Wonderful place to go. Right on the wharf and on the second floor offers a great view of the river. The drinks and food were excellent. We got a fig and bacon with arugula pizza. This place is in a really unassuming building - it looks like it used to be a store that had an apartment upstairs. It now has some really comfortable couches upstairs and plenty of seating. A fantastic tap list and bottle room, and their kitchen serves up some fantastic dishes. Strong recommend their reuben sandwich, and their tacos are great for a quick bite. Their meat and cheese platter is fantastic if you've got a group that needs some nibbles. The food (for two sandwiches) took over an hour. There were people checking on their food, and asking for their food to be put in to-go boxes instead. The bartender couldn't have cared less. I asked about our food and I got "oh yeah foods taking a while today" for a response. So would we go back, yes, but just expect poor service. The employee behind the counter was very friendly. The outside deck was clean and bright! We shared an Italian grinder (based on several reviews). It was awesome! Came here as part of a short pub crawl with my wife and a friend, knowing nothing about it, including even its existence. However, upon walk-in, I was immediately impressed with the sheer number of beers, ciders and wines available, in bottle or can form, as well as from the tap. I abstained from drinking at this particular location, having already had a cider at the last place, and I just can't stomach that much liquid back to back: give me an Old Fashioned or similar cocktail, and I can keep up with the best of them; anything else is too heavy. I'm not much of a beer, wine or cider guy, anyway. My wife and our friend had no such compunctions. They ordered at the bar; unfortunately, the one wine my wife wanted was not available in a glass, for some reason, so she ordered another instead. We sat out on the patio, which had firepits that remained unlit, despite it being pretty dark out, but the streetlights were enough to keep things reasonably lit. Would have been a nice touch though, considering how quickly the temperature plummeted. With places like this, carrying such a vast variety of beverages, its irrelevant to judge the establishment based on any particular one. You don't like it? Pick another one...there's literally dozens of alternatives. Where places like Tap Union stand out are the three S's: service, selection, seating. On all three, they shine; the upstairs common area is reminiscent of a smoking room in a murder mystery mansion; the patio (when lit) is spacious and ventilated, if a bit spartan; and the aforementioned selection is robust and varied. This is the kind of place I would show off to own-of-town beer and cider aficionados. As for myself, the next time through, I'll make Tap Union a first stop, running on empty and ready to fuel up without topping off the tank. read more

The root beer has a lot spicy undertones. The Rueben was fantastic one of the best I've had. Was subtle pleaser to the taste buds and kept you coming back for more bites. There was healthy portion of meat and tasted perfectly. The roast beast was a roast bust. No flavor in the beef at all and very dry, over cooked; a light grey verse a nice pink. I love this sandwich so much, I've never tried anything else on their menu. I may very well be missing out on other specialties, so I encourage you to explore their menu for yourself. As if their food isn't enough, the atmosphere is perfect for long discussions over a couple pints of local brew. The Tap Union Freehouse is a nice tap room that is a little quirky. You walk in and go up to the bar. They have descriptions of the beers on tap on the right hand side--or you can ask the server to have a taste. The tap system is efficient and I like that they have that they run the glasses through the speed washer before serving. They did not have a ton of beers on tap, but the couple I had were really good (one was an ale, the other an IPA--which seemed to have the widest selection at the time. Our server was nice and very attentive--plus she really knew the beers. They also sell really great sandwiches--although there are no signs and you have to find a menu at the bar. I had a philly cheesesteak--it was really good. I thought the meat was perfect and I really liked the way the cheese was melted in so thoroughly. I also liked the peppers.
