The service was fast and really friendly. The other customers where friendly too. The ice tea was prefect, real brewed tea with a lemon. I liked their blue cheese dressing that came on my side salad. I had deep fried scallops, because they were out of oysters. I think I would have liked the oysters better, but my baked potato was good, canned green beans and a nice piece of fresh made bread. Love walking into a diner full of old timers and a classic theme. We were able to sit at the breakfast bar, which was a delight. The service was fast and gracious. The food was the best greasy spoon breakfast I have had in the NW since I moved here nine years ago. The homemade jam was spot on. Plainsman is my neighborhood go to for breakfast. I have always had excellent, friendly, and fast service here. There homemade bread makes the best toast and I love the jam. Consistently a good and filling meal from french toast to omelets. Nothing fancy just some down home cooking. The price is reasonable and the serving size is just right. read more

This place is pretty great. It was everything I want for breakfast. Busy but not packed on a Saturday morning at 10am. The food was excellent. Sweetie and I had the veggie omelet and an order of B&G. Both were very good. The omelets are the fluffy, firm sort, folded over a lavish filling of green pepper, onion, sauteed mushroom - with lots of mild cheddar, mmm good. The hash browns are the homestyle grated potato sort, cooked brown and crispy on one side and flipped onto your plate. I love this kind of hashbrown potatoes, these did not come out of a Sysco package. The B&G were pretty good, gravy not the best I ever had more due to lack of sausage than flavor - the flavor & texture was excellent, full of drippins as it should be, just not much sausage itself. Tender nice biscuits, I might add a side of sausage to eat with it next time. Everything was well prepared and hit the table hot and timely. Tabasco was on the table, thank you! They bake their own bread for toast, I enjoyed the toast a lot. The coffee was just serviceable but I'll forgive a lot in the coffee arena for hashbrowns and toast this delicious. The restaurant is small, very clean. A little dated with local art on the walls (carefully painted scenes of farm junkyards full of 50's pickup trucks). License plates too, a theme apparently. Full of older folks than me, and some young families. The wait-folks were super nice. I think I may be a regular here - I hear tell they have prime rib on Friday night. read more

Asked the waitress what was good and her response was, "Everything". She was right, at least everyone at our table was happy with their meal. There are a few of these American restaurants around Vancouver that aren't chains and this is as good if not better than the others. For the price, the amount of food is ample. I got the hamburger sandwich which comes with hash browns and is covered in gravy. It was delicious. I also got a homemade cinnamon roll which amazingly had the perfect amount of filling and instead of frosting came with a big slab of butter which melted into a heavenly cinnamony sugar sauce. I've only had breakfast at The Plainsman, but it is always excellent. Great service and prices. That being said the gravy is mediocre, and I don't mean that as a slight on them it's a PNW thing. I'm a relocated southerner and I set the bar pretty high when it comes to biscuits and gravy, it's been my experience that mediocre is as good as it gets here in the PNW. read more

I can't say anything about the rest of their menu but their pancakes are the best. I am rather picky about pancakes and typically I do not order them at any restaurant. Thank goodness I tried them here. I would never have ate at this place had a friend not suggested it. I now head up to Vancouver about three times a year just for their pancakes. It felt like going home. Almost everything is homemade and yummy. Obviously they have a lot of regulars, the bantering was fun and seeing so many customers greeted by name was nice. Turkey dinner was so good! It was our second time in tonight, having discovered the place about a month ago. It's surprisingly bright and clean inside (unassuming exterior in a forgotten neighborhood). My husband and I went for breakfast on a Saturday, our first time here and it was delicious. It was a sit yourself place which we're not used to but we found a spot just fine and didn't mind at all. It did take a bit to be able to order and get our food but nothing obnoxiously long and they were busy so totally understandable. I got the chicken fried steak and he got corned beef hash, great prices and huge portions! Pretty typical diner breakfast food but that's my favorite so I loved it! This is my favorite place to eat. I love that it is a dinner. I have lived in Vancouver since 1974 and just starting going to eat here in 2009. Why did I wait 35 years? It has always been here and it is always packed. The waitress' are super friendly. You would think they are the owners. The homemade bread is so yummy. My favorite thing is the chicken fried steak for breakfast. They make the best BLT I have had anywhere and the fish & chips are very good. So disappointed last night... We have been here many times for breakfast and lunch but took our son in law and grandson for prime rib. Was highly recommended to him. Although the server was nice it took 45 mins to get our dinner ( grandson timed it) and even though they were ordered to be cooked differently all were extremely dry. Don't know what was going on in the kitchen but ......no more prime rib for us. read more

This is my idea of a restaurant. No music, standard "American" food, average prices. No weird themes or gimmicks, just straight forward food with the occasional returned fork due to insufficient dishwashing. My family thinks this is more three star than five star, but the waitresses are super nice and I like how it's the exact opposite of anything trendy or Portland snooty. read more

I went to the restaurant only once, but I think I might get hooked on it.... Everything was DELICIOUS... very good food and very nice service. We called ahead and asked if they can manage a bigger group since we were 8 and we were told they will de everything possible to accomodate us. When we arrived there, our table was already set and the waitress was right there to help us. While we were eating breakfast, she came several times asking if we need more help, or any refills and they were all very patient and respectful. The food was one of the best breakfast I ever had. I love eating here. It is the only breakfast place that consistently cooks eggs over medium properly. The bacon is cooked perfectly, so I can eat the whole slice without being grossed out by the fatty portions. Request their home made bread for your toast and you will not be disappointed. The atmosphere is what you would imagine a small town diner would be. I always get the bacon and eggs, so I can't comment on any other meals, but I can definitely vouch for those. read more
