red Robin & have given up on small local owned places like this joint, I love it! The food is 100% American. The portions are a huge value. The food taste just like homemade - because it is!! We have tried almost every type of food on this menu & it's all been delicious. We always receive the best service & we always feel welcome here. Think of going to your grandma's house & getting breakfast. Totally worth your time to go here & give it a try. Nothing fancy at this down home diner. Just real good simple food.
